I checked the current timings on the UK versions of the CD's, and came up with the following. All of this is based on a 74 minute CD. Album Current Time Time Available The Early Tapes 41:45 32:00 Level 42 46:43 27:00 The Pursuit Of Accidents 58:45 29:00 (w/o the 2 remixes) Standing In the Light 41:00 33:00 True Colours 45:19 28:00 A Physical Presence 65:18 09:00 World Machine 46:55 27:00 Running In The Family 49:20 25:00 Staring At The Sun 49:43 24:00 This leaves a total of 234 minutes across these 9 CD's. That's the equivalent of three 74 minute compact disc's with about 12 minutes left over. Not to shabby. To bad this won't be a 3-4 cd box set of all new stuff, instead of us having to re-buy all of these discs. But I guess if they re-master them half as well as John Venzon, it will be well worth it. From: Takeo the LEVEL42 freak Date: Thu, 20 Mar 1997 08:27:50 -0500 (CDT) Hello! In reply to Lolita's question.... In Japanese "4" is pronounced in two different ways "Yon" and "Shi".....this "Shi" happens to be the same pronounciation of the word "Death"........"2" is pronounced "Ni".....together they can be pronounced "YonjyuNi" or "ShiNi".......this "ShiNi" means.....DEATH or DEADLY!!! Number 42 has been long associated with very BAD luck....so is 4 and 9. In Japan, they don't issue a Licence place that has number "4" or "9"...isn't this crazy or what! Anyway, I don't know why they changed the name of the first album and didn't change band's name........my guess is that 'band' didn't want the change. When Japanese record company issues record from oversea, they often change the name of album. It is a common practice. Because..........WE DON'T KNOW ENGLISH! I hope I answered your question....alot of people ask me why in the world this cool band choose "42" instead of all the number out there in the world......of couse, my answer to that is..." 'cos it's COOL man!" Another interesting thing..... "The pursuit of Accident" is called "Sun Goes Down" in Japan.... my guess is "Sun Goes Down" is much more simpler than "The pursuit of Accident"......any Jap can understand "Sun Goes Down"....ahh....San Gooz Daun haaaaaaaaa.......hai! Anyway, I know that there's more Japanese subscribers out there.....C'mon! speak up! Hey! I haven't got much responce to another free sticker deal.....does anyone want it or not? If I don't get enough interest, I won't bother to make them...... For those of you who got my sticker last time......you know how great this deal is......I mean what more can you expect from a fellow L42 fan? I'm giving this stickers away...for FREE!! That's right, I also paid for the postage last time!!! and I'm planing to do that this time too... His voice is phenomenal, but looking at him, you wouldn't expect such a voice (Kinda like the first time you saw Rick Astley and thought "That deep voice is emminateing from that skinny twerp?") The only black member in the group is their dijeridoo player (whose name escapes me). And, as far as the origin of the name, I remember from an interview that the 'iroquai' comes from a native american tribal name...the 'Iroquoi'. The 'jam' I'll presume has to do with 'jamming'... I hope I didn't come across as dissing Iowans...actually, I think Iowa is the greatest place in the world to live ( although the winters are absolute hell). People are friendly, smart, and trusting....no smog...a very low crime rate....small amount of traffic.....clean environment. I think people view Iowans as being backwards hicks, but nothing is further from the truth. We have the highest ACT and SAT scores in the nation, and yes, we do have a lot of farmers...more crops than any other state. Yeah, we feed the world....nothing to be ashamed of. But there's also culture...dance, symphony and so on. Admittedly though, musical tastes in Iowa are somewhat limited. We have a lot of followers who worship the Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Beck, Garth Brooks, and the usual mainstream stuff. Not that all of that stuff is bad, but it just seems like people think you're from Mars if, God forbid, you don't worship the mainstream. For example, I have 51 (yes, 51) Earth, Wind and Fire CDs. I have seen them in concert 3 times and have met the members of the group. Granted, 51 CDs borders on obsession, but I love the funk....what can I say? In fact, L42 is kinda the UK equivalent of EWF.....EWF members have even worked with 42 (Check out "Micro Kid" and "The Sun Goes Down"). That's what I like about this L42 newsgroup....it makes me feel connected to other people who aren't afraid to enjoy music that's not blared every day on stations that play the same 12 songs over and over. So.....I think I have my Saturday night playlist started: 8:00 hour Tainted Love--Soft Cell The Look of Love--ABC Lessons in Love--L42 Too Shy---Kajagoogoo I Think It's Love--Jermaine Jackson Fall in Love With Me--Earth, Wind and Fire 9:00 hour I Won't Hold You Back---Toto Get Here---Oleta Adams It's Over--L42 An Innocent Man--Billy Joel Let's Go--Wang Chung System of Survival---Earth, Wind and Fire Looks like a good show so far........thanks for your input...... Actually, for anyone interested in getting into No Doubt, try getting their eponymous first album- it blows the doors off of anything else they've done. IMHO, their thrid album is the weakest effort so far. They've moved away from their ska roots to a more mainstream sound (the preasure to purchase). The move has resulted in a great deal of popularity for them, but I'm interested to see if they stay in sell mode, or move back to what brought them there in the first place. On a side note, the band's great, as far as people go. They (used to) reply to notes personally. They