Phew!! I thought I was the only jokester in the digest. Which brings me to my next point. I was wondering how digesters file their CD's. Do you just have them in alphabetical order? Are they arranged by type of music? Random? I personally have my imports listed alphabetically and seperate from my domestics. As my list of favorite artists was from the top of my head, I know I left off some other favorites which others have mentioned in their lists. And besides, what does a favorite artist mean? You like the music? You like the band? You listen to the CD's often? You want others to form an opinion of you by the artists whose names you drop? I have a few killer CD's that I absolutely would not part with and love to death. In some cases, it is the only one I have by that artist. They have done no other CD's that I am aware of. Forget trying to get vinyl by them. One such CD is by ACT. Anyone heard of them? How about Images In Vogue? (All you Canadian on the list know who they are. BTW - I saw the lead singer at the Metro Toronto Zoo once. My point is a favorite artist list is great but if there is an album of CD that rocks but the other albums by the group suck, then you may not list them. If you're still reading, I propose a new kind of list. How about those one or two CD's you have that you really love. The more obscure, the better. If there was only one CD by them, great!!! List your favorite CD by artist and title. We may see more than Tears For Fears, Simply Red, RTF etc. (I really like these three) Check out your collection and brush the dust off those CD's and you'll see that you in fact have such CD's. We would call it Favorite CD's. The machine stops. John ------------------------------ Subject: Falco + Paul H. From: Jason Bell Date: Sat, 01 Feb 1997 12:14:29 -0800 Randall > P.S. Well, maybe not, but he certainly LOOKS old! ;-) > I think Love Games was Nr. 1 here wasn't it ? > And I also seem to recall that SAY was no hit at all....... Actually, I'm pretty sure it wasn't. You see, when I was in high school I had a friend who collected all the Top 40 papers. This was before they screwed it up and made Rabo top 40 and Mega top 100 etc... Anyway, I remember thinking that Lessons in Love was a no. 1 hit but he was convinced it wasn't. We looked it up and he was right, in fact I remember checking for any no. 1 hit in the Netherlands, and not finding one! :--------( Yes, a 2 meter sessie would be pretty cool. So come on Mark, release that album, get your thumb out of your *ss and GET TO WORK!!! ;-) > Also, I am a huge 80's type person, so anything during that period is > GRAND, except for "Come On Eilleen", YUCK! That stupid synth banjo at > the start sounds like a techno-hoe-down! I hear you! I also think that tune sucks more than anything that has ever sucked before (where have I heard that phrase before?) and I cannot understand why everybody likes it so much. I mean, if you want to play a one-hit-wonder, why not play "(Feels Like) Heaven" by Fiction Factory, that is at least a decent tune. > I remember that I liked FALCO and A-HA in my mid-teens...where have > they gone? I think Falco is still out there, but only doing stuff in German now, and not very commercially interesting for big record labels. A-ha, well, they have all gone solo. And the last thing I read on the A-ha Digest (which I hardly ever read because it's such a mess) was that they're planning to release one last album this year and then call it quits. This should be a pretty good year: new INXS material, new A-ha material, new Boon material, new Mark King material, new Alphaville material!! > .........how about Guaranteed > Live? It is high quality to begin with.It would sound excellent on CD! Isn't Dirkies working on that? > Sting (back when he was fab), This makes me think of a tv special I saw about the making of his (latest?) album 'Mercury Falling'. Dominic Miller also played on that album and when the album was finished they had a celebration dinner and I remember Dom saying, "Sting, of all the bass players I know... um... well, you're one of them!" I still wonder what he originally had in mind. > & Midge Ure. Ah! Good! How do you like his latest (Breathe)? I think 'Guns And Arrows' is a damn good song and should be released as a single with a lot of airplay. Did you know that Midge did an unplugged tour last year? Sadly I discovered this when the tour was already over... :( OK, one last thing about