It >fits the situation of the song (her family's rich, his is poor) and it >also works as a clever pun with the next line "and the butler's on the >breadline." Get it, dough, breadline, money, poor...? :D I always thought it was "..and the butter's on the breadline" I won't say what I thought the line before that was..."Mommy's eye is on the dough" makes more sense. On that subject, does anyone have any funny "Misheard Lyrics" to share? This song isn't Level 42, but in Message in a Bottle by the Police I thought he was saying "A year has past since I broke my nose". Considering Mark King's enunciation there has to be a poop-load of misheard lyrics! ------------------------------ Subject: Stanley Songs From: "Will Greer" Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 10:10:03 -0600 > The first one played > by Stanley Clarke and his band and originally sung by Stevie Wonder. > There's an excellent guitar solo of Stanley Jordan Sounds like "My Love, Her Inspiration", which is on Stanley's 1986 release "Hideaway". The first RTF album (1972) featured Chick Corea (Electric Piano), Joe Farrell (Flute, Soprano Sax), Flora Purim (Vocal, Percussion), Stan Clarke (Electric Bass, Double Bass), and Airto Moreira (Drums, Percussion). Steve Gadd was never an official member of RTF even though he did play with Chick on a couple of albums, most notably, 'My Spanish Heart'. I'm not sure what tune you're looking for, but here are the tracks on this album: Return To Forever Crystal Silence What Games Shall We Play Today Sometime Ago - La Fiesta If this doesn't help, let me know. Right, then! Randall [if memory serves, there's also an RTF album called Music Magic that features some female vocalist... don't remember who it is, though. -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Princely item for sale From: EMIKATIE Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 11:15:09 EDT Sorry to post this here but I think there are a few Prince fans aboard. Hopefully not everyone is tapped out by the ILF expenses. I've got Prince - Crystal Ball 3cd set plus bonus disc (4 altogether) for sale. I checked Compact Disc Europe and they sell it for $113.95. Digest members cost: $35.00 US plus shipping. (I paid more) If you don't know about the set, it's a compilation of previously unreleased tracks, bootleg material, live material and various other unobtainium. This is first rate Prince stuff. The sales-pitch machine stops, John ------------------------------ Subject: Sound alikes... From: Bilal42 Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 13:01:44 EDT On the subject of bands who sound like Level 42: I remember an album track called 'Driftwood' by A-ha, it reminded me a lot of 43, though this was a long time ago. Has anyone else heard this one? I also remember a track by INXS whose bassline reminded me of Starchild, does anyone remember that one? Also, Roachford reminded me of Level 42 occasionally, as did Incognito. Take care friends - Bilal ------------------------------ Subject: Wacking Funkers From: Dan James Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 20:08:05 +0100 All, Does anybody on the digest - perhaps from West London,UK - remember a band called 'The Wacking Funkers'? (around 1980). They often played at the Angel pub, Hayes End, Middlesex, among other places. Their repertoire included many level 42 tracks. I thought the bass player was extremely talented - Lord knows who he is or what happened to him. Any ideas? Regards, -- Dan James http://www.desol.demon.co.uk/puzzles/ "When a question is the answer..." ------------------------------ Subject: Bass Clarinet and Marcus Miller From: Lolitaj Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 16:36:32 EDT I will be leaving a message about the t-shirts later when I have my facts straight, but I wanted to leave this message for JazPhreek about Bass Clarinet. If you have an inclination to pick it up, go for it. I played bass clarinet for almost 10 years, and I absolutely loved it! My band teacher at the time did not see it as a jazz or funk instrument and made me learn tenor sax to do those sort of things. Had I had Marcus as a mentor, I would have stuck with it and still been playing today. It is a very versatile instrument and is a lot of fun to play. I e-mailed Marcus directly about it through his website, and he told me that he actually started out playing different clarinets first before he ever played the bass. He loves it and said he will always include it in all his recordings. Anyway, if you do decide one day to pick it up, let me know - I can help you out. Ciao. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Gotcha! From: Bilal42 Date: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 12:32:20 EDT > Calling out an engineer to save the planet earth. I have no problem with that line!!! and... speaking of TV show tunes (Dave Mock, yesterday's post), I love the theme tune from Starsky and Hutch (called 'Gotcha'). Level 42 would make it sound even better. Hey Dave, I once saw a video of Level 42 playing the theme from Hawaii Five 0 (or the Streets of San Francisco). They were having a great laugh, has anyone else seen that one? Take care all - Bilal ------------------------------ Subject: Space tunes/Lesley Simpson From: DonZipf Date: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 19:30:18 EDT > It reminds me of that horrible Carpenter's (?) song, "Calling Occupants Of > Inter-Planetary Craft" and Zager & Evans' dufus song "In The Year 2525." Actually, I think the Carpenters tune is rather charming because it's so goofy. But I loathe "In the Year 2525". The Byrds also had a space tune, called something like "CTA 102". Does anyone remember that one? It had Martian voices, and my Dad, being a radio engineer, recorded it to reel-to- reel and played with the speed & direction to try deciphering it. Can't remember if we actually figured out what, if anything, was being said. ------------------------------------------- A big Digest welcome to Lesley Simpson! Lesley, as you aware, some of us are visiting the Isle of Wight on 23 May. Any tips for tourists? Peace - Z. ------------------------------ Subject: More on MK's humility From: "Adrian Bond" Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 23:17:42 +0100 Thanks John for your reply on MKs humility. I think that your right and that his humility has a large part to play in why we may never see him do an instructional video. I know that Mark has said in a couple of interviews that he feels he doesn't deserve the 'Best player in the World' accolade that he has received so many times. He always seems sure the reason that he wins is because he's a singer/bass player and therefore gets more visibility than other bass players! How cool is that ? I also couldn't agree more about technique in music not being everything. In many respects it's like love making, it's the emotion that counts! (No jokes on fingering techniques please!) However, you can have all the emotion in the world, but without some basic grounding in techniques it won't quite come together. But, enough of my sex life, the real question is "How could MK be convinced that his bass playing skills are somewhat special and that some insight into them would help to improve others ?". By the way, my Pizza Purchasing Technique leaves a lot to be desired too, what's your secret ? : - ) On a different note, I'm with Zippwitz, I think it is LIL playing when they sail of into the sunset at the end of Hot Pursuit not Freedom Someday. If memory serves me right it's one of the remixed versions with that great brass/keyboard bit that they do at the end of the song in the "Live at Wembley" video. On the re-release front I think that a remix of "Hot Water" with the bass line pumped up would go down a storm. A Kickin' Tune, as I believe they young people of today say. Brian brunkle @ bigreddog.com ------------------------------ Subject: T-shirt info From: Lolitaj Date: Mon, 27 Apr 1998 00:43:17 EDT I am exhausted right now, so I may leave out something important. If I do, look in tomorrow's digest and I will probably have corrected myself. OK, if you are going to order one of the lovely t-shirts, here are the groundrules: 1) Anyone who is attending the Isle of Wight Levelfest, do not order a shirt separately. Just make sure that when I ask for the final headcount the second week in May, that you are included. 2) Anyone attending any other Levelfest on May 23rd, the organizer at your site will have your shirt, so don't order it separately. However, if you want and ADDITIONAL shirt, you must place the order with me, because it will be sent later. 3) Anyone who is not going to any Levelfests on May 23rd, send me an e-mail with T-shirt order as the subject line. The shirts are all XL, and the check should be made out for $15 to Lolita Jackson. Here is my address: Lolita K. Jackson 225 E. 95th St., Apt. 2J New York, NY 10128 USA 4) I will only take US dollars, so please get a money order if you are from another country. 5) I cannot fill any initial orders for more than one shirt, because I want to make sure that everyone who wants one, gets one. You can order more than one shirt, but you will receive the first one, and I will fill all first orders. After that, I will fill second orders first come, first served. I think that is the fairest way to do this. I will be making a spreadsheet to track exactly when people have ordered so I will know. 6) I must receive all orders by e-mail no later than May 16th. If I don't hear from you by then, I will begin filling second orders at that time, and they may very well be gone. We are only printing 75 of them, and while that sounds like a lot, if each person attending the Isle of Wight wanted 2, that is 50 gone right there. Now you understand why I will only sell one to each person. If anything is unclear, please let me know. The shirts haven't been printed yet, and Winston and I won't receive them for another two weeks, so please sit tight. Oh yeah - after some investigation, some of us have found that hotel rooms on the Isle of Wight are scarce that weekend since it is Spring Holiday in the UK. It may be a better idea to just book about 8 rooms at the Portsmouth Marriott. It is right near the ferry apparently, and we can just continue the party there in someone's room. Also, that will save time the next morning when we want to go back to London. Any objections? If I don't hear anything to the contrary in the next few days, we will do that by the end of the week. Later! Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: One last thing...
