Is that Allan Holdsworth or Jakko playing on At This Great Distance (before you say definitively, consider the date of recording at Allan H's dates of 42 service). Then, answer this. Are we sure it's even guitar that is doing all that wailing at the end of that song? Oh, the dread 42 effect: I'll say that I had to settle in to Guaranteed and Staring at the Sun for sure. Forever Now and Running in the Family, no. As I recall, every other album took settling in as well, including World Machine. IN FACT, NOW THE TRUTH CAN BE TOLD: When I first heard Level 42, I didn't like them. I mean, I didn't like them A LOT! I hated Hot Water. I DJ'ed at a high school station back in '85-'86 (yes, I'm THAT old), and we started playing Hot Water before we started playing Something About You. Mike's nasal vocals on Hot Water drove me nuts. Good thing Something About You came along when it did, or I may not have ever gotten interested in these guys at all! shuf shuf @ darkwing.uoregon.edu ------------------------------ Subject: Other bands... If you like the idea, then post your favourite four or five bands. I know it isn't directly related to L42, but it would help us to get an impression of this "population". Although I still dislike him, I thought it would only be fair to present what he said. Maybe all of this venom toward him has chastened him a bit. I doubt it. Anyway, here it is. --------------------- Forwarded message: From: gastonka @ plu.edu To: lolitaj @ aol.com Date: 97-01-27 21:29:59 EST Lolita Jackson, For the record, I am not a racist, nor do I have a racist bone in my body. I am sorry that you feel I am. I am the first person to stand up against racism. It makes me mad to see it. For the record I spent two years at my former college working with the multi-cultural department. For the record, the closest thing I evr had to a dad was my Uncle Bob, who is a BLACK man. I am a big Police Academy fan and in part 4, there is a segmnet where actor Michael Winslow (a black man) says that Proctor (a white dufus) is a "ghetto favorite." I always thought the line was funny and have used it from time to time WITHOUT incident AROUND people of color. So my advice to you, though I understand why you might think otherwise AND be defensive, is to NOT jump the gun and assume someone is racist without having the facts before you. Bottom line, I am writing you to let you know that I am not your enemy on this issue. Anything but. I was concerned enough to write you to let you know. Now what does that say about the evil Joe P.? yours, Joe Parrington ( who is such a racist that he and his fiancee spend their Sunday evenings delivering jackets and blankets to people living on the street, and without sounding racist, in acoma and Seattle, yes, alot of those people are BLACK. :( ------------------------------ Subject: Incognito, Hooks & Choruses From: Lolitaj @ aol.com Date: Tue, 28 Jan 1997 09:22:51 -0500 (EST) Hey All, Level 42 is my favorite band of the past, but Incognito is my favorite band that is still recording, so I want to comment on Elson's post from yesterday since I agree with him 100%. It is not fair to compare the two bands because Level 42 diverged into a more rock and pop oriented sound, so it is apples to oranges. The earlier Level tracks are much more similar to their sound, particularly instrumentals. A number of the songs on Incognito's JazzFunk CD sound like they could be on The Early Tapes, and vice versa. Anyone who is more into the jazzfunk/britfunk period of the band would like Incognito a lot, but if you like the more poplike stuff, they aren't for you. Like Elson, I am an acid jazz head, so I love them. As I said a few days ago, if you don't get their latest - Beneath the Surface - and you like acid jazz with good vocals or an absolutely slammin' horn section, you are really missing out. About the hooks and choruses thing.... I slightly disagree with the assessment yesterday about Out of Sight, Out of Mind, because although it has a great chorus, the verses are what got me into the song, particularly the bassline. The song really grooves through that part. The best hook (or should I say the best bassline through a hook or chorus) IMO is Lying Still, hands down. That song kicks butt!! The bridge is awesome as well (the future dissolves..). That is one of the most underrated Level 42 songs of all time. All of their instrumentals tend to have great hooks, and then they settle into the solos during the meat of the song. Also, during the solo section, Phil tends to focus on the ride cymbal, which is a great effect and really gets you into the song. I think he does this most effectively during Mike's keyboard solo in The Pursuit of Accidents. My favorite instrumental hook is 43, particularly the beginning. The song starts off with an in-your-face bassline that makes you pay attention to the song. Anyhow, that's my opinion. What are some of your favorite hooks? Post 'em! As I understand it, I am now a member of the 'all cleaned up' digest, and I must say that things look nice and clean around here. (cleaning it up, cleaning it up, I can feel it!) I've had a lot of catching up to do since my monitor suddenly began to smoke and smell worse than my morning breath and then, all of a sudden, it just died. So here I am looking at a brand new 14" monitor, although I kind of miss my old 15". The day of the 'monitor-death' I got AYGB (is this some sign?). It is really great. Thanks from the bottom of my heart to all of you who have worked so hard to get this project up and running. In the light of the playable songs category, we could also make a category of BEST ALBUM TO GET SOMEBODY INTO LEVEL 42. I think AYGB