Green" Date: Wed, 05 Feb 1997 06:12:50 -0600 Hey all, Just picked up a different version of Forever Now in the store today. I had originally purchased the UK version with the graphic cover, and have now purchased one from Austria / Resurgence. The main thing that I have noticed, obviously, is the change of songs on each. Also, the mixing on certain songs is a little different as well! Here's the play list from this Austrian copy: Billy's Gone The Bends Play Me The Sunbed Song Past Lives Don't Bother Me Heart On The Line (SKELETAL) Romance Time Will Heal Learn To Say No Forever Now Model Friend Love In A Peaceful World One In A Million Talking In Your Sleep So, is this one any different from what others have purchased? Just wondering. The cover has Mark and Mike in front of some geodesic dome that is in the background. Thanks for any help on this. Also, if anyone needs a copy, let me know. Sean ------------------------------ Subject: Record fairs/Roy Castle From: steve @ redac.co.uk (Steve Robson) Date: Wed, 5 Feb 97 12:15:49 GMT What ho! The recent talk of record fairs reminded me of my last visit to one. Don't do what I did! I was wearing my "London December '90" sweatshirt which stallholders immediately picked up on and added £30 to the price of any item! Best ploy is to wear a t-shirt bearing a "Hoover vacuum cleaners" logo (or similar) and when you see that L42 item you've been searching for for five years, just screw up your nose and pretend you don't want it, then "change your mind" and offer to take it off the stallholder's hands for a fiver!! I currently have the Live at Wembley CD in the car and when MK witters on about setting a new attendance record, he says "Where's Roy Castle?". I checked the digest archive for references and couldn't see that this had been answered before so I thought I'd enlighten all non-UK digesters as to who Roy Castle is!! He used to present a children's TV programme called "Record Breakers". (He died a few years ago from illness related to the lung cancer he had, although he never smoked. He attributed the cancer to the years he spent playing trumpet in smoky clubs.) The programme featured reports on existing World Records and attempts to break them and attempts to create new ones. It's been on TV for at least 25 years and is now presented by Kriss Akabussi (athlete) and Cheryl Baker (was in pop group Bucks Fizz when they won Eurovision with Making your mind up). So now you know! Does the sax part in "Heathrow" bring anybody else out in goose-bumps or is it just me? Cheers, Steve e-mail: steve_robson @ redac.co.uk Zuken-Redac (UK) Ltd. Anyone know where I can get a copy?? As far as I know, Thunderthumbs was a project from Mark King and Mike Lindup, before 1986 (don't know the exact year). They released a single, called Freedom. Polydor wasn't very happy with this project, cause they thought it could harm the Level 42 interests, so they refused to promote the single, although they couldn't refuse the release of the single. Sorry, but that's AOL for you. Don't you just love it? I have since re done the pages. It seems to be working fine now. I just hope it stays that way. *** Please note that the LEVEL 42 logos at the bottom of each page, the one that say "click here to see the next design", ARE NOT A PART OF THE T-SHIRT AND HAT DESIGNS!! I just tried to use them as 'buttons', to go to the next page. Sorry for the confusion, because a few people thought they were part of the designs. Actually I had no idea Mr. Trabek was from Canada when I originally wrote that. I still say he's one of our own! Afterall, EVERYONE knows Canada is part of the United States! :-) MWVK writes: > Does anyone know if I can legally make copies for my level brothers > and sisters without breaking any copyright laws? My interpretation of the copyright laws is this: It's definitely a no-no to make, distribute, and sell copies of any kind of formatted music (books, sheet music, CD's, tapes, etc.). You can make a copy of a particular piece of music for yourself. Record companies don't say this and I can understand. These companies say (or claim to say) that they lose millions and millions of dollars a year due to music piracy. This is true for actual "businesses" who actually profit from this illegal activity. Now for us consumers, the law still does apply but it is, of course, never enforced. Everybody copies stuff and gives it to friends, family, etc, and I'm certainly no exception. I've done that for years! It's just a matter of exposing those to great music without any profit motif. Besides, I think that as long as there are rare and hard-to-find recordings out there, copying them for someone is OK, according to ME. Don't worry about it. Maybe this can encourage Polydor to release and re-release all of the great hits, B-sides, raritites, live sets, etc of L42. I personally like having my own CD of something but if I can't, I will ask for help in getting certain tracks that I know I won't be able to find anywhere. Copy away! Me writes: I like the idea of all of us digesters writing to Polydor to encourage them to release a CD or a set of CDs by L42. I wouldn't even mind a box set. Whatever Polydor feels would be appropriate. I don't think you could put a price on a well-thoughout, well-designed set of good Level tunes and rarities as well as a very comprehensive booklet. Hey, Polydor can even throw in some digital remastering to really make them sparkle. Maybe this is just a fantasy. What do you think, folks? Freedom (m.king) released by Mark & MIke in July of 1982, this 12" single is backed with "Freedom A GoGo', an instrumental version with a killer bass solo. The duo used the psuedonym "Thunderthumbs And The Toetsenman" for this track, which came from an idea Mark had