I've been a Level 42 fan for about 8 years and have been playing bass for 8 and half years. I live in England, about 30 miles from London. My Bass tutor got me in 42 and since then I've tryed to collect all Level 42 Material. Since the band have split I have lost intrest a bit until now, None of my friends like Level 42 (except the drummer in my band) and I've just read my first digest and its great to hear what other fans have to say. Someone was asking what the addition track was on the World Machine Album, I can't find who it was. Anyway on the UK version the additional track is "Dream Crazy". On the World Machine Album there is a bass lick towards the end of the world machine track and I've got no idea on how to go about playing it. Can anyone help, even if you can tell me roughly what some of the notes are? See ya, Alex "When those around me fall in despair, I call upon my common sense 'cause someone has to care." ------------------------------ Subject: Bonus track From: EMIKATIE @ aol.com Date: Sun, 5 Jan 1997 12:23:58 -0500 First, I must say I hope all you Europeans are keeping warm during the record cold spell. Now you know what I put up with in Buffalo, NY. Perhaps the cold is making you spend more time on the digest judging by the volume lately. While researching the question to the Bonus Track on World Machine, I found a few interesting bits. First, I too got WM as a German import. It has a black diagonal stripe down the lower right hand corner of the cover which says "includes bonus track". Nothing else anywhere on the CD, booklet, or case states what the bonus track is. I later bought the domestic US version which is different. I've seen a third variation which has a diagonal stripe down the lower RH corner which says "US Version". So there are in fact 3 different CD covers. Another interesting item is that my US version has a paragraph regarding the lyrics being printed with permission.... MY BOOK HAS NO LYRICS!!! The VERY interesting difference between the two is the "Management" paragraph. My US version says the "Management" is Paul Crockford. My German import version says Management: Paul Crockford AND Paul King!!! Anyone care to shed some light on this? From: Zaphod Beeblebrox > Anyhow, I have the mailing list for the AYGB colour covers ready, > and here are the people on it: [...] > If anyone else would like to receive these files, let me know before > Monday evening. Is it possible that if I contact one of the above people they could make a copy of the color cover and mail it to me if I cover expenses? I have no access to a color printer at this time but really want a color cover. What a superb observation. All 460 people arent interseted in the same things!!!!!! Maybe you should have beared this in mind when you decided that because YOU werent intersted in my posts, you wrote and actually said EVERYONE WASNT. Rember? Joe isnt reading posts with his name in, good, I propose we call the list the 'JOE PARRINGTON MAILING LIST'. Being as Joe is slagging of Eric, how about this. Joe wrote to me the other night and told me to have a look at John Shufford's post the day after. Funny how Joe knew what John was going to post before he got the digest. Hmmmm, nice, let get together and praise Joe. What was the point in telling us all what he had done, we are all intelligent people (although my spelling is dodgy) We dont ACTUALLY know Joe, he could be mother Terresa, the point was his digests were found offensive not his private life or his Level 42 history. When I came under attack I didnt bring out the big Guns and get Boon to write me a covering letter or anything, I just accepted that of people thought I was a sh*t. Why get at eric because he didnt se a letter backing Joe up, he had already stated that he wanted to drop the issue. Eric is now just one more person who suffers unneccessarily (now If I spelt that right Ill kiss JP). For everyone...... here are exerpts from a letter I wrote Joe: > #2. LOZ HAS GIRL TROUBLE - People....I don't care. When I get this > Digest, and I'm sure I am not alone or in the minority for that matter, I > DO NOT want to have to sort through postings about the latest on Loz's or > anyone elses love life. Sorry. This is your opinion and I respect it, but here you try to talk on behalf of the rest of the digest, shall we say 231 people at least. I recieved 22 letters of support after my posts about my girlfreind, if you would care, I will forward each one to you, whilst this is only 1 in every 20 people on the digest each person shared what they went through and some the Level 42 songs they listened to. I am sure you were alone when you didnt care. Although admittedly I expect 1 or 2 others felt the same as you. this is understandable 460 people is a lot, I get upset when people talk about thomas Dolby, Ive no idea who he is, in fact I once wrote to the digest asking for more Level 42 posts, but now I realise some people like him, maybe they asked him his views on Level 42, maybe he supported Level 42 at a gig, either way, they don't need to vindicate it, I just skip past it. > Don't mean to sound cold, and hey Loz, I feel bad. But share it with > your friend through e-mail, privately, THE REST OF US [emphasis by LOZ] > don't want to hear it. Here you speak for everyone on the digest, hence I can comprehensively say your statement here is untrue, and whilst I agree its not a literal