Anybody insane reading this digest not yet in possession of this piece of music, e-mail me and I will give you the album details. They are called mondegreens. The reason? The person who first coined the term in the 40's misheard the lyrics to a folk song - he thought that 'the lady on the green' was 'Lady Mondegreen'. The term stuck, and according to William Safire (a US editorial columnist and lexicographer) it is the official one. Yet another piece of useless information to fill your brain. Ciao! Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Corea and Gadd Connection From: TyphoonPro Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 09:48:40 EDT Regarding Laci's and Randall's questions and comments about Corea/ Gadd connection: The Return To Forever Anthology collection called "Return to The Seventh Galaxy" (Verve 314 533 108 - 2) features 3 live recordings from a 1973 WLIR radio broadcast with Steve Gadd as a member of Chick Corea's band, along with Mingo Lewis, Bill Conners and Stanley Clarke. Too bad this band never made a studio record. By the way, the singer on the later Corea albums, including MusicMagic, is Chick's wife, Gayle Moran. Tim Longfellow Typhoon Productions ------------------------------ Subject: Misheard Lyrics From: Winman42 Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 10:21:00 EDT Jo-Anne, I have a pretty funny story about lyrics, especially Level 42 lyrics. In 1983 when Micro-Kid came out, my band and i were 'very' into Level 42. I had just gotten the Micro-Kid 12' single or the "True Colours" cassette, and the entire band was sitting at my place listening to it, trying to figure out the lyrics. Well, the line 'Knowledge fuels the mind of the few' was mis-heard as 'Knowledge fuels the mind of the 'FUGUE'. We all assumed this was the lyric. I was the only one who knew that 'fugue' was a musical term. We looked it up in the dictionary, and really got a kick out of it. Of course we had no idea what that line meant, but we went with it. We then named the band 'The Fugue', and it was years later that we realized we had gotten the words wrong!! Seems that the 12' single and the cassette that i had purchased in Saudi Arabia of all places, did NOT contain the lyrics. We all cracked up years later when we got 'True Colours' as an import CD. I've been here 4 years now, before that I was in Miami.I'm a sound engineer and bassist for local bands and in the studio. Up until now there were a handful of people that shared my love for L42, while in Miami it was hard to find cds etc.,in Greece its just as hard. Anyway, a whole new world opened up for me with the discovery of the digest and i'm greatful. If anyone out there has sheetmusic of early L42 songs please let me know. I have The Chinese way Dune Tune, Heathrow, and The Sun Goes Down(no tab)so if anyone is interested...Feel free to contact me! Wow, I didn't realize this was a difficult CD to find. Great album though. Anyway, I found 6 copies on CD available ranging (in US $$$) from about $15 to $33 on http://www.gemm.com/ Audiophile Imports (1-800-AUDIO-90) and Esprit in the UK should probably have copies available as well. > > Calling out an engineer to save the planet earth. > > Is it just me, or is that one of the weakest, lamest, goofiest lyric > lines in L42's entire catalog? It reminds me of that horrible > Carpenter's (?) song, "Calling Occupants Of Inter-Planetary Craft" and > Zager & Evans' dufus song "In The Year 2525." Hmm, never bothered me that much. Then again, the whole song is a bit on the sappy side (although I love it anyway, and think it's one of the better Guaranteed tracks). ------------------------------ Subject: Gary Husband w/Holdsworth last weekend From: angelina rogero Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 11:38:17 -0700 (PDT) Hi all, Unfortunately I couldn't get to my email when I found this out but I wanted to tell you all (although it's a bit late and no one can do anything about it) that Allan Holdsworth was playing at a club this past weekend (Friday and Saturday nights) with GARY HUSBAND on drums! I couldn't attend. Besides I'd probably be too nervous to go up to him. He played at the Baked Potato in North Hollywood which is about 10 minutes away from me. I hope some one in my area went to see/hear this. Angel ------------------------------ Subject: lyrics & keys From: tereknbobbie @ webtv.net (Terek Richie) Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 19:00:51 -0400 Hello everyone! IRT Patricks comments about L42's lyrics, they've definately touched base with many people on many different