Well... Last night I dreamt I met MK and he was very chirpy and happy (the media image). I was some kind of journalist / happened to be in the same bus queue type person. I asked him about his most recent TV interview (The Pier) and how come he had not managed to release his solo project. He happily told me that at that time (which in the dream was about 2 years ago) he was attending "therapy" and had felt that the project did not really reflect what he wanted to do. We then went on to talk about snooker (wierd I know) and he came for a ride in my recently acquired Suzuki Vitara and I played him FN, which he said he didn't recognise! He got out the car and invited me for tea sometime! That was it! This is my first MK dream, and could be down to watching the X-Files, constantly lsitening to L42 and a lack of sleep! Those are some of my favourites as well. I really want to mention Robert Palmer here. I never see anyone mentioning him. His music is (as L42's) so TIMELESS. It never gets to sound OLD if you know what I mean. Re: Jamiroquai I listened to his latest and I seem to be missing his "point". I tend to say that I find it boring. Or is this the so-called L42 effect... ;) It just sound all a bit the same to me, kinda lazy-easy sound. Groetjes, Andre [KW is really, really good. My first album was "Radio Activity", which I picked up on cassette in the early 80's. Based on that, it's a wonder how I ended up really digging them! I had tix to see them in concert in Boston (The Mix Tour) back in 1991 (?) but alas, they cancelled the tour! Rats! As for Jamiroquai, I agree that the most recent album "Travelling Without Moving" kind of blows (I'm playing it right now and not really paying much attention). If you haven't already, pick up their first CD "Emergency On Planet Earth" -- it's really good. They're also good in concert... kind of like a bunch of kids playing phonkay (which they are). FYI, Jamiroquai and Talk Talk seem to be the two bands that share the "drawing board" for the next Worldmachine Digest mailing list... -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: L42 hits in Holland / 2 meter sessies From: "Andre Huijts" Date: Fri, 31 Jan 1997 13:55:06 +0100 Message to our Dutch subscribers: (Although I will write in English so everyone can understand) 1) Does anyone here have a listing of the hits L42 had in Holland ? (Including highest position, nr. of weeks etc.???) I think Love Games was Nr. 1 here wasn't it ? And I also seem to recall that SAY was no hit at all....... Anyone ? 2) Wouldn't it be GREAT if Mark King did a "2 meter sessie" ??? Maybe we should all E-mail Jan Douwe Kroeske to DEMAND that he gets Mark over to play ! What great idea !! Maybe when his new album is released ??? If non-Dutch subscribers would like to know what I am talking about: "2 meter sessies" are famous in Holland. They are sessions with more or less famous musicians, who play "live" in a studio (one take). It started of as a radioprogramme, but now it's on TV. In fact you may all say this is a bit like MTV unplugged, but I think MTV copied this idea, since "2 meter sessies" started earlier. However there's no public at "2 meter sessies" Most of the artists are quite "rocky", but I saw Zucchero yesterday. He played a great version of "Everybody's talking", but I am drifting off...... I was trying to remember what L42 songs hooked me. I was an Air Force dweeb living in the dorms in 1982 and one of the guys there was playing pool and listening to a really funky song. I believe it was '43'. I asked him what he was playing and he said that it was some group called 'Level 42'. Hmmm..I didn't get quite hooked at the time until I saw them on 'Top of the Pops'. Being in England at the time this was the 'American Bandstand' of the UK. They played 'Love Games' and I thought that this was pretty good stuff. Then I heard 'Living It Up' on BBC1 radio sometime later and became totally hooked. I found the 12" single of this and played it to death. Wonderful wonderful stuff! Like you, I never looked back. Jaime writes: > ..it's just strange that the country that they're biggest in seems to > have the least happening. I don't know how you Americans can arrange > a gathering in one place and not thinking twice about how many miles > are inbetween. I find it strange that the country of origin for the L-boys would have the fewest digest memebers. When I lived in England, it was hard to find a core of people who were real fans. There were a sprinkling of American fans here and there but I think up and coming group like Go West, The Culture Club, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Human League, etc. did slightly diminish L42's following. I was jaded temporarily because the above groups I just mentioned, I saw them all make their TV debut and these