Bill Miller ------------------------------ Subject: General things and a big Hello From: Philip Thomas Date: Fri, 5 Dec 1997 12:42:57 +0000 (GMT) Well hi there! I'm new to this so just a few of my thoughts to share with y'all. Firstly, my fave keys bit is the magnificently cheesy latiny solo on Wings of Love ... anyone else? And just to agree with what somebody said (sorry, can't be bothered to go back and find out who) I too am a big fan of True Believers. I'm not even going to think about delving into 'that' topic of conversation so changing the subject matter slightly, does anybody out there think that The Bends tune that was on the LIAPW single should have made it onto FN? I really love it. Here's a nice little story. I threw a bit of a party ealier this week with a few of my housemates and to give people a bit of relief from the dance tunes spinning in our lounge, I generously opened up my room and put on my fave l42 tunes and people just loved them. I've got a feeling if I'd said what I was going to play, they'd have gone "oh yeah..." and walked out right away. Guess what? I'm a bassist too and play in a band in Luton doing live Drum&Bass, ambient and Trip Hop stuff but it's L42 that keeps me sane most of the time. By the way, I've found Mark's bass lines work really well when we play in a chillout room at a club thing over congas, djembes, didges and accoustic guitars. Sorry if you think it's murdering them but it's true. I'm thinking of trying a kind of Trip Hoppy thing based on A Physical Presence. Anyway, thanks for reading this and hello to all you 'Funk-U-Likes' out there. Bye for now ---------------------- Philip Thomas pjt195 @ soton.ac.uk ------------------------------ Subject: Re:Lyric replacements From: Troels Dahl Date: Fri, 05 Dec 1997 14:01:02 +0100 Hi All! >OK, someone queried, "What other lyric replacements has Mark gotten away >with in the past?" (hint, hint) Hey Katie! Are you still with us? Thanks for returning the book. And the chocalte of course! I'm off for vacation in Florida all of next week, so I'll take the Bio with me, and re-read it. Haven't done so since it was printed. Also, a big TAHNK YOU to Bilal, you sent me the L42 'Master Series' CD, as well as the single by STRIKE, who sampled Mike's piano riff from 'Leaving Me Now'. Thanks so much. It was a very pleasant suprise after a day of hell at work. The STRIKE single was very interesting to hear. I'm not much on sampling, but it is a kick to hear Level 42 being used this way. I like the way they wrote the bass line around the piano riff. I am loving the 'Master Series' CD! I love the selection of tracks, and I wonder if they are remastered at all. Does anyone know? I ask because when I listened to 'It's Not The Same For Us' I really noticed somethings in the mix that are really buried on my World Machine CD. Makes we look forward to the Polydor remasters. Hey MikeJ, thanks for clearing up your intentions regarding your post. Sometime we get carried away, huh? But, i don't think that anyone is saying that Mark NEVER practiced, but that he has stated in interviews that he doesn't now. Of coursem like you say, Mark could have been pulling the TV and print media's legs when he said he doesn't practice. Then again, he could have been pulling yours, right? Our parents always said 'Do as I say, not as I do. Maybe Mark just wanted to steer you in the right direction. Dan, thanks for the CDDB info. Just got a new PC at work, so perhaps i can join in on the fun. As per Lolita' post, if we were to make a 10 track Mark King tape to send to Marcus Miller, what tracks would you pick, to show him Mark's ability on bass? Hey Zaphod, Mark King to Lorne Greene is too easy. Any self respecting level 42 fan knows that Mark King always fed the family dog ALPO dog food!!! (If you didn't know, actor Lorne Greene used to do ALPO dog food commercials) Well folks, later. See ya' back here on Dec 15th. I've been somewhat preoccupied over the past several weeks with things going on in my life. Going through a divorce is not fun, especially emotionally, so my advice to those couples out there..... MAKE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WORK!! OK, enough of that. I have been keeping up with the digest and there have been a lot of different threads going on and I will comment on a few of them, but first... Lolita, I'm sorry I didn't make a tape of the music I charted for you. I know you were wanting to hear some of the endings I wrote. I hope you were able to work with them. I would really like to know how this turned out for you. Please let me know if I can be more of a help to you. I'm feeling much better now so I can concentrate better. I seem to notice a lot of November birthdays amongst the digesters, so Happy Belated Birthdays to those folks. I mentioned this because my birthday was November 30th. I read with interest about Mark King's desire to play the drums rather than the bass. I never would have guessed that. As far as practicing is concerned I suppose it doesn't matter if he practiced or not, as jeff put it. I admit that I use to believe a musician who never practiced or learned his or her craft wasn't legitimate. You must sweat! You must toil! You must spend years honing your craft! You must have formal education! That has changed drastically over the years because of the sheer number of extremely talented people I have come across. Being a piano instructor, there are students who have to work hard and students who have a real "gift". Mark is gifted! I'm sure he's had to work hard as well. Which leads to Mikej's "colorful commentary". I don't have that particular digest in front of me now, but I think no one is saying you can't express your opinion. Please do! It's just that a comment like "taking up knitting" is more of a personal attack because Roberto said something you didn't agree with. And because you didn't like what he