statement, as I said above, I wouldnt even agree that a majority of the digest didnt like it, or found it in some way dis-tastefull. So, If anyone wanted to know, thats why Im so quiet, I have a big gap in my life, and a broken heart. I dont mind humbling myself, besides I couldnt get much lower. Not that I want to set everyone day off on a sad note or anything. Thing is, I only appreciate how mush true love means, now that it has been taken away. So, if you have a partner, learn from me, love each other as much as you can because everyone is special in their own way. I want to be with faye so much and I cant because she doesnt want to know me. It puts Level42 into perspective for me. Nothing to do with Level 42 could make me feel this sad. But I cant help making it worse by listening to, Talking In Your Sleep, Leaving Me Now, Its Over, Why Are You Leaving, Lying Still. I love those songs, they make me feel closer to my girlfriend somehow, they settle my mind, but make me more upset too. Guess I better throw in some info: Note Joe my message here, It is simply an explanation of why I had been away, prompted by several messages I recieved from people, (yes 2 from lurkers) asking why I was away, simply an open response on the digest to questions other memers had ever right to ask, and hence I had every right to answer, remember, just because you didnt want to hear it didnt mean that no-one else did (remeber Joe you said 'the rest of the digest didnt want to hear it'), again, I can forward these messages if you so wish. Notice also how I spoke of what Level 42 songs i listen to. A post about what level 42 songs a broken heart listens to and you protest?. But you dont want to have to sort through this sort of posting do you? Why not, Level 42 wrote Love songs, they wrote songs about broken hearts, what inspiration do you think they drew on? I can tell you, Boons long relationship in America in 1979 came to an end, followed by his relationship to the mother of Chyanna, his daughter. Mark split with Pia, prompting the song 7 years. Mikes unrequited love for a young girl at the London School of Music who he wrote the song desire about, the girl later played saxophone on many tears For fears tracks. Im sorry Joe but Level 42 wrote many sad songs so that people like me could sit and cry to them, and if I want to tell my friends on the digest about them, in particualr if people ask me, I should be allowed to: openly. A personal reply to me asking me to stop would have been more suitabl as the point you made was not relevant to anyone else on the digest. Note also the final words in my above posting, I continued with information about level 42. > I DO NOT want to have to sort through postings Just a small point, but if as you said only about 20 people ever write then surely sorting through the average 7 messages per post isnt much of a task at all, skipping (or sorting?) through mine would liberally take you 15 seconds. Which is not much to ask considering other people enjoyed it. > loz, Thankyou for your posting yesterday...... .... You really made my > day...... ...... I have been in a realationship for 3 months and I like > my girlfriend a lot, I'm going to tell her how much she means tonight, > you really must be going through a hard time, but your words made my > smile..... ....... Once again I can provide you with an adress if you so desire. Im not saying your not entitled to your opinion because you most certainly are, all Im saying is thats its not fair to say' most', and then 'all' of the digest didnt like the content of my messages. Not fair, because its not true. You elect yourself as digest spokesperson, and then fail to represent or give any credence to the views of many members. > #3. Afterall, I > have and continue to work in the press. Membership has it's priviledges. {this bit wasnt in the letter Ive added it now} As Joe mentioned in a post this week, he doesnt want to hear the facts unless they are complete. But what about everyone else Joe, should they miss out just because you dont like it? I wrote saying I knew 2 further songs but couldnt reveal them, which was true. When I could reveal them I did, is that REALLY SO BAD. Is It really so bad that some people know more about the group than Joe and he isnt informed abuot things before even they are? Im sure in the coming weeks I will find out something that I wont be able to tell the digest, maybe the proposed material for the video, and I wont be able to say becasue mark doesnt like people finding out before him, but does that not mean I cant tell the digest that the material has been decided? > #4. It will make it easier for everyone on the > Digest. This was a good point, but for people like me, Mikey42, Lars its hard because most things are 'tiresome' in a way. But generally I would agree that posts like 'how did the band get its name' and 'whos the man on the cover of Guaranteed' get asked much too often, unfortunatley thats because there are large variations in Levels of knowledge on the digest, its just something we have to put up with. > rather than pointless and often bland and redundant conversation. Its not good etiquette to call others posts bland, just because you dont find them interesting, maybe other do. This sort of statement just makes a bad atmosphere. > Because as for me, it is not my intention to hurt anyone's feelings, This soon changed. In brief I was a