Talk Talk, today I saw a new cd called 'The Very Best Of Talk Talk - remastered'. It has 2 b-sides on it, one being 'John Cope', the other one I can't remember right now. The rest of the tracks are all singles from the first 4 albums, not "Laughing Stock". Date: Sat, 01 Feb 1997 15:55:37 +0100 Just went through my record (yes, those old fashioned things!) collection, to find my copy of the 12" of It's Over. I knew it was on there: Physical Presence live. Well, I hope this clears up the confusion: Physical Presence (live) Recorded live at Wembley Arena december '86. (Isn't that the same time the LAW-video was shot?) And as far as I know, no one of the versions I have of that live-track (on 12", on cd-video and on a weird compilation) seems to have the drop-out "Friesen, Alex" talks about. Alex, close your zipper, it's winter you nut! :-)) Well, just for the record, here are my favorite artists: - Level 42 (no competition) - David Sanborn (for starters he is the best sax-teacher I've had, and secondly: he has Marcus Miller on bass...) - Robert Cray (seems a strange choice, I just really love the Bad Influence album. When I'm in the mood, that's a really laid-back album) - Beatles (All those brit-pop bands should stop copying what can't be copied!), especially Paul McCartney. Overall I can say I'm a real fan of melodies. I write music myself, and I always seem to start with the "hook" of the song (that word again!!). When somethings sticks to my mind for over a week without having it penned down to paper, I know it's a strong hook, and I make a song around it. I think that's the reason I put the Beatles & McCartney on my list: that guy can make a hit out of "The lives and times of a tea-cup". :-) So next to the mentioned groups I'm a big 80-s music fan. Just some names: Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, Go West, Spandau Ballet, Simply red, The Police, Nik Kershaw, Kool & The Gang (I'm serious) Eurythmics, Mr. Mister, George Michael, Wham! (Just do it!), Michael jackson (OK, I'm guilty, I have to admid, I love the way this man surprises me MUSICALLY everytime. I don't mind all the face-jobs and the super-clips, I'm a musician...). The Partridge Family and Brady Bunch Kids had good albums also (Johnny Bravo was the best Solo act.). Here is a list of my Fav bands: (not in order) Elvis Costello Ben Folds Five Flathead (Tempe, Az local band) Spinning Jenny (local) The Reverend Horton Heat The Refreshments(local for me) The Gin Blossoms(local for me) Joe Jackson Adam Ant Matthew Sweet Toad the Wet Sprocket Madness Squeeze and finally the best name of my favorites: The Dead Milkmen As you can see my music taste varies. With any luck... sigh. I had some questions that I kept forgetting to ask...in the last few digests I've read (remember early Oct.) people talk about sound samples. Well, now, I'd love to get some Level 42 sound samples for my home computer. Now, before some smartie pants says 'just surf the net, dude', I'll tell you that at home I have a lowly Mac Plus...so no nifty WWW graphics for this poor slob. However, I do have internet access at home, too, and if someone could point me at either an FTP site or send email to my home account, thebigdp @ best.com with the some small sound samples that would be nifty. I use Kaboom! as my sound package and love it. I have a huge array of sounds, and use 20 random sounds for startup, shutdown, and other tasks. My sweetie thinks I have too much time on my hands, what does she know! I remember reading that someone out there has a Mac version of the Level 42 screensaver, I want to say Pat but I think that hs is the original creator of the windoze version. So, if whoever (Winston or Zak maybe?) it was could email me and let me know how to obtain the screesaver I'd be really grateful. I cheated a little and looked at some of the titles of what y'all are currently talking about...looks like we're discussing favorite artists and groups, again. Here are some of mine that roll off the top of my head: (In no particular order): The Andrews Sisters - As a 19 year old kid, back in 78, I bought 2 record set of their music and then tracked down another one that had stuff I didn't already have. At one point I could sing most of the lyrics to their songs. Some day I'll have to hook up my record player to play some of my records. Level 42 - Duh James Taylor Spyro Gyra Either Brecker Brother Eliane Elias (I'll bet I spelled that