said, the digest is suddenly full of rubbish. OK, that's fine. That's your opinion. If you want to avoid backlash, be careful of how you come across. That's what everyone is reacting to, not so much what you said. I see now that you're starting to enjoy the digest according to your letter in Digest #338. Keep on enjoying it, my friend, just learn to disagree without being disagreeable. I was at my parent's house looking through my old albums and found "The Early Tapes" and a 12" extended version of "Living It Up'. I will probably offer these to the Digest public sometimes soon so if anyone is interested...... Also, earlier this year, I wrote out the piano solo Mike Lindup does on "Leaving Me Now" from LAW 87. Since there are a fair number of new members here, and if you play the piano, and would like a copy of this, let me know. Zap: I would like to get a copy of AYGB. I went to Eric's site to bring up that particular digest but there was a 'time-out' on the site, so I'll bring it up later. At the risk of sounding like a salesman, I would like to offer a Christmas tape I did some years ago to those digesters out there. It's just standard Christmas music that I've arranged in various styles and such. No charge for them. They're homemade tapes done on my digital piano. There were a few people that order it last year so......email me if interested in this or anything else I've offered here. Right, then! Randall rancol @ worldnet.att.net ------------------------------ Subject: Michael Hedges From: "Richard N. Herren" Date: Fri, 5 Dec 1997 14:41:50 -0500 Digest members who have an interest in classical/fingerstyle guitar will be saddened by the loss of Michael Hedges this week. For those of you unfamiliar with Michael, he more-or-less reinvented the genre of fingerstyle guitar, & played a fundamental role in the early success of the Windham Hill label. If you listen to National Public Radio, you have undoubtedly heard snippets of his work used as bumper music. Michael was unique, both as an individual & an instrumentalist. Although he wanted to be remembered for his compositions, his contributions to the instrument will easily outlive those memories. Michael died in a single-vehicle collision; he is survived by his two sons. More information, including the AP release & the address for donations to his children's trust fund, can be found at http://www.execpc.com/~stropes/htmlout/products/indmh.html. -Rich ------------------------------ Subject: Mark's Daughter, I'll be Annie.. From: angelina rogero Date: Fri, 5 Dec 1997 12:58:21 -0800 (PST) Hi kids, I know this is a few days old but I wanted to answer the question on Mark's daughter's name. One of his daughter's names is Joely, not Josephine (ick!). I find it funny that no one flamed the person who asked the question about Mark having kids seeing as how that would fall under the category of 'personal life' and it has nothing to do with the music of Level 42. Yet people got all in a huff when Mark's sexuality was brought up. It's so silly that some people posted just to say that it doesn't matter and we shouldn't talk about it. Well, if that's true, then why did they bring it up again? Just let it go people! If you don't care about it, just don't post about it! Talk about not having a life! BTW, if anyone wants to join Zak on the drums in a LA Level 42 cover band, then I'll volunteer for the Annie McCaig spot! Cheers, Angel ------------------------------ Subject: Practice vs. Perfect From: J Shuford Date: Fri, 5 Dec 1997 13:26:07 -0800 (PST) This debate about whether Mark King practices or not seems rather silly. Of course the man practices--he just doesn't practice all the time! We've all heard him mention how he can go for very long stretches without playing the bass, but when it's time to start working again he gets back in the studio and starts practicing again. This is a rather uneducated opinion, but my guess is that he practices not so much to knock out the cobwebs but rather to build up his hand and forearm strength again. For no matter how much he lifts weights, unless he practices (and builds up the callouses again) he won't have the hand, finger, and forearm strength he needs to put on the live shows. Whether you call it jamming, rehearsal, whatever--this still counts as practice. However, I suspect that he didn't in fact spend as much time practicing as some less talented people have done (Mark is blessed with a gift that translates across instruments), and the fact that he was playing for a few hours for 150-180 nights a year for Level 42's formative days means that Mark probably wasn't doing that much "practicing" and was doing more live "performing." Just some thoughts. I mean no flames in anyone's direction. Write the digest, write the fan club, write your senator if > you have to. Let's make this happen! Speaking as a US-based Levelhead who _never_ saw the band (they played in Lubbock once, in 1987, with Tina Turner. Being 14, my 'rents wouldn't let me go. . .) I wouldn't be offended by a decision to have the tour be UK-only. Why? Because touring is about two things, and two things only (OK, there are exceptions, but that's another case) 1) promotion of a record, and 2) making money. Since our boys were _never_ da bomb around here, why should they bother even attempting either goal on this side of the pond? It's a financial decision for Mark's tour to stay where his bread and butter are! Or, you can look at it this way. . . If you live stateside, and you go to see Mark's tour in the UK, you'll get in for free! Paul has stated that. Use this as an excuse to get your Yankee butt over to International Levelfest I! That's what I'll be doing. ;) Personally, I'd like to see a few dates in France, Belgium, or the Czech Republic! I'm always looking for a good excuse to get acquainted with the Levelheads of the world. PS- Jim, we _are_ the fanclub now. :( Zap'd
