I enjoy everyone's discussions; however, living in the US and having been L42 deprived, I don't know much about the band personally. Would it be best to search the archives? I would like to know basic things, like who the musicians were, and things about them. Didn't one of them die young? Exactly when is ILF Day? I want to wear my T Shirt officially. I have a very small minute musical backjground. OK, I can play chopsticks on the piano!! and I enjoy the technical discussions although often over my head. Have fun at ILF and be prepared to tell us all about it!!! LA Levelhead ------------------------------ Subject: Youth Market/Radio/wind!! Untill the last few albums, then the musicians began to support them again.....Maybe muso's like to listen to and buy cult/underground/unsuccessful music? Here in the UK we are quite lucky with our radio stations. The national ones play most styles of music.(radio 1 has gone downhill V. fast - IMHO) But locall radio has got a lot better and regional superstations are popping up all over the place. Here in the East Midlands we have a new one called Century FM. which is similar to West Midlands Heart FM (same as London) They play lots of classic and new songs. Century FM seems to play L42 everyday! If the radio's crap I bung in a CD or tape (DJ Adz) Adam P.S. Ade - It could of been a bit of both...who knows! I know it's been quite awhile since I have written in the digest however I am anxiously awaiting Level42's greatest hits release. You know what the terrible thing is I work in a small music store called Tape World and we don't carry Level42. There isn't one thing to be found of my favorite group. I've listened to the L42 midi files and they are brillant. One question does anyone know where I can get posters of Level42? One more thing Paul I am interested in True Colours. Chambers, Stern, Japan Video From: Winman42 Date: Wed, 6 May 1998 09:34:34 EDT Hey Will, you are correct about Dennis Chambers being one heck of a drummer. I've seen Dennis quite a few times with Mike Stern and John Scofield. A most explosive drummer, but i feel his style is more similar to Gary's, rather than Phil Gould. I have a solo album of his and all of Mike Stern's albums. Mike Stern is by far my favorite guitar player. If anyone has not heard of him, or heard his music, pick up an album, any album! His first, 'Upside Downside' features on of the last studio performances of Jaco Pastorius. Speaking of Dennis, check out his band GRAFITTI from 1993. Very cool fusion funk. The band is Dennis on drums, Gary Grainger on BASS, Haakon Graf on Keyboards, and Ulf Wakenus on Guitar. It's a smokin CD. (Gary played bass with Dennis in John Scofield's band, and like Dennis is from Baltimore, Maryland) Whew, sorry for the long rant, but i think some of you may enjoy this music. Regarding Richard Page, don't forget his recent solo CD, which is quite good. The name of the CD escapes me at the moment, but I'm sure others on the digest have it. Terek, I think the reason that no one replied to your query regarding the Guaranteed Live video from Japan is because as far as I know, it does not exist. There IS a concert video titled 'Guaranteed Live', but was filmed in the UK. I have this as a Laser Disc Import from Japan, which may be where the confusion comes in. To see a picture of the laser disc, check this link: http://members.aol.com/winman42/video2.htm Also, lots of us wonder what parts on all the albums are Mike, and which are Wally. I think one of the few times that the keyboards were directly credited to someone is the case of Pete Wingfield playing clavinet on the pursuit of accident. (of course I may be wrong, as i'm writing from memory) Neverthekess, Mike can handle any of the parts live in concert, when he has to. If you are going, even if you are thinking of going but not quite sure, I need you to do the following: 1) You MUST subscribe to the special list (ilf @ worldmachine.com). We can't continue to clog the digest with all this stuff (what time is the bus leaving? why can't I find a hotel?). People who can't go don't need it rubbed in their faces that they can't go. 2) Post a message to the list once you are subscribed stating the following: Where you are coming from (Eurostar or airport and city you are coming from) When you are arriving (day and time) If you are meeting us in London, Portsmouth or on the Isle of Wight Where you are staying, both in London and on Saturday (Isle or Portsmouth) If you are coming from England, whether you are driving or not Many of those subscribed haven't posted