Just posting to say hello and introduce myself. Bear with me if there are a lot of mistakes. As for Level, I've been a fan since 1985. Some frat brothers of mine were really into the band. I knew of SAY at the time and liked it, but when I heard WM and "I Sleep On My Heart", I instantly became a huge fan. Since then I've never looked back. I even saw them live once back in 1987 in Jacksonville, Florida. To this day, the best concert I've ever seen. I think it is Mark's voice. The guy is awesome. I'm still heartbroken over the breakup but haven't given up completely. Part of me sees a reunion album and world tour in the next 5 or so years. Mark and Mike were supposed to write and perform together, why fight destiny? I have seen information about hard to find music by the band in this listing and other places but don't understand how to contact anyone about ordering. Can anyone help me out? Forgive my computer stupidity, but I am trying. I just want hard to find Level 42 stuff! Preferably post WM projects. Thanks everybody. Feel free to contact me anytime with L42 info future and past. MIKE ------------------------------ Subject: Europe From: lolita @ interserv.com Date: Thu, 30 Jan 1997 05:57:03 -0800 Hey All: I'm going to be taking Europe by storm in late May-early June, so anyone who is around and would like to get together while I'm im your country, block out the following: May 24 - May 26 Amsterdam May 27 - May 30 Munich May 30 - June 1 Berlin June 2 and 3 Paris June 3 - June 8 London (with a day excursion to Isle of Wight) I want to do CD shops, pubs and bars, good acid jazz and funk clubs, and lots of shopping. As I said, anyone who wants to get together I would love it, particularly in the UK. Even if you can't hang, some recommendations of places to go would be greatly appreciated. Thanxalot. Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Two days in a row?? From: Tampachuck @ aol.com Date: Thu, 30 Jan 1997 09:53:17 -0500 (EST) What? Another post from Chuck? NO, not again!! He must be CRAZY. I AM MARK K.....no wait....I'm Batman. Shuf: That's really cool of you to buy that stuff for us. Are you going to auction it off? Hey, I have an extra copy of "Family of Five", and I'll start the bidding at $55.00. Any takers? Joe Shenefield: Welcome aboard! You know, I've often wondered the same thing. Does anyone know if the band knows we exist? Mikey: Great post! I did have a dream a few months ago that I met MK. I've been listening for 11 years. I always go right to the "L" section in a record store. I even like The Chinese Way!!! Does that mean I have Level XLII ES too??? Or am I just crazy from the heat?? (it's 72 degrees here) I AM PHIL GOULD!!!!! ------------------------------ Subject: Favorite Groups From: EMIKATIE @ aol.com Date: Thu, 30 Jan 1997 10:47:49 -0500 (EST) Here is my list of top 5 favorite groups/artists. 1. Air Supply 2. England Dan and John Ford Colley 3. Shaina Twain (sp) 4. Bobby Goldsboro 5. The Flying Burrito Brothers Here is my second list of favorite groups although they are in random order. Level 42 Nick Heyward The Beautiful South Prince (or the artist formerly known as) Simply Red I noticed there has not been much mention of rare Level 42 artifacts owned by members. I previously mentioned the Madness MK remix of Michael Caine. The next morsel I would like to offer is my Mark King Pez dispenser. As I have multiple copies, I'll take bids, but in keeping with digest rules, you'll have to e-mail me privately. The machine stops. John M ------------------------------ Subject: Songs From: Mr Pink Organization: Sandstorm Date: Wed, 29 Jan 1997 20:44:58 +0000 Hi, I thought I'd list what I considered to be Level 42 greatest 'songs'. By this I mean the songs that would still be good if performed by somone else. For example, can you imagine 'A Pharoes Dream' being good if sung by Elton John? I'm not counting tracks that are good simply because they are played by Level 42, like 'The Sunbed song'. Try and drain away the Level 42 aspect - just think of the songs... I hope you see what I mean. Here goes (not in any order): * Why are you leaving. * Out of sight out of mind * Lying still * It's Over * Starchild (oh yes) * Talking in your sleep * Play Me * Leaving me now * My Hero * Somthing about you Hmmm.. these are mostly ballads... What do you lot think? I suppose it comes down to what you like in a song... But these are songs that I could imagine other bands playing the most. See ya, David -- ******************************************************* * David Goodall // MrFish @ sandstorm.demon.co.uk * ******************************************************* ------------------------------ Subject: Live version Physical Presence From: Gert Emmens Date: Thu, 30 Jan 1997 16:45:44 +0100 Perhaps this question is asked before (I'm only for two months subscribed to this digest now): Yesterday I bought a copy of the CD 'Turn it on' (A Level 42 compilation-CD). There is a beautiful LIVE-version of Physical Presence on it, with a very heavy bass (played by synth and bass-guitar). Anyone who knows when and where this track was recorded? See Ya Gert Emmens ------------------------------ Subject: General Bollocks From: Jamie.SELL @ sb.com Date: 30 Jan 97 12:02:47 -0400 All, After 2 months of being on the digest it has occured to me that I've heard of no Level 42 meetings taking place in the UK. I admit that I've probably missed out on a few, but there's nothing on the horizon. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to organise one sod that, sounds like too much hard work, it's just strange that the country that they're biggest in seems to have the least happening. I don't know how you Americans can arrange a gathering in one place and not thinking twice about how many miles are inbetween. I live in the home counties and if one was arranged in Aberdeen that would too far to go. My dedication to the band remains constant though. My list of groups OTM, The Beatles The Verve The Beatles Kula Shaker Manic Street Preachers The Beatles The Cure Ocean Colour Scene Pixies Radiohead The Beatles Level 42 As you can see, Level 42 stands on its own as far as musical styles go. From: "Julian Arnold" Date: 30 Jan 1997 09:14:52 -0800 Hello Pals, Yesterday Michael wrote regarding L42ES: > Symptoms: Know the lyrics to Guaranteed > Have dreamt about meeting LEVEL 42 > You have 5 or more CD Singles > The first place you go in a record shop is the L section > Find yourself singing counter-melodies > Spending over $250 a year in Level 42 stuff > Hum a Level tune at work > You think you are really Mark King This is trippy, I couldn't agree more. I think now I need m..my f..fix oh God!! (slips in World Machine CD to Hi-Fi) aaaaaaah! that's better!! seriously though there are patterns here. I've been a devout fan officially for 10 years this month!. Hey about those 2 live CD's, Dronten and another one both on CD, I'm willing to buy copies of those. I'll look at the respective digests but if the person who wrote that please email me directly . Guaranteed Live video transferred to CD? yep I'm on for it. Do we have that CD burner the digesteers put in for, up yet? that may do it. Man is this a great time to be a L42 fan or what????? (getting slightly carried away) Cheers Big Ears!! (**ck off Noddy!!) ...for our UK readers!!! P.S. I read somewhere Joe P. has "T.G.I.F" printed inside all of his shoes.... (Toes Go In First??) Later, Jules. (That's a whole 'nother story!) In perusing the liner notes I came across a connection between Level 42 and Everything But The Girl. Does anyone care to make a guess as to what that connection may be? The former is called "The General" and the latter "The Mule", as you'll learn if you follow the link below. Also, anyone suspect that Dune may have been the inspiration behind the 'The Sun Goes Down' video?. Enjoy... 1. I loved Flim & the BB's "The Adventures Of..." - Joe Smith: I'd like to take you up on your offer, email me with your desired terms, please. I'd also like to know a little about that video you have, thanks! Shuf - I loved your urinal story. Vivid! But you know, I bet you MK *would* piss over a fallen comrade! If for nothing more than the yuks. My favorite 5 bands - Level 42 (that doesn't count, right?) Tears For Fears (RATKOS!) (as of 10:45am) Nik Kershaw (can't wait for the new one) Toy Matinee/Kevin Gilbert (can't say enough) ;) Rush (brought prog to the masses) Dave Matthews Band (how 'bout that Carter?) A public thank you to Winston for the AYGB color insert (mine was B/W), and everyone else involved with the creation and distribution of it. AYGB actually sounds better now! ;-) Does anyone have any real clear footage of Phil in concert? I've got the music vid's and the stuff that Mike Payne put together, but I'm looking for a copy that has fewer generations in its family tree, if you know what I mean. Nothing against Mike's tape - it's great (I'm NOT the source of Joe P's "laughing stock" comment) - but not real clear, unfortunately. -Marc ------------------------------ Subject: musical faves From: "Eric J. Looks like my goal to be caught up by the end of January is going to die a horrid death, but I am at 25 September, so at least I'll be well into October, when the month finally expires. Just some comments on the stuff that I've read recently... Not having ever been a musician or being able to keep the beat very well, it never ceases to amaze me when I read all the stuff that you much better musically endowed people have to say about things, I often go back and listen to certain songs with notes in my hand from comments that people have made. Sometimes I catch on to what's been talked about, but other times I shrug my shoulders and continue to wonder what I'm missing. But as they say, we all have our reasons for liking the guys. I have been a music buying frenzy these last 2 months, and while I won't go into what I've bought right now, I will say that as much as I raved about Vic Wooten, whoever it was (I've forgotten) that put out the recommendation for Grafitti....all I can say is OHMIGOD! Folks, if you like music akin to Spyro Gyra or the Rippingtons or groups of similar musical quality, run down to your nearest shop and snap their CD up. Man, what great music. On the debate about which period is better: Pre World Machine or Post Staring at the Sun or whatever....I don't know myself, but I will say that whatever I put on the CD player get multiple play no matter what it is. But then, I am one of those "I know what I like when I hear it, please don't ask me to explain why" types. That's why I like some strange stuff and hate other music you'd think I ought to like. But that's all of us, I guess. Anyways, that all for now. But I wanna recommend some music to you, sort of to repay all of you for introducing my to music I might never have tried. Find a CD from a group called Manteca, and no fellow Level 42 fans from California this Manteca is not the Manteca is NOT the Manteca you're thinking of. These guys are from Canada and play with a lot of energy. I saw them once at the Concord Pavilion after, of all people, Miles Davis. While Miles and his group were stupendous, these guys were truly unbelievable...too bad it was so damn cold, it was hard to pay attention while freezing your ass off in the darkness. It was the JVC jazz festival from of about '88 or '89, I'd guess. Check 'em out gang, I think you'll like 'em. Bye all, have a nice weekend. Doug
