Well one guy was Mark King!!!!! He sang Leaving Me Now and I guess he wasn't bad. When you listened to the real thing so much its easy to critisize but this guy was quite good. I think he did Leaving Me Now because its one of the few singles where Mike doesnt have a big vocal part and the show doesnt allow groups. He said Level 42 had over 20 hit singles and split up in 1994. His bassplaying left a lot to be desired, as did the piano playing. He should have come out without the bass, like Mark does in the video, he looks really cool. Unfortunatley, he didn't win, Belinda Carslise did, and she wasnt up to that much really. Believe it or not, having completed my dissertation last monday, I cannot type with any of the first two digits on either hand because they are too sore. I am typing with my little fingers now and it takes ages. Yours................LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: Duran Duran... From: "Arjan Meijer" Organization: Iquip B.V. Date: Sun, 03 May 1998 14:25:31 +0200 Just a short one, cause this thread is a bit old, I'm late to jump on this bandwagon... :-) I have always thought that "Ordinary Day" from Duran Duran was a very Level 42-like song. It could have been one of the Guaranteed tracks, with Alan Holdsworth on guitar. Another track that has some Level 42-ring to it is "I Will Remeber" by Toto (from the Tambu album 1995). I don't know why, but I think it has to do with the harmonies or something, it has always reminded me of L42. Well I promised a short one, so I'll keep my promise! Bye bye, Arjan ------------------------------ Subject: From: "leon ramos" Date: Sun, 03 May 1998 06:31:08 PDT Hi.... About Forever Now.... Here in Mexico we had a local version of this album, It has a booklet, the CD had a printed label in green, which teared off easily. I've been making reserach about releases and I just find this... The L42 Albums published in Latin America are: World Machine Running in the family Staring at the sun Guaranteed Forenever now... The only single that I found printes in mexico was Something about you, SISA Remix. It was very popular, but know is totally unknow. About the North America's turn away from l42... when Forever now came out I promptly buy it and said... (I can't write it, I am not thinking well, last night I went out with my girlfriend, and reached my house by 2:00 or maybe 3:00 by the morning, I have been in my job since 7:00 by the morning, and it's sunday, and i have 6.5 hours to go), Andrew G., will you be so gentle to translate it, I think that is important...? "Si estos tipos hubieran lanzado estes disco entre 1990 y 1992, ahora estarian sonando bastante fuerte" Well about the favorite tracks... It's a copy of a friend's video which has L42 live in Birmingham from an BBC2 "Old Grey Whistle Test" show from 1983, together with lots of other bits and pieces, plus the "Pier Special" on MK. Its great viewing, although the picture quality is rather bad to say the least. As I will have my car I can also take some people back to the hotel/Tony's. I guess the best thing to do is sort it out those arrangements when we all meet up. Looking forward to putting names to faces at the ILF. From: "Adrian Bond" Date: Sun, 3 May 1998 21:15:42 +0100 Brian Runkle asked > New question. Why did Level 42 break up? That's a question I've sobbed into my pillow on many a night : - ( In the interview for "The Pier" (an arts program in the Sussex Area) MK said that with hindsight it might have been better to have split the band when the Gould brothers left, but he and Mike wanted to carry on with "the Level 42 thing". He goes on to say that when Alan Murphy and Gary Husband joined the band the music went off in a new direction (very true!). He then says that when Alan died nothing had ever been so final, and losing a close friend really affected them all and they kind of went on to auto-pilot (make an album, do a tour, make an album, do a tour) when again they probably should have finished it. Sadly, it seems it was just a matter of time. Why did Level 42 become > less popular in the U.S after "Running in the Family". I believe the bands US success with "Something About You" caused a change of direction from Jazz-Funk to all POP. At that time Grunge and Hard Core Rap were coming into vogue. Bands that had a Happy Upbeat sound "sucked" according to Beavis and Butthead, the two most important music critics of our time. (that is a joke) The band no longer had the Jazz-Funk edge for the adult radio stations and POP wasn't popular. I think they were victims of a musical Identity crisis. leaving you now Cedric_Freeman @ yahoo.com ------------------------------ Subject: Fwd: Level42 Digest V98 #116 From: Bilal42 Date: Sun, 3 May 1998 18:52:52 EDT brunkle @ bigreddog.com (Brian Runkle) writes: > Like a baby, (sorry Gary fans) Gary doesn't like playing to click > tracks so he bailed.(musical differences) Guitar players have come and > gone. Let me comment: Gary was always very keen on the band, he was keen to join even before Boon had properly left. But he always had other musical interests (most notably the Alan Holdsworth and solo work). I thought it a little unfair to call him a baby! Secondly, from what I could tell, Jakko was VERY 'committed' to the band. He seemed to absolutely love it and to me seemed great with them on stage. I'm sure he would have stayed on. Remember, in the end Level42 were actually a two member band, Mark and Mike. also, maybe they enjoyed playing with different artists. After all, Level 42 were always known as "musicians' musicians". See you Bilal ------------------------------ Subject: World Machinery From: Dave Mock Date: Sun, 3 May 1998 18:33:50 -0700 (PDT) Hey Micro-Kids: Cheers to our correspondent in Sydney, Jeff, for his comments about "World Machine", especially "Physical Presence." It's one of those songs that to me starts out like a run-of-the-mill cut, but sneaks up on you, especially the midsection ("How, how, how!"). And the way the echo at the end leaves you waiting into the opening downbeat of "Leaving Me Now" is great. Even though Rolling Stone preferred "Running In the Family" to "World Machine," I think the songcraft and production are tops. TCOY, The Duke ------------------------------ Subject: The MAGIC CHANGES From: jcvaeth @ juno.com (john c vaeth) Date: Mon, 04 May 1998 00:36:45 EDT Regarding Brian's comments on whether L42 lost their magic after the departure of the Gould's, I must say that Level 42 MAGIC has never left. It has only changed (and, I think, in some beautiful ways). First listen to A. Murphy on Heaven in My Hands, or better yet, listen to his SOUL in Gresham Blues. Now, this is not Boon, but something else altogether and I don't know how to describe it other than to say it is so REAL and works so well. Then listen to A Kinder Eye. Holdsworth haunts this tune! No one can deny the strong character and comradeship of the band before the splits, but change can be good. Now listen to If You Were Mine and air drum all the cool Husband parts at the end! John P.S. L42 just fell victim to the ........U.S. way, who knows what they know, the U.S. business blows.........music 'biz that is. Hopefully, if I'm ever fortunate enough to enter the music 'biz, I can wallow through that kind of bull. So many "suites" and so called "fans" can't adapt to an artist's growth/evolution. Thanks to these folks for keeping mainstream music so full of brain-dead, talentless, clones. Maurice, to have L42 on DVD would be beyond PHAT!!! Please keep us posted. I think i have been on this before. i remember talking to the owner of Red Eye Records in Sydney on the release of Forever Now and in his words he said it was a return to form. It was the return of Phil. I could'nt agree more. There is no knocking of Staring At The Sun or Guaranteed here as they are great albums but Phils drumming was just right for Level 42. I have been collecting music for many years but have never really taken a great notice of drummers.........but when i here a Level 42 song with Phil i go ......WOW. There is of coarse other drummers i do like ....John Bonham and while we are talking of drummers that may have fitted in to Level 42 how about ...........Drummie Zeb from Aswad. an impeccable groove cheers from sydney jeff