groups were hot! When 'World Machine' came out I got back to my senses, even though I still like those groups, when they were together. Let me tell you something about us Americans (or at least for me) - I love to travel. I think most Americans wouldn't think twice about traveling anywhere in our country if there was a real purpose for it. When I was in England, I traveled constantly. Cambridge, London, Oxford, Southwold, Cornwall, Strafford-Upon-Avon, etc, etc, etc. I even went to Scotland. The UK is roughly the size of California and it's very easy to go from one city/town/village to another. I don't mean to get 'England Nostalgic' but if I could, I would live there, and I tried to when my military tour was almost over. And the record stores there.... man!... Hey Lolita! When you get to England on your European tour, check out Andy's Records in Bury St. Edmonds and WHSmiths in Cambridge for any L42 stuff. Also in London, there's a record store called HMV on 150 Oxford St. It's the largest record store in the world! Something like 36,000 square feet. Huge!!!!!!!... sorry, I'm getting misty-eyed about my time in the UK..(sniff)... please forgive me... talk among yourselves...here's a subject... the movie 'The Prince of Tides' was neither about a prince nor tides... discuss... Jaime - I tried a few times to send you an email and it's always kicked back to me saying that your address doesn't exist. Care to comment? Eric - After reading your list of favorite bands, I was surprised to see that you not only like Chick Corea but his once supergroup Return To Forever. I have to say that 'Romantic Warrior' is my favorite album of all time. To me, it's the ultimate fusion album. What do you think? [RW is by far my favorite RTF album!! Dig that bass action on The Sorcerer!! I have most of their other stuff on tape, including various Al DiMeola and Stanley Clark stuff. I also forgot to mention Mahavishnu Orchestra... or maybe that was implied by my listing of Billy Cobham. Is anyone really into what Jan Hammer has been doing for the past twenty years??? -Eric] Winston's favorite groups: > 1. Weather Report > 2. Azymuth (brazilian jazz/funk) > 3. The Jeff Lorber Fusion > 4. Casiopea (Level 42 Toured japan with them in 1984) > 5. Go West Good list! With the exception of Casiopea (haven't heard of them) these are fantastic groups. Tell me Winston, do you like the stuff that Jeff Lorber does now? Like Level42, he doesn't have that gritty, hungry funk that he use to but his stuff is still fantastic. Doug - your assessment of Vic's new album is spot on. I don't really see much of a relationship between his new album and stuff done by the Rippington's and Spyro Gyra as your letter stated but maybe I didn't read it too carefully. Everybody, if you don't have Vic's CD, get it.....NOW! One last minor point: I just got the new CD by Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerals (High Ball with the Devil). A very good CD, especially the track "The Awakening". Les Claypool's brand of 'funk' at its best. Enough said. Randall P.S. From: Michael Payne Organization: Oklahoma State University Phys Plnt Date: Fri, 31 Jan 1997 16:23:45 -0600 Taken from MUSICBUS CANADA November 1987: ***THIS ARTICLE HAS BEEN EDITED FOR LENGTH*** MARK KING comments on why his LEVEL 42 are so popular these days: "We spent many hours and days with some American executives from Polydor branch in America, Polygram, and we discussed what sort of format would they put out for us......We actually gave them our World Machine album the same time we gave copies to the British company, the UK firm loved it, the Yanks hated it and said that it sounded, "NEAT" but sounded too much like a demo. Well we were crushed by this, as the main emphasis on WM was to open up this locked market and play to some new people the music of Level 42. When that didnt happen, we said well, that's that boys and we really felt that our chances of ever coming to North America were nil. Then the turning point came when WM shot up in the European charts, then all of a sudden these YANKS wanted to jump aboard and release the album. You see with these record people it always stlgstlgstlg (pound) sign to them. So Polydor, rather, Polygram released the album and Something About You went to #7 in the US and #5 in Canada. We were just blown away, we honestly didn't think it was going to chart at all. Well, we wanted to continue the "madness" in North America so we went into writing RITF. We only wrote the album in 8 weeks and recorded it in 3 weeks, which is something that we have never done before. Everybody, except our hard-core fans, liked it. I was worried that we had rushed everything together just to release an album, instead of concentrating on a solid album. Again, we, or evem I, expected RITF to go Platinum