However, like diamonds being measured in carats and not ounces, the "shitload" applies best to specific types of items. At that time, my roommate and I decided that one could have a plethora of cars, but one could only have a shitload of trucks. Or motorcycles. BTW, I have finally received replacements for all of my stolen CD's (took the plunge, and the $200 credit card hit) but having seen the voting on the most popular songs among our esteemed digesters, I'm still painfully aware that I've never heard a few of them, like "I Sleep on My Heart" and "Return of the Handsome Rugged Man", or whatever's different on that "other" version of FN. (I've been told that it's been on backorder for many months, and I can't get it) If there's anybody willing, a cassette tape would do for me... I just wanna know what they sound like. Lemme know. Shitloads of good wishes Ann P.S. What's wrong with "The Ape"? I kinda thought it was one of the better ones on Guaranteed. ------------------------------ Subject: Musicians' Tally From: "Randall Collins" Date: Sun, 5 Oct 1997 12:00:42 -0500 I have received about 23 responses from musicians here on the digest which is actually pretty good. I will have to sort out everything and figure out how to organize it all. I'll post it directly on the Digest since I don't have a webpage yet. Actually, my IP will let me have a page for up to 2 Meg free...hmmm, I'll check it out. It'll be a text only page. If there are any last minute entries, I'll take them but it's sort of closed now. Hopefully, I'll have this done and compiled this week. Right, then! Randall Venezuelan Beaver cheese? ------------------------------ Subject: Spice Junk ! From: "Andre Huijts" Date: Sun, 5 Oct 1997 20:11:51 +0100 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, can we stop spoiling precious bandwidth about those Spice Girls. I can't believe we are even discussing this crap "band". In their "career" they have so far sung live 1 time on stage, doesn't this say it all ? Please stop talking about them on a Level 42 digest, a band that was most known for it's musicianship and live performances, and was recognised by their collegues as great musicians as well. Just take a look at the number of musicians on this digest (no sadly I'm not one of them). At Rolls Royce nobody talks about the pros and cons of a Lada ! I have never asked to stop discussion about any topic before, but this is insane ! Groetjes, Andre "And so on...." I need to rid myself of the motto: "There's nothing a man can't do tommorrow". Music is my life. I started with the trombone in 5th grade then moved to tuba (my god, what was I thinking?) for a few months and then I ended up on the baritone sax for approximately 3 years. In the midst of the bari sax honkings, I discovered the drum kit. I have now been playing drums for around 12 years. I will be 26 on November 17th. Playing the melodic instruments, I feel, really helped my drumming. I believe that having "big ears" in a band situation is extremely important. Listening to the other musicians and playing *with* them really makes it work. I really appreciate high quality musicianship and production. I also respect musicians who actually take the time to learn their instrument and practce their technique. (Of course Level42 includes it all!) I don't think calling someting "ART" should be an excuse for laziness or incompetance. I am currently working with a band called GRUE here in Santa Barbara, CA which is kind of a progessive rock thing. Kind of like the later Rush stuff. (Counterparts/Test for Echo sound for you rush fans out there) I really learn a lot playing this kind of music due to it's use of odd times and various styles. But I have an incredible weakness for the female voice. So I am currently trying to start a pop/rock project with a female singer. Playing in GRUE is great for my playing but unfortunately there's not too much label intrest in this type of music. I love Paula Cole, Julia Fordham and Alanis Morissette (just to name a few) So I'd like to get something like that going. If there is anyone who cares to know more, please feel free to email me privately. (jos @ qad.com) To Will (WillOShea @ aol.com): I got my copy of Dominic Miller's "First Touch" at Counterpoint Music: http://www.counterpoint-music.com/ The owner, Brian Hamada, can special order it for you and you can email him directly at: info @ counterpoint-music.com Thanks, James R. I'm going to have to print those results up. Now, if you have the energy to follow it up, I think it'd be fascinating to see how much (if at all--and I'm sure it will!) it's changed in six months or a year. Cheers! I shall give those songs a fresh listen and consider a rebuttle. I suppose the "interpretablility" of Level 42's music widens their appeal. Eric P. - Great job on the survey, lad! But I didn't know that people hated "Don't Bother Me". I always liked that one and thought it was maybe about Crockford. But, as Phil wrote the lyrics, I tend to think it's about Mark! Does anybody know the story on it? Peace - Z. ------------------------------ Subject: who was running the CDROM upload site? Last, but not least, In Chicago, check out 93.1 >FM WXRT, in my humble oppinion one of the best radio stations on the >planet (Wide variety). As a Chicagoan, I completely agree with 93.1 FM, WXRT. Excellent music for intelligent grownups. Guitar Center always strikes me as a guitar grocery store... with lots of employees that haven't realized the 70s are over and are still wearing long feathered hair like the Styx, and shiny satin band jackets. Excellent selection though. A great guitar store is in Evanston (suburb just north of the city, 739 Main St. just east of Ridge, tel: 847.475.0855) called The Guitar Works Ltd. No attitude, experienced employees. -Lisa
