Just thought I'd warn you off, Lolita; Randall said that WHSmiths in Cambridge was worth a visit. In my experience with UK record shops, WHSmiths has gone down the pan. Nowadays, they don't stock anything that's not in the charts. Don't make a trip, solely to visit WHSmiths! Cambridge, however, is a lovely city. Very old with lots of 'independant' type shops ie. it's not all high street chain stores. I dunno whether they have many 'independant' record shops, or where else does either but the city of Bath is also good for 'independant' type shops and is also very old (Roman spa town, this). There's a secondhand record store in Notting Hill, London which advertises a lot in the music press. Does anybody else have the address? I can look up the exact date of L42's Guaranteed gig in town&country (was mentioned on a fanclub note) I think it was March 10-12 1992 (or April 9 or something - not sure) 2. Who knows the name of the Wang Chung album that features 'Everybody have fun tonight'. I only have their 'To live & Die in LA' soundtrack, but I want more of these cool guys! 3. as the current situation remains, I won't make it to the Levelfest in Holland. 15 Feb is a deadline for a project and currently this means to me & my team more dead than line :-/ But you never know if we make it! I'll keep ya informed. (I am REALLY sorry DRe...) 4. Finally I received all my money from the goodies sale-out of September-October. Zaron was the last one and included a nice card aswell! Nobody seems to know the answer to my Trivia game (yet) !!!! The question was: Which L42 song can be related to "Good money drives out bad money" ??? 7. Prices in London for CDs are cheap compared with the mainland, but prob too expensive compared with the CD valhalla of the US... Here in Belgium $27 for a CD is regarded as normal, while the cheapest ones cost $22 (not the special priced ones) 8. I never heard that one, but a buddy of mine had a few 12" singles by them, and I am dying to hear some more of it. i just can't recall the name of the tune i fell in love with! Can anyone help me out? Brydman, sorry you don't dig 'The Chinese Way', but EWF didn't have anything to do with it. You are thinking of the SITL album, which was produced by 2 members in L.A., with the exception of 'Out Of Sight..", which is the BEST song from album. Wally produced it. Oh yeah, my CD's are organized by Genre: Fusion Gtr, Fusion Keys, Drummer, Sax, etc. I hate having to move everything over if I had them in alpha order. Byrdman, If you dig 'DC Talk" give me a ring, I did a bunch of tunes for a buddy of mine in Florida who is a rapper, on the gospel tip. We recorded quite a few tunes in my bedroom for his demo. We even had Lolita do backing vocals on one of the tunes, and it turned out to be the best of the bunch! That's all folks.. I had the good fortune to spend a large chunk of last Saturday in the company of Loz.For the record (and all those who doubt his good intentions) he is an absolute gem and all round "good egg" with genuine knowledge to match all he says on this digest. We spent an afternoon in search of L42 rarities and believe me he can spot those goodies from a distance. I may be teaching some people how to suck eggs now but I now know that there are many rare tunes to be found at record fairs which are held regularly up and down the UK(sorry USA fans). You UK fans probably have the mixes I've got! Does anybody have the lyrics to FOLLOW ME and ALL SHE WANTS? Now here is the article for the day: ______________________________________________________________________ MIKE LINDUP CHANGES HIS SONG By: Reg White "Taken from XS magz. (USA) Summer Edition 1990 Mike Lindup, keyboardist for jazz-funk band LEVEL 42, has gone solo for a bit and has just released an album called, CHANGES. We asked Mike what he liked and disliked on his new record: XS: Why have you decided to do a solo project, is LEVEL 42 getting boring? ML: No, not boring, just on sort of a "restbit" for awhile. We have been working quite alot in the past 9 years and decided to take a bit of a break, mainly to re-group and re-focus on some of our musical inspirations and Mark is trying to engineer a studio at his home on the Isle of Wight t record the next Level 42 album, which should happen within the year. I decided to do this solo project, mainly to get over a severe writing block that I have had since our last album Staring at the Sun. With Boon and Phil gone, the lyric writing has come down on the rest of us, Mark has adapted much more easily to it, than I, so I felt it was time to try to put pen to paper and write some lyrics. I had a difficult time trying to write about anything and everything, I tried to write lyrics about my birds, spiders, and a castle that I was looking at in