A bit quirky this -maybe- to savour the moment, when the effect has fully sunk in and gone and then to recapture it, simply play the tracks at different speeds! It works wonders for me. From: "Carl R. Mueller" > May I suggest the Palace Station Hotel for all us cheapskates ;-]. > Winston, you're a genius (ha!). Hey Mikey, what do you think of this > Vegas thing? Along the same lines, what does everybody else think? I think Vegas is a better locale thank OKC, no offense to the original organizers, but Vegas is one of the popular "Convention Towns" in America, so it seems to fit. (And besides, it's only a 250-mile drive from here :)) I would propose one major feature in such an undertaking: An L42 jam party. We would rent out some place and have digest (and non-digest) musicians play L42 cover tunes all night long, while the participants engage in one big sing-along. From a knight who says, "Nyeet!" > New Orleans has done a great job of being the 'offical' birthplace of > jazz...but if you REALLY look into it, jazz started right here in > Kansas City in the 18th and Vine district. Sorry, I took a class in Jazz History in college and it STARTED in the Crescent City, by the blacks (who had traditional African music backgrounds) and Creoles (who were schooled in the Classical music styles from Europe) of the city, and it started out more or less as African music played on European instruments. Kansas City was the birthplace of big bands (you could argue that swing music started in KC, but there are much earlier forms of jazz) and countless jazz legends, but it all started in N'awlins, years before anyone in KC played a blue note out of a horn. The "Birthplace" of a music genre is a vague term. For example, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is located in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, the supposed "Birthplace" of Rock & Roll. Was it a group of Clevelanders who first decided to play swing music with a harder beat? No, Cleveland was simply the place where a local radio disc jockey first used the term "Rock & Roll" on the air. So is Cleveland the "Birthplace of Rock & Roll"? Well, kinda sorta. > I have a couple of CD's by Incognito and somehow there tunes aren't > quite as satisfying as L42. L42 seems to have more substance. Hope I > haven't offended any IN fans but it's just my opinion. I've liked L42 longer than Incognito, but I don't think that's a fair statement. While the music they started out with was uncannily identical (I still think Incognito's "Parisian Girl" can pass for an unknown L42 tune...) Incognito perfered to stay within the soul-R&B-funk-jazz realm of the music, while L42 ventured more into the rock world, and other musical genres too. L42's approach created interesting results, but at times it was overkill - IMHO there were many songs from the "Forever Now" era that sort of slightly "ruined" themselves by seemingly straying from a straightforward funk mode (i.e. "The Bends") into something else. It's fine to do that, but not all the time. Or maybe my taste in music's changed. Too much acid-jazz, i guess :) > Totally classic funk. A greatest hits CD would be a good start. I write: I know exactly what he means. Several of the Level 42 CD's have had to grow on me. However his point about the groove vs. choruses is quite valid. I think the phenomena is called the "hook". I think Koko is saying the songs lack a commercial "hook". He may be right. In reviewing my CD purchase habit of the past year or so, I have found that I may not like songs with commercial hooks. In fact, usually the hook is the reason I start to hate a song. You listen to the song just so you can get to the hook!!! The rest of the song can be filler. I think that once you know the hooks, you stop playing the CD. You also turn to another station while in your car. About the only music I can listen to over and over again and again and not tire of the hooks are the early Beatle songs. Anyway, I think that some of the L42 tunes are "hookish" but not commercially so. The refrain in, Out of Sight, Out of Mind with, "Oh Regine, here am I.... so far away" etc. drones on and on. (I'm using drone in the good sense) This is my favorite part of the song and probably one of my favorite L42 songs. However, try getting that song into rotation!!!! I find that if a song relies too heavily on the hook, the rest of the song can take a back seat. Not so with Level 42. One of my favorite ways to listen to them is NOT to listen to what's up front, but rather what's in the background. Mike Lindup's and Wally Badarou's keyboards and synths are always there in the background