Personally, I have always thought that "Her Big Day" would make a rocking single. Anyone thought about "Over There" as well? ...Thats a pretty darn fabbo track. Although, if I had my way it would have to be "Man" (although No chance of this as its far too long for a single! A lot of email programs will automatically create a text (or Word or whatever) version of the message you're sending, and attach it. If this is happening to you, check your preferences settings in your email program to turn it off. > Calling out an engineer to save the planet earth. Is it just me, or is that one of the weakest, lamest, goofiest lyric lines in L42's entire catalog? It reminds me of that horrible Carpenter's (?) song, "Calling Occupants Of Inter-Planetary Craft" and Zager & Evans' dufus song "In The Year 2525." :D ____________________ PFPD -- newmedia marketing consulting a limited liability company PO Box 281, Granger, IN 46530-0281 v:616.663.2250 -- competitive business advantages through creative technology ------------------------------ Subject: Early Tapes, AYGB From: dirk.vael @ ArthurAndersen.com Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 16:41:55 +0200 to those desperate Euroheads plenty of Early Tapes in the shops here for less than $14 US, AYGB etc also avail. Dirk Luxembourg ------------------------------ Subject: The Humility of Mr. King From: jcvaeth @ juno.com (john c vaeth) Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 11:54:17 EDT Digesters, Just a note to thank Adrian Bond for his take on Mark King and his thoughts on technique. I have also heard Mark say how quite naturally things come to him on the bass. This is a great thing about Mark (and also about the other guys), to know that the important thing is MUSIC, and great technique can only serve the song. Regarding a Mark King instructional video, I will admit I would be the first in line to buy one. But don't you think, if Mark views his bass playing the way I think of just walking down the street, or the subtle technique I employ in purchasing a pizza, then he really has a right to some red-blooded modesty in the matter. It seems to me that the idea half embarasses him! That gives Mr. King a plus in my book.+ QUICK QUESTION - Does anyone know of a website with Level 42 lyrics? I am needing some help on a couple of phrases from some of these B-Sides. Is it "Mommy's ivy's on the door" in Can't Walk You Home? I moved to England when I was 13 and it was then that I discovered the band. I then spent the next ten years living on the Isle of Wight and during this time I was lucky enough to meet Mark several times, catch about 5 concerts and visit Joe Daflos every weekend. Since returning home to NZ three years ago I've lost touch with the band a little and am catching up now through the internet and friends still on the Isle of Wight. When not lisitening to Level 42 I work as Assistant Manager in a ladies clothing store in Wellington. I also enjoy socialising with friends, movies, live theatre and am a member of a local amatuer theatre group. Time to go, I look forward to hearing more about my special band Lesley Simpson ------------------------------ Subject: The answer is... From: Dave Mock Date: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 01:42:05 -0700 (PDT) Hey, Micro-Kids: Some assorted rants: 1) Just got a CD copy of "Level 42" from '81, to replace my cassette copy. Apart from the better sound, I like the longer versions of "Turn It On," "Love Games" and "Starchild," although Mike Lindup's lead vox were a bit low in the mix for my taste. It's the best studio mix of "Love Games" I've heard. 2) Was tooling around the WWW one day and read somewhere that Mark King or one of the guys was involved in a cover of the theme to "Dave Allen at Large." I can only imagine how funky the redo must sound. When Channel 9 in New York (in its Thames TV phase during the late 70s and 80s) started showing "Benny Hill" and "Paul Hogan," they also featured Allen, whose theme was one of the best I ever heard. Any Digesters concur? 3) Speaking of themes: I was tooling on a game show web site with WAV files of TV game themes (when I recapture the URL I'll letcha know). Most of these sound pretty light, but there ARE a couple that I could imagine our boys covering (backed of course by Da Henpecked Horns). Among them are the ORIGINAL "Pyramid" game show theme (1973-81) by Bob Cobert. It sounds like a funk instrumental masquerading as a quiz show theme. Tell me the bassline isn't something Mark would like to get his thumb around. BTW -- rumour has it that the original pyramid, from the show's '73-'81 New York years is still in the back of the Elysee (now Golden) Theatre on 45th Street. Someone at CBS told me they couldn't take it to TV City in Los Angeles when the show moved west in 1982, because they couldn't get it out of the theatre! The other potential L42 cover from quizland, of course, is the instrumental "Chump Change" by Quincy Jones, which was used for "Now You See It" in '74 and '89.
