Greg, you have got to listen to their very first album, "Jazz Funk" I was working at a Holiday center in Nottinghamshire (Center parcs) around 1991, and as I was packing up my gear I heard this amazing slap bass riff. It was obviously an early 80's recording. I dropped everything and had to find out what it was. I really thought that it was some L42 recordings that I hadn't heard. I found a guy in the Kitchens, cleaning up who was playing this music on a ghetto-blaster. I asked him if it was L42 and he told me about Incognito. I went out and bought Jazz Funk the next day. Thanks to those who had graciously taken the time to listen to my midi files and all the nice comments that went along too! I also made some notable changes to certain parts per the suggestion of a few, so I hope that "One In A Million" sounds even better. It was a lot of fun to work on, but time to move on -- that one's a wrap. I will try to complete some other pieces off WM that have been laying stagnant on my hard drive and see how those go. Should have a couple more be mid May. We shall see. On a non-level-note (NLN -- hey...a new one!) I was going through my old cassette tape boxes, and found one by a group called "Flashback." The name of the tape was "Fast Food Funkateers" and man, IS IT FUNNNKKKKEEEEEYYY!!!! Check it out! See if you can find it. It is NOT Level 42-ish, but it is full of great melody lines, smooth soul, and cool-to-the-bone funky tunes. I don't know if it's out there, but I need to get a CD copy for myself. Has anyone else heard of them? I doubt if they are still around, but maybe so. Take it easy.... ~Sean -- *********** "The MIDI Extreme" *********** * http://www.flash.net/~questps/midi.htm * *** For the best MIDI files on the net!*** ****************************************** ------------------------------ Subject: Level 2??? I went to it... they didn't have any Level 42 postings, so I checked John Lennon. From: Rob Steen Date: 28 Apr 98 15:34 +0100 Hi Again, Some of you may remember that last September I had my most precious posession stolen from my apartment. This was an Alembic Series II bass. A beautifull instrument with a tone that was pure. Well, recently I found out who stole it! I found out a LOT more about him too. The police arrested him last week and their investigations led them to the bass. So, I have it back. It's a little damaged, a small warp in the neck and a tiny dent only I can really see. I can get the warp out and live with the rest. The relief at getting it back can't be expressed, I can sleep again. To all those here that helped by checking shops and by mailing me let me say a big thank you. It's in my arms again. Thanks, Rob. P.S. I have my flights booked for the ILF. [congratulations to Rob for being reunited with his better half! See you on IOW in about a month! -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Level Lyrics From: "Randall Collins" Date: Tue, 28 Apr 1998 10:11:25 -0500 I have always found Level 42's lyrics quite interesting. Even when I was married with step children, I exposed them to lots of their music when I was there and it was always interesting to listen to what the kids were hearing. For example, on 'Living It Up' the line: Living It Up, Living It Up...I can feel it....it's such a crazy notion...became... Living It Up, Living It up..I can feed it....it's such a crazy lotion... or The song 'Past Lives' was argued constantly with them. Is it 'Past Times' or 'Fast Lies' or 'Last Ties'.....very funny to hear them debate that in their serious child-like manner. Anyway, reading Terek's comments about Phil's lyrics is spot on. In fact, I was discussing this with Lolita the other day. I was telling her how SITL was becoming my favorite CD and the lyrics to that title track were really wonderful. I particularly love the opening line.... A summer's day in sixty-eight Sunlight through a window falls across the page.. That's so elegant! Anyway, we thought that maybe this song is about MK in his youth but since the lyrics were written by Phil, maybe it's about him...or maybe it is about Mark....any insight? Right, then! Here you go: Album: Standing In The Light Question: What shouldn't you shadow? > Duran Duran - Some of you may be regurgitating now, but > their pop songs had interesting rhythmns. Are there any DD > aficionados that know specific songs L42 like songs? > Come on, speak up! I have long been of the opinion that Duran Duran and L42 are similar in many respects. Take "New Religion" - that there is a kickin' bass riff. Same with "Sin of the City", from the Wedding Album. I'd love to hear L42 do this one. The DD instumrental tracks have simimlar feel and flair to L42 jams. While DD stays more traditional with their sonorities (you don't find anything like the infamous Lying Still bridge on a DD album), there are some similar patterns of thought. I have recently lost my World Machine CD. This upsets me because it's the first one they put out, the one WITHOUT the tracks all switched around and one removed and another put in its place (Take Care of Yourself, or Hot Water, one of the two), and I haven't been able to locate it, or find another one anywhere. Plus I'm in bad need of a Lying Still fix. Grrr to moving! Regards, ya'll! I've been a fan since the early 80's--Pursuit of Accidents, when I heard Chinese Way. The last I heard of them, though, was the Wembley Live album and I've often wondered what ever became of one of my very favorite bands. This list should be very informative for me! With Much Appreciation, Angie ------------------------------ Subject: Hopefully you will get this one! From: "Tony Sharpe" Date: Tue, 28 Apr 1998 20:12:59 +0100 Hi Gang, Long time no speak. I have been sending messages but they havent appeared, so I had to re-subscribe (the wonders of cyberspace......) Right then, some responses to Digest mailing 110 > Hey Dave, I once saw a video of Level 42 playing the theme from Hawaii > Five 0 (or the Streets of San Francisco). They were having a great laugh, > has anyone else seen that one? Got a copy on tape. Can't remember the title but it was an hour long documentry screened on British Channel 4 in 1984 about the boys and their upbringing on the Isle Of Wight, interspersed with live footage from their Hammersmith '83 gig. The Hawaii-5-0 tune was visually mixed with shots of the boys getting off of the Southsea-Ryde hovercraft. They also help a few youngsters who are learning and have a bit of a jam at the end, with MK getting carried away as usual! It also includes a snippet of "Tie a Yellow Ribbon round the Old Oak Tree" that they performed at one of the holiday camps on the island, which is a real giggle! I will dig it out, make a copy and give to someone at J D F's on May 23rd so you can watch somewhere. > 1) Anyone know when the last ferry leaves the Isle on a Sat nite? The last two ferries from Ryde Pierhead to Portsmouth Harbour are at 23:50 and 00:40. The cost is =A36.75 (English Currency) day return. The Hovercraft to Southsea stops a bit earlier and is dearer. > It may be a better idea to just book about 8 rooms at the Portsmouth > Marriott. It is right near the ferry apparently, and we can just continue > the party there in someone's room. Well Halleluja, I live about 3 blocks from that beast. It is a nice place and I have done a few discos there. In actual fact it is 4 miles from the ferry port, and a Taxi cab will cost about =A34 English Money. As I will be at J D F's I can give 4 people a lift back to the Marriott if you do book it! Hey, you can all come to my place to see the video. I have also got a (pretty beat up by now) copy of the Princes Trust concert too, unless my ex-wife has erased it (hell to pay if she has). Also on the Stanley Jordan/Stanley Clarke/Stevie Wonder tune. I thought it was "Overjoyed" on Hideaway (But I may be wrong as I havent played that album for a few years now) Until next time Tony Sharpe a.k.a "Mad Monk" ------------------------------ Subject: Winston - Incredible Coincidence From: Bilal42 Date: Tue, 28 Apr 1998 19:14:27 EDT Just thought I'd share this coincidence with you: Winston, I too was in Saudi Arabia in 1983 (Alkhobar/Dharan)! I used to buy tapes from a shop called '747' I think. Small world! Quick question: who was the drummer (other than G. Harrison) who appeared with L42 on TV during the promotion of Forever Now? From: powerfm @ mail.netconnect.com.au Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 18:16:01 +1000 Hi there, fellow Level 42 worshippers!!!! I'd just like to respond to Roy Lake's closing quote at the end of V#108, "I'm gonna %$#! her 'til the sun goes down", obviously from Physical Presence. Does anyone know if the feedback over the %$#! word was accidental, deliberately done live or multitracked on later??? This has had me buggered for about 12 years now!!! And while I'm on the subject of "electronic accidents", is it just me or can anyone else hear someone talking in the background on the intro of "One in a Million"????? Have a listen, it's about bar 5 or 6. This is my first entry into this digest, having been a subscriber for about 2 weeks now. I've been a HUUUUUGE fan of the band since I was 12, and the first bassline I taught myself was "The Sun Goes Down." And yeah, Mark King is my hero, blah, blah...This digest has been a breath of fresh air for me, since no-one here "Down Under" even knows of them!!!!! It's been great to read all your entries, you guys are my new family!!!! (No, I'm NOT a weirdo[much]). If anyone out there knows how I can get my blistered hands (I recently bought a double bass) onto any Level 42 stuff, please let me know. I've got all their albums, except Live at Wembley, some videos, some 12" mixes, but I don't have posters, books, a Jaydee bass (yet!!), T-shirts, and so on. If you can help, I'll shout you a Foster's!! And if anyone is getting married and you need a wedding song, try "Love in a Peaceful World." I used it, and it was a real kick seeing my whole family dancing to it!!! (Sorry if any of you are cringeing) Later.. Andrew Fry. (aka Spaldo) "...I said is everyone O.K....."
