I will only say this about everything that has been going on in the 2 weeks I've been away: I think this is one of the best, warmest, and friendliest mailing lists I'm on. Now let's talk Level. Does anybody have the complete lyrics to At This Great Distance? Or where can I find it in cyberspace? I was thinking, with all the re-releases of Level 42 albums coming up, and Mark's new album due to be released soon (I hope), is there a re-release for 'Influences' scheduled aswell? Maybe with some bonus tracks or remixes on it? Very funny, just like the Guaranteed demo he did. This stuff had me laughing out loud. Maybe I'm a bit silly after all the flames going back and forth, but this stuff if killing me. (especially 'It's Not The Lane For Us') This got me thinking that between all of the digest members, we could probably put together a heck of a humour book based on Level 42. I figure we have a good start with the fake reviews of albums by Joe, and the fake concert reviews by Mikey42. The fact that people READ English does not > mean that they also can WRITE English (I'm shure I make a lot of > mistakes, but-hey- who of you US and UK guys and galls speak ANY other > language ?????) What I mean to say is that not every lurker wants to be > a lurker. That is an extremely good point, one that isn't really discussed too much. I cherish the fact that there are so many people from all over the world here. As a matter of fact, the Incognito digest (which Eric is also administrator of) has very few US members, and most people who post seem to be from South America or South Africa, etc. That is why I never complain about people's spelling errors - it is interesting to me to see which words they spell wrong, and you can even figure out _why_ they are spelling them wrong (like shure instead of sure). English is one of the hardest languages out there. Anyway, I just want to support his statement that a percentage of lurkers may be embarassed - but they shouldn't be. This digest has shown that there are some native speakers who don't write or spell very well (not a diss, just a fact), so don't be bashful because of that! I will say I do take exception to the assumption that Americans don't speak other languages. Ich spreche Deutsch, and a lot of my friends speak several languages (two of them - natives, no less - speak 5!). Not all of us are uncultured heathens :-). Tschuess, Lolita P.S. I'm off to sunny Florida for a week, so anybody who needs me, my first day back is January 16th. ------------------------------ Subject: Jakko and Alan Holdsworth From: EMIKATIE @ aol.com Date: Tue, 7 Jan 1997 11:25:43 -0500 Hi Y'all OK. I may be on the verge of "branching out". I've seen references to Jakko and Alan Holdsworth in the digest. Do I need material by them? I must admit I didn't pay enough attention to the posts referring to these artists. Is Jakko considered New Age music or is it rock, funk or blues etc? Is it like David Sylvian's stuff? What about Alan Holdsworth? What is his stuff like. The reason is, based on the digest post's, I just bought the following two Jakko titles, Kingdom of Dust and Mustard Gas and Roses - both "imports". I remember one digest member was looking for some of this material. The shop had another copy of Kingdom, at a "domestic" price. I also found a Japanese import of Alan Holdsworth & Gordon Beck - With A Heart In My Song. Is it good? I have not yet opened them and wanted some opinions on them first. Input on the digest or private e-mail greatly appreciated. BTW Loz, I finally started the Biography. In order to savor every moment, I'm reading it slowly The machine stops. John ------------------------------ Subject: L42 on SNL From: rcol @ ix.netcom.com (Randall L Collins) Date: Tue, 7 Jan 1997 09:18:55 -0800 I saw our group play on a Saturday Night Live rebroadcast on Comedy Central and they were fab as usual. It was also nice to see the late Sam Kinison as well. Out of control as usual. I never saw SNL for most of the 80's since I was living in England but I was assuming that L42 would play twice as is the format of the show. I was a little disappointed because I would have been very curious to see what other track they would've played. Anyway, I got it on tape now and I can enjoy it whenever I want. These are the original members I would love to see again together someday. Randall ------------------------------ Subject: CD-Indexes From: Daniel James Organization: Mathsoft, Seattle Division Date: Tue, 07 Jan 1997 10:04:39 -0800 > Anyone ever tried to put indexes into one audiotrack. I have such CDs > (really rare) and maybe this would be a good alternative for the > impossibility to remove the 2 second pause. Even if your software allows this, how many people have CD Players that support indexing? My very first CD Player (which was one of the earlier