Besides being my favourite album, Running in the Family, along with World Machine, was one of the most notable reasons Level 42 were at their peak during that time (1985-1987). These 2 albums are argueably their best 2 albums. Physical Presence is a live recording (also excellent) but Staring at the Sun is a bit different. If you like jazz/funk more, buy World Machine. If you like pop more, buy Running in the Family. BUT I would reccomend, if not only both, get all four!! :) > I wish you all Love In A Peaceful World, > Phillip Bolden Welcome to the Digest, Phillip!! Cheers Charl .... .. ------------------------------ Subject: Bargain L42 Discs, Deon Estus From: paul fucito Date: Fri, 16 Jan 1998 08:33:35 -0500 First off, the 2 new copies of A Physical Presence I have are already spoken for. But, if you are missing some of the earlier Level 42 releases I have found them at an absolute STEAL. The store where I found the two new copies of PP is part of a chain called "Music For A Song" and they deal with closeouts and imports (many for less than $10). They have an online search engine at "www.musicforasong.com" and under Pop/Rock search Level 42. They had brand new copies of Standing In The Light and Pursuit Of Accidents for around $7.00. That's a steal.... I have found so many out of print CD's and tapes with these guys. Try them. Now, for Deon Estus. He has been George Michael's bass player for most of his career (check out his work on the Faith album). Estus put out one solo album in 1988 called "Spell" and it featured the US top 40 hit "Heaven Help Me" (a duet with George Michael and Deon) which peaked at number 5 in 1989. And ironically, the album was released by PolyGram at the same time they still had our favorite bass player's band (which means by now it's most likely out of print). Cheers paul fucito PS: 80's fans... Pseudo Echo is now signing with a US label to make a comeback. They may do it under a new name though...... ------------------------------ Subject: Welcome Phillip & others From: "Eric J. He has also had limited solo exposure. Reese ReeseTee1 @ aol.com ------------------------------ Subject: Wow, if all wishes came true so quickly ! From: "Andre Huijts" Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 21:53:42 +0100 Well how 'bout that: only yesterday I left my New Year's wishes on the digest, and today already one got fullfilled ! Thanks Zak for returning the tape ! But you still haven't told me what you think of Zucchero's version of "Everybody's Talking" ! Well that's one down and two to go ! Something different: Has anyone ever heared of a bassplayer called Jerome Preston ? He played with Maceo Parker and I have a small part of the '95 North Sea Jazz festival concert on video, and this guy plays some funky bass ! He uses the slap technique although he "wears' the bass much lower the MK does. Anyone knows more about this guy ? By the way, I think Maceo Parker is woth checking out for all people who like the "early/instumental Level stuff", or Candy Dulfer (she's a big fan of Maceo). Greetings my friends ! I need an address to get rid of this check that is collecting dust so I can have those awesome Cd's everyone is talking about. Laura ------------------------------ Subject: Bass tablature website From: MSUSECOS.GJAMATE @ eds.com Date: Fri, 16 Jan 1998 15:00:41 -0500 Hi Levelheads, Mike Inzo asked recently about Level 42 bass tablature. There is a web site that has an archive of bass tablature. It does not have Love Games but does have two other Level 42 songs that may be of interest to bass players. These are 'Lessons in Love' and 'There Is A Dog'. The URL is http://sclwww.scl.cwru.edu/~dwm3/bta/ Mike, I have notation (not tablature) of Mark King's style playing Love Games. The transcription came in a book with a CD. I think the author had worried about copyright infringement and so the transcription is not 100 percent accurate. It is slightly off. Send me an email if you are interested. Off topic - I recently saw Tower of Power and met Rocco Prestia after the show. He was cordial and signed my cover of Bass Player magazine, but disappointingly, did not give the impression that he enjoys talking with fans. take good care of yourself, Greg ------------------------------ Subject: Not worth buying? Are you kidding? There is no such thing as a Level 42 album that isn't worth buying! Be a completist - get them all. I really enjoy reading all the stuff about what has to be one of the best bands ever! Today has been a great day for me. Being an unfortunate Levelhead who has never seen Level42 live, I have been in search of any kind of video for some time now. This week my wife, who went out shopping at the local Barnes & Noble bookstore, managed to talk to a salesperson there who knew who L42 was! She oredered me the Live at Wembley video and today I saw it for the first time. What a treat! Having heard their music for years, it was great seeing the boys in action. I'll tell you what, that Mark KIng can play a mean bass and he has good fun during the concert as well. I am very jealous of all you out there who have experienced L42 live. Oh well, maybe the band will get together again in time (look at Fleetwood Mac). I want to thank my buddies in The Netherlands, Andre and Erik, for their correspondence. It is greatly appreciated. I will send you guys something next week as I don't have awhole lot of time now because I have to go to work soon. Again, thanks for the digest and keep up the good work! Sincerely, Alan VanderWeyden ------------------------------ Subject: Tracie, and Level Best From: Brad Dietz Date: Sat, 17 Jan 1998 00:58:11 -0500 As I was revisiting Level Best, I noted a couple of things. First, I like "Tracie" on Level Best much better than on Staring at the Sun. I think the key and tempo are much better there for Mark's voice and the song. I don't know why there are two different versions. If so, which one is the "original"? It doesn't seem like one is the sped up/slowed down version of the other, but maybe it is. Anyone? Also, I find the shortened versions of the songs are unnatural sounding (and annoying), whereas I didn't feel that way when I played Level Best 24-7. Maybe all this is obvious, but I just thought I'd state my thoughts... I was watching Live at Wembley- paying particular attention to Mike's parts. I say he has LOTS of things to sweat over in the concert- changing midi, keyboards, singing the "middle" parts (doubling/harmonizing with Mark and Annie) as well as controling sequences. Speaking about sequences, who controls the tempos/drum machines? I think Phil should do it- being the drummer, but also I tend to think Mike should do it with all the sequences he's got happening. Anyone know of any Level Drum "tabs"? Ok- this is off the subject a little, but have any of you who play drums seen the Carter Beauford instructional videos? Just wondering... WOuldn't it be nice if all or one of the boys did those types of things. Lessons in... Level 42... ;) Anyway, that's enough of me. Thanks for your time. :) Brad Dietz
