New order) The promise (when in rome) Tarzan boy (baltimora) Drive (The cars) Final Countdown (europe) Lemon tree (fools garden) Bitter swet simphony Here I go (whitsnake) Is this love? I'm 99.95% sure it's "Mommy's eye is on the dough," as in money. It fits the situation of the song (her family's rich, his is poor) and it also works as a clever pun with the next line "and the butler's on the breadline." Get it, dough, breadline, money, poor...? :D ____________________ PFPD -- newmedia marketing consulting a limited liability company PO Box 281, Granger, IN 46530-0281 v:616.663.2250 -- competitive business advantages through creative technology ------------------------------ Subject: bands like level 42 / 1st entry From: Deana Redd Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 21:10:23 -0600 Hi, I'm Nigel from Utah. I have been reading the digests for awhile but have not responded until now. Only reason is probably like the rest of you, I would have so much to say, it would never end. The music means a lot to me as do the fine musicians that were involved in the band. Anyway, the point of this was to respond to people's inqueries about other bands that sound like level 42. The best one I could think of is Nik Kershaw. Check out track 5 on the album "The Riddle", maybe you'll recognize the bass playing (very signature MK). It's one of the best parts from Mark I have ever heard, and the whole album is great! Well enough for now, hope this isn't old news, more later..... I'm amazed that guy plays the bass clarinet and soprano sax. We all know he's one of the greatest bass players today IMHO, but exposing the bass clarinet is awesome! When I was in band in highschool, I never wanted to play it and always thought it was sort of an unappealling instrument. Now, I don't think I would mind playing one. It certainly gives a different sound to the music Marcus palys. Anyway, check it out. Sad news for me this weekend, it seems I won't be able to make it to the ILF in May :--(. So y'all are going to have to make it a big success so there will be more ILFs and perhaps I _will_ be able to attend them! Things are just too busy with work, school, and setting up my own company and stuff... By the way, I'm looking for sheet music or a MIDI-file of Mr Pink. Does anyone have it or know where I could get it? Thanks. Looks like finally the record labels have come to their senses, with all these re-releases and rare tracks albums... Talk Talk, Level 42, Ultravox and pretty soon also Alphaville... YEE HAW! :) Later all! -- "And we know that we know what we know. What a massive attack of responses i got, after mailing my set of questions. Thanx , guys and gals! I am truly amazed by the obvious love for L42, their music and other more detailed and technical stuff, on which several people have shared their experience, knowledge and opinions to me. A special thanks to Michael J. Pierrre Jr, who replied to me concerning the staff/tab vs. ear -question I had. Also, a big thanks to Greg Olwell, whithout whom I wouldn't have had the honour to digest the 'Bassplayer' - magazine -MK interview of march '92. It was very special reading for me, since I thougt I wouldn't get the oppurtunity to do that (he personally sent me photo copies). Now that I feel like I know some of you guys, I'll tell you a true story which is related to L42; Back in the late 80's, when I still was an eager L42-fan (which is nothing compared to now), my girlfriend went to the States for 10 months as an au-pair. Now, since she was my first true love, I was shattered by this. We kept close contact via telephone and snailmail and in every letter I enclosed a hand-written note with one of L42's songs, which fitted my emotional status at the time of writing the letter (not to mention how many times I would listen to the particular song). She later told me that she totally melted when reading the lyrics I had sent her. Anyway, we broke up a few years later and we still keep in touch albeit we have carried on with our lives and now have families. What I am trying to say ( which isn't easy not using my mother-tongue, Swedish) is that I believe that most of us, who care about lyrics and such, have found special songs which might put the finger on our emotions and that maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to let others know, via quoting selected parts in fitting songs, how we feel. That's a generic description of what L42 has meant to me, apart from great, GREAT music. The lyrics have content which really touches you.....but if your'e a Level 42 Digest subscriber, I guess you already knew that.. By the way, I stopped by Alembic's site today.....and left it in a hurry! I wouldn't say that those prices would fit my purse just right now... After having read John C Vaeth's letter of Digest #108 I can only say that: as of now, I will refer to Mark King as The King or Mr.King. I need some help, if it's possible. I look for two nice titles. The first one played by Stanley Clarke and his band and originally sung by Stevie Wonder. There's an excellent guitar solo of Stanley Jordan (he's an unbilievable guitarist who can play chords and solo at the same time!!!)The second is an old tune of the band Return to Forever. It sounds a brilliant funky&fusion staff of Steve Gadd, Chick Corea and Stanley Clark. Chick plays on Clavi and Electric Piano in this tune and some other songs on the same CD featuring Flora Purin. Is anybody outhere who knows something more about these recordings? Laci