used to have a mailing list set up so you'd know when they were playing in the neighborhood, etc. But, that _was_ four years ago! ;) Zaphod ------------------------------ Subject: A Quick Request from the DiscMaker(TM) From: John Venzon Date: Thu, 20 Mar 97 11:32:48 -0800 Kids 'n' chillins, Ok, a quick request from your old pal John V. Firstly, I see Mark Tweedale was commenting on the fact that some of the DJ only/White label/promos of the great band's music seems to have incorrect dates on them .. the music industry here in the UK seem to sticker things up on a regular basis with dates and then change their mind .. the discography is PROBABLY NOT wrong as release dates are put back for a variety of reasons, usually because the company in charge of pressing the vinyl is having problems .. Secondly, I am SOOOO GLAD that Ken Driggers is in fact LISA !! I was getting really worried when I had some email from 'him' telling me how .. how shall we say .. nice-looking .. Mark King was ... Thirdly, sorry to all those who have been hoping for me to put all my pictures/illustrations/etc on my LevelADS page. I've only had the time to put 4 on . I will try to get some more on the pages but the company I work for seem to think that their INTRANET is much more important than Level 42 Fourthly .. Can we try NOT to bring the anti-religion thing in ?? I personally am NOT a christian BUT I DO respect what other people believe in . yeah ?? 5. The 'best' one in my opinion is the UK's Music Factory megamix which segues Love Games, Something about You, Hot Water, Lessons in Love and World Machine. This mix is now deleted and no doubt some 'diehard' fans will mock the megamix idea .. but it was an ideal way of playing quite a few tracks from one artist without boring anyone who didn't like that particular artist. From: J Shuford Date: Fri, 21 Mar 1997 02:05:29 -0800 (PST) So I'm perusing the listings on CDNow, and I find this under Jakko: Jakko With Mark King Of Level /Road To Ballina (CD) Does anyone know anything about this? They have it listed for $21. I checked with PastelBlue, but they didn't have a listing for it. I haven't checked the Resurgence page yet, but it didn't look like a Resurgence catalog #. Needless to say, I went ahead and ordered it. CDNow has this listed as a "special order" which may mean that it is not yet available or that they are not stocking it and are only ordering in enough to fill orders. I'll send you a CD copy for free asa I have the DAO software) I started making the CD cover, based on a hi-res scan of the original LD... Dirkies ------------------------------ Subject: More discography...(sorry) From: The Bassman Date: Fri, 21 Mar 1997 10:33:19 +0000 (GMT) Yeah, yeah, I'm back yet again. Just thought I'd get back to you about some of the promos I wrote about yesterday. Guaranteed promo 12": Level2 ----------------------------- According to the Cat. numbers written into the vinyl... Side A: catalogue number: level2 Side B: catalogue number: PT44746 This makes the B side the same as side A of the commercial 12", and side A a special pressing. BTW, Lazlo, for this promo, side A is the "wheel spin warrior mix", and side B is "The New Avangers Mix" (ie the other way round from that on the discography!!) Take Care Of Yourself 12" promo (PZ 58 DJ) ----------------------------------------- The writing on the vinyl gives cat nos. PZ 58 for both sides - ie the same as the commercial release. Tracie 12" (PZ 34 DJ) --------------------- The writing on the vinyl gives cat nos. PZ 34 DJ on both sides, making it a special promo pressing. However, the tracks are listed as the same as the commercial release. I will have to check to see if there is any difference. I'll stop now. TCOY, Mark. From: J Shuford Date: Fri, 21 Mar 1997 02:52:40 -0800 (PST) I don't know if this clears things up or not, but this is all the info I could find on the Jakko/Mark King project, THE ROAD TO BALLINA. This comes courtesy of Jakko's newsletter on the Resurgence page: However, the biggest and most time consuming project is something that I have previously entitled 'The Road to Ballina'. This is a work that I have been commissioned to do by Radio 3. It is to be a 45 minute composition for broadcasting in the Autumn. Exactly what the finished piece will be like is quite hard to describe, but I will try my best. It is to be a musical and sound based work using dialogue, sound effects and scenes in sound tracing the history and journey of my family. As you may know, I recorded a documentary program for Radio 4 in 1991 that charted the search for my real mother, and the subsequent trips to New York and Arkansas in The States. For this Radio 3 program, I will endeavour to examine my own childhood and those of my adoptive Father and Mother, from Silesia in Western poland and Paris during the occupation. To this end I will be flying back to Poland with my Dad in May and recording the results. We will also by flying my birth Mother back to Ireland from the States for her first visit since she left in the mid-fifties and we will be recording that too. We are currently in discussions with various companies with regards to filming the making of this piece. I shall keep you informed of developments. As you can imagine this is both an exciting and yet daunting project to do. And until it is done I have no idea how it will turn out, or what musical form it will take. Whether it will contain songs or just purely music of an orchestral nature. So there you have it. I'm just as intrigued and curious (not to mention confused) about this project as anyone. Please let me know if you know more about this project and how it turned out. Shuf shuf @ darkwing.uoregon.edu
