OK, on the subject of favourite cd's, my favorite cd of all time is "Afternoons in Utopia" by Alphaville. Great music, great lyrics. Both music and lyrics seem to blend together and each of the 13 songs is connected to all the others in some way. Great album! Favorite song off that album: "Lassie Come Home" - I would chop off a finger or more to hear this unplugged with a full orchestra. > Michael jackson (OK, I'm guilty, I have to admid, I love the way this > man surprises me MUSICALLY everytime. I don't mind all the face-jobs and > the super-clips, I'm a musician...). I have to say, weird as he may be (but can you blame him, really?) he does make great music. Some of his videos are pretty nice too... And now for something completely different (I just downloaded the Monty Python desktop theme - how did you know?): Level 42! I was thinking of songs that would sound really cool if played by Level 42. Here's a selection: Radio Ga Ga [Queen] (with all new arrangements: way!) Club Tropicana [Wham!] (obvious) Down To Earth [Curiosity Killed The Cat] (with Phil on drums) Love To Be Loved {Peter Gabriel] (with vocals by Boon!) and, of course: Sweet Surrender [Ultravox] (yes yes, we already have Lessons in Love, but imagine that great piano solo and Mike...) Thinking of vocals by Boon, why didn't he ever do any vocals for Level 42? He doesn't sing all that great but he could have done something! Well, that's all for this session. I'm going out there in early March to speak to a national manufacturer's rep association, and I'll be staying at Sam's Town, which is 1) Cheap ($65 for Friday or Saturday nt, $40 for Sunday), 2) Off the strip (it's no big deal to take the shuttle, it goes all the time), and 3) they have a GREAT buffet. Only downside, they play country music all the time, but I won't be around the hotel THAT much. :D Anyway, the time of year you're going out to Vegas can have a BIG influence on the cost. From: Chip Davis Date: Sun, 02 Feb 97 11:50:01 PST Hi, I've been reading the digest for a few days to get a feel for it and now I'll introduce myself, My name is Chip I was introduced to L42 thru my friend Russ, who as it turns out only had a casual interest in the band. Mine turns out to be much more.. It was the World Machine Album, I have since gone out and gotten everything else I can on CD and Video, I LOVE Live at Wembly and Fait Accompli is interesting, but sad considering the loss of Alan Murphy... I (like alot of people) would like to see Boon, Phil, Mike & Mark get back together without all the extra personnel, record a great album, and the n have the record label actually PROMOTE the band which, at least in the states, seems to be where the labels are going back to. I Enjoy reading everyone's comments on the world's most underrated band.... Chip ------------------------------ Subject: MIDI MIDI MIDI -- I need MIDI Files! :) From: "Sean D. Green" Date: Sun, 02 Feb 1997 12:45:42 -0600 Hey All, Well, in the coming weeks, I plan on developing one of the largest Midi File Websites found on the Internet. I have built quite a surplus of files, and of course, a few Level 42 files. The reason I am posting this letter, is to acquire and build the largest site of Level 42 Midi Files on the net. So,"what's my point?", you may ask. The point is this: Anyone who could contribute any midi files which they currently have available, would be greatly appreciated. By doing so, I will be ever thankful. Also, if these are files which you have developed on your own, please let me know so I can give you credit in the description area. If anyone can offer me help in this area, simply e-mail me with the attached Midi file to: sdgreen @ flash.net Your efforts in this matter are of deep appreciation. Thanks!! Sean ------------------------------ Subject: European Levelfest, Favorites, Black Levelheads From: lolita @ interserv.com Date: Sun, 2 Feb 1997 15:43:00 -0800 Hey All: Some folks have replied to my European excursion e-mail. I will definitely get together individually with the folks that offered, but a true International Levelfest would be welcomed, by all means! We couldn't get it together when I was in London two years ago, but I'd like to give it a go now. My 1st weekend is in Amsterdam (May 24th-25th), the second one is in Berlin (May 30-June 1) and the third one is in London (June 6th-June 8th), so one of these three places would be ideal. Isle of Wight on June 7th would be perfect - it's a Saturday. All of you out there in Europe think about it and e-mail me if it sounds feasible. About record stores in London.... Someone suggested I go to HMV on Oxford St. Well, I've been there and they do have a great selection, but there's one problem: THE PRICES WILL KILL YOU!! We've had this debate on the digest in the past, but I must mention it again: CD prices in the UK are ridiculous! I live in New York City, which is expensive, but I've _never_ seen prices like that here except for imports and box sets. The Virgin Megastore, which is around the corner from the HMV in Soho (Soho in London, not NY :-)) has much better prices and almost the same selection if I recall correctly. Of course, I am willing to pay more for stuff that is out of print or not available in the US, but I have my limits. Byrdman - I first heard Level 42 on a black radio station in NY called WBLS in 1981 because Starchild got heavy rotation. I didn't realize it was Level 42 until 1985 when I purchased most of their back catalogue on cassette. Most black (excuse me, African American. Whatever.) people on the East Coast know Starchild, because whenever I hear it in a crowd with my friends someone invariably says 'isn't that the group you like?' I've also heard Love Games on some acid jazz bar tapes. I think most black listeners prefer the early stuff because it's more R&B/funk oriented. My favorite artists: Donald Fagan/Steely Dan, Joe Sample/The Crusaders, Incognito, Stevie Wonder, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Brand New Heavies, Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, Old Prince (The Artist Formerly Known As Talented), Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, David Sanborn, Al Jarreau, Old Bob James/Fourplay, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Old Chaka Khan/Rufus, Old Sting/The Police, Peter Gabriel, The Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, Bobby McFerrin, Lambert/Hendricks & Ross, Sade.... I have a lot more stuff, but that is a smattering of my collection. John (EMIKATIE) - Along those lines, my CD collection is sorted by genre. Here are my categories: Instrumental Jazz, Acid Jazz, Latin (small but growing - I'm getting into Brazilian music), Rap (even smaller - mostly Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul), Funk and R&B bands (Slave, Gap Band, EW&F), Alternative (Alanis, Dionne Ferris), Pop/Rock, Level 42 (lots of CDs), and Jazz/R&B/A Cappella vocals. I tend to own multiple CDs by the same artist [4 Sade, 7 Incognito, 18 Level 42 (so far)] so alpha isn't really necessary because I can tell exactly where each CD I want to find is going to be. Plus I am such a ridiculously anal person (to which Winston can attest) that I know exactly when one of my CDs is missing even if someone were to try to fool me. Anyway, more information than you wanted, but the answer to your question. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: LEVEL 2nd BEST From: ByrdLvl42 @ aol.com Date: Sun, 2 Feb 1997 19:05:07 -0500 (EST) Of late there have been posts regarding OTHER BANDS! Are their really any other bands besides LEVEL 42. I should think not. However, if I was ever held at phaser point by a rabid Romulan, I would state these as my second best choices: HARRY CONNICK, JR.- The man is a STUD! As comfortable on a piano stool playing New Orleans Jazz as he is in a cockpit shooting Nazis or Aliens. JACO PASTORIUS- If Mark King is a bass lord, Jaco is the bass god. I got two words for the unbeliever, "Teen Town" THOMAS DOLBY- Great musican, and lyricist. Snappy dresser, too. RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS- The most extreme I get these days. Flea ain't that bad. STING- O.k., o.k.. I know hes like the Anti-Mark, but he has a great jazzy sound, and immense lyrics. Singable. STEELY DAN- Fagan lives! GO WEST- Didn't Annie McCaig sing here? The only thing that diminishes this group is the fact that they came out the same year as "World Machine" in the states. They won Best New Act that year over L42. I don't think so. DC TALK- If you don't know, better ask someone who does... YAZ- Short lived, high powered pop, leading to ERASURE- Oh, tourtued to perfection. Not like that Nancy-boy Morrissey. "Hairdressers in Love" my ass. BOYZ TO MEN- Harmonious Funk (early) Pearl Jam/Stone Temple Pilots- And I do mean early.... EARTH, WIND, AND FIRE- Because before there was Brit-funk, there was Funk and I do mean... FUNKADELICS- 'Cause "We want the funk, gotta have that funk. We need need the funk. Give us the funk!" SWING OUT SISTER- Yeah, I said it... THE TIME- Morris is just so Cool.... Janet/Michael Jackson- Yeah, I said that one too. Mozart- The OG of Funk. Frank Sinatra at 30- The head rat of the "Rat Pack". Of course, he out lived most of them, so I guess he wins by default. Still, theres something to be said about Big Band lounge Jazz (see Harry Connick, Jr.) Honable mention- John Lee Hooker, Saado Wantabe, New Edition, Tori Amos (yummy), Scritti Politti, SPANDEAU BALLET (my Pre-42 obsession), Andre Crouch, Kenny Loggins, Sade (she can come by anytime), Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton, and a host of others... NEVER TO BE PLAYED ON MY CD PLAYER (under pain of death!)