Scotland, nothing seemed to work. About a couple weeks after that, I just happened to watch this programme on BBC2 about violence in Europe and the how people in Eastern Europe held on to a spritual context throughout the "cold war" , that gave me some ideas of lyrics, and the songs basically wrote themselves after that. XS: I noticed that the songs on the album denote a spritual context, was that a conscious decision? ML: No, not really, it was just how I felt at the time. I wanted to write about just some general topics, not something controversial. I also wanted to try to express an idea of world peace and tranquilty. The chant, at the start of the song Changes, sort of lends itself to a church choir, I actually sort of copied that from, "When the Knight, won his spurs.." and the expressions I got from the people that listened to it in the beginning was sort of, OK now what is this? But I felt, that it was a nice intro into the track. XS: Would you consider yourself a very religious person? ML: I wouldn't say "religious", rather maybe spritual. I have considered myself very spiritual guided, and I think that opens up your mind to many other ideas and "some sort of peaceful solitude"! I don't go to services every Sunday, but I do think that going is still very important, helps me stay grounded sometimes, especially when we're touring around. XS: What is your favourite, or least favourite on the album? ML: Well, I actually like them all. I can see where I could have maybe changed a few things, mainly musical, not lyrical. XS: Any examples? ML: Nah! Well, it is just a habit I have of always thinking a song is never complete. I am just a bit of a perfectionist at times. XS: I think the tracks that sort of stayed in my mind after a couple of hurried listens were The Spirit is Free and a track called Judgement Day, you impressions? ML: Well, The Spirit is Free was actually written back in 1989 for use on a Level 42 album. I played a demo version to Mark and Gary. Mark and I worked on it for a couple of weeks and realised, like most of the song we write seperately, was not usable in Level 42. That's not to say that they were bad songs, they just didn't fit into the mold or feel of the rest of the other tracks. Ah..what was the other song you'd mentioned? XS: Yes, Judgement Day. ML: Judgement Day was sort of inspired by a programme called Panorama. The topic on this programme dealt with Nelson Mandela and his fight for freedom in South Africa and how "we" in the UK dealt with the issue. I was very insightful really, quiet an eye-opener for me, as I am not really a student of history. XS: What are your plans after this album? ML: Well, I have to return to Level 42 in a couple of weeks for some pre-production of the "new" album which should, like I said, should be out by the start of next year. We have actually booked the Hammersmith Odeon in London for the entire month of December for an Annivesary Tour. I think we are playing 10 nights. Which we will hopefully have the new album out by then. XS: Do you have any plans to do another solo project after Level 42? ML: Well, getting the time to do it is very difficult. But only time will tell really, I am quite happy in Level 42. XS: Well, Mike thanks for chatting with us today and the best of luck on your solo album and tour late in the year! I would love to have heard acoustic version of a lot of songs. As for the photo on the Level Ads page, that looks great, where did that come from and where can I get a copy? Talking about the up and coming re-issue CD's. I am still very worried that they wont sell well and then Polydor will pull the plug on the rest of them. I'll just remind people that John Mawer (EMIKATIE) has a copy of the Connosieur Collection Remixes CD in his hot little hands ready for sale, and I can drive about 6 blocks and pick up a copy for you as well (only $11.99). Gotta have that ultragroovy mix of Tracie, people! Red Dwarf was mentioned yesterday. Without spoiling it for those of us who will be watching the series in a few months, how is the new series? A private reply to this request is just fine, thanks. Two groups I neglected to mention from my list of faves: Queen and Pearl Jam. I can't say as I've heard much of their stuff after Versus (the Sheep Album), but early Pearl Jam is about as good as it gets from a young band. It was hard to see where they could improve, and I'm not sure that they have. Anything else 42? I recently listened to Phil and Gary H's contributions to Certain Kind of Freedom again--nice stuff! It shows how multitalented the members of L42 are. It also makes you wonder how much of L42's ever-evolving sound was who's influence and what it would have sounded like had they not, as Mike Lindup and Mark King have suggested in the