Howard Jones / Human League / Culture Club WILL tour this summer and it has been confirmed by my radio station and ticketmaster... For those of you in NJ, they will be at the PNC Atrs Center on August 4th. Also, The B-52's will be touring with The Pretenders........ So, it feels like the summer 0f 1988, not 1998....... Ryde is a great place because of Joe Daflos. You will love this place. There is also a skating rink where the lads once played a mean concert. Cowes is worth a visit, especially the school where Mark went. Shanklin and Sandown are very quaint little towns if you want a nice day out. Grab a bus rover ticket and you go anywhere you like in that day. Not sure on price. I'd love to be joining all you lucky people but its one hell of a journey from me. Have a great time and take care of yourselves. Well done Rob! For the record, I'm also a victim of having my gear stolen from my home in Miami. My JayDee MK Series 1 #95608 and MusicMan 4-str fretless were never recovered but I know the feeling. Now I'm looking for sheet music(not tabs) on early L42 such as: You can't blame Luis, The Persuit of Accidents True Believers, etc, if anyone can suggest anything... Also I'm in the market for a JayDee MK series III (smaller than series 1) or JayDee GA-24, or early Status basses, please let me know if they are available or where to look. Last but not least Angie, welcome to the Digest, I'm also a new subscriber and I hope you get as much thrill out of it as I do! I need an accurate headcount to make sure everyone gets a shirt. Also, we can make sure no one is missed when we discuss where we are meeting and such. Bill Wilson (Seattle), Byrdman (Denver), Laurel Anderson (LA) and Matthew Blackmon (Texas), please gather accurate headcounts for your Levelfests and I will send you the shirts as soon as I get them. Its looking like it makes the most sense to stay in the Portsmouth Marriott. 88 pounds isn't cheap, but remember there will be at least 3 to a room if not 4. For 4 people, it is only 22 pounds, which is around $40. That isn't too bad. Also, that way we can ensure we are all in the same hotel. I say we take the 11:20 ferry to Portsmouth and stay there so that we can get going early the next day. Marcus Miller is coming back to NY??!! I am there! When he was here in October '95, I was front and center, and it was one of the best shows I've seen. I'm psyched. We haven't had a NYC Levelfest in a while, but the Isle of Wight trip is taking up all my time and energy right now. I think we will probably have one in late June/early July. Winston and I will set something up after we get back from England. I must've missed this question when it was originally asked. I believe it was Frank Tontoh. Neil Conti, by the way, was (is?) the drummer for Prefab Sprout, and he sat in with L42 on the live gigs immediately following Phil's departure. Great drummer, though most of Prefab Sprout's music is definitely an acquired taste. > I think it was a guy called Frank Tontoh Uh, ok, so Lisa beat me to it! Wish I could make ANY of the Levelfests, but, sadly, work & family keeps me here. From: Paul Hammond Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 16:57:34 -0000 Hi y'all, Bill Miller just forwarded me the note he has sent to the digest .. just wanted to add a little to it. Don't panic!!! The reason he is paying 74 pounds for his car is because it is bank holiday weekend. Getting to the island is always nasty around these times (xmas, bank hols etc.) and the ferry companies really go to town!! The rest of the year, it would have probably been about 30 pounds. The foot passenger price for Portsmouth to Ryde is 9.80 pounds for an overnight return. This doesn't change... The hovercraft from Southsea to Ryde is about the same price. Much more manageable. :-) Sorry if this re-iterates anything, PH. Actually, my research indicates that Red Funnel doesn't go to Portsmouth. It's Wightlink Ferries we need, and their number is 1705 812011. Their website is at http://www.wightlink.co.uk/home.htm, but it doesn't include scedules. Saw a compilation movie called "Best of Prince's Trust" (or something like that ) on Much Music a couple of weeks back. Second or third cut was our lads playing HIMH. Mark was visible in the "backup band" for many other songs, but rarely would I think to myself "ooh, listen to that MK lick". When you think about it, this is actually a testament to his overall musicality (not that that should be a surprise to you). ...Alex... (ha,ha) Firstly as a new-ish member too I'd like to say a welcome to Angie and hope that she enjoyes the daily digests as much as I do. Secondly, I love the Chinese Way ! It's taken several years of therapy for me to able to say that in public, but finally I can : ) My fave version is the one on the end of the Guaranteed Live video where MK does a scat improvisation at the end. F. A. B. ! (What did that stand for in Thunderbirds!?) On the SATS tour, I'm sure that instead of singing "My eyes wide open, I feel a breeze, words softly spoken, in Cantonese", MK sang "My flies wide open, I feel a breeze, cos' my old boy, reaches to my knees". From: brunkle @ bigreddog.com (Brian Runkle) Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 18:49:06 -0400 Question for all... I'm hoping to start alittle discusion with this. Why did Level 42 become less popular in the U.S after "Running in the Family". To be honest, the became pretty much forgotten.