swirling sounds around. I can pick out something new upon each listen. There is always a treasure waiting to be discovered in most of L42 songs. In fact, it's usually the verses and not the hook that gets this treatment. They are definately not "straight ahead" musicians but rather gifted craftsmen using the tools of their trade, painting intricate sonic pictures that delite the senses. IMHO, I think the Chinese Way falls into the hook trap with the refrain. I like the song a lot, but after a few, "The Chinese Way, who knows what they..." I've had enough. Too much hook. Lastly, I think that once a group concentrates on writing "nuttin but hook", they lose fans. How many of us liked a group from the early 80's etc and had many of the early albums. Then the music changed. We all used to say about our favorite groups, "Oh, they've gone too commercial" My theory is the dreaded hook disease!! There are many other quirks and foibles in the Polydor Master Tape catalogue, unfortunatly I cant print it on the digest or Id be strung up. But for instance, there are about 4 takes for each song. Children say is on World Machines, STRATEGY """DOES""" have an extra song (Piano). I think there may be some unreleased mixes. I will support any effort to have a large gathering of fans, as long as, it is being done with honesty and integrity to try to make it an event worth spending alot of $$$$$ on. The only advice I can give, through planning the OKC one is that make sure you get confirmations, contract, and all deposits applied and recorded and that the venue is CORRECT with accomodations and requirements of the services that you will require. They will try to give you all these extra options, they just want to sell you a bunch of crappy items that will push the price through the roof, do not be scared of being tact, and at times, quite rude, as YOU are the ones that are going/coming to the FEST, they are NOT! Date: Mon, 27 Jan 1997 22:20:45 +0100 Hi there all you Level-fans INTRODUCTION Let me start with a brief introduction: My name is Arjan, and I'm a new member of this great digest. I've followed the digest for over a year now, but while I had no Email-account of my own, I didn't write to the digest before. I'm glad that I can finally join in!! I live in the Netherlands, in a town called Purmerend, just a little above Amsterdam (look it up in the atlas!). I'm 26 years old, and an active musician myself. I've followed the whereabouts of Level 42 for over 12 years now. To be honest I gave up a little two years ago, when the band split up. I thought that I was one of the last hard-core Level-fans on the face of the earth. Well, thank God I discovered the digest a year ago. It really propelled my interest in the band to new heights! Thanks a lot Eric! I have a fairly big collection of Level-goodies, ranging from the obvious CD's to rare 12"-records and a few bits of video-material. Maybe when I get more into the digest I can sometime attribute some stuff to a new digest-cd... ABOUT THE DIGEST Here are a few replies on the digest of last week (my first week as a member) JOE... About all that Joe-stuff: let me tell you, I got tired of reading him the first day, so I never read his postings anymore. I hope the digest can return to it's normal subjects again, 'cause little Joe sure made everyone mad. I respect all the stated opinions, but please: NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT: A MAN WITH A TAPERECORDER IN HIS NOSE... THE LEVEL42 vid's I liked the way Mysterio71 @ aol.com described his first impressions of the L42 videos LAW and Level Best. Regarding these two videos, I have two questions: - Did anyone notice the way Mark almost tripped during the RITF-clip? It's when he sings "You're gonna have to face the music", when he seems to step next to the big "record-player"... He looks kinda surprised, but he recovers quickly... One moment later the moving part of the floor is even shown in close-up. - Does anyone know what is falling down on Mark during the bass-solo in the LAW-video. During the ultra-high-speed slapping part something small falls from the top of the stage. It has bugged me ever since I saw the video. Another question about that solo: when he's finished, Mark throws something into the audience. It looks like a plectrum, but that's really strange, as MK doesn't use one. Well, perhaps someone can gine me some interesting answers. THE L42-EFFECT Yep, nothing new here. But to be honest, I don't think it's a specific L42-thing... I can have the same kind of experience with other music or artists. THAT'S IT Well, I hope I didn't say anything that