past, concentrated on making a "Level 42" album. shuf shuf @ darkwing.uoregon.edu ------------------------------ Subject: LISTENING From: EMIKATIE @ aol.com Date: Mon, 3 Feb 1997 15:58:07 -0500 (EST) Listeners: Now on to Level 42. Comments are often made about a particular song regarding some point about this or that. I sometimes can identify with the point the writer makes. Sometimes I say to myself, hmmm, let me play the disc and see if I can see what he/she means. Sometimes I hear very subtle musical sounds or parts of songs that were arranged in a way that I think is amazing. I wonder if it was written with that particular interpretation or sonic "phrasing" in mind. I wonder if anyone else hears and appreciates the way a certain passage was written and played. Sort of like colors. We all know what the color red is, but do we all see the same actual color? I was listening to the World Machine CD - UK version on Sunday and heard things I never heard before. I know the album very well and could probably hum or sing along to every song etc. It's the subtle "phrasing" I'm talking about. If you don't listen closely, you may not know it's there. That's why I never tire of any Level 42 song. I can honestly say I hear something new every time I listen to them. If it's not some sort of background synth swirl, its some punctured accent chords. Take the title track, World Machine. I just noticed the amazing guitar chord sounds Boon plays way up the neck starting at around the 4:15 mark and really noticable at around 4:30 and continuing to the fade-out ending. Listen to the synths in the beginning of It's Not the Same For Us, before the vocals. You might not even know they're there. On to Dream Crazy. The way they move from the first verse to the second verse is something I listen for every time. There are numerous ways to fill the space with sound between verses and I particularly like that part. (the sound leading into the verse "stand easy"). It doesn't move grossly to the next verse, it has very subtle sonic accents and quick-beats that I gobble up with each listening. There is so much damn music and sounds going on in every song, I can never get it all in at once. I sometimes pick out an instrument at the beginning of a song and follow it all the way to the end. It's like hearing new Level 42 material with each listen. Yes, I know I should put away the magnifying glass but this is how I LISTEN to music. OK. Now put on the WM disc and listen away. The machine stops. Pat graciously sent me the original .PCX images which I had planned on converting to PICTs. Unfortunatly, I have barely even turned on my Mac during the past year, so I've kind of dropped the ball on this. I was also unable to locate a decent screensaver engine that would provide what Pat's does (a particular ordering of the images along with a caption) and my Mac (toolbox) programming skills are severly limited, otherwise I'd write one myself. I assumed that most people have After Dark (or Darkside of the Mac) which provides a "Slide Show" module which would simply display the shots on your screen in a random/alphabetical order (or if you have After Dark 3.0, you could always use the "Artist" module to make really interesting looking shots). Keep in mind of course, that these images would look pretty poor on a Mac Plus (dithered 1-bit images I believe). You said you don't have web access (you might try grabbing a copy of MacWeb if you want to surf, it'll run on something small like a Mac Plus) but for others who want to download the images (I've posted this URL several times, but for those who haven't seen it before) the address is http://www.serv.net/~djames/Files/level_42.zip -- have fun, it's about 4.5Mb. > Alan Parsons Project - I just got their latest , ON AIR, that has a > CD-Rom along with it, anybody know what's on > it, gonna hafta find a computer with a CD-Rom > drive just to check it out. This isn't actually the Project, it's Alan Parsons solo work. My understanding is that the Project as we know it is dead. I think there were some disagreements about the time Freudiana came out between Alan and Eric Woolfson that caused the two to go separate ways. I may be wrong however (especially since the CD lists some of the APP regulars such as Stuart Elliot--but Eric Woolfson is missing from even the "Thank You's"). Anyway, I really like this CD, there are some beautiful pieces on it. As for the CD-Rom, I haven't gone very far into it, but it looks to me like it's just Quicktime Movie files with a few music videos (Particularly, the full-length video for Fall Free which as you can imagine, is a bunch of people parachute jumping). There is probably more but I just haven't taken the time to play with it (since my Macintosh is an old IIci and doesn't