models) supported indexing (at the time it was an important feature to me 'cause I have a few albums that are indexed). However, I haven't seen any recent players that will even display the index, much less let you skip to an index. > - I have the feeling that the regular writers on the digest seem to know > each other well (I think a lot of you have met) and this can sometimes > make people who don't write very often (or at all) feel like "not > belonging" to the "group". I do not think that this is intential, and I > think this just happens when you have personaly met someone,(or even > have extensive e-mail contact for a long time) that you will share more > easily personal "problems" or share your feelings. I do NOT mind > personal notes, it gives some background information of the people on > this digest, so it does not feel like we were all machines here. I can certainly understand that. Sometimes I may even feel this way a bit, but I still post--mostly because I simply feel comfortable with this group of people. I have also learned much from other people, and I *really* appreciate getting the exposure to other bands. Remember, we all love this band because we're not into the mainstream of music. I want to know what other bands are appreciated by others. > - Has anyone on this digest ever thought about the fact that not > everyone is from the US or UK, and so their native language is NOT > English ? What I mean to say is that not every lurker > wants to be a lurker. This may also be true. However for those who lurk for this reason, I can only say that there are many others here who do post whose first language is not English. I think that we all appreciate the comments and postings of everyone, and I've never seen anyone slammed for their lack of "proper" English. ------------------------------ Subject: Prodigy etc From: N Collier Date: Tue, 7 Jan 1997 18:41:14 +0000 PRODIGY: Just a quick message to say that I picked up a copy of The Prodigy by Herman Hesse the other day and am about half way through. On The White Funky Mark introduces a song as being "based on a book by Herman Hesse" and goes on to introduce 'Eyes Waterfalling' before being corrected (by Phil?) and introducing 'Last Chance'. So, are we to assume that the former or the latter were based on the book? From what I've read so far 'Standing In The Light' seems most similar in its subject matter. Anyway, when I've finished the book I'll write a brief summary for those unfamiliar with it and you can make your own minds up - watch this space. NON-ENGLISH LURKERS: I can understand sometimes how lurkers may feel a little excluded by the Digest; those who post often get to know eachother and so firstnames are used in their mailings - this may give the impression of a clique on the Digest, but there isn't one so PLEASE, lurkers of any nationality - if you have something to say (and you must) please don't be afraid to dive in - we're all equal here and no-one is going to laugh at your English. COUPLE OF COMMENTS ABOUT JP: > REALY guys, everyone who flamed Joe should read his FIRST msg. again, > and there are NO personal assaults in it. [...] > "bullying and bickering" Yes, PLEASE do read his first msg. Read it very carefully, read the responses to it - you'll find the first responses to his message were largely IN AGREEMENT with him and by and large, firm but INoffensive and tactFUL. Then read his second msg, read it very carefully, consider the implications of this msg and then think again whether this episode was petty and one-sided (as suggested by "bullying and bickering"). CHAKA: Lolita (as usual) is right. Chaka Khan is amazing. Check out the live stuff by her - a massive sound (how many does she have in her band?) great bassist, and an incredible voice. GO-GO: Just another quickie. What happened to the GO-GO bands of the mid 80's (Trouble Funk, Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers)? They had some pretty good musicians - TF had TWO drummers and CB had a pretty funky bassist who did a fine version of Stevie Wonder's 'Boogie On Reggae Woman' - any GO-GO bands still around? From: ByrdLvl42 @ aol.com Date: Tue, 7 Jan 1997 14:56:05 -0500 I HAVE NEWS ABOUT A NEVER BEFORE HEARD, TOTALLY NEW LEVEL 42 ALBUM DUE TO BE RELEASED VERY SOON!!!!! HERE ARE THE DETAILS!!!!!! READY? Now that I have everyone's attention. Can we PLEASE get on with Joe P. controversey, PLEASE. The truth be known I agree with both points of view. Yes, Joe may have been out of line, but lets be honest, many of you have less than diplomatic in your responses to him. If we truely are a "Virtual Family" can we stop fuming over this petty matter. PLEASE! Everyone who really wanted to put their two cents in has paid up. In Congress, there is an alotted time when a subject is debated, then after the time is up the matter is dropped. The