That was the tour for Standing in the Light, so I think I'm right. Incognito Live - I ran out and got it, and while I like it, many of the songs aren't drastically different than the studio versions. There is a killer new instrumental in the very beginning of the CD called She Rises in the East that is very fusionesque (I like that word), and Maysa and Chris Ballin sound great. They are an incredible live band, and their horn section and bass player are great in concert. I would buy this only if I were I big fan or a completist (of which I am both); a casual fan would be better off stocking up on the studio releases first. ------------------------------ Subject: The Artist From: "Randall Collins" Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 09:37:09 -0600 I just came back from a concert last night (Sunday) by The Artist Formerly Known As (hey, he'll always be Prince to me!). What a concert!! He had Graham Central Station as an opening act. I had no idea these folks were back together. It was a total treat seeing the REAL grandfather of slap bass, Larry Graham, on the stage. What was really wild was a bass solo he did in the style of Jimi Hendrix!! I've never seen anything like that! He played it with his teeth, stroked it, running up and down the stage with massive feedback coming from the speakers. He did everything short of setting his bass on fire! And of course he thumped and slapped his bass like a real pro! Even Mark King would've had to sit down and pay attention! Prince?...er, excuse me, The Artist? What can I say? He's not just a musician. He's a total entertainer! He also did a bass solo during the concert and while he's no Stanley Clarke, he did manage to do some very impressive melody playing! His bass player in the band was outstanding (Wanda Smith?). She really jammed. It sure is nice to see women play the bass really well. It's nice to hear what they have to say musically. Refreshing. If anyone has a chance to see The Artist in concert, do everything in your power to make sure that happens. There won't be a better show!! Right, then! I'm getting such a kick out of this, I can actually read it! I had three years of español in High School, and I figured I had pretty much forgotten it all. Amazing what stays in the old noggin for future retrieval! ---Rob: Here's what I have re. "World Machine" (and incidentally what I'm looking for...). I think he sang maybe two of their hits (Drive, and one other > that escapes me). Sorry, but that ugly mook Ocasek sang most of their hits. "Drive","Just What I Needed","Let's Go"....uh, guess you're right, Pat. I was thinkin' he also sang "My Best Friend's Girl", but that appears to be the mook. What is a "mook" anyway? Eastern Acoustics Works used to have the slogan "Mooks on Parade" to promote their speaker enclosures (I even have a couple)! New subject: I am a collector of cloissonne-style enamel pins, of the same sort as Hard Rock Cafe guitar pins, etc. (I'm sure some of you out there are, too), but I've not seen any discussion of this subject in the Digest archives. I know that some of you lucky people have Level 42 enamel pins, but I do not. Has there ever been any discussion of commissioning a "Level 42 Digest" pin? I am, at present, collecting info on possible manufacturers. As best as I can determine, at this stage, it would cost about $100-150(US) for the one-time tool & die charge, and then $2-3 for each pin (with a minimum run of 150-200 pins). If only one-fifth of the subscribership (100 or so of us) will cough up $6-8 (including postage) each, we could do this. Of course, these figures are rough estimates, but in the ballpark, I think. Thoughts, please! - Z. ------------------------------ Subject: AYGB From: "James, Daniel" Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 11:04:35 -0800 > I'm having trouble with rationalizing why simply noting the existence of > these discs is so bad. . . Mmmmm, I'm getting confused about this gig. Who told me that the Enschede (Dance Trax (=Dutch Radio Show) was a gig from the HIMH tour ? Lolita I doubt very much they performed 43 and Starchild on that tour (I'm sure they didn't at the gig of that tour I saw (Ahoy' Rotterdam), although I _HAD_ prayed for at least Starchild.....) Anyway there must be some confusion here. Maybe the concert you have on tape is the "Dronten" concert ? Lolita also wrote: > I think you should reserve judgement until you hear the solo stuff from > each person. Right on ! And I think Mark's Influences is a masterpiece.(Well at least side A is, side B is just incredibly good...;) ! ) I played it to my uncle the other day (who is in his 50's and an audiophile) and he was smashed when I told him who this guy was....;) ! Also played some early and late (FN) L42 stuff and he was amazed. Just another person who only knew L42 from LG and the RITF period..... Anyway drifting off......any "real" L42 fan should at least listen ones to any of the members solo albums, be it only to find out what was each members influence in the band. You can clearly hear the link between the L42 "Mike" songs and his solo stuff. Wayne wrote: > I haven't listened to Level Best in a few years due to the cut versions > of some songs. Regarding "Something About You", there is also a part in > the middle that is cut out on the LB album and video. To be honest: LB is the only album I do not own....;) ! I do have the video however, and sure enough many things are cut in the video's. "The chant" has a serious cut which ruins the song altogether. It's over is edited too. I'm sure there are more. LIAPW is also edited in it's video form, they even put that edit on vinyl (12") (Television version) ! Pat Flanagan wrote: > Once they get cleaned up, the copies don't even have to be burned to CDR. > Make a tape option for less $$$. I don't need EVERYTHING they've done > on CD ???? I think CD-R's are cheaper than a good tape these days Pat. at least here in Holland they are....... The CC system is of three decades ago ! It has too many flaws. Tape speed is never correct, too many different noise supression systems, inconvenient handling, long tracksearch time and of course the worst thing: Azimuth problems. Although I have some things on tape, I really very rarely use it. Quality just sucks... Something else: I saw Candy Dulfer and Maceo Parker mentioned couple of times on the digest. FYI, Candy is a big fan of Maceo. She told this in a TV interview, which I used to own. They showed some stuff from Maceo from the North Sea Jazz festival, and it was awesome ! Most notably the bass player, who's name I forgot. This guy was doing some amazing stuff ! Alas, I sent the tape to a digestmember many moons ago, and he promised me to send it back, but I am still waiting for it.........:( ! From: "Shannon" Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 18:56:39 -0800 First Night Fullerton, 1998 is happening! Thanks again to all who responded to my request for soundtrack input. I heard the track for the first time today. The winner for the opener is the first 1:26 (with some mixing) of Heaven in my Hands. I think it's a pretty great way to welcome the New Year - and set to fireworks too!! Pre-show is an hour of our own pre-recorded material. We have included a few more L42 tracks, a James Taylor Quartet number, some Ben Folds Five, and much, much more! That's all for the pre-recorded stuff - not to mention the live bands and other activities we have that night. It is definately a great night of fun for all. If you are in the So. Cal area on New Years Eve, give it a try. E-mail me if anyone wants any more info or ticket details! Thanks again - and happy holidays! From: J Shuford Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 22:52:28 -0800 (PST) I just received my P&P package in the mail today, and all I can say is UNBELIEVABLE!!! It was especially sweet for me because I also got a replacement copy of AYGB. I was without a copy since August 1996 and I never had the opportunity to listen to it on my stereo until today. The color copies are great, the artwork is too cool, and I can't believe what a fantastic job was done on remastering and mixing. I have most of the stuff on P&P on CD already, but it is such a treat to listen to all of this stuff brought to basically the same sonic quality. It's also terrific to hear the stuff from A Physical Presence--I think it sounds even better than APP on CD does. I just sat there and shook my head in amazement at 1) the performances by Our Boys and 2) how amazing it all sounded. Thanks to all who have been involved in these projects.