wrong Diane Schuur - I saw her in concert and she was a killer! Pablo Cruise - I see they've got CDs but haven't bought one yet. The Doobies ABBA - I saw the ABBA movie on VH-1 recently and frightened my sweetie by knowing the lyrics to practically all the songs they sang. In fact, the very first live concert I ever went to was to them at the Budokan (?) while in the USAF. It was great! Chicago - The old stuff Donna Summer The Orb - I have UFO which I think is great, but have heard other of their stuff, I'd hafta be in the right mood for it. Debbie Gibson - I know, pathetic, but I didn't much like her last CD. Earth, Wind, & Fire The Dirty Dozen Brass Band - God, these Guys are great. The Rippingtons Russ Freeman, Sr - Russ's dad, died in the '50s. My dad a big jazz buff told me all about him, I'd love to get more of his stuff. Henry Chapin Jimmy Buffet - I'll admit it, I'm a clost Parrot Head, I really wanna him in concert some day. Basia Apollo 100 Space - Bet nobody ever heard of 'em, your basic electronic disco with absolutely awesome album covers. The Nolans - Hey British pop fans, does this make you have nightmares? I found these women while in Japan and loved 'em. I have a BUNCH of vinyl of these women and *gasp* a CD, I nearly fainted when I walked into a local shop a year or so ago and saw those sweet smiling facing staring out at me from a CD jewel box! I know, I am a sick individual. Bela Fleck The Beatles Stevie Ray Vaughn Glenn Miller BB King - What else does one need to say! Alan Parsons Project - I just got their latest , ON AIR, that has a CD-Rom along with it, anybody know what's on it, gonna hafta find a computer with a CD-Rom drive just to check it out. And more, much more....now that I've blown my cover as a totally cool guy (yeah right) I'll probably never hear from any of you again (sigh). That's it for now....sorry for the length (again). Doug P.S. Hey Bill, how are the Cover Tapes 1 and 2 doing? ------------------------------ Subject: Return of the Denver Dead From: ByrdLvl42 @ aol.com Date: Sat, 1 Feb 1997 21:58:00 -0500 (EST) Here are a few tidbits after having read the last few digests, and watching the Star Wars Special Edition.... Star Wars: Great Mos Eisley scenes, and the new Death Star Battle was the best. It reminded me of when I was 7 and I first saw Star Wars. All and all a good $7.00 worth of nenostalgia. But Solo's scene with Jabba made the Hut look like a wuss. This was the greatest gangster in the galaxy and he's letting Solo tickle him. Come on! I found myself huming "Sandstorm" during the new shots of Tatooine. Strange... Its great to take a new look at MY FIRST obsession, not unlike when I got my copy of LAW CD and first heard SAY Live. Its kinda like when you feel... The Level 42 Effect: Now that I have read the full post (and subsequent posts) about this phenomena, it had occured to me that this "Level 42 Effect" is in fact the fabled "Physical Presence" Physical Presence (n.): 1. The sensation you experience when the musicans on the CD seem to leap off the recording and take on a virtual existance in your listening area. At this point there is a personal interaction between the fan and the artists, thus "A Physical Presence". (This is the reason, I feel that their first live album was named as such, this is the fan's opporutnity to experience, at least virtually, how a live concert with "42" might actually feel via "Physical Presence") 2. The sensation also covers the effect when the fan first connects with a particular song or album by the artists. This occurs when the lyrics or melody is embedded into the mind and a connection is made between the fan and the music, perhaps through past experiences with related subject matter. In any event, this connection produces a empathic link which stimulates the "Physical Presence" (exerpted from the Webster's Fanaticists and Freaks Dictionary) Joe Blow on Joe P.: Lets explore the Joe P. fiasco. It never was a matter of censorship, or digest content, or (sorry to say) racism. Joe P. got booted off because by no ways or means did he represent or respect the Level 42 digest community. His views were adversarial, sure, and he has the American right to say as he feels. But as famous saying goes "Just because we can do a thing does not mean we should..." He spoke without thinking (or caring) about its impact. And he took everything too personally. A funny statement I made about him as a member