have the umph to play it, and my Girlfriend's Windoze 95 machine is, well don't even get me started about WinCrash...). So speaking of Videos, any update on the release of the next batch of Level 42 videos? I'd love to have good quality, HiFi-Stereo recordings of the post Level Best videos. ------------------------------ Subject: Favorite artists From: ldeivert @ law.uoregon.edu (Lisa Deivert) Date: Mon, 03 Feb 1997 16:40:05 -0900 Hello all, I subscribed to this digest several months ago and I have decided that it is about time to "delurk" and add my two cents worth regarding favorite artists. I first heard Level 42 back in the mid-eighties, when I was in high school. Of course, the song was "Something About You" and it is still one of my favorites. Most everyone on my list of favs have already been mentioned by others, but here they are in no particular order. Beatles Aretha Franklin New Order INXS ABBA Duran Duran Police (early stuff) Pretenders R.E.M. Elton John (early stuff) George Michael Blondie Pet Shop Boys ELO Stone Temple Pilots Collective Soul Okay, there they are. I have a question that is totally unrelated to Level 42, but this is as good a place as any to ask it. Does anyone out there remember a song entitled "Eidelweis" or "Don't Bring Me Eidelweis"? This song was played all the time on an "alternative" (I use this term loosely) radio station in San Francisco some years back, and I have never been able to obtain the single. Most people I have spoken to, have no idea what I am talking about, particularly here in Oregon. If you by any chance know what I am talking about, let me know. For those of you wondering, the last release I have of Falco's was from 1991 or 1992 called De Data Groove. It wasn't all that. I still have Falco 3 (Rock Me Amadeaus). It's great for parties cause no one's heard it in a long time. But my favorite of his is Emotional. You can sometimes find it in the $1 or less bin at the dollar store. That's where I got it. Yes, I must admit I own 4 falco casettes. And, last night I was listening to The Box (the "urban contemporary" or whatever you call it type station) and they played the extended mix of "Something About You" with the rap (although they talked over it). I never thought of Level 42 on the same station as Bone Thugz n Harmony. But now I know different. Yes, Byrdman, it's OK to be black and listen to Level 42. Peace Out. From: Johndrums @ aol.com Date: Mon, 3 Feb 1997 22:36:18 -0500 (EST) Hey everyone, It's been awhile and since my last post I changed my email address. It was Jwall6653 on previous posts and will from now on be Johndrums. Thought that might be easier for folks to remember. Joni Mitchell ( especially the stuff with Jaco) 3. The Beatles 4. Jellyfish 5. XTC 6. Rush (everything except the latest.. YUCK!!) 7. Toto 8. Gentle Giant 9. Adrian Belew 10. I already started working on my wife about going to Las Vegas so I will keep checking daily to see if there are any new developments.. (P.S. Emikatie: John, your check is on the way for the remix collection Thanx) Hang in there everyone, the Groundhog did not see it's shadow and Spring is around the corner..... I wanted to let those of you in the SoCal area know that Krys Mach is playing with his quartet in Glendale at Jax Bar & Grille this Thursday. I've been to see him there before and he signed the SATS CD my mom and I share and then with subsequent visits to the bar at later dates, moms discovered he was a bit evil. Long story. If anyone is interested in meeting him and hearing him play traditional jazz, he'll be there. Also, yes, I suffer from the L42ES!!! It's always the L import section I am sucked to, I always sing the countermelodies ("Americaaaaaaaaaaahh...must choose.), and I recently had a dream in which I was hired as their backup singer and I was rehearsing with Mike at Mark's house. I AM ANNIE MCCAIG!!!! See y'all later, Angel ------------------------------ Subject: VegasFest Caps and T-Shirts? From: "Rehn, Jerry W. ,,DMDCWEST" Date: Tue, 04 Feb 97 00:05:00 PST Hello one and all, With the help of Winston Walker, proposed designs for LevelFest Caps and T-Shirts are out on Winston's webpage for review and vote. During the creation of the last T-Shirt and AYGB CD, I wanted to try to get involved with the design of each. But being as busy as I was with work and other things, I let them slip by. I do graphic design as a hobby and have alot of fun doing these types of things especially when it comes to something I care about as much as Level 42. Well I'm still busy as hell, but I said that I would at least suggest something this time around. So the result is two hours of ideas and a pretty good feeling that I contributed this time around. Please note that these designs are very rough and the