Then again it all depends on the taste of who is doing the hiring. If I want vanilla, Will is my man, but if you want funky, I'll go with Stanley & Mark. Not that Will can't do funk, but hey, why not go with the masters? :-) As far as Shakatak goes, i would get some of the older stuff. They have really progressed to a more pop-jazz sound now. The older early 80's stuff if more in line with the early Level 42 sound. The older the disc, the better. That's all, Win ------------------------------ Subject: L42 Reunion /funk bassists From: "Kelvin A. Levels" Date: Tue, 18 Feb 97 09:45:55 CST Has anybody heard any more about the planned L42 reunion gig? I told my wife about it, and we want to plan a trip from Chicago to check them out. Also, being the old enough to have been personally influenced by some of the 70's funk, Here are some bassists you guys may not have heard of, but who were pretty good: 1) Nathaniel Phillips - played with a West Coast funk group called Pleasure (anybody remember the song "Glide"?) 2) Aaron Mills - one of the bass players for Cameo (plays the pocket really well, and had a tone that was "clear as a bell" 3) Louis Johnson - My first real influence, I was just starting to play bass when "Look Out For #1" came out...spent the next five years doing my best Louis Johnson impersonation (check out "Free and Single, or "Thunderthumbs and Lightning Licks") 4) Mark Adams - Bass player for Slave (anybody remember "Slide","Just Freak", or "The Party Song") - Damn, that was mighty good funk! If anybody wants to get more into the roots of funk bass, check em out! Maybe I'll get a wild hair and make an "old school funk bass compilation" sometime! The attendence was a bit below expectation, but those who came are real L42 fans. We enjoyed lots of records, CD's and video's, and did some shopping. We watched the 1984 Rockpalast show, this is great! It must be one of the best concerts of the early years. Mike's frog hopping on stage is very amusing. I learned about the word 'airslapping' (playing bass without instrument). This seems to be a common phenomenon amongst L42 fans. I myself am also into table slapping and steering wheel slapping... Andre, thanks for organising this event! When is the next one? By the way, it was me who brought the Guaranteed video. From: "BPHILLIPS" Date: Tue, 18 Feb 97 11:58:04 CST I was driving around this past weekend when to my GREAT surprise I heard Mix 102.9 (a local Dallas radio station) begin to play one of my faves, "Something About You". Needless to say, I went from being in a so-so mood to a being in a fantastic mood! And as a matter of course, I had to sing out loud at the top of my lungs (much to the chagrin of those driving near me :) ! As the song progressed to "...fashioned by fate, suffer so hard from the games, played once too often" the CD skipped! :0 I was horrified! The song continued until it was over but I was still in shock. I quickly got to a phone to call the radio station and "let them have it!" I met the band in 1986 when they opened for Steve Winwood in Portland, Oregon. Mark, Phil, Boon and Annie (back-up vocalist, but I'm sure you know that) were all so nice. Mike on the other hand sat in the van (their rental van, due to the fact that their tour bus broke down in California) and wouldn't talk to me at all. They all signed my T-shirt and I smooched and hugged Mark, Phil and Boon. It was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. I just got an account with AOL and It has been great knowing their are people out there that live and breathe Level just like I do. Tepper, Melanie Rawn, Mercedes Lackey, Tamora Pierce, Robin McKinley, Connie Willis.... oh, and a few men, too.... ;) (One of those is Douglas Adams, which is why I was a bit predisposed to like L42 in the first place. :) LOCAL COMPANY I'D MOST LIKE TO WORK FOR: Wizards of the Coast (if I ever suddenly develop real artistic skills.... ;) LOCAL COMPANY I'D LEAST LIKE TO WORK FOR: Microsoft TURN-ONS: a quick wit, intelligence, a creative mind, an easy smile, honest kindness.... and I could always crack the gratituous joke about musicians and their nimble fingers..... PET PEEVES: shrink wrap, strip malls, people without imaginations, people who call me Jennifer, my high school band teachers, Microsloth, most record company executives, and the people in the