of Mark King's crime family getting walloped "Untouchables" style he took as a encouragement for digest members to kick his butt, not as the "teamwork" statement everyone else read. A plea I posted under the headline "A BRAND NEW LEVEL 42 ALBUM" he responded to saying that "it would hurt me.", was "childish", and as helpful in sturing up his situation as the "O. J. Simpson media" although his name was never used. Not unlike a recent letter regarding certain auctioning practices on this digest... For the record, I have no opinion about Joe P. He is a electronic shadow on a mainframe somewhere, and shall never exist in real material form in my life. At this point, he is just words on a screen, and as such, in the words of Patrick Swayzee in "Roadhouse" Joe P. is just "words put together in order to get a prescribed response.." Although he has been banned from POSTING on this list, I'm sure he can still READ it, and does. Also, I AM AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN AS WELL, and must admit I never took his statements as racist, just hyperdefensive. And even if he is, he can't out debate me, or out fight me; he is virtually nothing to me, so his words can't bother me. But I do feel he needs a better love of the Lord before he can start pointing fingers at evryone else... TRUE Colours: So then I realized a tremendous fact during the Joe P. Affair. THERE ARE A LOT OF BLACK PEOPLE WHO LUV LEVEL 42. My fandom I thought was strange enough, because while I was standing in the mirror with my Casio SK-1 pretending to be Mike Lindup, my schoolmates were standing in front of their mirrors, grabbing their boyhoods, pretending to be LL Cool J. ("Forget Oreos, eat Cool J Cookies! I'm Bad!") When I first saw the "Love Games" vid I was blown away to see a young Black percussionist on cowbell. In "Hot Water" somebody was actually "poppin" to the music! I though I was the only guy out there who did that! Then in "Chant..." the was two Black youngsters dancing. But after that Blacks were everywhere in their vids. WOW! But I'm a bit weird. I freaked when I first saw "Red Dwarf" and Lister and Cat. So let me say a BIG "Wassup!" to Lolita, Winston, Randall, and all my Nubian Levelheaded friends...Great to see ya, glad to meet ya! Anyway, I would like to know just how many African-Americans there are here. Just to ease my mind. I just thought it was just too much that a acknowledged British Funk band, known as "the White Funky" has so many Black fans, thats all... The Chinese Way: I am SHOCKED at the mass of fans who love this song! Sorry, no one can ever say that I'm not as big a fan as the next guy, but BLEECK!!! This song gives me the shakes; I scan past it everytime it comes up. The only redeeming quality to this song (I my book, so there) is the fact that some EWF members helped produce it, which reminds me... Philip Bailey & Chinese Way: I seem to remember that Philip Baliey (a EWF regular, great fallestto (along with Mike), and Denver native) had released an solo album about the time as Chinese Way (this is the same time as "Easy Lover") with a song or two about China or the Wall of China. Anyway, it seems more than a coincidence that this album came out same time as his song brothers was in studio on Chinese Way. It reminds me of Wally B., and some of his releases sounding somewhat simular to L42 releases. If anyone has some insight on this, please post back... Artifacts: Thanks for the email on your own Level 42 artifacts. I hoped to bring up a discussion on Level 42 rarities, and I was OVERWHELMED at the response. The best yet is still the authentic used Mark King Bass Strings someone told me they had. If it was me, I would have stung up my bass and started slappin' thinking I was somehow magicly endowed with Mark's mythic bass skills. LEVEL-42 Type Songs: I love the idea to produce a Level 42 type album for fans and friends. I play bass (yea, big surprise there...), keys, and drums, as well as trumpet and sing tenor (and a damn good Mike Lindup fallsetto) in my church choir and praise band (of which I play bass). But, if I could contribute at all, I would like to submit song lyrics. I've been writing since forever, and have won a couple awards for my poetry in college. I'm no Boon, or Wally, but I'm sure I can do pretty well. Let me know if your interested.... Opps! I told someone that Krys Mach was the gun-toting, faceless wonder on "The Chant Has Begun" video.