in less tha a week in the UK, and Platinum in 4 or 5 different countries. I finally felt sort of relieved in a way! You know, that all your hard work has paid off. Now come the touring and promoting of it, that really kills you. I mean, WE like to tour, we not only can write our music, but can play it live too, which most bands can't do. We do get some energy when we play live, it is nice to see such a polarised response sometimes to a "new" audience that you have never played in front of before. We have wanted for years to play the halls in North America, but we "needed" a single to use as a frame of reference. Thankfully, Something About You last year and now our latest single, Lessons in Love, has given us the chance to play.....I know that we are going to spens, spend, spend as they say here. But we want to make our name for ourselves here, so in future our releases will be accepted on merit, rather than how much money they can reap from us! (MARK GRINS).....The single Lessons In Love is more of a "new-age-funk" if you like, we have tried to combine what we have done in the past and mix it with a bit of technology, you know Toaster meets Microwave sort of thing. The whole band, including Wally composed lyric and melodies for the song, we knew right when we finished mixing it, that it was going to a SMASH in Europe. The first lyrics of Lessons was really more sexist than the current version. Phil idea, originally, had the lyrics about a guy lost at sea and what he would do when he found his true love again, we found ourselves laughing during vocal recordings as the lyrics were not just right for the song, so we toned it down a bit.....I have to say that the RITF album is a more relaxed, yet more techno sound for Level 42. We have tried some different synths and I have tried to polish some of the bass lines within, to sort of bring in our influences. The first song we wrote for the album was a track called To Be With You Again, which is a very heroic sort of song, you know Superman and Lois Lane story. Another song on the album is one called Two Solitudes, which is very different for us....We actually were in the USA whn Lessons in Love was top of the charts in Europe, we almost didn't do the video the way we did as we were short on time as we had to finish mastering some tracks, do some vocal work, rehearse for a "worldwide" tour and this vid for a song that we thought would be popular for maybe 2 minutes, eh!" ------------------------------ Subject: All She Wants From: "Sunset Post, Inc." I played in a band back in 1984 with their percussionist Matt Zimbel and we got talking about Level 42 (he recognized the Mark King licks I lifted!). They were quite into Level 42. No wonder I liked Manteca! Jo-Anne ------------------------------ Subject: Re: L42 and the press From: Arjan Meijer Organization: IP/Informatica Projectgroep B.V. For the past four or five years, everytime I find something written about L42 in magazines and newspapers (it isn't too often!) here in Sweden, it is always negative. The various reporters always think of L42 as "dry, academic funk", meaning boring and uninteresting. Can you believe it!" Well, I can say that the Dutch prees isn't too fond of L42 also... I checked out some old articles I have. Here's a brief selection: On the Guaranteed-tour: Popmusic has always been associated with rebellion... When L42 gave their concert yesterday, the Haags Congresgebouw was all peace and harmony [Do you hear what he's writing... - Ar] it even was prohibited to smoke during the concert. The audience existed out of neatly dressed couples, who wanted to check how their cd-collection sounded live. And they weren't disappointed. The new songs don't add anything to the stuff that was there already. The songs have all the same tempo, and the melodies are as happy as a group of boyscouts on holiday-camp. The show was like one long song, without any climax. The enthousiasm of die-hard L42-fans has spoiled the band. They are nowadays sponsored by a producer of alarm-clocks [Braun - Ar], but it seems like the band has dozed of. Another writer, on the same tour: When the lights go down, MK walks onto the stage: uninterested, and eating gum. With difficulty he says "Hello Kerkraad". And it stays difficult during the show. The only person who tries to bring enthousiasm to the crowd is ML, but his keyboard-playing is no match for a drummer dozing to sleep, an indolent bass-player and a yawning brass-section. Well, these are only two articles I could find. It seems that the news-papers always write negative about L42. The musicians-magazins on the contrary usualy are more pro-MK. But then they barely even write about L42. Sorry I couldn't bring some more joy to the world. "WE DREAM IN COLOUR, BUT WE PAINT EACHOTHER BLACK AND WHITE" Arjan