- Anything by "The Jets" or "The Macarena"- These are two forbidden dances that have brought human evolution back two steps, just behind cheese whiz and ATM machines Vanilla Ice (I did that once. Never did get all the cheese out my player...) R.E.M.- Banned for life ANYTHING FROM SWEDEN- Sorry. ABBA and Ace of Base shall never play here. COUNTRY MUSIC- except for Johnny Cash, Clint Black, Hank Williams, Jr., Dolly Parton, and Reba McEntyre (These peope all have paid their dues) WHITNEY HOUSTON- Its not that I don't want to play her songs, its just I have a hard time getting her BIG HEAD though the doorway. COOLLIO- same problem with the head thing... TECHNO/INDUSTRIAL/ACID JAZZ- What?!? Make up you mind what you're calling yourself these days, then get back to me ALTERNATIVE- Whose? Tell me that, I might listen... THREE TENORS- Great at first, cute second time, three fat guys barking everytime since... JOHN TESH- A P.B.S. fund raising ploy gone wrong. Even the natural accostical magic of Red Rocks, both times, can't help this crap. Take some advice: Go back to chiropractors school, or the very least Entertainment Tonight, and shut your granola-eating hole. And while I'm at it take Yanni with you... MICHAEL BOLTON- "Said I dug ya, but I lied. Bought your album, but I nearly died..." Stop singing great R&B hits and take your receeding hairline, and Fabio, and go somewhere. GANSTA RAP- Went through that phase in college (while jammin' my SATS tape, I might mention) with Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Ice T, and Third Bass. Then I grew up. FRANK SINATRA AT 60- The same things that made him smooth in the '60s make him a bitter old fart now. (And if anyone out reading this happens to be "connected", what I meant to say is Frank is a prince, and a man among men! Long live Frank!) Yet another rant from Byrdman... Are they arranged by type of music? Random? My CD's are arranged randomly. Some are in my bedroom. Some are in my music room. Some are in the living room. Some are in my bathroom. You get the point. > And besides, what does a favorite artist mean? You like the music? > You like the band? You listen to the CD's often? You want others to > form an opinion of you by the artists whose names you drop? To me, favorite artist means I like the band/person and their music, even though I don't necessarily like EVERY song. I try to listen to their music when I can but I try to give most of my CD's a listen from time to time. There are groups that I'm not particularly keen about but maybe they had a killer CD that I adore and treasure above all. What I listen to mostly depends on my mood. The song that I have played at least 3 to 4 times a week for about 2 years is 'You Do Me' by Ryuchi Sakamoto off of the 'Beauty' CD. This is, to me, the funkiest, dance-oriented piece I have heard so far, even though Ryuchi is technically a new age artist. Has anyone ever heard of him? As far as what people think of me because of my music --- it doesn't matter. I don't care what people like musically. I have broadened my interest because of other people's interest and that is certainly happening here since I joined the digest. Ronn writes: > How can you list favorite bands without mentioning Menudo or Los Del > Rio (The Macarena Guys). A classical music lover? YES! My favorite recording by Sir M. is hs recording of Beethoven's 12 Minuets and 12 German Dances (recorded in the early 80's?). I'm trying to find this on CD. I believe someone mentioned that Beethoven (ol' Ludwig Van) is one of his favorite artist but I accidently erased most of the digest while typing this so I lost the name. Whoever you are, I no longer feel alone. Anyway, I promise to have more L42 questions. In a way, I'm glad that we can go off of our favorite topic to make other discoveries about the interest of the digesters. This is cool. I have an idea: How about doing something like 'Jeopardy' on the digest? We could all do answers about L42 or anything related to them (or not). For our non U.S. resident digesters who aren't familiar with the game of 'Jeopardy', it's a very long running game show here where the host, our own game show legend Alex Trabek, gives you the answer to a question based on a catagory you choose and you have to give the question to that answer. It's pretty fun playing along with them. I hope this doesn't sound corny but...well, just though I'd throw out an idea.
