The rest of the tunes are even better. Oh, I forget to say what the connection is between Level 42 and Everything But The Girl! I'm sure everyone was holding their breath on that one :-) Well, it seems that Jerry Boys wa engineer on the EBTG 'Idlewild" album, and he did some work with Level 42, and on Mark King's solo album. Shuf, any idea where I can get a copy of 'A Certain Kind Of Freedom"? I haven't had ANY luck finding a copy. Emikatie, I know I don't see the same colors as everyone else...That would be because I'm color blind. :-( Randall, I believe that it was discussed quite a few months back that the girl in the 'Children Say' video is Mike's niece, not his daughter. I was reading today's post from LOZ, and he stated that if the Level 42 initial release does not do well, that Polydor "might not" be so inclined to re-release further albums. This got my mind working, THE WHOLE DIGEST, this means if you are reading this right now this includes YOU, should have a HUGE letter writing campaign to Polydor, asking them to release all these rare songs and mixes "whatever" on single disc (possibly a double disc set). Put all the tracks on these disc, instead of spacing them throughout an entire series. I think Polydor could capitalise better doing that. I ask that EVERYBODY reading this message send a letter stating that, one or two letters might not have an impact, but over 400 letters could swing the execs minds! LOZ or STEVE could you get us an address to send these letters? I think Rolf (the USPS E-Mail man) already did a survey of our favorite bands, but here's the top o' mine: => Thin Lizzy, Level 42 (no kidding!), Rush (except the new one - bleah! (me too)), Steely Dan, The Outfield, Daniel Amos, Gary Moore, + Ethel Merman. for all those with plenty of cash + want to print labels on all the CD's you're burning, check out www.fargo.com for $1200? [actually, I just checked + couldn't find it there...maybe they're somewhere else] Speaking of record 'fairs', I went to one this weekend. Needless to say, there was little L42 to be found. I did see a Hot Water/Dream Crazy 45" picture cover. Didn't buy it, but can find it if anyone wants it. $2.50. The only thing I did buy was a single called 'Living in a Box' with a dance edit on the flip side. There was someone on this list that asked me to look for it + I finally found it - I just can't remember who asked me. It was only $1. It is a nice song, but I don't know anything about the group. Any info would be appreciated. Shawn F - I live in Newton, MA. My Dad's from Canton, MA. Please send any questions to Bruce_Conrad @ BMUG.Org or BHConrad @ AOL.com p.s. The new LV t-shirts look nice. The Dan and the Police boxes were all digitally remastered tracks. I know one problem here is the sheer number of minutes we're talking, as well as keeping album "cohesion" (Citizen Steely Dan can be bad for that). But this is going to be jumble anyway you slice it, as Children Say is going to appear with the World Machine tracks as it stands now. Instead of doing a series of album releases (which, as we all know, will make this collection more expensive for us) I'd rather see like a 5 or 6 disc box set with a decent pictorial and bio or contribution from the members of the band (like Citizen Steely Dan). But as we all know, greed will drive this project for Polydor, as it has on this recent rash of discs where they stick on one or two previously-unavailable-on-CD tracks and fill the rest with the same stuff as before. I only wonder if such greed is going to come back and bite them hard. I think they're more likely to sell boxes than they are a whole set of single discs. By the way, does this mean that Polydor is planning to remaster Physical Presence? Might they add the three deleted tracks and take the disc out to a 2-CD set? Shuf ------------------------------ Subject: Negative news about L42 in the media From: "dirk.vael" Date: 4 Feb 97 17:50:52 to be different from all those articles mentioned in the Digest praising L42, I recall these notes: - once read a review of Mike Lindup's 'Changes', and it got a 1 out of 5. The author said that only the Spirit Is Free was so-so, the rest was utter crap ('Life will never be the same' was according to that guy an awful pseudo ballad). He also called Mike Lindup 'that guy with the high pitched voice who tried to go solo since L42 couldn't make any hits anymore'... - when 'My Father's Shoes' was released, radio folks over here said that 'My Father's Shoes' was a good song, the rest of the CD album were absolute throwaways - when L42 splitted, it was said that after too many flops, the group had enough of it - when Guaranteed was released, some said that Polydor wouldn't release it because it was so awful - Staring at the Sun was called 'a waste of vinyl' by some Belgian magazine (Humo) - the intro of 'Heaven In My Hands' was referred as 'an intro copied from a Rocky-alike movie - BTW, I saw the Guaranteed clip 3 times (once playback performance), the Overtime clip once (also playback performance) and never saw L42 after that ever again on Belgian TV :-/ To end with a happy note, why not start a new discussion topic: **misinterpreted or wrongly percepted lyrics!** The only thing you have to say is how you thought some lyrics went till you read them in the accompanying lyrics booklet ! My most humoristic example was with 'Lying Still': instead of the correct 'We talked through the night in whisper, as the silent city lay', I always thought something like 'We talked through the night in whisper, about the salad that she made' Huhhuhuhuhuh... this looks really stupid! Winston ------------------------------ Subject: LEVEL 42 "Forever Now, forever gone!" - ARTICLE From: Michael Payne Organization: Oklahoma State University Phys Plnt Date: Tue, 4 Feb 1997 15:38:37 -0600 FOREVER NOW, FOREVER GONE? by: Neil Barrow (taken from MUSIC-EXPRESS (NZ) October 3, 1994) British band LEVEL 42 have decided to call it quits after nearly 15 years. The announcement was made during the first night the UK tour promoting their current release FOREVER NOW. Lead singer and world renown bassist, Mark King, disclosed the announcement halfway throughout the Pourtsmith, England show. The crowd boo'd and hissed, most thought it was a joke, until King was quoted as saying "NOT!" after saying that this was, " not the last tour we're ever gonna do!" It sent shockwaves throughout the crowd, many in utter disbelief over the decision of the band. One such