would be the best album in this category. It really shows Level 42 all the way, in every aspect. About the live disc: I really don't think that the NAMM show should be on it. And I do think 'Sandstorm' should be on it. I have a tape with a great version of the tune. With everything in it: scatting, great bass & drums. But hey, that's only my opinion. OK, well, I guess that's it for today! It's funny, I've thought about the Level42 Effect before, but never really articulated it...and now someone else has done it for me! I've experienced the effect with two albums- Staring At The Sun and Forever Now. I think it's because both records are substantially different in sonics, arrangements, personnel and style. I remember being very disappointed with SATS, liking a few songs at first (Man and Two Hearts Collide being standouts for me), but soon grew to love all the songs and the album itself. My experience with Forever Now was less disappointing, but similar. Now, hardly a day goes by that I can't play at least a bit of FN- I just _love_ the record. Songs that I tended to skip were the title, The Sunbed Song, Time Will Heal and LIAPW. Now, I think TSS and FN are killer tracks. I usually skipped TWH because of the hugely poppish opening half of the track- but at the last half it suddenly transforms into a full-blown genuine L42 effort. Now, I love it. I must admit I still tend to skip LIAPW, though. Even the Effect can't bring me around to that one...! Maybe if they funked that one up, dropped the stings and made the track, well, less sappy (sorry!), it would appeal to me more! Hah! A name for the phenomenon...The Level42 Effect... I love it! Flim and the BB's has to be up there as one of my all-time favorites, just like L42. I've got all the recordings, including an original, first-issue DMP Tricycle (one of the earliest CDs I ever owned, circa 1982-3 or so). It's a toss-up between The Further Adventures of... and This Is A Recording as to which are my favorites. Most folks don't know that these guys actually have played live a few times- I got to see them in San Diego (I think it was 1984 or so) on New Year's Eve, of all nights. There was this New Year's Eve jazz gig going on down there, and you could see all KINDS of folks playing in various places. Well, they were playing in this itty-bitty room, with almost NO ONE in it...! It was fantastic- we got ourselves front row and center, and just had a great time. Afterward, we got to yak with the band (no one else hung around!)... what a killer night that was. I've quizzed the folks at WB about any new efforts from the boys- but no news. -Jeff "I read the Digest.... every word...!" ------------------------------ Subject: Thomas Dolby Mixes From: Alexander Thomas Date: Tue, 28 Jan 1997 18:57:39 +0100 (MET) Hi all, several weeks ago someone (from LA I think) mentioned that he has rare mixes from Thomas Dolby on tape. I know that this one is hard to find though! STAMPEDE LEVEL 42 RCA/BMG c1991 741105-2 STAMPEDE: The title track off of the dynamic dual first 90's album, is geared to put you in a mad frenzy. This song harken back to a milkman's life on the Isle, back in the days of horse drawn carriages. "Please stay away from me, you know you never drank the milk that I put at your door, yet you still wanted more, I tried to let you know, that calcium will help you grow, oh oh, just like the tikes you know, poor brittle bones....STAMpeeeeeD heading for your house, you will never be the same again, Never fear the milkman at your door, keep on paying, and he'll return with more...." OVALTIME: I nice follow up to the band's title track. "sometimes the taste I get with other favourite liquids that I drink, never tastes the same. Ladeling with spoon and knives to open up this thing all up tight its true, too much glue for you, well I find the the pouch is open, I can't contain myself, if you surely knew you'd want some juice, Baby if you'd listen, you could see that you are missing, what I say surely is so true, well, I'd been drinkning all this Ovaltime, you might think that I'm so dry, if you look inside this bod o' mine, it will be there, yeah...!" HERBERT DAY: This song is about our friend Herbert Bean (aka MR BEAN) which dances in the video for this track. "He stands by the mirror, feeling like he's run around a thousand miles. He cries at the telly, seeing his ol orphaned shoe he purchased Monday, ay. Down by his local Tesco store, by the way it's too late, no receipt to show the lady, no more shoes today!" GET ME UP: A song about the ever-tardy Phil Gould. Well the alarm said to me, it is half past three, and the moon is out, cannot see the sun. I've gotta get it right, get up when it's bright, or Mark will break the bass upon my spine, ine ine. It's like, I've been sitting here for hours by the window, and like, at this great distance from it, when I still haven't seen any people or starchildren or micro-kids, you know... the machine just stops! And that sucks! B-H: Beavis, are you having another seizure? B: Shut up! I'm almost there and then, then my hero comes up to me and says, it's your last chance, you have to take care of yourself, and I say, hey man, why are you leaving and, take a look over there and I say hey woman, are you hearing what I hear? And and... B-H: Beavis, if you don't shut up I'm gonna kick your sorry ass... B: But Billy's gone and he was such a good man in a storm but the handsome rugged man is returning and I'm so tired of waiting and... [Whack! Slam!] B: Oh, sorry Butt-Head... hey, where are we? I'm tired, I think I'm gonna go sleep on my heart and lie still for a while... I just need some silence... B-H: Huh huh huh... You dumbass!
