Well I've been here since November, but most of my musings have been bass player based than Level 42 based (best be careful what I say here). ERIC HANSON : Thanks for all your hints and tips for the Web page. I have put the digest links in now. I'll stick a link in to the actual Level 42 homepage, very soon. I am all for free speech, plain speaking and reasoned debate but I am absolutely disgusted with the Joe P farrago. I no longer care about diplomacy or political correctness, I want Joe off the Digest. No amount of his dedication to Level 42 or related contribution to the Digest could be worth all the repulsive nonsense my Digest is full of today. This is below everybody, we all want to move on but I don't think I can exist happily on this Digest any longer with Joe as a subscriber - and I'm damn sure I'm not going anywhere, I've made too many friends and get too much positive stuff from this Digest to walk away. This Digest was fine before you came along Joe so do us all a favour.... All that could be said about Joe has already been said and I don't want to prolong this saga any more than anyone else, people have already made their minds up about this unsavoury individual but today he plumbed new depths of self-rightousness and breathtaking arrogance. Joe, since you're no longer reading peoples' mails to you (head in the sand) I'm posting this to the Digest. YOU ARE WRONG. Boo Hoo Hoo... so some people took a swipe at you and hurt you, you asked for all you got. If you read the comments about you, you will see that we were mostly AGREEING with what you had to say but were sickened by the way you said it. NO-ONE twisted your words, your points were addressed one by one and YOUR OWN WORDS were used to illustrate just how wrong you were. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and taking the moral highground. YOU ARE WRONG. You started this whole issue, not with your first e-mail which was tactless but well-intended, but with the series of disgraceful and (after today's performance) unforgivable responses. You were the first to take the gloves off and, even if you have been personally attacked, I can't believe those attacks have been anywhere near as tasteless and unwarranted as yours. There is nothing noble in what you did so please stop pointing the finger at everyone else and end the 'persecuted underdog with the truth no-one wants to hear' routine I am certainly no bully and have no right to order anybody off the Digest but Joe, YOU ARE WRONG AND YOU ARE RUINING IT. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, everyone is entitled to voice those opinions, everyone is entitled to defend themself but the line must be drawn somewhere. Joe, I urge you to unsubscribe. WARNING! THIS POST CONTAINS NON-LEVEL-42 RELEVANT MATERIAL! DANGER! DANGER, WILL ROBINSON! Okay, I just returned from my vacation and am making my way through the last ten days' worth of digests to find that another flaming battle has ensued. Now, since a lot of people have been bragging about how they've been "a member of this digest since [insert month here]" or "for over a year," let me just say that I've been a member of the digest for over three years now. And I say this not to brag, but merely because I want to reflect briefly on a previous battle on the digest a few years back between myself and other members of the digest on one side and a guy named Bill Michie on the other. (And if any of you know Bill personally, then I'm sorry for mentioning him personally.) Bill decided to make it his business to tell everyone what he thought of them and their posts on a personal level (no pun intended). A lot of people (myself included) responded with personal attacks on Bill. It escalated into a bunch of crud, all day, every day, as Bill became more and more hostile. And when I say hostile, I mean downright shitty. Many people wrote to Eric asking him to remove Bill from the mailing list. Fortunately before Eric had to make that decision, Bill left on his own. What's my point? Well, my own two cents, based upon this previous experience is that Joe is right -- he did not really attack anyone personally (although his comments about LOZ were a bit borderline). ON THE OTHER HAND, I'm also going to say that Joe is wrong for having said anything at all -- which I think his post from this morning acknowledges. So, IMHO, this is all a bit silly. I hope we can drop it before Joe or anyone else decides to become downright shitty or even (Heaven forbid!) leave the digest. And I hope everyone had a great New Year's celebration. -Rob -- Rob Kadel Department of Sociology Emory University Atlanta GA, 30322 http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~rkadel/ ------------------------------ Subject: AYGB colour covers! From: HighwayHamster @ webtv.net (Glen Hambly) Date: Sat, 4 Jan 1997 11:17:26 -0600 Hi folks, I wonder if anyone knows whether "Take Care of Yourself" is available as a single, or on some other recording. I want to acquire the track (love it), but I strongly object to