From: paul fucito Date: Wed, 05 Nov 1997 07:17:56 -0500 I've always wondered this.... With the success of Level 42 in England in 1984/1985 and Mark King's connection with Midge Ure (Chief author of the song), why was Level 42 NOT involved with the Band-Aid project??? I think they would've been perfect. Were they ever approached to do it? Paul F. ------------------------------ Subject: rereleases, baby, clips & L42 game From: "dirk.vael" Date: 5 Nov 97 13:14:46 After being a lurker regarding the discussions about the re-releases, I might add my two cents to the discussion: I wouldn't feel as being ripped off if I pay these CDs if: - mid price - remastered (esp. SITL) - liner notes or some extra piccies inside (will the include this time with TC the 'My Hero' lyrics??) - 75 mins each minimum (normal album plus 20 mins of remixes, b-sides of that album, live trax or unreleased stuff) Eventually, the normal albums tracks might be replaced with a 99% similar version, but a longer (extended) one, if avail. But if these CDs are so called 'shovelware' (the standard cd & casing, plus a single bonustrack, like Mike Lindups re-release), forget it, I won't buy'em. Then I would buy the Digest CD, which would prob appear sooner or later ;-) about that 'Baby' note: my mini trivia: WHAT L42 TRACK STARTS WITH THE WORD "BABY" ?????? And wouldn't it be nice if someone could capture the L42 vidclips, esp. from the FN era in avi or mpeg format? If they made a computer game of L42, like they did with Frankie Goes To Hollywood (remember), how would the story of the game look like. Suggestions and brainstorming on this digest please! Controlling MK slipping his bass with a joystick... Might be fun, except for the joystick!!! Dirkies ps: anyone out there with an N64 & Dr64 drive from Bung? ------------------------------ Subject: random thoughts From: "Bowman, Brian J. (McConnell AFB)" Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 08:31:51 -0600 Just some stuff I need to communicate. 1) To Steve Allert and other "Texas" fans - Looks like I won't be making the Texas Levelfest. I was trying to rearrange my schedule but it didn't work out. Thanks for keeping me in the loop - maybe next time. Looking forward to reading the posts about the get-together. 2) This is a question I've always wanted to ask. There's probably no "right" answer but I hope to hear some theories from you, especially our musicians out there. The question - "Why do you think Level 42 albums were often panned by critics? Am I the only one who ever noticed this? I'm thinking of Rolling Stone magazine (who never gave any 42 album better than 2 stars on a 1-5 scale) in particular, but other magazine were luke warm to the band as well. Thoughts, anyone? 3) This certainly is not intended to offend anyone out there, but I must ask - "Is there a remote thread I'm missing that links Chapman Sticks to Level 42?" I'm glad someone else asked what a Chapman Stick was ... I've been on the digest since May and never figured it out. Hell, I thought they might have been the preferred drum sticks of some digest members (Chapman Stick player). You have to admit, when Chapman Sticks get more digest attention than that cool post from - was it Richard? - about the boys jamming with Gary Husband on an instructional video, something is wrong. I want to hear more details about that. Who knows, maybe they jammed together and thought, "Maybe we shouldn't have chucked the band after all." I know, I'm dreaming. 4) I don't own every single solitary Level 42 item ever produced, never had the pleasure of seeing them live, never knew half of what I know about the band's history until this digest and the great homepages many of you have painstakingly created - but I still consider myself a fan. Can we cut the "true" fan stuff out? It's a bit juvenile, don't you think? Regards, Bo (not a Chapman Stick player) :-) (just a joke) ------------------------------ Subject: Slow Jamz n' Vinyl From: Charon Acheron Date: Wed, 05 Nov 1997 10:01:33 -0500 Hi everyone! A few tunes that I find indespensible as Level 42 slow jamz are as Seven Days, Why Are you Leaving?, Silence, Romance, and of course, IT'S OVER!!! Also, Dirk- I have had a HARD time finding "A Physical Presence" on vinyl, but that might just have something to do witht the fact that I am in the US.. : ) That's about all for now-- Looking forward to the NYC Levelfest!!! I'm very new to the World Of 42. Also, Richard Roy's post yesterday about the recent "42 Reunion",(at least the Gaurenteed-era 42), for Husband's instructo- video caused an immediate change of underwear-I couldn't believe it. Holdsworth has always been one of my many father figures on guitar. Before I played with CHICAGO, I had the bizarre fortune to be Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band's guitarist. Everytime I would slip and let my Holdsworthian, John McGlaughlin, Belew, etc. influences come raging out on Bob's Chuck Berry-demanding hits, he would come over and politely but sternly yell "Mr. Bailey, I don't know where you are, but would you please come back to Earth" Needless to say, I lasted only one tour, one album. and one Chevy truck commercial with Seger. Gary Moore is a monster too, but Alan +"If You Were Mine"= GOD!!! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Subject: Micro-Levelfest, astrology From: "Richard N. Herren" Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 12:58:27 -0500 Hi, all. Just got back in town; time to catch up a bit: In Digest 303, Don Zipf (DonZipf @ aol.com) wrote about our meeting in his hometown. He was a gracious host, providing a meal, some good conversation, free publicity, & even some L42 music I didn't have & hadn't heard. Thanks for everything, Don! Don was quite the bassist; I was painfully reminded of my failure to pick up an instrument over the last couple years. I was also somewhat embarrassed by my relative lack of knowledge regarding my favorite band. So thanks for the kick in the pants, as well. To those of you who make the trek to Don's home at night, don't be frightened by his horror movie driveway. On the other hand, his neighbor is a bit nutty.... In Digest 306, Lauren (StingFan21 @ aol.com) wrote: >>I can't believe how many people share the same sign as Mark!!!<< Why not? With roughly 540 subscribers & only twelve astrological signs, we can expect about 45 members in any given sign, plus or minus allowances for the expected bell curves in March, September & November, standard deviation, & currently unresearched similarities in our (decidedly non-random) sample group. Sorry to pick nits (off-topic), but astrology has always been pseudoscience (or, bunk, if you prefer), & can safely be predicted to stay that way. To debate, or for more information about astrology (&/or statistics), please respond to me personally, funkydj @ trader.com. -Rich ------------------------------ Subject: SEATTLE From: "James, Daniel" Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 11:10:36 -0800 > 1) "Two Solitudes" gets on my list of L42 slow jams. Thanks for the > suggestion. I love "SATS" (the song) too, but it still sounds more like > the theme to a detective movie. Imagine Mark and Mike in trench coats > looking for the one-armed man... Absolutely. Running in the Family has never been my favorite album, but this track is one of my favorites (and of course Freedom Someday). Such beautiful melody and blend. > I agree, the level bast video is way cool....especially for those of us > unfortunate enought to not see the releases the first time around. I > especially like the fact that Mark continues the theme from Something > About You to Leaving Me Now with the clown-like suit. I also liked the > Chant Has Begun, not just for the lyrics, which are great, but for the > original style in the video! This video is fantastic. I was so thrilled when I saw it in Tower several years ago; I'm thinking about ordering the LD just to have it while it's still available. As for The Chant, I usually skip it. Something about the video just doesn't rub me right, plus the audio on that song is Mono and it sounds like crap. On a different note, I know that the Manhattan Transfer has been brought up several times over the past few years. I'd pretty much given up on hearing anything good from them on their more recent works (I bought or borrowed everything but been very disappointed over the past few years). However I've been giving the Offbeat of Avenue's another listen recently, and decided that it's their best work since Vocalese (and possibly even better than that). I *love* the title track, and am in love with the two ballads "Gentleman with a Family" and "A World Apart" (which is one of the most beautiful of their arrangements). Does anyone have Cheryl's solo album? I tried to order it last month from CDNow and it came back as unavailable. I have one of Janis Siegal's albums (At Home) which is great, but always found Cheryl's soultry voice very appealing and her arrangements to be even better than Janis's and am curious to know if the album is worth looking for. Lastly... *** SEATTLE ALERT *** We're getting together this Saturday, Nov 8th around 11am. Anyone that hasn't been contacted that is interested in getting together should get in touch. We'll be meeting at Bill Wilson's place, and since he's declared November as Level 42 month, we'll be listening to nothing but Level 42 for the day (although I'm going to sneak in some Incognito when he's not looking). I think there are some other fests going on this weekend so y'all have fun out there. Let's get this intl fest date set in stone shall we? Or are will still waiting to hear if Mark will be able to make it. ONE CD with rare tracks would be boring compared to the importance of recognising that Level 42 music is good enough to be