Joe P matter is over. Get over it! My final word on this is how it reminds me of the scene in "The Untouchables" where Robert DeNiro, as Al Capone, addresses his lieutenants (sp?). Please insert Eric Hansen for Al Capone in this dialogue: ERIC.: A man becomes preimmient he is expected to have certain entusiaums... enthusiaums... enthusiaums. What is it that makes me happy? What is that which brings me joy? MIKEY: Booze? LOZ: Money, boss, lots of money? NIGEL: Dames, huh? Eric pulls out a Mark King Status bass guitar (complete with the LEDs along the neck). ERIC: LEVEL 42!! The gathered fans cheer and laugh. ERIC: What makes this band great, what makes them admirable is that the work as a team. Joe P.: Yeah, team! LOZ: Team, Team! ERIC: When a man plays a solo, this is a time for personal achievement. But when he is part of a group playing together, he is PART OF A TEAM! During a solo he can play his brains out. "Influences", "Changes", "Tin Man" and so on.... All laugh. Eric walks up behind Joe P., bass in hand. ERIC: When we post we are individuals, but as fans we are part of a team. This is not a time for showing off or grandstanding. We laugh, play, sing, dance, all part of one team. If we can't settle our differences as a team then we eliminate that which tears us apart. ERIC swings the bass smashing into Joe P. A bloody pool forms at his broken body. ERIC: We are a team.... My point here is not to bash Joe P., allright. Or LOZ, or Eric. My point is there is no futher need for this discussion. We are a group of fans, for crying out loud. This whole thing started because Joe wanted to see more L42 related posts. Is that so FLIPPIN' bad. Joe you were out of line. They stomped on your criticism, stomped on you, and wished you off the digest. Be a F*CKING man, swallow some pride and apologise. You were abusive and insulting in your responses, and an apology is in order. If you can't manage one, or don't wish to apologise, then stop constantly justifying yourself but insulting everone else. I say this not because I have any beef or problem with you, nor do I want any. I just want some peace and quiet. LOZ, be bigger than these events and offer a hand of peace. NIGEL, thanks for offering me those tapes. But forgive me for saying so, CALM the F*CK down. I know he insulted you over international ether. But for GOD's SAKE, man, get off his back. Haven't you ever said something out of line, and then was backed into a corner where all you could do was fight you way out. Have a heart and leave this man alone. Again, I don't want any hard feelings between you and I, but let this whole thing die. EVERYONE ELSE, come on. Let's move on with this already. We have spent too much time on all this negative, when this year we have so much positive (Levelfest '97, the Polydor ReReleases, the band's getting back together (I can only dream))...) Finally to quote a L42 song (as I'm so apt to do...) "...It's Over..." TCOY, Byrdman (P.S. Isn't it funny how us Levelheads allways say Take Care of Yourself at the end of a letter. I think its cool that a song that so much associated with the late great Alan Murphy is used as a greeting among fans. Salute!) From: David Goodall Organization: Sandstorm Date: Tue, 07 Jan 1997 22:04:52 +0000 Howdy, Firstly, just as I was reading Eric's post about obtaining 'Travelling without moving' by Jamiroquai, that's exactly what I was playing on my trusty quad-speed. Er, OK.. on to more interesting things (perhaps)... I was at a record fair in Southampton the other week when I came accross the CD video single of 'It's Over'. Ie it has three audio tracks and the video in PAL laserdisc format. It's one of the 'Family Of Five' CD video singles released at the time of RITF (as you may or may not have already known). Does anybody have any of the others? And were these released outside the UK? I also picked up a remixed promo of 'All over you' - although it sounds pretty much the same as the original. Next, a plea! As I've been away from the digest for some time could some kind soul fill me in on what's been going on here?? For example, someone mentioned about Polydor releasing rare tracks: is this true? I could of course read the old digests, which I will do as well. Regarding Mark King, does anyone know if he's planned any tour dates yet? The last I heard was that he was putting a band together with his new material. His album is (allegedly) due out in the first quarter of this year. I am a bit curious on how Joe seems to have such a thriving "life" but has soooooo much free time to think up such silliness. I wish I had that much spare time, although I could think of more constructive things to do... Anyway, last note on Joe: Man, you have mentioned being slighted in the "respect" area a couple times, haven't you heard kid? Respect has to be earned. Well....
