I had a really depressing conversation with a PR person from Polydor on Thursday. She says that if any of the previously unreleased tracks were released, they would certainly be mid-price and something that Polydor would not want to be seen as promoting. The company now feels it has to look hip and nineties apparently. The IRONY being, I was speaking to her at a hotel promoting the Bee Gees new single!!! Not a jibe at the Bee Gees - just the fact that I can't see them as a hip nineties act! It's sad to hear of the dissapointments some of you guys have had at UK record fairs - I went to a fabulous one a couple of weeks ago and spent far too much money on Level stuff. One of the little items I picked up was a copy of 'Sounds' from March 7th 1987 with an interview with Mark King. Has this interview been posted before... if not, I'll transcribe it when I get a chance - if anyone's interested, do 'e me. That's it so far. Smashie ------------------------------ Subject: Seal - Fly Like An Eagle From: Lars-Ove Karlsson Date: Sat, 8 Feb 1997 18:23:14 +0100 I just saw a new video with Seal (?) on MTV, 'Fly Like An Eagle', from the movie Space Jam. I thought I recognized the song, and dug out the second album by Habit, and found the song there. Now for those who don't see the connection to Level 42, here it is. Habit was the support band four the boys on the SATS tour. Here's my list of artists that I like enough to buy and album instead of just a single: Level 42 (of course) Mezzoforte (another great band, though the latest album was a bit weird) Enya Harry Connick Jr Wang Chung Kim Wilde Indochine Devo Movie Soundtracks by John Williams Matt Bianco Basia Stanley Jordan Housemartins / Beautiful South /Lars-Ove Lars-Ove Karlsson at home. ** e-mail: love.karlsson @ mailbox.swipnet.se ** e-mail at work: love @ iar.se ["Fly Like An Eagle" is originally by Steve Miller, although I also like Seal's version. -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: L42 at Ralph's, Follow Me, Michael Manring From: Jeff Grous Date: Sat, 08 Feb 1997 10:30:20 -0800 Heh- thought I'd pass this one on- was in my local Ralph's (big grocery chain here in Southern California) at about 11:00 PM when Something About You appeared on the store Muzak system! Of course, everyone in the store (well, the few lost souls there at that hour, anyway) thought I was a little strange, singing along...hehehehe... What a crackup. I hadn't been paying attention to the Muzak, but after SAY appeared, I noticed that the program seemed to be a retro-'80s kind of lineup. Cool! Dunno who was in charge of the audio that night, but I sure wish they did that stuff during the DAY! Alex writes: > Hey Brent, if you like Steve Smith and flailing bass players, check out > Michael Manring's "Thonk" album. Track eight gives MK a run for his money. Oh, Thonk is a GREAT record! ..."a deeply disturbed young man." I've seen Manring and Michael Hedges play together here at our cool itty-bitty CoachHouse venue- he's killer. Another great thing about that record is that Philip Aaberg plays piano on it. You know, another record that alla you bass fans might like to check out is Dean Peer's Ucross (Redstone RR91012). The record is essentially a collection of "tone poems," features some awesome playing and is really good! I think Follow Me is a fantastic song, and always wondered why it never appeared...? If it weren't for APP, I wouldn't even know the song existed. I sure hope it's going to be included with the new Polydor release(s)! I'm looking forward to seeing the shirt design- hurry up, Vince! -Jeff "The Digest way... Who knows what they know? The Digest legend grows!" ------------------------------ Subject: Catching Up With Level 42 Digest From: "Eric J. Hansen" Date: Sat, 8 Feb 1997 13:49:44 -0500 (EST) Heya folks! well I'm back from a six day vacation at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Perfect weather, shorts, t-shirts, sandals, etc... major R&R. My girlfriend and I had an absolute ball, and are pretty depressed to be back. Oh well, nothing like a stop at the Level 42 Digest to cushion the return to reality! So here's to catching up on some items that occurred while I was away... 1) Nice to see that things pretty much ran themselves on the list. I did manage to dial in once from Florida just to make sure that things were still running, but I didn't really read much mail. I also checked out the Digest via a web browser at the AT&T booth at EPCOT's "Innoventions" pavillion, and things looked like they were doing fine. 2) Shawn Foster asks where in Boston am I. I'm actually in Cambridge, just outside of trendy-and-historical-but-cliche Harvard Square. North Wilmington (where your sister lives) is probably about 40 minutes outside of the main metro area. Also, I, too was at the Police concert in Foxboro in 1983! My first rock concert ever... 60k people... what a night! The Fixx and Flock Of Seagulls opened! 