anything, so I don't know you are there. This info is important for a number of reasons, but the main one is that we may leave earlier for the Isle of Wight if everyone is already there Saturday morning. That will leave time for sightseeing, and we can leave Jo DaFlo's earlier to converge upon someone's house. Also, I need to know where everyone is staying in order to figure out where we should meet Friday night to go to dinner. I have had an insane week both at work and with my extracurriculars, but after Sunday I will be free and clear. All the questions everyone has been asking will be answered early next week (Bath daytrip arrangements, pubs for Sunday night, etc.). The important stuff to settle is the arrangements for Saturday, and that will be settled no later than Tuesday. Eric, please send me the exact names of everyone that you have on the special list on Friday afternoon. Finally, I have some sad news: I know I told people to e-mail me by the 16th if they wanted a shirt, but I have to move that up to this Saturday morning. Believe it or not almost all of them are spoken for already, so most of them will be shipped out by Winston and I Saturday morning. If you ordered two and send me a check for two, chances are pretty high I can only give you one, so you will receive a refund. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Richard Page..recent solo careers... and US Radio From: "Kara" Date: Wed, 6 May 1998 16:59:55 -0700 Hello All! Just a few quick thoughts on some recent threads I have been reading here.. It was good to read about Mr. Mister.. I have loved their music since I first heard "Kyrie" so long ago..But, as I was searching through a recent music store.. I found a copy of Richard Page's solo cd, "Shelter Me". It is quite mellow..quite nice for a quiet evening. Anywho.. thinking of all these 80's bands got me to thinking about some of the newer music. And I noticed a recurring theme. There are quite a few male artist popping up these days that were part of a band in the 80's. I can think of a few.. Peter Cox.. formerly of Go West (his solo album is amazing.. I HIGHLY reccomend it!), Richard Page of Mr. Mister, and even Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears (although he kept the same name). (And on an obscure note.. Rob Halford of Judas Priest venturing out with the help of Trent Reznor!). I would be interested on others opinions on this.. If there are any! Secondly, I think that the state of the radio biz here in the U.S. is quite sad. The only play of Level 42 here is "Something About You" and that is on the soft hits station! But, I am grateful for the smooth jazz station here in San Francisco. It is because of them that I have "Forever Now". I happened to be listening and then this song came on (which I would later find out to be "LIAPW").. and the annoucer mentioned Level 42. I happened to email the station (this was before I came enlightened to the digest) and got a response back regarding the album. They pointed me in the direction of an import cd store.. and VOILA! I got my RCA copy of "Forever Now". I continue to hear Level 42 on the station (Good Man in a Storm..It's Over..Children Say).. I think someone there must like the boys!! But basically.. I agree.. there are many wondeful bands who aren't given much of a chance because they do not belong to any 'format' that is played on the radio out here. I was really shocked to hear Jamiroquai on the 'alternative' station here.. there music surely does not fit it with the likes of Pearl Jam or Thrid Eye Blind. But it was only to be a short lived trend. If I would have heard "Too Young To Die".. I might have gone into coronary arrest. Perhaps if Level 42 had ben given a chance as, they might have received more airplay. Who is to say? So much for this being quick....well... all this reading of the ILF makes me sad that I won't be attending.. some of us are taking finals that week!! Have a blast!! And bring back lots of pics and stories... I know I will want to hear every detail!! TCOY! Kara P.S. For the stick players on the digest.. has anyone heard the new Tony Levin cd.. I have been reading lots of good things.. but have been unable to find it yet. I love Chris Botti who plays trumpet on the album.. and would love to hear if it is worth the search! ------------------------------ Subject: New Drummers Part Two From: Brad Dietz Date: Wed, 06 May 1998 21:20:10 -0400 Hey all, I can't take the credit for first (or ever) mentioning Pat Mastoletto as a "new drummer". Someone else did, and I can't remeber