tactfull as possible to Joe, trying to explain my actions. The guy who Joe quoted that eric wouldnt send his letter. GENUINELY, I AM PLEASED he didnt like my postings, PLEASED because Im glad to hear that although others didnt care for them, they had the grace of mind to think that maybe some other people did care, and hence didnt write a careless message that ended upsetting someone. Im sure there are others out there, and to them I say If you didnt like my post. Im sorry, Im sure someday I will post something you Do like and someone who DID like me rather emotive letters WONTt like it. Thats the beauty of the digest. Anyway despite my best efforts Joe replied telling me how at the Levelfest meeting I am the brunt of all the Jokes, and everyone pokes fun at me, he then asked kindly if that 'hurt me'. Hmmm, what a guy. Anway, unsure whather this is true I will ay that I did my best. NB did. This may be extreme but I will be lurking away for a while. I saw a post earlier about Phil's nationality. Doesn't he have dual citizenship (born in Hong Kong to British parents)? I thought I read that somewhere. If anybody is looking for a good CD, Chaka Khan has a greatest hits out that has a song with MeShell NdegeOcello called Never Miss the Water that is fantastic. I didn't catch everything they had, but these are the most important parts: . The Early Tapes (2 Copies on CD) $18.95 . True Colours (CD) $19.95 . The Pursuit of Accidents (CD) $19.95 . Live at Wembley (CD) $15.95 . On A Level (CD) $12.95 (see, my offer of $7 was a deal!!!) . Love in a Peaceful World (CD Single with 3 old tracks) $11.95 . All Over You (CD Single with 3 old tracks) $11.95 . then the usual assortment of Level Best, Guaranteed, Running in the Family, and World Machine for somewhere between $11.95-$14.95 Now, on the prompting of the questions about Mark King and Phil Gould's involvment with M, I went back to Record Garden to pick up the CD "Pop Musik--The Very Best of M." The following information is a combination of the liner notes and what information about M that I have culled over time. * Wally Badarou contributed keyboard programming on Pop Musik * Wally, Phil, and Gary Barnacle played on the 1st M album "New York, London, Paris, Munich." This album was released in 1979. * Wally, Phil, Gary B, and Mark King played on the 2nd M album "The Official Secrets Act." The liner notes contain an error, saying that this album was "late 1980." This is in error because, as the liner notes go on to acknowledge, Level 42 had not yet formed at the time Mark, Phil, Wally, and Gary played on this M album. The liner notes also list Mark as playing "guitar as much as bass" as it "was prior to his discovery of his trademark sound." That's also not entirely accurate. Mark and Phil split time behind the drum kit on the album (owners of Mark's Influences album will recognize his playing in places). It's harder to identify his guitar work, at least for me. Finally, Mark only played bass on one track, called Maniac. Though it's not as wild and fast as the things he would contribute to Level 42 in just a matter of months, it's unmistakably Mark's playing. * Wally, Gary B and Mark played on the 3rd M album, "Famous Last Words." Again, the liner notes make an error, here by suggesting that this album included "the early incarnation of Level 42 (who by this time were having their own regular hits)" and "producer Wally Badarou." Phil did not play on this album, so technically I would say (as I have said many times before on the Digest) that "The Official Secrets Act" qualifies as the "early incarnation of Level 42," not "Famous Last Words." By the way, Mark plays bass on the track Neutron, and there is absolutely no doubt who is playing (if Maniac did leave any room for doubting that the "trademark sound" had not yet been developed). Okay, time for an album review. Since my interest in M is because of Level 42, I'd like to see more of the tracks where Mark and Phil are playing prominent roles--which means I'd like to see the tracks from "The Official Secrets Act" coming more to the fore. There are five tracks from the "New York London Paris Munich" album, four from "Official Secrets," and four from "Famous Last Words." The fourth album (which I had never heard referred to as an M album, until here) is called "Jive Shikisha," and Badarou contributes to this album again. There are 4 tracks from this album on the compilation, and the '89 remix of Pop Muzik takes the track total to 17. The product is a mixed bag. On the one hand, there's more bio info than any of the Level 42 compilation albums have provided, and the artwork is nice. It's also good to hear these tracks on CD rather than crackly 15 year old vinyl (which is where I've been with M to this point). However, the track listing on the artwork is out of order, and there are typos ("Tony Leven") and inaccuracies (as best as I've been able to piece together from other sources). It is 79'16" (not 79'12", as the sleeve reports). It is disappointing that of the two M songs where Mark contributed bass, only Neutron appears. However, other tracks like Transmission reveal an unmistakable influence on what would become Level 42 (as well as reveal the influence of what would become Level 42 on the music of M). If you can find it for a reasonable price (I picked it up for $14.95), I'd say for a real 42 enthusiast it's something you should have.