quality of the images (especially the t-shirt image) will be far superior when produced. Here is the URL to view the designs: http://members.aol.com/winman42/sunshrt1.htm The first is the design on a white t-shirt, the next on black and finally the design for the cap. The cap design is much more subdued simply because of the cost and limitations in terms of complexity both in color and design. The proposed color of the cap is white with a blue bill, which should compliment the logo nicely. Winston has talked with someone in N.Y. that can produce the caps at the rate of approximately $12.00 each as long as we have at least 50 paid orders. I will check locally for pricing on the t-shirts and will post the results later this week. If anyone else has any leads on good silkscreeners in your area, please contact either Winston or myself. We would like for those who are interested in buying either a cap, t-shirt or both to give us some feedback. For the caps, please send Winston an e-mail (Winman42 @ aol.com) stating your interest and how many you might want. For the t-shirts, contact me (rehnjw @ dmdcwest.fmp.osd.mil) regarding preference in t-shirt color When the price is determined for the shirts, then state how many you want. The greater number of votes for shirt color will determine the lot. That is unless a deal can be made with the eventual silkscreener to do both black and white. (WARNING, subliminal message follows: My preference is WHITE) I would probably venture a guess that we would stick with two sizes of t-shirt, probably large and x-large. But that is still in the air. We can only pursue these projects with serious intentions as long as there is commitment from those of you out there who really want them. So have a look, give us some feedback and we'll see you in Vegas!! Thanks again to Winston for putting up these graphics on his webpage. Gert Emmens ------------------------------ Subject: Mark King: The Chieftain From: J Shuford Date: Tue, 4 Feb 1997 01:22:15 -0800 (PST) I was just listening to Midge Ure's album The Gift, in particular the track The Chieftain (where Mark King absolutely rips it up on bass). I was just wondering--did anyone else who has this CD notice that the sound mix on The Chieftain just ain't right? It seems to distort greatly, no matter what I listen to it on. Also, on a less whining & complaining note, does anyone know if Midge Ure ever played The Chieftain live and, if so, did Mark King play that part with him? There are other bass players who are fast, but how many have the thundering sound Mark has to pull--and really that entire song--off? Anyway, I seem to remember seeing The Chieftain (Live) listed as a b-side on one of Midge's singles from The Gift. Any info would be appreciated... shuf shuf @ darkwing.uoregon.edu "Life: Pay attention, and you'll be rewarded at the end. From: JennCyn @ aol.com Date: Tue, 4 Feb 1997 04:29:20 -0500 (EST) A special note to anyone within range of Bellevue Square: Take Sykbridge 4 over to the parking garage and ride the elevator to the uppermost level. Once you get out, turn around and take a look at the sign. No, I didn't do it -- the person who did will remain safely anonymous -- but it looks beautiful. ;) re: favorite groups: What the heck, I'll throw in a few of mine. About the only way to begin classifying them is by how I have them shelved; my musical tastes are all over the place.... The A Cappella Shelf/Shelves/Shrine: This started with Rockapella, and now includes multiple groups and a CD collection that's threatening to take over the living room. The title pretty much says it all. Celtic: Started with Enya and Clannad, branched out, and now the ones that seem to get the most rotation time are Loreena McKennit, Ashley MacIssac, and Anuna. The Blame-It-On-The-Digest Collection: Level 42, Go West, Thomas Dolby, Nik Kershaw, and at this rate, it'll get even further out of hand in short order. :) Anything Goes (here I get lazy, and stop categorizing): Barenaked Ladies, Sarah McLachlan, Moxy Fruvous, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Dave Matthews Band, Bjork, Tori Amos, No Doubt, Enigma, Queen, Sting, etc, etc, etc. From Marcus: > P.S. New Kochanski in Red Dwarf - Never went much on Claire Grogan > but at least she had a personality and could act a LITTLE bit. This > is the first time a woman in PVC trousers hasn't turned me on. hunh. Well, Channel 9 is getting Series 7 sometime this spring, so I guess I'll see then what's up. (no comment on the trousers!) Right now, they're busy running previous seasons, one show a night four days a week... and they've got this commentator that introduces each show who is waaaaaaay too perky. Somehow a bubbly American introing Red Dwarf episodes really doesn't cut it. tcoy, -- Jenn