3) Ronn Torrens writes about Partridge Family and Brady Bunch bands. Actually, there's a band called "Eve's Plumb", and also a Boston group called "Reuben Kincaid". Plus, I was in a band many years ago (high school), and we called ourselves "Jonny Bravo & The Grooves". 4) Mighty Maomoondog writes about Michael Jackson making good music. I gotta admit, that after hearing one of his CD's in a trendy diner in Boston last year, I went out and bought "Off The Wall". Some of his earlier (pre-Thriller) stuff is very funky -- this CD features Louis Johnson on bass (of Brothers Johnson). 5) Mr. Zaphod Beeblebrox writes [everything] both in text and HTML... clever! 6) Welcome to: Chip Davis (a neighbor in New Hampshire?!) 7) Lolita Jackson writes about "Old Prince" (The Artist Formerly Known as Talented)... hah! But seriously, I don't own any of his stuff, but he's one of those musicians that I respect alot, but don't totally dig... the same sort of feeling as Rod Stewart, Elton John, and various others. I heard a Prince tune on the radio the other day, though, and likened him (and the song) to Lenny Kravitz. If I'm not mistaken, Prince started out like Lenny, doing all of the performance and production for his albums. Also, Lolita mentions Lambert Hendricks & Ross -- one of my favorite vocal jazz groups (if not *the*). Completely unbelievable stuff. I'd recommend them to any vocal/bebep jazz fans without hesitation. 8) Marcus Bone asks what "PHAT" means. Well, like most other slang terms, I'm sure this word has roots in previous generations (my grandparents might know!), but you'll most likely hear it being said by kids these days. It means something like "really, really cool". i.e., "that party was p-h-a-t!", or "most of that disk is wack, but there are a few phat tracks". ("wack" means really lousy -- the opposite of phat). Alrighty then... now off to Travelocity to plan my next vacation! -Eric -- Eric J. I know the band played the Bottom Line in 1983 while they were enroute from Los Angeles, California. The were the UK rep in the 'Britain Salutes MY' Festival. They were in L.A. working on the 'SITL' album with Verdine White and Larry Dunn of 'Earth, Wind & Fire. Byrdman, speaking of the Level 42 football jerseys.. I had one until my little sister swiped it!! Along with a few other Level 42 shirts. I purchased every item when I saw them in concert the first time. Every shirt, Sweatshirt, button, key chain etc... Bye, Bye everybody, Bye, Bye... Winston ------------------------------ Subject: The Pursuit of 42 .. and Terry Ross From: "markhughes" Date: Sat, 8 Feb 1997 21:07:12 -0000 Hiya Gang Well, it had to happen. Someone from out there in electronic land remembering a certain Mr Terry Ross from the United Kingdom .. or 'home' as I call it For the people who have forgotten young Terry, or indeed, have NEVER heard of him, let me put you all in the picture. He is the one person on this huge island (OK - tiny island ..) that thought that the Level 42 fan club that was being run at the time was not quite what the fans wanted / expected .. and decided to start a fanzine called 'The pursuit of 42'. This magazine was put together on a irregular basis by Terry and some other LevelHeads at the time and gave us information about the band, pictures of the band, adverts for swaps, discography info, interviews, and a great place for fans to write into and swap ideas .. HANG ON A MINUTE !! THIS ALL SOUNDS TOO FAMILIAR !!!!!!!!!! ( An analogue version of Eric - Sheesh !! Grin! ) The news is .. TERRY IS GONNA DO IT AGAIN !! I phoned him up tonight and he told me he is going to do his fanzine again 'cos loads of people are rabbiting .. no, that's not it .. BADGERING him to start up ( obviously people without access to the net - which includes young Terry too ! ). He has already told me that he has spoken to Loz ( IS THERE ANYONE WHO HASN'T SPOKEN TO LOZ ???? ) but things weren't ready at the time ... Michael - His address is winging it's way to you now ( as is his