(except by true fans!) I do not know if anyone will remember this but in the late 80's on MTV they had a show call "Smash or Trash". Viewers would call in and vote on a video whether it would be a "smash" or a piece of "trash". Well, our favorite band was on the show. MTV played "Heaven in my Hands" when it was first released. To my dispair, it was voted "trash" (or course by thousands of idiots who do not appreciate great freakin' music!) After that, MTV never played the video again. And that was the last I ever heard of Level 42 on MTV. I had tickets to go see them in Cleveland, Ohio (still have the ticket) but Level 42 cancelled their U.S tour because the album did pourly in the states. DAMN THE LUCK! Which brings me to the question...Does anyone remember this? Or does anyone have any opinions on why Level 42 ran out of steam in the U.S? Keep in mind, I am in NO WAY trying to put the band down. (My disclaimer, haha) Let's hear your stories people! Brian brunkle @ bigreddog.com Also, still have lots of Level 42 items for trade. ------------------------------ Subject: ILF Spotting From: Daniel James Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 16:38:38 -0700 (PDT) > I will now be attending the Isle Of Wight Levelfest... and as I hardly > know anybody by sight... look out for my Blue Jeep Wrangler reg plate > L94 VLF... Adam said:- >Was the Channel 4 programe you mentioned "Play at home"? >I have a very poor copy of this and would love to get a better one. Yeah, that was it! Can't quite remember that Adz (sorry, no pun intended), I only ever saw "Countdown". But I do remember one of the the adverts in "Play at Home" for the beer that had Ivan Stavinsky Stavar in it. Catchy little brute! Can you remember the beer in question? Something tells my noddle it was Worthington. Also regarding your private mail reference Princes Trust vid. That would be a great idea. I can dub a few copies of your better quality version and courier it back to you if you don't mind. Please bring it along. Adrian (Bond) I have earmarked you for a copy. Bilal said:- >The marriot is 88 pounds per night per room, do you >know anywhere cheaper? I cant get to the Tourist office until Saturday, >I'd appreciate it if you have any advice. As Lolita said it is a holiday weekend in the UK and any hotels, bed and breakfasts etc are snapped up by the sea lovin' folk that appear from below decks. It is a fact that the Marriott is the most expensive place in the area, but it depends what you want. If its just to crash for the night and grab some breakfast (which I suspect it is) then there are cheaper places about, probably down to about 35-40 pounds. If you want jacuzzis (I just blow off in the bath), saunas, pools, four poster beds and stuff then the rate increases. I will get some info to you by Monday on what is available. >Here is the part I dont understand: First N/express told me the all >in return cost was 15 pounds, (now they say it is 21 pounds inclusive >of hovercraft) which is much less than what you state. Can you confirm >this? I think I need to clarify prices here. My posting yesterday converted my pound symbol into "=A3" so I will reiterate. The high speed catamaran ferry costs about 7 pounds return, as long as the return is by 00:40 hours (the last ferry). Crossing time across The Solent is about 15 mins. This terminates at Ryde Pierhead and (for the lazy types) you need to take a train the length of the pier (1/4 mile-ish) to Ryde Esplanade which I think is included in the cost of the ferry ticket. I dont know the exact cost of the Hovercraft alone but I am led to believe it is about 7 to 8 pounds. Crossing time about 10 mins. This terminates at Ryde Esplanade, from which a 5 min walk over the road and up the hilly Union Street will lead you to Joe's on the left hand side. >What we need to do is get to Portsmouth, catch a ferry, get the last/2nd >last ferry back and stay in a local Portsmouth hotel that night. we need >to tie in the bus times with Red Funnel (ferry). Would like to clarify that the ferry from Portsmouth is operated by Wightlink. The Red Funnel service goes from Southampton to Cowes. Ferries are regular on a Saturday (at least hourly, possibly even more frequent) >Tony can you (or anyone else) advise? I am not sure how the >ferry/hovercraft crossing works. Is it better to get an all in ticket from >National Express from london? I would appreciate your advice very much. The Ferry runs from Portsmouth Harbour, which is also the termination point for the National Express coach service 075 from London Victoria. The hovercraft runs from Southsea seafront (about 1.5 miles away) and may be reached by a local bus. It would be better and a lot easier for you to get an all-in ticket from NE, but if you want to experience the Hovercraft then get a seperate one way ticket, bearing in mind that you will be getting a ferry back anyway. Until next time..... Tony ------------------------------ Subject: Sean Green's Midi From: Brian Date: Thu, 30 Apr 1998 20:02:15 -0500 Sean, One in a Million is perfect now. Tower of Power one day, Marcus Miller the next. I'd pay good money to have heads like that come to Pittsburgh!!! Chances are the fellow bassists have checked out these guys. But for all who might not have, you might want to look into: Marcus Miller (especially "The Sun Don't Lie") and his live madness, and Alain Caron under his name, or his old band UZEB, fusion phatness. Those are just two of many. There's so much music out there you have to be a wealthy man to get even half of what you want.