who. Nevertheless, I thought seriously about adding him to my list- under my first "New Drummer" post. As I think about it, I think Pat would be more suitable for the gig than David Garibaldi- who got on my list- not the best choice... Whoever called my hand on that one, I now agree with you... Another vote for Pat... After listening to Peter Gabriel's music tonight, I feel that Manu Katche would definately be excellent. On many occasions, he played electric drums and did programming- right in line with Level 42. I still think John Molo would be best, though. Another person who would be great would be Carter Beauford from the Dave Matthews Band. Ok- groan if you want to, but he has a lot in common with Phil. For one thing, Carter plays with an "open/uncrossed" style much like Phil does, playing somewhat like a left-handed player on a right handed kit. Another thing is the virtuosity of the hit-hat and cymbal work that both Carter and Phil play. If I there's one thing that I take from their playing is the cymbals... Other than that, I think they are different. Phil runs like a freight train through a chicken shack, and is quite unflappable while Carter is Mr. Beat displacement and will try to do everything to make you forget about "one". Just my opinions. Enough of that disertation... Someone mentioned the question about who was the most recognizable guitar player. I'm thinking that question means: who's the most distinctive in terms of sound, and consistency to that sound-not popularity. Most "recognizable"- and I'm thinking of someone who's had the most exposure, like Hendrix, Clapton, Page, etc... As I understand the question, I think The Edge or Andy Summers would be one of the most recognizable. They both sound like nobody else in terms of sound and/or playing style. Another vote would go to Danny Gatton- if any of you have heard of him, Michael Hedges, Jerry Garcia. Again, just my thoughts... On the Mtv thing: I think that by and large, Mtv has gone down the tube with all the non-musical stuff it does. Those other programs are fine, except for a station who's slogan was, and still might be (?) "Music Television". Am I missing something? Although they did Level 42 wrong and others who, in my opinion deserved more critical and commercial success- I still hold out for them to wake up to the wonderful music. Mtv recently aired an in depth special about the Dave Matthews Band and the new album- going through the album track through track with behing the scenes shots, and thoughts much like the "Classic Albums" thing Vh-1 did with such albums as Paul Simon's Graceland, and others. Very informative, indeed! No, I'm not trying to be the resident DMB expert- only that my topics had unintentionally related examples... Back to Level 42. Who would Phil fit in with besides Level 42? Turning this drummer thing around... I'd like to see Phil play with The Wallflowers. I can just see him playing "One headlight". I think Phil would be interesting in The Police or U2. Anyone? Take Care Brad "Music is Love"- David Crosby ------------------------------ Subject: Let's Get Physical From: Dave Mock Date: Wed, 6 May 1998 18:55:30 -0700 (PDT) Hey, Micro-Kids: No, the title of this dispatch doesn't mean I'm going to chat up Olivia Newton-John (though I fondly remember when "Let's Get Physical" duked it out with "I Can't Go For That" for US No. 1 at Christmastime/New Year's '81-'82. I'm actually responding to Tony Sharpe's comments in the Tuesday Digest (thanks Tony). On my US copy of "World Machine" the order of the first four tracks (also the full Side 1 on the vinyl version) is "Something About You,?" "World Machine," "Physical Presence" and "Leaving Me Now." At the end of "Physical Presence" it fizzes into an echo and fades out, with one final second of someone (dunno whether Mark or Mike) singing "Silence..." and then the echo. Then you hear the opening downbeat snare of "Leaving Me Know," followed by the opening bass, drums and keys. BTW: The 45 version of "Leaving Me Now" whooshes in. I like the original way better, though. TCOY, The Duke PS: Anyone on the Digest like Philippe Saisse? I just bought a CD copy of his '88 Windham Hill set "Valerian," which is only one of the greatest New Age albums I have ever heard. I played it on my old radio station (WRHU-FM on Long Island) after it came out, but after I left the staff I kept forgetting to buy it. Philippe fans who know him only for his contempo jazz stuff -- also enjoyable -- should see if they can find "Valerian." _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