phone number ). If anyone else is interested in what else happens, I'll keep you posted. One thing I will say .. HE HAD ABSOLUTELY LOADS OF LIVE STUFF ON TAPES .. and I do mean LOADS .. I'll keep you all posted !! Regards - Mark Hughes (LevelADS page) http://www3.mistral.co.uk/markhughes/ [sure, he's welcome to list the Digest web page and subscription info... see footer of this Digest for info! -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: First North American Gig From: "Jo-Anne Park" <691615 @ ican.net> Date: Sat, 8 Feb 1997 17:06:02 -0500 Alex Friesen wrote: > And for those who care, the answer was: > "Massey Hall, Toronto, Canada, where they did three encores for a > packed house." > The Question:? > Where was the first gig Level 42 played in North America? > (I'm only kinda sorta sure of this - anybody have other info?) That was their first gig in N.A.? I was at that gig! It was fabulous! I remember the last encore was "Are You Hearing What I Hear?". I was singing it all the way up Yonge Steet after the show. I remember half the people at the concert looking like Mike Lindup. (Tidy hair, slim, blazer, polished shoes....just the observation of a jeans/t-shirt type like myself :-) ) Actually, now that I think of it, I remember my friend saying they did a gig in the outskirts of Toronto first, Kitchener I believe, that was in a fairly small venue. He saw them there, up close and personal-like. They had arranged to do a string of gigs in the smaller cities but the Toronto gig sold out so fast they cancelled the others and did about three in a row in Toronto. They didn't realize that Toronto was really into Level 42, and had been for years by that time. I'm glad they played Massey Hall, though and not Maple Leaf Gardens! That's where they played the next time and it wasn't as good. The sound stinks there. Thanks for mentioning the Massey Hall gig. It brought back nice memories. AT any rate, a happy belated birthday to Eric and Elson. I really enjoyed the Bass Corner postings to the digest and now have a large list of bands and artists to listen to/sample and expand my horizons. I talked to my dad who is a big jazz fan, and like (I think) Daniel James mentioned, my father recently recommended New York Voices, and then I read the recommendation by Daniel, spooky! At any rate, I'd like to thank all of you for introducing me to new stuff. Here's some CDs I recently bought on recommendation: Me'Shelle Ndegocello - I have to say, I wasn't sure about this after the first play, but I recently played it again and really enjoyed it. Man, she's got a sultry voice! Howard Jones - "In The Running" I found this in the cut out section for $5.99, remembered that he had been mentioned and figured 'what the heck?'. I like it, so which CDs of his are must haves? Indigo Girls - Self Titled CD, I THOUGHT I had seen them recommended before, but now I'm not sure. I think what I saw was Incognito. Oh well, they're kinda folky, and I like the CD, so no harm done. Bob James - I have been a fan for 20 years. Try 'Grand Piano Canyon' as well as his early stuff. Man, this guy is great. Jamiroquai - When I first got the digest, how ever long ago that was, 'Emergency on Planet Earth' was really pushed, I knew someone who had it and they raved about it. They were surprised that I was even asking about it. I like it, get it if you don't have it. Now, I have a question. I called the Virgin Megastore in S.F. this week and they have amongst their Level 42 stuff CD(s) called 'The Dance Remixes' or 'The Dance Mixes'. What is this? I don't believe I've ever seen this mentioned before. Don't tell to get on the Web because I can't...so if someone would be so kind as to help me out here, I would really appreciate it. The last thing I would like to do is ask those of you in a band, I love supporting local bands who put out cassettes or CDs, please if you could send me some email about how I could purchase one of your efforts, please don't hesitate to do so. Doug P.S. I figured I would be the oldest list member, but last week in my reading I saw someone write that they were in their 40s, damn, at least I don't feel like gramps so much anymore. I'm 38 by the way. Go ahead, poke fun. P.P.S. Is anybody selling T-Shirts this year as Zak did last year? If so, can someone let me know, for sure? I don't wanna miss out this time. I hope to be caught up soon, but Feb 15 is slipping by the boards I fear, probably by the end of the month, now.