emotions. Phil Gould had more than a way with words! You could really tell that he felt strongly about the world around him. There are so few artists who have such command of words. Sting is one of the few that come to mind. If I remember correctly, in the L42 biography it said something about Phil feeling that he was the conscience of L42. I'm thinking he was right. Aside from his phenominal drumming, L42 wouldn't have been quite as potent without Phil's lyrics!!!!!!!! As far as keys go, I've always wondered just how much influence was Wally's. Take a moment and think how PHAT the keys were. Songs like "My Hero", "The Chant.......", "The Machine Stops", "Pharoah's Dream" "Two Solitudes" the bridge to "Lying Still"..... the list goes on. And let's not even get into the live stuff!!!! I haven't heard too many bands, whether jazz, funk, fusion, alternative or otherwise, that can even touch Mike/Wally, and I've tried!!!! CRAZY MUSICIANSHIP MAN!!!!!!!!! Any fellow musicians out there feel like me??? If anyone out there has any insight on the Wally/Mike mystery, please let me know. Take care Y'aaaallllllllll, T. From: Steve RULE Date: 28 Apr 1998 09:26:39 +1000 Hey, how's this for a delayed email.... sometimes I miss a digest. Dunno why, it just happens. Yesterday I suddenly received Digest 98#52, some three months after it was sent. Must have been floating around in cyberspace somewhere. Funny thing was, I didn't even notice it was an 'old' digest until I finished reading a post by Loz on the subject of ML's tendencies. Anyway, I thought I'd try your minds out with a quick quiz. Below is a question relating to a particular song, and one song from each of the standard albums. You have to try and answer the question, and by answering the question, you have identified which song it comes from. Clear? No, OK, here's an example. Album: World Machine Question : After all, we're only what? The answer to the question is 'human' ("...we're only human after all"), and it comes from 'Something About You'. Have fun with these: Album: Level 42 Question: What is it time for? Album: The Early Tapes Question: What is He flying on? Album: World Machine Question: Though He's often tried hard to change the rules, what remains the same? Album: Running in the Family Question: Which seat of the car is was He sitting, with Emily and Joe? Album: True Colours Question: How many words did He have to say in seven days? Album: Forever Now (BMG, Resurgence) Question: What do lovers only need? (Same answer as for album 'Level 42'!!) Album: Staring at the Sun Question: Where was the lonely boy watching from? Album: Pursuit of accidents Question: Where is it always greener? Album: A Physical Presence Question: What do heroes wear in that old story? Album: Forever Now (Resurgence) Question: If you come up too fast, what are you sure to get? I'd have included a question from 'Standing in the Light' but I lost it in a move a few years back and can't find a replacement disc! I'll post answers in a few days, but I'm sure you'll have them all by then! Enjoy! - Steve ------------------------------ Subject: need as years go by c.d. please! I heard Incognito is also very similar. True? Warning - lots of opinion coming. I guess I am wide open for tearing apart. Keep some semblance please! There isn't a band I consider musically VERY close to Level 42, but some bands have like shades: Larry Graham and Graham Central Station - this ol' skool funk band's songs are written around slap bass grooves by the originator, and singer. Check out 'Entrow' on Mirrors and all of the 'Greatest Hits' collection. Marcus Miller - Marcus' funk stuff is all written around the bass groove. Check out 'Rampage' and 'Scoop' on 'The Sun Don't Lie' and 'Panther' on 'Live and More'. Warning: The funk bass and drum work in Panther will knock you off your chair! Marcus also plays contemporary Jazz, but his funk stuff is similar to L42. Jamiroquai - especially the disc 'Return of the Space Cowboy' - Check out songs Mr. Moon and Scam. Duran Duran - Some of you may be regurgitating now, but their pop songs had interesting rhythmns. Are there any DD aficionados that know specific songs L42 like songs? Come on, speak up! Although I love Incognito, they are not similar to Level 42. Their music is far more subtle. Level 42's grooves come out and smack you in the face where Incognito's roam in the background, occasionally taking the forefront. Their disc 'Tribes, Vibes and Scribes' has regularly fascinated me, for three years now. In my opinion Incognito are more like Steely Dan than Level 42. take care, Greg