purchasing Level Best. I can't stand the fact that some of the songs have been absolutely SQUASHED; crucial lyrics ommited in order to fit all those tracks on the album. Let me know... (Maarten, thanks for the adresses of record shops!, I didn't buy any L42 so there's enough for you left I hope) I picked up a free magazine from Tower Records called TOP. In de reissues-section they mention: 'M - Pop Muzik, the very best of' with two versions of Pop Muzik and 'Official Secrets' and 'Modern Man'. Does anybody have this CD? I'm curious about the King/Gould connection here. Dirkies: The CD-ROM is a great idea. If I can help, don't hesitate. The only things I have are pictures and MIDI-files I downloaded from internet. But maybe this is something, recently I got the 'Pinball construction kit' from 21 century. You can make your own pinball-tables and yes you guessed right, I'm busy making one based on the L42-theme. Maybe this is something for the CDROM? just an idea.. Randall: The bonus track on World Machine is 'dream crazy', at least that's what I always thought it was. Emikatie: I have the Prince-3CD and it's great. TAFKAP sounds like the old prince again, the third cd is my favourite (the funkiest). That's all folks! Enjoy it nonetheless. Joe --- Greetings Levelers, Well, what do you know. My promo copy of the ORIGINAL World Machine album just arrived (yeah, go figure on a Sunday, right?), and shock of shocks, all these songs are different than the ones we know and love. So without further ado, here's the track listing and a smaple of lyrics from each song. Enjoy! WORD MACHINE ____________ Track 1: Word Machine - originally a song Phil wrote about his childhood memories of him and his Speak and Spell. "it's my lack of school, that brought this fool, to spell honey with a "B" the machine now stops, cause I can't find the switch, to replace the battery" Track 2: Physical Presents - the story of man receiving the greatest gift from his friends a man could get at his bachelor party. Lyrics are pretty much the same, however there is new meaning in the line: "it's not what she did it's the way that she did it" Track 3: The Clown Song - later renamed Something About you, this track tells the story of a derranged refugee clown in a yellow and black checkered suit that terrorizes people on trains. Kind of a love song. "If ever that clown, was concealed, no one could say that you didn't feel, a prick in your back, and a steady stream of blood." NOTE: This album also includes the remix of track: THE MOANING CLOWN AND TICKLE MIX Track 4: Leaving Me Forever Now - two songs in one, the band later decided they needed to seperate them. "I just heard that time will come to the depths of my despair, your lies confirming the big bang in my own eyes, takes just one look to know I'm still a holy grail or holy cow, I just want to live across an ocean of tears, in twenty thousand million years." Track 5: I Sleep On My Side - left off the final album for postaritys sake (get it? posture....postarity.....eh, skip it) "the time has come for dreaming, got a kink in my neck, and I just can't get to sleep, cause my wife has stole my pillow, and when I close my eyes, she take the blankets way from me." Track 6: It's Not The Lane For Us - a Boon song, recalling the time him and Mark came to the States and decided to rent a car, then proceeded to get on the Interstate. "I know they c ------------------------------ Subject: PARRINGTON'S POINT (part 2) From: pattonse @ plu.edu Date: Sat, 04 Jan 1997 23:58:42 -0800 (PST) Okay, as I was saying, the lyrics to: IT'S NOT THE LANE FOR US "I know we drive on their streets, I sometimes wonder.....MARK WATCH OUT!! (followed by the old lady bouncing off the hood) Track 7: Nude Man in a Porn - here we can see the roots of their later release Tie Me Up. "It sometimes scares me, the further in I go, just what kind of virus I might catch from this fat ho." Track 8: Quil'de Sa - a number Taco Bell contracted the band to do. "Run for the border, they'll take your order, now that your the boss, do you want hot or mild sauce?" Track 9: Laying Down - itended to be a sleepy rather than slow ballad. "She came through the door round my place, took an aspirin for her pain, I reached out my hand to take her temp, but she moved moved her mouth away, her head flew around in circles, from a headache so insane, I smelled that she had beer on her breathe, and she passed out for the day. Laying down in my bed, and the noise came out, she snored LOUDLY, like thunder rolling through an aching winter sky, the chunks came up, she lost the lunch she had inside." and then the bonus track: Dream Bi-Polar - Polydor thought the song didn't know what it wanted to be. "I love the way you start to glow, actually I don't, STOP IT! STOP IT! Dive into the neon love machine. Hey, don't dive in here! I'm naked! Now were as close as we can be.......GET AWAY FROM ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So there you have it. Supposed to pick up Standing in the Light promo this week. :)
