My last three CD players have all had index display and index skipping capabilities. FYI, they were an NAD (whatever the Monitor Series player was in 1991), and two Sony ES players, the CDP-x303ES (my current one- 1994 model), and a changer from 1991). My current one is great for the large number of classical recordings I have- many of them (especially the Telarc recordings) use the indexes to subdivide movements into the logical breaks the composer put into the score! > I do, however, have software that allows you to index tracks; I just > don't think it's feasible. I've thought about what that would be like ever since they started the unplugged series. That would just rule, kick ass and more! But what would be the perfect track listsing? Some tracks would sound way better than others, IMO. Wouldn't it be cool if they played: 'I want eyes' 'leaving me now' 'at this great distance' (if Phil could only play drums like this...) 'lasso the moon' 'physical presence' 'good man in a storm' 'hours by the window' 'a floating life' 'dune tune' 'the spirit is free' 'knight' ... oh hell, I can just make a list of about every song. Running in the Family 11. Something About You 12. Lessons in Love 13. The Chinese Way (encore) I'm not entirely sure about 10-12, the order of them anyway, but I know all three of those songs are on there. This video is a *fine* bit of 4-minute moviemaking. It complements the song visually and dramatically, the symbolism is awesome ... I just love this video. Our fab four also look very impressive on camera -- they all did a great acting job! It's really a testament to the director for taking four untrained non-actors and getting them to pull off fully convincing performances. I think the only other time Level 42 have done this kind of video, where they're in-character 100% of the time, is "My Father's Shoes", with Mark as a successful stock broker who has lost touch with his roots. This one is more "situational" than the SAY video, not as abstract, but it reminds me of SAY since it has all the band members playing roles instead of holding their instruments and lip-synching. :) The other members are more in the background while Mark plays the "leading role", and Mark simply kicks ass -- someone should tell him he has great potential as an actor. If anyone wants the SAY video on Quicktime that was floating around here a while back, let me know. If it is as interesting as it sounds has anybody got a copy, or does anyone know where I can get it from? I'm very interested in pre-1985 video footage of Level 42 Live performances/interviews. The earlier the better. Can anyone tell me what is available and where I can get a copy ? Saturday Night Live was recently mentioned on the digest. I assume that this refers to the US Sat Night Live. I have a copy of Level 42 appearing on the UK version of Saturday Night Live (the one hosted by Ben Elton). They performed live versions of Something About You and Leaving Me Now. Is this footage rare? Finally, on the subject of rare video footage I also have the following on video which I consider to be rare: The Tube (1985): Live performance of Something About You and Physical Presence, and also a killer bass solo by Mark. Old Grey Whistle Test (85/86): Interviews and live footage of L42 on US tour playing in some (tiny!) venues. Again, how rare is this footage?? ------------------------------ Subject: What Mikey42 listens to! From: Mikey42 @ aol.com Date: Thu, 9 Jan 1997 19:25:02 -0500 (EST) Hello ALL! A few people ask me what songs I like to listen to and what video is my favourite, so here is my pref list. LOVE GAMES (Live at Crystal Palace 91) This version live seems to have alot of energy and compassion. Also, it highlights many solos aand quite a smashing piano solo towards the end. The backing vocals are truly top of form, Good Job Annie! (notice how we never talk about Annie, Annie's got a gun!) TIME WILL HEAL (Mikey's favourite B-sider) The song, as I was talking to Winston about, is very spiritual. You can tell Mike had a hand in its inception with lyric and foundation. It is a very moving and thought provoking song to me. GUARANTEED (Most dynamic/lift you spirit's up) This song is truly a classic for me. A KINDER EYE (Soulful Ballad) This song is so solid and reminds me of my grandfather very much, as he passed away weeks after I heard this song. I WANT EYES (Give Peace a chance song) If only they could have played this at Woodstock, I just envision a sea of tye-dyed fans swinging their arms and hands in the air with a lighter. IT'S OVER (Best Instrumental) I have the instrumental to this track, and it is awesome, even wothout lyrics, I think that the music could depress you without ever knowing what the song was titled or about. FOREVER NOW (Pick yourself by the bootstraps song) This song makes me feel happy, when my day hasn't gone according to the grand scheme of the world. It always reminds me that there is some poor sod, more worse off than me, and to get over it and move along with life. STANDING IN THE LIGHT (My childhood song) I moved around alot when I was younger, going from school to school, and it was very hard for me to make friends, because I would pick up and leave shortly there after, so I always saw myself, in hindsight, walking home by myself and playing by myself, wishing the neighbouring kids would ask me out to play, as I saw them having fun outside my window. (NO PITY PLEASE) KOUYATE (Most Tribal) This song should have been in an Indiana Jones movie somewhere! ALL OVER YOU (Cotton Club Theme) This song with it's funky brass, stepped synths, and staccato bass line, reminds me most of the last show I saw L42 in, I couldn't stop singing or dancing around. LESSONS IN LOVE (Long Distance Relationship song) I first heard this track while on holiday in Sydney, NSW, Australia. Every time that I made a phone call to the USA, I heard this series of EEENNKKK's whilst it was connecting my call, it remided me of the synth at the beginning of the song, as I was calling up an 'old' friend, but to no avail they weren't