Andrew, Michael or some studio musician? It was Deon Estus, who plays with George Michael. The bass playing on all of Wham!'s stuff is excellent--check out the fingerstyle groove on Wham! Rap. He was featured in the UK magazine 'Guitarist' about 10 years ago, and has done some solo stuff. I have one of his singles somewhere, and it was pretty cool--quite soulful singing from the man. Now, Jerome Preston--there's a cool bass player! Frightening slapping technique, but he still keeps it all musical, and is not just 'showing off.' Ta ta for now! My new job at the Columbia Broadcasting System (I'm a radio newswriter at New York HQ) is going extremely well. The news department is going through changes on both TV and radio, but the radio side is still the best news outfit in commercial radio, and the people like my work. I hope to get an apartment soon near the newsroom on West 57th. After I'm settled, I think it will be a good time for another Metro Levelfest (hint hint). Speaking of Level stuff: I'm intrigued by the chat about the album vs. single versions of "Tracie." I prefer the album version because it's stretched out a bit more. I wasn't that impressed with the song when I heard it on the "Level Best" compilation -- this was in 1990, before I heard the "Staring At the Sun" album -- it seemed a bit too poppy. However, I've grown to like it. I also think the video is one of the brighter clips L42 has put out. (Get a look at that vest Mark's wearing.) It's interesting without the sensory overload of "Heaven In My Hands." BTW: What about that "Take Care Of Yourself" spot? Gary as Big Ben? Mark as a punker? And the whole band as the Four Tops? Yowza, yowza, yowza. TCOY, Dave Mock ------------------------------ Subject: Titanic vs Wally B. From: Gomikego Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Date: Mon, 19 Jan 1998 00:40:31 EST I just bought the Titanic soundtrack. Great soundtrack. Has anyone noticed the eerie resemblance between the Titanic soundtrack and Wally Badarou's "Words of a Mountain" Similar instruments and chord structures. Similar dream like effect. For those who don't have the Wally album, please get it if you are into dream-like new age-ish music. It's a great album with a wonderful variety. Any news on Wally making another album? Mike ------------------------------ Subject: Tracie From: Dan Merz Date: Mon, 19 Jan 1998 02:14:21 -0500 Well, I guess that's why there are opinions! I like the slower tempo on Tracie.......the up tempo one sounds like a Chipmunk Christmas album! Just throwing my two cents in (before taxes) Dan Merz ------------------------------ Subject: Rockpalast incl. interview From: Henri.Blakenburg @ DUT.RWS.minvenw.nl Date: Mon, 19 Jan 98 8:11:44 +0200 Hi Starchilds, HERE IT IS: I've got a mail from Peter Ruchel WDR redaktion about the starting time of the RERUN L42 CONCERT FROM 1984. I have never heard of this L42 song. On which album is it located?? > Also, I find the shortened versions of the songs are unnatural > sounding (and annoying), whereas I didn't feel that way when I > played Level Best 24-7. Maybe all this is obvious, but I just > thought I'd state my thoughts... Right on. Of all the L42 compilation albums, I like Level Best least for solely this reason. To cut songs shorter like "SAY", "It's Over", "HIMH", "Children Say", "LMN", etc. is sacrilege. But I suppose it has its merits considering they wanted to put at much as possible hits on one CD. (18 tracks is a lot.) > Hallo Level Fans!!! > I`am from Poland and i`m 38 > I love Level 42 music , it is my favourite band > Who know what about Mark King , where he play now ? > I wish You all the best ! > Thanks for the answer ! > Edward > edwardno @ polbox.com Welcome to the digest, Edward! Glad to hear we got online fans over there as well. Talking of least favourite songs, I'd like to start a thread (it was probably here before)... which is your least favourite track on every album? From: Tom Brown Date: Mon, 19 Jan 1998 10:38:51 +0000 Hi all ! Not to be out done at all, I thought I'd share a little something with you. I too am to be married this year and all the proposing and stuff went off over the New Year !!! The wonderful lady is called Hazel and she's only twenty two and so missed out on the L42 era a little bit. However, since we met, last November, I've been bringing her up to speed and she just can't stop playing "Leaving Me Now". I just hope she's not trying to tell me something !!! Anyway, here's hoping everybody has a wonderful 1998 and I hope to maybe see some of you sometime this year. TTFN -Tom