Eastern US who either automatically assume I'm from Washington, DC or think I'm from Ithaca and have some kind of backwards speech impediment MOTTO: "I'm going to prove the impossible really exists." -- Bjork -- Jenn ------------------------------ Subject: The Levels of Level 42 From: ByrdLvl42 @ aol.com Date: Tue, 18 Feb 1997 22:29:13 -0500 (EST) Another goofy rant from Byrdman (possibly the goofiest to date)... Following the "Level-42 Effect" post of a few weeks ago I thought about how I fit in the grand scheme of fandom. For those who might feel confused as to your level of Level 42 fanaticism here is my rating system for membership. These are guidelines and not set in stone. Like the Masons, after the initiate levels, the fan is told more of the secrets of the band and is granted certain special abilities and quests. Level 1 (White Belt)- Entry level. Heard a Level 42 song and liked it. Probally "Something About You" or "Lessons In Love". Curious about whether band has produced any other songs. Might buy World Machine as sampler. Advancement Kata- Student must purchase album. Level 2 (Pink Belt)- Initiate Level. Owns one or Two albums, probally "World Machine" and/or "Running in the Family". Satisfied with product. Might add album(s) in with CD rotation on occasion. Advancement Kata- Student must purchase more obscure album. Level 3 (Yellow Belt)- Novice Level. Owns three to five albums if in Europe, or a few of what is available in America. Might add an album in with weekly CD rotation. Know the words to at least one song. Knows bass players name. Seen at least one video. Might see a concert if they came to town as opening act. Highest casual level. Advancement Kata- Student must learn words to one album, and learn the name of keyboard player. At the Purple Belt Advancement ceremony, the Novice sings "Something About You" straight through for first time, the end of which he or she realizes, "Damn, this is a good band!" At this point they are hooked and can advance to next tier. Level 4 (Purple Belt)- Accolyte Level- Owns five or six albums including one live album. Knows all band members names (old band). At least one album is in with CD daily rotation. Has seen three to six videos. Might see a concert if they came to town if they headlined. Lowest level of fanaticism. Advancement Kata- Buy Video. Learn new members names. Special Power- Can hum bass line. Level 5 (Green Belt)- Fan Level- Owns six to nine albums, where one must be first album, and including one live album. Knows all main band members, past and present. Knows how Alan died. Owns at least one video. Anticpates next new album and consequent tour. Suspects that Wally is in fact the fifth member. Developing a CD source for missing albums. Might have replaced one or two albums once from overuse. Carries band literature to pass out to passerbys on the mall. Advancement Kata- Learn all supporting members. Converts a friend. Special Power- Backup vocals and air drum. Level 6 (Blue Belt)- Fanatic Level- Owns most of the original run of albums, including one live album, the first album, and possibly "Staring At The Sun" Knows all members names, including Crazy Crockford. Owns two or three videos if they can find them. Has replaced at least two or three CDs from overuse. Might add other groups in with weekly Level 42 CD rotation. Knows by now the band is defunct, and feels some remorse. Might learn bass/keyboards/drums. Highest normal level. Advancement Kata- Complete collection of original run of albums. Decide if he/she should care if band is broken up. Special Power- Air Bass After this point if you advance you're a gonner. These high levels require the utmost dicipline and devotion. Some have committed Hari Kari after failing in these levels. Here, at these higher levels, the darkest secrets are revealed, and the greatest powers. By now, the "Level 42" effect has onset. Advancement is now more fluid, no longer contingent on kata system. Although trditionaly the Fanatic was required to have seen a concert by this stage, modern circumstances have made this impossible. This practice has been abandoned for now. Level 7 (Grey Belt)- Manic Level- Owns all original records. Thinks Mark King is a god. Has replaced CD player from over use/better sound quality to really *feel* those basslines. Might attend a local Levelfest. Knows by