Have been looking for it on vinyl for ages. Fantastic. I've lent it to a jazzy vibe DJ friend of mine and after much mockery of my 80s style, he loved it. I don't know anyone else's thoughts on bass amplification but for some reason, can't quite work it out (!) I'd always tried to stick with Traces but last Friday I had a rather pleasant experience. My band, Suspicious Package, went into the studios to record our first CD - I used this chap's Ampeg preamp with my Status Energy and I was, quite literally, amazed. I got the most fat sound I could have hoped for, almost an upright bass type of thing. Surprised and impressed. Fitted in very nicely with our Level42 - Shakatak - George Benson influenced sound. For anyone in the Luton area that very band, Suspicious Package, will be playing at the Artezium on 5th May bringing a welcome return of funk to Luton. Oh, and finally, I listened to Harry Connick Jr's 'she' album for the first time in ages this morning. The second track on that, can't remember the title....well, it could easily be Mike and Mark doing the vocals. A superb CD. Maybe anyone else has tracks sounding just like l42 but aren't at all? Yes, that's right, he wasn't on "Have I Got News For You", he was on "Never Mind The Buzzcocks" !!! (Thanks Neil !). I must have been more pissed than I thought and it was only 9.30 !!! I have met some fabulous people through it, and have gotten to know them very well over the course of the last three years. We are like a family, and out of all the various digests and newsgroups I am a part of, this one is by far the most congenial, civil, and caring group. In the words of that commercial, 'I love you man!' On to business. Please do not e-mail me about the shirts yet, because I am not ready. I have to figure out how much they will cost, particularly when I have to ship them. Look in next Monday's digest, and I will tell you where to send your checks and how much they should be for. IMPORTANT: If you are attending any of the organized Levelfests on May 23rd, DO NOT send me a separate check for your shirt. I will be sending the shirts for your site to the person organizing it there (Byrdman for Denver, Laurel for LA, Bill Wilson for Seattle). You can give your money to that person on May 23rd, and that person will write me one check. I will be shipping all the shirts for the Isle of Wight contingent to my hotel in London, so all of you can pay me that day as well. The only people who should send me checks are people who aren't coming. I hope that clears things up. Again, don't ask me about them until next Monday. Thanks a lot. He was the bass player for Cream. It's the same company that did the video of Gary Husband last November. The filming consisted of Gary's Moore & Husband with Jack Bruce performing the following tracks: White Room, Politician, Sunshine of Your Love, I Feel Free, N.S.U., Sleepy Time Time. The video is due out sometime during July. As most people know, Mark King recorded a version of 'I Feel Free' on his solo album. I have finished 'mastering' the Level 42 Connection Collection to DAT. I'll be making cassette copies as soon as I work out some minor recording issues. If the Garden Court fills up, I'm at the Plaza about 3 blocks SW, and it's a much larger hotel (although it doesn't look as charming) with over 350 rooms. Their homepage is at: http://www.onlinevacationmall.com/lon/hyde^^^/hyde^^^.htm > FYI, I was able to send a fax to these places via the net (no phone call > needed) -- everything (from checking reservations to booking) can be done > without making a phonecall. I booked mine right through United Vacations and got what I think is a great deal on airfare (RT from Seattle), 7 days stay, transfers to and from Heathrow and a week Visitor's pass (unlimited, any-zone bus & tube) -- the whole thing was just over $1500. British Airways has similar deals (and I'll probably wish I'd used them as they fly direct from Seattle but I wanted the miles on United :) ) ------------------------------ Subject: The Last two gigs... From: Nick Brazier Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 14:57:21 -0400 Hello there everyone!! I've only just got on this mailing list and I'd like to say how great it is to know that are still as many Lev fans around as I hoped (get to the point Jonathan!!) After a Sam Brown gig I saw last year, Jacko walked past and backstage (he was on her 1st cd Stop!!) leaving me in a state of shock!! After he came back from backstage I suprised myself and called his name to get his attention... ( it worked!! ) And I asked him what he and the rest of the band are doing at the moment, he said about his stuff for radio etc and I told him off for not releasing anything or touring (being the cockey git I was feeling!!) And he mentioned that Mark has the master taped for the last two gigs and it was up to him to mix them and get them sorted (sob!! - we all know what a lasy one he is judging by the lack of any new material!) Is there any news on these tapes ever being released?? And any of the b-sides etc??? Is there anyone from around Hillingdon UK on this thing?? I would love to get in contact with some more Levelheads!! I am 20 and have loved Level 42 since I was about 6 if that is indication of my love for them!! Oh yeah..... Does any one have the bass tab for 43?? Its the only bloody riff I can't work out and it really gets to me - its any awkward sod!! Anyway, enough from me....... Take care everyone ........ (Angus Deayton - the host- said that Mark > left Pia for Ria, is this right ???) I'm sorry to be so rude, but were you drunk sir? ;-) The programme with this clip on was actually 'Never mind the Buzzcock's'. It was a connections type round and you had to connect Chris De Burgh with MK. Obviously the connection being that they both had affairs with their Nanny's. L42 actually got off without a slagging off unlike most other people who appear on the show! However, Jonathon Ross did claim MK looked like a giant Carp! On another note, somebody the other day mentioned 'Dave Matthew's Band'. I have the CD 'Under the Table and Dreaming' which I think is superb. The first two tracks are fantastic and the playing is really tight. Anyone have any other CD's of theirs. Are they any good? Why am I asking? Well Mark was mentioned in a round about what connected him with Chris De Burgh (of all people). Any guesses?? Well the answer was that they had both left their wives for their childrens nanny's (Mark left Pia for nanny Ria). Chao. Yours unexpectedly, Glyn. (Drums stop.....very bad...very bad). ------------------------------ Subject: MK on the Beeb From: "Adrian Bond" Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 22:56:22 +0100 Hi guys I'm new to the Fab L42 Digest, this is my first message. Some of the "First Timer" demographics you asked for : Age 28, Into L42 for 13+ Years, Married with 2 x Children, Work in Computer Dept for a large retailer, Live in Arudel - W.Sussex, Saw MK play a bass solo on "The Tube" when I was 15 and wanted do nothing but play bass and listen to L42 ever since! In reply to Tom Brown's question about "MK on the Beeb". I watched BBC2 on Friday and Mark King was also featured on "Never Mind the Buzzcocks" alongside Chris De Burgh in the part of the show where the link between the artists must be guessed, the link being that they had both left their wifes for their nannies. Mark Lamar also said that he had left his wife Pia for Ria. I didn't see "Have I Got News For You", but did the same happen on both programs ? In the show Jonathon Ross tried to make a joke saying that Mark King had a face like a Carp/Koi! However, nobody in the audience / teams found it funny, and in fact the other team pointed out that Mark King looked nothing remotely like a Carp/Koi and that Jonathon Ross couldn't make a joke to save his life. No argument there then! I might be able to make it to the IOW part of the Int'l LevelFest (only 40 mins down the road), must check some details with Lolita J . Maybe see you guys there! Have fun Cheers Ade ------------------------------ Subject: Mark King snookerKing From: Henri.Blakenburg @ DUT.RWS.minvenw.nl Date: Tue, 21 Apr 98 9:52:54 +0200 Hi all, BBC 2 TeleText: 20 april at 19.50 p.m. Alan McManus plays to finish against David Gray, and Nigel Bond begins his game with Mark King. BBC 2 TeleText later that evening: Rising star Mark King turned on the style as he came from behind to lead Nigel Bond 5-4 in Sheffield. Mark King was undaunted and finished the session strongly and fluently to take charge of the match. "It's over" for Bond that match. Sorry for this little off-topic note. I know MK did some boxing, but MK at the world championship snooker? The only correct text for us is "Rising star Mark King" because he is working for his new solo album!! BTW: Andre, "It's over" is a song for P.S.V. Eindhoven (another Dutch soccer team), don't ya think? (and i don't like snooker) Adios 558 amigos Henri. ------------------------------ Subject: Bands similar to Level 42! From: "Charl Mocke" <9413693 @ narga.sun.ac.za> Organization: Stellenbosch University Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 09:17:57 +0200 Hi there everyone... I've been absent for quite a while -- studies!! How I wish I could go along to the ILF. Way down here in South Africa, opportunities and funds are very limited. Are you ppl going to meet Mark? If he does show up, someone please tell him: greetings from South Africa from me!! :) And take LOTS of photo's - for us all (unable to attend) to see and cherish! .......... IDEA: How about all of us who can't attend, mail someone who is going (like Lolita) a short message to Mark (limited to say 10 lines?) which the person can then print out and hand them all over to Mark at Joe Daflo's.?????????????? Everyone waiting for the Love In A Peaceful World MIDI file: please be patient! :) I'm quite busy with studies these days. This is also a mutha to write... and I'm adding extra effects like dual instrument stereo panning to give the MIDI an even "fuller" sound. Sean:- I tried again just now to extract the guaranteed_final.mid file (which wouldn't work earlier) and for some reason it saved! The same with oneinamillion.mid. I'll give both a listen this afternoon! :) I'm giving one of my older less-listened-to CD's a listen again these days: CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT - Keep Your Distance. This music is SO similar to Level 42 - great tracks like "Mile High", "Ordinary Day", "Red Lights", "Down To Earth", etc. ... especially to World Machine. Whatever happened to this band? Anyone? Although their vocals and bass weren't very impressive, they had excellent keyboard and synth sounds, and good drums&percussions, almost to level (!) with Level 42. ************ Which band(s) would YOU consider to be very similar (music speaking) to Level 42, and why? I heard Incognito is also very similar. True?