during rehearsals for 'Love Games'. Originally slated to be the lead single from Mark's first solo album (Influences), this track didn't make an appearance on that release. The 'RAP' verse in the middle of the tune should be familar to fans who have heard any of Level 42's early performances of 'Turn It On'. That's all I know, and a Thunderthumbs album was never released. Mark probably got the name from the US duo, 'The Brothers Johnson'. This bass & guitar duo was known in the states as 'Thunderthumbs and Lightning Licks'. Alex, is the drum machine tune 'Lessons In Love'? I vaguely recall an interview where this was discussed. I heard Phil couldn't get a good drum sound, and i also heard that Mike & Mark finished the tune because Phil had left the band, only to return later. Gaz, i've never met another person who was into Ian Dury and Chaz Jankel. I have a great album by them. That is where I got turned on to the great Jamaican rhythm section, Sly & Robbie! I also love that tune Chaz Jankel did for the movie 'Real Genius'. It's called Number 1. Have you heard it. Pure eighties pop. Boon is a Les Paul man, no doubt. He has a couple of other strat type pointy headstock jobs, but usually a Les Paul. He bought Mark a black strat once. Al Holdsworth and Jakko are both Steinberger men. Al also plays those stupid Stepp Midi guitars (only about three sold ever), he also originated the tuning for the Chapman Stick with Emmett Chapman, if my history is correct. > Does anyone have any Interviews with Mike Lindup where he > discussed his equipment, and or playing techniques? From: Michael Payne Organization: Oklahoma State University Phys Plnt Date: Wed, 5 Feb 1997 16:59:21 -0600 Hey LEVELHEADS!!! I am going to lurk around the digest for a couple of weeks to a couple of months, as I have alot of personal work, as well as, many packages to get finished. I will still be available, via my e-mail address, but will remain really quiet for a couple of months. I think it is time to let, the "silent" readers get more of a foot in the digest, instead of the "tired old" Mikey42 comments everyday. I would like the digest posting from these lurkers to go up, as I think that they have quite alot to say, C'MON you know you want to speak up, SPEAK YOUR MIND!!! The past couple of months have been absolutely filled with chaos and I need some rest time to put some projects on track. Speaking of track, during this period I hope to finish my solo album, I have worked on this for nearly 3 1/2 years and it is at a very critical juncture, I MUST GET IT FINISHED!!! I will be attending LEVELFEST in VEGAS in June, hope to see alot of you guys/gals out there, if it is going to be like my NYC/Texas Level gatherings, it will be a "real hoot!" Q: So, I am passing the torch along to who? A: EVERYBODY who is reading this. I might occasionaly put an article from my archives in the post, mainly to see what the press did or did not do for LEVEL 42. Also, if I hear of any NEWSWORTHY issues from L42 members or management, I will pass it along to you, providing it is not some sort of rumour! (I hear you!) PACKAGES: If you have sent me a package and have not received it back, expect them to be shipped out by 2-15-97. I only have about 12 more to do, out of the MILLIONS that I received! Well, TA TA for now, keep the LEVEL spirit ALIVE and WELL while I am away! COMING THIS SUMMER: Mikey42 will conduct a LEVEL42 sweepstake, the winner will receive a copy of EVERYTHING VIDEO IN MY LEVEL 42 COLLECTION which is over 50 (FIFTY) HOURS worth of prime footage and an autographed full photo of the SATS members. I thought that was kind of cheesy (no offense). If anything I'd say to put Staring at the Sun instead or nothing at all. Regarding hats as I mentioned before to the lot of us who were corresponding, my boyfriend paid about 18.50 for his custom made hat at the Stratosphere and he told me he remembered there being a discount on a bulk order. We might call them for rates too. I think the name of the place was "Zap." Winston and others who care, Krys Mach was just kind of a creep to my mom, that's all. Maybe he was drunk, who knows. We'll see if you get the whole story in Vegas... Off topic: Does anyone know of a good chat page on the web where you can talk in a private room with someone? I'm so uninformed. I can only think of one exception off the top of my head -- I also found a 92-cent copy of the "SAY" Shep Pettibone/instrumental mix 12", which was worth maybe 2 cents, since it skips like mad. I prefer (actually 'PLAN TO MAKE') a 2CD set with 60mins extra bonus tracks from the Guaranteed Era (remixes, interviews, B-sides and so on) It should look like this: CD 1- first 74 minutes of the LD CD 2- remaining 16 minutes of the LD Guaranteed Wheel Spin Warrior Remix 7 (from 12") Guaranteed New Avengers Remix 6 (from CD5) Overtime Hen Pecked Horns Extended Remix 6 (from ltd.ed. Interview CD5) *At This Great Distance 4.5 (from CD5) *All She Wants 4.5 (from CD5) *As Years Go By 4.5 (from CD5) Fallen Angel (Demo) 6 (from Resurgence release of 'Changes') TT=74 minutes * I'll try to find some alternative for the ordinary CD5 releases already appearing on the AYGB Digest CD - suggestions!!!???? (but it needs to come preferably from the Guaranteed era) Polydor rarities stuff: pfff, I guess this is another 'vaporware' issue. I can't believe Polydor would release that... Dream on guys! I noticed that the CDV credits of certain L42 songs gives more info than found anywhere else. For example, It's Over Extended Remix is according to the CDV done by Dave 'O' Ogrin (from RITF remix & BWYA ADSC remixes). The Shep Pettibone Remix of SAY is in fact an edited version, editied by SP himself and some other guys (forgot there names) Strange... That's all for now!
