I saw their new CD today and a sticker on the front of the case said that it contained two bonus tracks for the US only. The tracks are not available outside of the USA!!!. So for once, a non-import has bonus tracks for the US only!!! This is the first time I've ever seen this. To Mark Hughes: thanks for the update To the digest: Mark Hughes is a good man. Give his LevelAds page a try - NOW. The machine stops. John ------------------------------ Subject: The Hook From: Winman42 @ aol.com Date: Wed, 29 Jan 1997 08:58:07 -0500 (EST) I have always been partial to the chorus in 'Children Say', as we used to say as kids, "can't beat that with a stick!" All this time I thought i was one of the only 'Flim & The B.B.'s_ fans. I also love Billy Barber's solo album. He being the bands keyboardist. Got to see the bassist a few times with Guitarist Lee Ritenour as well. Mark Tripping? During thanksgiving I sat up with Tampachuck and we tried to find the spot where Mark trips, we never did find it, but now we both know exactly where to look. Thanks! (I need a life, huh?) Two questions: 1. Does anyone have the lyrics to all the songs on AYGB? 2. Does Cooltalk also work with 'conventional' chatting? I want to chat in the L42-room but I don't quite know how cooltalk works... Unfortunately, after not hearing anything from them for a while, I e-mailed dmp records which is the company they used to record for. I was told that when they went to WB they weren't a very big hit and were dropped. They began fighting amongst themselves and broke up. The person who e-mailed me said that it was unlikely they would ever get back together. I have all of their dmp recordings on disc if anyone wants a copy AND I also have a video of a concert that was aired on PBS from Michigan or Minnesota, I don't remember. If anyone wants a copy of any of this let me know. WARNING! If you want to get some of their stuff you had better hurry. Their recordings are becomming harder and harder to find. Where was the video for It's Over filmed? Answer below. Long sequence of events, shortend. I was watching Level Best the other night and again wondered to myself where It's Over was filmed. This morning as I was driving in to work, I was listening to a tape that Winston had made for me (thanks very much Winman... I got them on Monday!) with a number of Level 42 interviews. Alas, the answer to the question was revealed. The video was filmed at Mammoth which I believe is North-East of Los Angeles. > Have we had this debate before? I AM MARK KING!!! Funny story. On a friend's twenty-first birthday, several of us took him out for drinking chicanery. He too was a fan of 42 (he was a drummer and a really dug Phil Gould). Tom gets really really really REALLY drunk and finds himself on the bathroom floor in a bar, right under a urinal and attempting to crawl under a stall (I think the door was stuck, but maybe he was doing it for the challenge). I proceed to stand over him and use the urinal. He complains "Hey, that's not cool. Mark King wouldn't do that!" Okay, maybe it's not THAT funny, but it shows 42 is not far out of anyone's mind ever. ------------------------------ Subject: Re: The LEVEL 42 Effect Syndrome From: Michael Payne Organization: Oklahoma State University Phys Plnt Date: Wed, 29 Jan 1997 12:19:04 -0600 There is a guy that I know here in Stillwater that works at my music store (Hastings) and his name, you got it...MARK KING! Plus, I've worked for a few hotels in my time, so I know what they want and the stuff they'll try. Basically, I can speak the jargon of conference planning. Let me know if you need my help. I just went in a few weeks ago and cleaned out Circuit City of their Live at Wembley and Forever Now (Resurgence) stock for people on the Digest. So what do they do? They go back out and re-order it, AND bring in a copy of the Remix Collection (the one with the great remixes of Tracie and Heaven in My Hands that are different from the officially released remixes) for $11.99! They also have a copy of the following: Midge Ure--Breathe Midge Ure--The Gift (includes 3 tracks with Mark King, including the INCREDIBLE effort "The Chieftain") for $9.99 Style Council--The Singular Adventures... (a good place to start with TSC, though not particularly rare) Incognito--Beneath the Surface (brand new with 2 bonus tracks, several copies) for $12.99 Joe Jackson--Big World (this is one of the most remarkable albums I've heard. It's all recorded live directly to a 4-track but you'd swear it was a studio performance because everything is complex as hell and utterly flawless) for $15.99 Kevin Gilbert--thud with bonus EP "Kashmir" for $12.99 Kinda nice to see a major chain dealing at fair prices, huh? I'll bring my sticks :-@ Jason B: Why don't you fly across the pond and bring that Chapman Stick. That would be cool. I'll buy ;-) Mighty Moondude: Great B&BB skit! Don't you wish they were actually intelligent enough to make those observations? Then again, if they were, they wouldn't exist. Hmmm. My 4.2 cents worth on the Level effect: I experienced this the first time I heard them! On WM, no less! (The US version) After I finished grooving to SAY, WM came on, and I thought, "This is pretty weird music..." until LMN started playing, which kept me from throwing it out the window, then GMIAS and LSIYA (don't you love these abbreviations?) turned my opinion back around. Of course, I love them ALL now (11 years later) Similar experience w/SATS, but the rest....instant love. Wes: Got the Wally CD. Thanks a million man, although I am experiencing the Level effect with it too. It's only natural. I don't mean to rag on someone behind their back, but he sounded like he was kind of whacked. I feel sorry for him in a way. I just don't think he's playing with a full deck... not even 42 cards. Peter Schickele (alias P.D.Q.Bach) Lots of country and blues too...anyway enough of my boring interest.. On the subject of Joe P. as mentioned by Lolita (forwarded msg): I, too, got a letter from Joe. It wasn't quite what he had written to you, Lolita, but he gave me a story about how falsely he was accused of being a racist and how his mother was called in by her boss to say that her son made racist comments on the net. He seemed really hurt by it but sometimes that's hard to tell just by reading a letter. My relationship with him was actually positive in a way but like most digesters, I was put off by his unappropriate behavior and I told him so. I suppose it doesn't matter now. Will Joe change? Randall ------------------------------ Subject: local press From: Konstantin Braticevic Date: Thu, 30 Jan 1997 11:42:51 +0000 Hello! On the subject of the "L42-effect", I wrote a few days ago that I thought L42 were better in the verse-department than the chorus equivalent. Their songs were missing something I couldn't verbalize: > I think the phenomena is called the "hook". I think Koko is > saying the songs lack a commercial "hook". He may be right. Thank you John (EMIKATIE)! Hook is the word. In a MTV interview, during the GUARANTEED days, Mark King commented on what Polydor had thought of their latest album (as you might know, they thought it dindn't have enough potential for the american market), and why the band had left Polydor for RCA: "It's like someone saying that your girlfriend is ugly!" Now on to another topic. For the past four or five years, everytime I find something written about L42 in magazines and newspapers (it isn't too often!) here in Sweden, it is always negative. The various reporters always think of L42 as "dry, academic funk", meaning boring and uninteresting. Can you believe it! The british music magazine "Q" wrote of L42's latest release Live At Wembley that the songs performed on that album proove how bad english pop music was at a certain time. What?! What is going on here? What does your local press think of L42? "time is still the one thing (Pa Da Kaooo) that money can't buy" Koko.