made others angry :-) Let's try to keep the digest as it's supposed to be: nice and family-like. I hope I didn't make too many spelling mistakes... I salute all Levelheads out there: "THANK YOU VERY MUCH CHIPPENHAM, FANTASTIC! GOODBYE!" (PP) Arjan. ------------------------------ Subject: Who's that girl? Lolita - What can I say, you are quite possibly the best writer of any of us, and YOU to have caused to add to my music stock. I want to take you, Winston, RJ, and the above humorous duo on CD/Tape buying sprees. I think it would be quite the adventure. Loz - I got your email regarding the Biography being in the mail. All I can say is a humble thanks. You are the British version of the Man. Your knowledge and insights make me shake my head as I am but an acolyte to your knowledge. You typing on the other hands convinces me that you need an accolyte to do it for you. Winston - Loz Lite, apparently, for what I can tell you have a killer collection of music that I'd die for. A mover and a shaker who helps get the list projects done. You're another Man. Sean 'Nursing Dude' - I won't say you're one of the men, but I will say that I'm really interested to see who won the poster Aug. 30th, you're running day to day commentary has been great. DJRJ - The Vic Wooten recommendation has elevated you to Supreme Being (at least on the list) and man, I would love to hear what your radio show sounds like, but with you in Tx and Ca it isn't bound to occur. How about a tape of part of a show? Zak - Another Supreme List Being, responsible for getting the Ts done, and while I missed out solely due to my own fault, I know there's people out there with a nice T Shirt, and boy am I jealous. Matt/Zaphod - You are whatever words that are descriptive of great- ness. Granted the CD-R project and AYGB was a group effort, but you're handling of the deal was what got the thing accomplished. I've sent money to you for AYGB and on tenterhooks awaiting its arrival, and now I will be a good citizen and send you some bucks for the CD-R itself. To the rest of you folks out there who've thought about helping out, yeah we've got the machine already, but he's out $150 bucks! C'mon, do the right thing and send him a check. That's only 9 other people besides me and we'll have Matt paid off. Bill - The Covers Tape man, I haven't heard this project, but I am on the waiting list, and drool over the possibilty of owning this. Bill you're too cool for words, good luck on Tape #2, I want one of those too. Tucker - Possibly the funniest man, intentional or otherwise on the list, someone who I'd like to meet, as long as I'm driving the rental car. Yeesh, scary description. Mark Vael - Are you still posting? I would like to go shopping with you, too. You are the Continent of Europe Man. Let me know if you're still around via email, and maybe we can do some business. I've not heard the 'Porky's Remix', but the Collector's among us rave about it, so if you have a copy.... Last amongst the people I'm shouting out to (to use the vernacular, which would again make me look silly), I have an admission to make. Thanks to Matt, he put a little bug in my bonnet and it caused me to cheat, so I looked at a recent digest. I have one question, who in the hell is this Joe Parrington fella? Talk about a mouthy, rude undesirable 'person'! my gosh, what has happened to our friendly list? I have no idea how long he's been around, but while reading this digest I was shocked by all the negativity throughout. I say, that if this Joe guy has singlehandedly brought the level (no pun intended) of this digest down into the gutter, then off him Eric! Harumph, enough preaching from me. Wow, this is really long, so I'll end it quickly.... If there is anyone who is a S.F. Bay Area list member, I live in Mtn View, and can direct me to a Store that has the 'Turn It On' or 'The Remix Collection' or Mike Lindup's 'Changes' album(s) on CD, please let me know. Oh heck, if anybody out there has any of these or the 'Level 42' CD or any singles they can get/own and are selling, etc. send me some email. And a special request...I don't know if any of you ever heard the late '60s/early '70s group Apollo 100, but if ANYBODY knows where I can find the album/tape/CD with 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' on it, well I would be eternally grateful. I was gonna list some of the stuff I've bought due to members of the list, but this is way too damn long and I've gotta stop. Hope I did not bore anybody. Now back to your regular reading, me I've got 5 months of digests to catch up on. Doug Email: Doug.white @ stanford.edu thebigdp @ best.com