fan, Lisa Hammond (Olympia),said after the show, "I can't beleive it, I really can't beleive it, I mean this has come right out of the blue, I don't believe it really, there must be some sort of problem, as this band does not call it quits!" An official reason for the split has not been released, although rumours have circulated that RCA, Level 42's record label, has been very dissatisfied with the success of their last two offerings, Guaranteed and Forever Now. Rumours of internal problems have not yet been confirmed, although Level 42's manager Paul Crockford, said that the decison was King's idea after years of touring and album making, King was ready to jack it in for awhile and concentrate on personal/professional endeavours. Level 42 will continue to finish the UK tour, ending in London's Royal Albert Hall on October 14, 1994. No European dates have been confirmed and all shows after the London show have been canceled. Level 42 has had intermediate success worldwide. Three platinum albums, 5 years spent in the British album charts, close to a dozen Top 10 singles, leading the Prince's Trust Gala as houseband in 1989; this through three line-up changes, two record companies, record delays, and sadly the death of friend and fellow guitarist Alan Murphy (formerly of Go West and Kate Bush) in 1989. It is no doubt that the talents within Level 42 wil carry on into the future as solo artist, but the LEVEL of quality may be lost. (nb) ------------------------------ Subject: Burned "Guaranteed" Live From: CenChem @ aol.com Date: Tue, 4 Feb 1997 17:08:54 -0500 (EST) Hey all, Just wanted to let everyone know that I just got finished burning "Guaranteed Live" from laser disc onto compact disc. I didn't even know this could be done until I heard about a local company who can copy anything from LP's to LD's onto a compact disc. UNBELIEVEABLE! I took the rest of the day off today so I could ride around and listen to it in my car. The quality is fantastic. It sounds just like the laser disc. Just for the record, no one at this place knew of the band with the exception of one gentleman, and most showed little interest. But by the time LMN came on, I had a crowd standing around watching this concert. People kept saying "These guys are really good. Why haven't I heard of them?" You see, I actually had to stay and watch the concert ( what torture ) in order to "Mark" each track. When one song ended, they let me decide where I wanted the next track to start. All I heard the entire time was "WOW, look at that guy play the bass!" Mark King is a genius. That's all there is to it. Anyway..... Does anyone know if I can legally make copies for my level brothers and sisters without breaking any copyright laws? It cost me $ 26.50 to have done, and I am willing to make copies at my cost plus S/H for anyone who is interested if I am not breaking any rules. I am not looking to profit from this venture. Could someone please respond and let me know if this is against the law. A few notes; I had to eliminate one track off the laser disc due to space limitations on the compact disc ( I picked RITF ), plus I had to cut out some of the dead space ( applause, space between songs, etc. ) If anyone wants a copy and knows if I can do this legally, please e-mail me at Cenchem @ aol.com and I will tell you what the shipping costs are and where to send your money. I just want others to be able to take this awesome concert with them wherever they go. If for some reason I am not legally able to do this, at least now you know that there is a way to copy this or any concert onto compact disc. My goal is to expose L42 to as many people as possible. Thanks everyone for all the great information you've provided on the digest. Best damn thing I ever did was sign up. Take care everyone. MWVK ------------------------------ Subject: Getting closer to talking about Level 42 From: rcol @ ix.netcom.com (Randall L Collins) Date: Tue, 4 Feb 1997 18:01:25 -0600 (CST) After reading your last letter about LISTENING, I find myself doing a lot of the same thing you do when listening to a Level piece, or any other piece for that matter. I hear how certain keyboard notes or chords work with MK's playing. I also isolate a particular player and listen to just that. You're right. There is a lot going on with each member even though a piece might seem simple on the surface. A good example of this type of playing, as least what I can think of now, is on the Live At Wimbley 87 version of 'Chinese Way'. I like the way these guys play in unison between the verses and the choruses. Yes, I too like this song but I admit I only listen to the LIW 87 version. The way you listen is the way I listen too. Knowing you're an audiophile like me I know you listen for everything else like clarity, ambience, palpability, etc. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so discerning about how something sounds but I can't imagine doing it any other way. > I have to comment on a few of (Randall L Collins) points. > I've heard a few actually make it to his CD player. Yes, only a few CD's make it to my player. I mean have you tried flinging them across the room onto the CD platter? It's tough I tell ya but I'm getting better! :) I noticed in your list of favs, you included Haircut 100 and Kate Bush. I remember buying the first release by H100 back in the early 80's and I now want to find it on CD. I can't remember the name of it. And Kate Bush! Here's a real renaissance woman! I like a lot of her earlier stuff, especially 'The Kick Inside'. Something about her mousey voice, thought-provoking lyrics and mesmerizing, almost quirky music makes Kate the ORIGINAL alternative performer. Jerry writes: (about the tshirts and caps) > The first is the design on a white t-shirt, the next on black and > finally the design for the cap. > The proposed color of the cap is white with a blue bill, which should > compliment the logo nicely. I saw the webpage with these designs and I like them. I especially like the hat logo and yes, do make it white. The bill can be blue or black. If you get a lot of people who like black for a tshirt, then I think the hat should have a black bill. The tshirt? I'm not partial to any color but if you had chosen an album logo, then white would be best. (Are you considering other logos?). I'm not 100% sure that I will be at the Fest but I REALLY like to have a shirt and hat! That would RULE..heh-heh. Kudos to Jerry and Winston for their efforts here!!
