Hansen Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 09:00:00 EST Hiya, I've set up a temporary mailing list for those attending the International LevelFest in London/Isle of Wight this coming May 23rd. Since there are travel/itinerary/activity plans to discuss, I figure that a separate list a more appropriate forum than the main Level 42 Digest. This is where we will post current info, changes in plans, etc. If you are planning on attending, or just want to be in on the discussions, please send me an email and I'll add you. Alternatively, click here: subscribe me! There's no one on the list as of yet, so please let me know if you're going to the ILF! Thanks, Eric Manager, Level 42 Digest -- Eric J. From: Andrew Goodwin Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 11:28:40 +0100 (BST) Another digest that I am on has a regular contest, where members submit reviews of albums by the band. A date is set by which reviews have to be posted, then a special digest is sent with just the reviews in it. Digest members then vote on which review they think is best. There could be a prize for the best entry (if some altruistic soul has a bounteous supply of unwanted Level 42 goodies), or alternatively the winner's reward could be a nice warm glow and the benevolent approbation of his or her peers. It's just a thought, a way of whiling away the weeks and months until the re-issues appear... From: "mike finn" Organization: MailCity (http://www.mailcity.com:80) Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 05:27:57 -0700 While Level 42 and their frontman bassist Mark King have had enormous success, specially in Europe, it was only in '92(almost 12 years) that a major Bass oriented magazine featured Mark on the cover(with Palladino). In all honesty I was thrilled to see my hero on a major publication, but the story only wetted my appetite. I was hoping for a little more credit to the man that made such an impact to bass playing(Trace Elliot's success had a lot to do with him), he gave the bass a new meaning. I know there are many of you that were inspired by him, he put bass on the map. Over the years I looked closely at Bassist magazines for a Mark King issue. NOTHING! Their section of A-Z Great bass lines, NOTHING! Letter K was not for King as L was not for Level 42. I thought that Bassist being an English mag, would take pride in featuring one of the world's greatest players who happens to be British but so far they have passed by him. I hope that it won't take another 12 years for someone to do a proper feature on the MAN that is an inspiration to a lot of us not only for being a fantastic player, but a great all around musician, songwriter, frontman, and probably a down-right decent person. Sean, I also have the album 'Fast Food Funkateers', but the group is named SLAPBACK. The album is just as you descirbed, smooth and very funky. Some of the cuts are produced by Larry Blackmon from Cameo, as well as George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. With that lineup how can it NOT be cool? If memory serves, some of the members of the group are related to Jimmy Jam of The Time, and Jam & Lewis fame. I have this on CD, so it should still be available in your neck of the woods, quite possibly in a small shop that sells 'used' CD's. My favorite track is 'True Confessions'. One last note, for other liner note junkies, this album was mixed by Susan Rogers, who mixed all of Prince's best albums, when he was still using the name Prince! Hey Ben, i must have been drunk when i wrote of that 12' single. Sounds like something Fred Flintstone might have at his house. Besides that error, Angel was gracious enough to point out that 'Micro-Kid' is on the SITL album, not "True Colours", as I erroneously reported. Angie, welcome aboard. Could we have one more person who likes the Chinese Way? Seems I'm the only person on this digest who will admit to liking it in public!! (ha,ha) Bilal, what a coincidence. I must have purchased 50-60 tapes from '747'. I used to get the mananger copies of 'Billboard' magazine, and he would give me free cassettes. For everyone else, 747 was a huge music store in Saudi Arabia that specialized in ALL types of music, but 90 percent of it was bootlegged. I normally don't buy boots, but this store was my saving grace. i still have all the tapes i purchased. Of course they sound like they were recorded in the trunk of a car, but it helped me keep my sanity while in Saudi. I was in Riyadh, so it wasn't that bad. BTW, Mike Payne did a little time in Saudi as well. So Bilal, when is the 1st annual Saudi Levelfest? I have scans of 2 of the cassetes I purchased at "747" at this page: http://members.aol.com/winman42/cassete.htm that's all folks, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Other Drummer From: lisa.hack @ bbc.co.uk Organization: bbc Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 21:58:37 +0100 Hello fellow fans, I'm Lisa a new subscriber, and fan since between Worldmachine & RITF, "Quick question: who was the drummer (other than G. Tony, thank you! The marriot is 88 pounds per night per room, do you know anywhere cheaper? I cant get to the Tourist office until Saturday, I'd appreciate it if you have any advice. I called National Express about buses to Ryde from London, they could only give me times of buses which connect to the hovercraft (if you catch my drift), but the last h/craft leaves Ryde at 18:45 (though the next ones are 10:00 and 12:00 the next morning). Here are the bus times from London to the portsmouth: 12:00 - 14:05 14:00 - 16:30 16:00 - 18:15 Here is the part I dont understand: First N/express told me the all in return cost was 15 pounds, (now they say it is 21 pounds inclusive of hovercraft) which is much less than what you state. Can you confirm this? I am going to call them again to make sure! What we need to do is get to Portsmouth, catch a ferry, get the last/2nd last ferry back and stay in a local Portsmouth hotel that night. we need to tie in the bus times with Red Funnel (ferry). Tony can you (or anyone else) advise? I am not sure how the ferry/hovercraft crossing works. Is it better to get an all in ticket from National Express from london? I would appreciate your advice very much. JoDaFlos shuts at 11:20pm. PS. That film of Level42 on the IOW was great! I know you must feel as though a great cloud has lifted. You know, if you contact Mica Wickersham at Alembic (which you'll probably be doing anyway to let them know you've recovered it), they can arrange to make it like new again. I narrowly missed the show last year when it came to Vancouver, but this year it's going to make it to Seattle (although Diana Krall is playing the Vancouver gig so I'll probably have to do that one). I've only watched half of it, so far, but the Mark King, Alan Holdsworth/Gary Moore segments are pretty good. Don't think it's something for every Level 42 collector, but for obsessive completists or for drummers, it's worth having. Got it from Audiophile Imports. I also finally got the UK version of FN, to go with my Japanese and Resurgence versions. They're investigating the alledged existence of a "20-bit remastered" version for me. By the way, Tower Records in New Orleans' French Quarter has, in addition to the Level 42 titles still in print, 3 copies of Standing in the Light. Call 'em if you need it! It was mentioned in the biography how much Mark hated school and that he always had trouble concentrating. Rob, glad you got you bass back. Not only am I in lust with Alembics, I'm in LOVE with them. Not just because Stanley and Mark play them. If there's a more beautiful, elegant, and classy looking bass on Earth, I'd like to see it!!!!! That's all folks...............for now, T. P.S.