completely re-mastered and all unreleased tracks put out. I cant wait! I am continuing my mission to see about the viability of me, myself making a rare unreleased track available to digest members This is a sore point I can tell you and I seem to be met with a wall of silence in my investigaions. As usual I can state that I will be doing my utmost to make sure that every piece of Level 42 material that exists is made available to be heard to fans all over the world, because for me personnaly,Its not just the fidelity of tracks, or having the albums etc but listing to all music made by the band and all the lyrics they wrote, my quest will not be complete until I have heard everything. To coin a much maligned phrase 'You havent heard anything, until you've heard everything.' Unfortunalty I think some tracks will never be heard, 'Haunted House' and 'Nothing More To Say' could only perhaps have ever been recorded at concerts in the early eighties and they may never surface. Night Train was only ever rehearsed and probably never even played live, although I am aware that this song DID exist on a hand held audio tape machine 5 years ago. Morning is the radio 1 song, but radio 1 hae no knowledge of it anymore, if they had broadcast the session we would all have this track now. It is all the more intrigueing that PCM were allowed to pillage the Radio 1 vaults for every Level 42 items they had, last year. This lead to the release of 'Live At Wembley', but Morning was not uncovered, bummer. Still, I am sure that next year we will a veritable plethora of new tracks to digest, and I for 1 cant wait. Fact: The european Staring At The Sun tour programme had about 4 more pages than the UK one! See you later...............................LOZ ------------------------------ Subject: JTQ, Cover 42, and messages to Loz and Dirkies From: "FRINGE ELEMENT" Date: Wed, 5 Nov 97 12:33:47 PST Hey gang, Well, I finally broke down and bought a CD by the James Taylor Quartet, last night. I put on the CD player this morning as I was getting ready for work, so while I didn't listen all that closely to it, what I heard was pretty good. That was a real relief after totally disliking Buckshot LeFonque...but for the most part, the recommendations of people on the digest for music has been right on. How else would I have been exposed to Jamiroquai, Me'shelle Ndegocello, Incognito, amongst other fine pieces of music that I have in my collection. The JTQ CD is that one that begins with the Theme from Starsky & Hutch. As for the announcement on the 10/25 digest (wow, that's the closest I've been to caught up in a long time) by Bruce Conrad re his project and Bill Wilson's upcoming Cover 42 II, i gotta say that Cover 42 #1 was excellent and look forward to the time that I can actually send him some email and say hey! I want it! But, Bruce, I look forward to the day that I can send you email and say....hey!! what do I gotta do to get one??? Or did I just do that? Loz!?!?! You're back, and none too soon, it is always nice to hear from the Zealot Level 42 amongst the rest of us. As for the biographies that he has, if you don't have it and think you might want it...don't hesitate to send him some cash and have you mail you one. They're really well worth it and fun to read and smirk at the picture captions. I'm pleased that I could get this. MESSAGE TO DIRK: I haven't gotten to mail your package yet, but it should go out in the next couple of days.....I know I said Monday but life got in the way, I'm sorry. Doug To: LEVEL42 @ WORLDMACHINE.COM ------------------------------ Subject: New Levelhead to the digest From: MSUSECOS.GJAMATE @ eds.com Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 15:50:38 -0500 Hello Levelheads, I have recently subscribed to the digest, and would just like to share my interest in it, and introduce myself. I am looking to find any news about Level 42 that I may possibly find. I also just enjoy to share the common interest with folks. I recently moved to New York after living in Germany for 5 years. I learned about Mark King through my bass teacher. He showed me Love Games as a beginning slap groove. That hooked me. I bought the cd Level 42, then got 'Early Tapes' and another one. I played bass for three years in a funk band in Frankfurt, and am looking for a soul or funk band to play with here. Some of my favorite bands are: Larry Graham and GCS, Incognito, Jamiroquai, Tower of Power. Does anybody know where I can find manuscript or tablature for the main bass groove in the song '43'? I regret becoming Level 42 fan after all their great years. Now that Mark has declared that 42 is no more, my thoughts about L42 are all in the past tense. This saddens me. ciao for now, Greg Jamate ------------------------------ Subject: How about a NORTHERN CAL Levelfest and an aside to Winston/Lolita From: "FRINGE ELEMENT" Date: Wed, 5 Nov 97 16:05:29 PST Hey S.F.