now the band is defunct, and feels great loss. Wonders what man did before the invetion of Level 42. Has learned that Sting is really the Anti-Mark. Probally has learned to play a few level songs on a bass. Advancement- Must have killed a man in a argument over whose a better bassist, Mark or Geddy Lee. Special Power- The dred Fallestto Level 8 (Brown Belt)- Obsessive Level- Looking for any Level 42 material. Knows Mark King is a god. At the been there, done that stage and beyond. Now hears new nuances to old and forgotten songs. Previously hated songs have now become endeared. Might have replaced mate due to underuse. Knows band is defunct, and has been suicidal. Has learned to coexist with the Anti-Mark, but still holds apathy. May have had at least one Level 42 dream (Probally the one where Mark calls them to play bass for him, or Mark teaches he/she to play bass). Advancement- Must have killed a man in a argument over whose a better drummer, Phil or Gary. Special Power- The dred "Flying Thumbs" Level 9 (BLACK BELT)- Master- Has passed all tests of loyalty and valor, and gotten past Mike's Afro in "Love Games" Knows that Mark King is not a god, but is more like a Xena-esque/Hurculean camp-styled bass freedom fighter (possibly an Imortal). Mate may have replaced he/she from underuse. This is the highest level mere mortals normally achieve, after this point a complete change occurs. Has one to two "boots" in with normal collection. Advancement- Must have killed a man in an argument over which is better,"Changes" or "Influences" Special Power- Has Mikey42's number on speed dial At this point the fan leaves the dojo to seek his fanhood out into the world. I won't describe the levels past 9 in detail, but here are a few highlights. Level 15- Gets to tour the Trace Elliot factory Level 19- Pilgrimage to Isle of Wight Level 23- Has Crockford's number on speed dial Level 26- Must name firstborn after band, band members, albums, etc... Level 27- Administrator of Internet Digest Level 34- Gets to drive one of Mike's classic cars. Level 37- Can go behind the counter at Mark's resturant and fix themselves a sandwich Level 40- Mark lets he/she wear the "Clown" suit LEVEL 42- ***CLASSIFIED*** (has something to do with all things being revealed) "Standing at the master's side, Then with patience he confides Secret knowledge, sacred ways, Pearls of wisdom from the dragon days..." -The Chineese Way Byrdman (served with Fried Rice and a Egg Roll- $4.95) ------------------------------ Subject: Yet Another Profile From: Johndrums @ aol.com Date: Tue, 18 Feb 1997 23:26:39 -0500 (EST) Hey Guys and Gals here goes; NAME- John Wallace ALIAS- Daddy, Hey, Johndrums AGE- 33 (That's 231 in dog years) BIRTHDATE- 8/02/63 HEIGHT- 5' 11" WEIGHT- 190 lbs. From: "MNR. CA MOCKE" <9413693 @ narga.sun.ac.za> Organization: Stellenbosch University Date: Wed, 19 Feb 1997 10:27:29 +0200 Hi Levelheads!!! Being the only guy from South Africa to subscibe to this digest, I am happy to say that I'm back after a great holiday. Not many of you know of my country down here at the southern tip of Africa... some of the things you might have heard of us may be quite negative but I assure you we are not the Third World country many of you believe us to be. We are in fact the most technologically advanced country in the whole of Acrica. And no, there are no wild animals walking around in our cities! Our major cities are very much alike New York or L.A. (not in size though). Level 42 stuff are really hard to find in South Africa. Getting it from overseas costs even more expensive, with the high Rand/Dollar exchange rate is it is... about R4,50 for $1. So even if I would order some album from overseas it would work out more expensive than getting it over here, making looking for it in shops here the better option! I must say, these days I am hearing more and more Level 42 stuff over the radio stations... may we be having a Level 42 revival????? By the way, I write MOD files (musical files you can listen on your PC) and am considering writing a few L42 stuff... but I'll have more info about this tomorrow or so. I'll write again anyway soon to share some stories I read about the Gould brothers split out of L42... Anyway, I see all of you are entering "CV's" so here is mine for the time being, for anyone mildly interested in reading.....