ever home. SOMETHING ABOUT YOU (Initiating a non-L42 person song) Need I say more, what a classic, as someone said yesterday, this song will live in FOREVER! Now if everybody in the world who like this song, would buy another L42 album, like we did, Yoko Ono, I am sure would be taking Mark King away somewhere to eat rice cakes and meditation chambers! EYES WATERFALLING (Most likey to be a brick in the wall song) The closest I felt they got to a Pink Floyd concept, thanks Herman Hesse, Last Chance! :) HER BIG DAY (Movie Soundtrack) I felt this should have been the lead song for the film with Hugh Grant, Four Wedding and a Funeral. Or Mariel's Wedding, but Abba must have bought the rights for that film. If you change your mind....! A FLOATING LIFE (The person who has more dosh than you song) My Cousin must have been the inspiration of this song! That and Don't Bother Me, what a BRAT! OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND (First favourite song) This was the very first L42 song I had ever heard! MICRO-KID/CHINESE WAY (So you don't want to be a L42 fan) Need I say more! YIKES! TO BE WITH YOU AGAIN (When my significant other bugs me kind of song) After you have exhausted every effort to hold a relationship together, this song only adds to my efforts, as of late, not enough! FALLEN ANGEL (Lindup's solo) Found the demo version to be flawless and although not polished, very soulful! It was neat to see Mike taking alot of vocal risks on his album, and the later of L42 releases. Good Job Mike! Can't wait to hear your new stuff! I FEEL FREE (King's solo) It was nice to hear Mark play and salute his personal influences, Jack Bruce, from what I hear, loved the version, much better than Belinda Carlisle's version, which was a cute as a button, YACK! GRESHAM BLUES (Ireland's finest hotel) Makes me want to watch the Glasgow Rangers lose at football, while in Dublin drinking a nice ale in a small, quaint pub! FREEDOM SOMEDAY (The walls came tumbling down song) I think Reagan and Gorby must have had this playing whilst in Iceland for their summit. Nice work LADS! TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF (Bummin around sort of song) As Mark was quoted, this song makes all of us seem quite materialistic and quite like a pack of twerps during the 80's with our walkmans and sunglasses at night! Can I have that Swatch in the window, it will match my OP shirt! FAVORITE RE-MIX- Guaranteed Whell Spin Warrior Mix FAVOURITE VID- Something About You/Take Care of Yourself FAVOURITE VIDEO- Fait Accompli FAVOURITE CONCERT (That I was at) That's not hard since I only went to TWO shows, Royal Albert Hall, mainly for it's impact! From: pattonse @ plu.edu Date: Thu, 09 Jan 1997 22:48:40 -0800 (PST) Hey folks, Well, a little late, but I finally got my Standing in the Light demo. I will warn you right now that it is a very dark album, in fact, it's called: SQUATING IN THE DARK _____________________ Track 1 - Micro Git - autobiographical song about Mark's move to the Isle of Wright. "Been a long time coming home, take a look at him now. And his days of boozing far gone, since he's porking some cow. Track 2 - THE GUN GOES OFF (HOLDING ME UP) - Level 42 robbed us of this original track. "Though I'm here at the bank, gun pointed at my side, there's a man with a mask so his face can hide. And he looks kind of scared as he turns around, to find the getaway car just drove out of town. Holding me up. Holding me up. I can feel it. I've got a crazy notion. Holding me up. Holding me up. I could steal it. Holding me up. I've got a trigger motion. So I'm ah taking the money, and I'm ah stealin it. I married to the mob, to the money, that's in the vault, I could've stolen too." and "There's a teller in the back making eyes at me, he gets shot in the back as he tries to flee." Track 3 - OUT OF BEER, OUT OF WINE - song was changed after this version was deemed to hungover. "I remember Buck and I, drinking beer and getting high, seemed too long ago. We were standing on the quay, as we blew chunks out to sea, in the undertow. The buzz began to go away, then I heard a copper say "it's sad to say it breaks my heart, but I'm forced to arrest you two drunk farts." Track 4 - RUMBA IN RAINY WEATHER - appealing to the ragaee community in the Pacific Northwest. "All across the town they listen to those weather fellas. As they try to solve the problem with their black umbrellas. Make a bet..it's wet. Make a bet...wet." Track 5 - A FARRAH'S DREAM - this is what happens when you get stuck in the 70s. "Last night I dreamt I was Lee Majors. And watching repeats of Charlie's Angels. Farrah Fawcett was dropping her trousers. So I prayed outloud to God to let me seeeeeeeeee." Track 6 - SQUATING IN THE DARK - artwork for the 45 single shows the lady on the cover of the LEVEL 42 and EARLY TAPES album sitting on the toilet. "So out of stool, he squats alone. And soon his colon's flowing quite the steady steam. And even birds up in the air with upward flaggelation claim to smell it's sting." Track 7 - I WANT FRIES - a McAwakening song. "Another "Buy One Get One Free" but the meat is still a mystery." Track 8 - PEEPHOLE - *NOW* we know what they meant by "adolescant xanadu!" Track 9 - THE LATRINE STOPS - nuff said? "I need some airrrrrrrrrrrrr. Down here in the bathroom. I warn you of my fumes. But I need to flush it, at this moment. There must be some window. To crack open. All of the paper is off the roll. I am a prisoner to this bowl." and "Spend a lifetime, on the toilet. The latrine stops. Best enjoy it." and the bonus track: CAN'T FIND YOUR HOME - the sad telling of a man late for a date and bad directions to boot. "I don't want to run my gas down. I am tight on money. If I stop now and fill her up, I'll never reach my honey. Taking rights and veering left, just to try to find her. The sad thing is her mom's a cop and her father is a preacher. I'm just a dolt. I need a compass. That is why I can't find your home. That is why (why) I can't find your home. Oh well.....RUNNING FROM THE ADDAM'S FAMILY is due up next. :)
