Julian Arnold Homo superior EMIKATIE ------------------------------ Subject: Mike & S2S From: "dirk.vael" Date: 25 Nov 97 13:32:52 Well, my guess is Mike is gay (everybody who's not a L42 connoisseur kept telling me that - guess why; and the fact he has no girlfriend for so long now makes the gossiping only stronger), but that won't change my appreciation for him. He a very talented guy, very nice one according of how you see him in Fait Accompli or interviews). I hope you all digesters think the same about. Even if MK turned out to be gay (imagine!), I'd still spin his discs as much as before. (and no, i'm NOT gay ;-) BTW, excellent album I bought last weekend is Soul II Soul's latest disc 'Time For Change'... With influences of Drum'n bass, cool funky & vocal tracks. Really a perfect gift ;-) Dirk ------------------------------ Subject: A Question About Mike From: Will Greer Organization: Empower Solutions Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 06:28:22 -0700 > 've never seen any mention of this topic, but I thought I would ask. > What would be Mike's sexual preference? I tend to think he's homosexual. > Right? Wrong? We covered this a number of months ago, and frankly some of the replies to that question were a bit dark last time. I'll bet there will be some dark ones today, too. Anyway, it became a bit of a flame war, and I'm not sure we ever got a real answer. You may try using the search engine (directions at the bottom of the digest) to check it out. By the way, my response to the (probably) eight or ten "I'm offended" messages that are likely on this digest issue is that no, of course it doesn't matter. No, it has no bearing on the quality of Mike's music. No, it really isn't anyone's business but his. But Brad's just curious to know, that's all. Right Brad? -Will ------------------------------------------ Will Greer Empower Solutions LLC Denver, Colorado (303) 888-7154 Will_Greer @ empowersolutions.com http://www.empowersolutions.com ------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Subject: The question about Mike From: Dave Mock Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 06:02:50 -0800 (PST) Hey, Micro-Kids: Regards the question in the Tuesday Digest about Mike's sexual preference: In the year that I've been a Digester, I haven't seen the question either, and there's a good reason: It's none of our bloody business. I know we talk about everything under the sun on this page, including Chapman Sticks and Wang-King, not to mention our own romantic travails (let me tell you about MY girlfriend), but this is one area that doesn't belong here. If Mike Lindup has not chosen to make it an issue, then neither should we. As a professional journalist for 14 years, I may be of a minority in my field when I say that people's bedroom habits have no business being bandied about in public when it has nothing to do with the public or the person's professional conduct. Marv Albert, for example, was different because his personal conduct became a court case in a public court, and his fame amplified it even more. Just as some of us tell our fellow Digesters to leave Mark alone whenever they plan a visit near his home, let's leave Mike -- a quiet, very private man and a single man who's never taken his sex life to the tabs -- out of our intimate speculation on this page. I'm sure we would ask the same if we were in his position. Sorry to go flamers, but I respect Mike and the other members of L42 as people as well as performers. From: VMARCHAN @ svherc.ucd.ie Organization: University College Dublin Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 14:07:43 +0000 (GMT) Every so often, someone comes up with the question "Is Mike gay?". The last time I saw this question it was followed with a load of answers along the lines of how could you ask that and it doesn't matter anyway. Nobody actually had the guts to answer. The answer is YES. If he had ever tried to keep this a secret I could understand peoples reluctance to answer but seeings as he was in the London gay and lesbian parade singing "Glad to be gay" in the eighties I hardly think it's one big secret. Sorry if that is a little harsh Brad but I got so annoyed with the last set of replies I saw that I wanted to tell you straight. Vicki ------------------------------ Subject: Mike's orientation From: Lolitaj Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 12:04:28 EST I have always thought that Mike was gay, but a)it isn't really anyone's business either way, b)it doesn't matter, because I still think he's gorgeous and c)I am always shouted down by Winston and others. He is apparently a sensitive, yet straight man who is dating a dancer or something. My best friend and I (who are both way into the band) always differed on this point, because she loved Mark and I loved Mike (except the afro and daishiki period). ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Michael H From: Violatiana @ aol.com Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 13:24:34 -0500 (EST) I'm trying to deal with Michael's apparent suicide and it's really hard since I did know him. I was on his guest list and was going to Australia to see them. I'm not going now and I feel that 2 weeks ago when I saw him here in NY maybe there might have been something I missed....... But I know in my head that's not true but my heart.... well that's another matter. He was such a vibrant guy. I could understand his aura that other women lapped up.... To me his was just Michael the egomaniac with a wicked sense of humour......Michael a good friend of the slime sisters and Mike the lead singer of a band of friends. Michael his was an acquaitance of mine. I did not know him as intimately as I've known Jon and Tim (nearly 15 years, 1982) but I knew him enough to call him, get serious with him, have some pretty deep philosophical discussions over some champagne, and well enough to give and receive a hug and kiss in return. Mike I'll really miss you. When someone you know dies, a piece of you dies along with them. When it's claimed to be suicide you wonder if there were signs, if there could have been something you could have done, to prevent it. I spoke to him a few weeks ago when he was here in NY and he seemed upbeat and happy. I don't know what happened and to be honest I don't know we'll ever know....... unless he's left a note otherwise who can tell what's going on in someone else's head. I had a poem that was given to me when my sister died and I want to share it with you. WHEN I MUST LEAVE YOU When I must leave you for a little while, Please do not grieve and shed wild tears And hug your sorrow through the years, But start out bravely with a gallant smile; And for my sake and in my name Live on and do all things the same, Feed not your loneliness on empty days, But fill each waking hour in useful ways, Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near; And never, never be afraid to die, For I am waiting for you in the sky! That said, however, I've read in a couple of places about Mike's "taste for the ladies". I believe it's mentioned in the biography. Z. ------------------------------ Subject: Cover bands!!!HA HA HA watt a mess... From: "RIZVAN MALIK" Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 11:42:07 PST I have been a Level 42 fan for over two years. Fair enough I haven't been to any of their performances, but after hearing and getting addicted to many of their albums I have come to the conclusion that they are one of the very few artists who have a good sense of musicianship (MMMMmmmmmm if there is such a word). Over the period of listening to L42 I have heard some bands (if thats what you call them these days) who have TRIED to sample some of L42s pieces and incorporate it into thier own track. I do not, however, remember the names of these tracks the only thing that I do remember is that it did not sound to appealing. Please try and find out the name of this track by the Doors that is supposed to sound like a L42 track. It will be quite interesting to hear it. Also let me know whether you have experienced any other samples of L42 tracks. I myself am a great fan of the band Yes and Pink floyd, and have often tried to compare the techniques and musical styles involved in the tracks. It would be very interesting to hear bands who have sampled L42 pieces and know what other L42 fans think and feel about this. Being a guitarist myself I have often thought what the ideal band would be. So far I have come up with M.K on bass, Steve Howe and Clapton on Guitar and Freddie mercury(if thats how you spell it) on vocals, and a very good jazz drummer! What style of music do people think that this would create? A lot of peolple may think that I am in my own world but can someone out there, who is on the same level, answer any of my questions........ ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V97 #328 From: "LOZ Green" Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 21:43:43 -0000 Greetings. As for Mike being homosexual? Answer...NO. Most definitly not, he has said in the past that of all the temptations brought on by his fame and fortune the one he found hardest to ignore was women. Too Bad about the Influences CD bruce. But if anyone can get hold of the US version I'd Still love a copy. From: Steve Whiting Date: Wed, 26 Nov 1997 00:43:33 +0000 Firstly, congratulations to everyone for keeping this forum an interesting one; ie not descending into "I really love Mike's hair on the Love Games 12 inch, I'm gonna get mine cut just like it on Saturday morning!" P&P's the best idea I've seen in ages, it's on my Christmas list! This'll be my first submission, and in line with the welcome note...My first 42 encounter was in my third year of high school outside Mr Fitzgerald's physics lab. Dave Wooster (you out there boy?) had recently invested in Physical Presence and was touting it on his Walkman, my turn to put the waxy earphone in came around during the unleashing of Hot Water, I've been hooked ever since! Sounds boring and similar to "Where were you when Kennedy was shot", but as baptisms of funk go, 'taint a bad one! Anyone share my love of the instrumental version of Coup D'etat? Anyone know where I can get this version on CD? Anyone share my dislike for The Ape? (Oooh, blasphemy!) Anyone share my view that Play Me kicks ass and was left in it's rightful place; ie a 'low profile' CD single for consumption by us alone? Apart from, what may be perceived as, my disrespectful opinion re: The Ape, I really love L42, I feel honoured that I was able to say "thank you and ta ta" at the Albert Hall and feel sorry for the poor bugger that was thrown off the stage at the end (who & where are you?) Forever Now is, in my opinion, the most skilled, restrained and complete piece of work I own. Philip Gould, respect! Two obvious tip offs :-) I was wondering when preferences would be discussed on the digest. I would venture that a few of the members of this digest could be gay, not that there's anything wrong with it!!! The machine stops. John
