From: angelina rogero Date: Fri, 5 Sep 1997 11:39:47 -0700 (PDT) Hi folks, I'm getting the feeling that some of you misconstrued my question of if everyone on this digest can agree that they *like* at least one song. Some people have been stating their favorites seemingly in response to my initial post (or to Winston's post in response to mine). I know all of our absolute favorites must differ but I was just wondering if everyone could at least agree that one song didn't "suck" in some way. Saying that, I can now say that I'm the proud defender of the songs "The Chinese Way" and "Set Me Up." Perhaps lyrically they are not most profound but the music is great (IMHO) and I enjoy singing along. So I guess we can't say that either of those would be the ones that we could agree we all don't like. Also, we can't agree that "Time Will Heal" would be the one we all don't like since Winston does like it. I find myself unable to participate in the voting for favorite Level42 song since there are so many that I love equally that I can't narrow it down to three favorites in order. Ooh, I have a Level 42 dream too! It ocurred a few months ago. In the dream I had been chosen to be their backup singer on tour (a la Annie McCaig.) It was the ultimate. I went to Mark's parent's house (as if he still lived with them! heh..) to rehearse with Mike. We had a grand old time hanging out and singing together. I don't remember if I ever got to the part where I went on tour with them. Ah, what a dream! BTW, I don't quite understand why there won't be a digest mailing on Saturday due to Princess Diana's funeral. I thought the digest mailings were automatic. Maybe some won't want to read the digest in observance but why can't they just not open their mail that day? Well, anyway, I respect the decision Eric has made for whatever reason. Much love, Angel PS. Did anyone catch Jamiroquai on MTV Video Music Awards? Their performance was the best I've seen, musically, on an awards show in many years. It's amazing that a band I actually like a lot was performing and won four awards! ------------------------------ Subject: Fave Track & Stuff From: Roy Lake Date: Fri, 05 Sep 1997 20:44:14 +0100 Hi chaps I'm from South Ockendon in Essex, England and have been a fan ooh nigh on 11 years now!. Watching Mark play bass solo's at several concerts have completely knocked me out. I remember seeing their very last gig at the Royal Albert Hall and coming away feeling a complete sense of loss knowing that we were not going to see them again, and looking behind myself as I walked back to the tube station, I could see all those hundreds of other fans feeling the same way. Bit of a girly moment I know, but what the hell?. What's everyones favourite track?. Well, what a question!. Well, I have several faves, and heres why:- 1). Man - This song TOTALLY blows me away, it's like 3 or 4 different tracks in one!. The drums are excellent, the bass is orgasmic, and Mark sings rather well too!. The guitar by Al Murphy is almost heavenly, and what an excellent ending... hey man sing those blues!.. 2). Her Big Day - Take a second just to listen to that bass twang at the start of the track that lasts for about a second. You know immediately that this is gonna be a fabbo track, and what excellent lyrics!. The drums and bass really go well together, and this also is one of their strongest live tracks. A Real schorcher!. Reminds me a lot of the schorching day I spent at the Crystal Palace gig that only seems like yesterday. Ok, so those are my two fave tracks. But im gonna be a little bit nasty now as I slag off Starchild. This track REALLY sucks!. Now, I'm sure a few of you are gonna disagree with me, but I have always thought Mike Lindup's songs have been the weaker Level 42 tracks, and always feel myself "Skipping" them. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED Mike's solo album, and think West Coast Man is an excellent track, but as Mike sings so girly, and I can't hit the high notes myself, it's a bit off putting. Still, I have found that most of the female Level 42 fans I speak to prefer Mike's voice and think that Mark has (and I quote...) "A serious nasal problem" Hehehe..So, at the end of the day, it's all down to personal taste, and I am sure that everyone will agree with me when I say that it doesn't matter what song you like, or what song you hate - the fact is, there was and never will be, anyone quite like them. ------------------------------ Subject: Endings From: "Glenn, David" Date: Fri, 5 Sep 1997 09:19:00 -0400 Lisa -- you wrote about that haunting and beautiful ending to Lying Still. I concur bigtime. If that last note were to last five minutes, I'd still be there locked on and listening. And in my list of "fave" tracks from yesterday, how could I have skipped "It's Over"? Next to Children Say, it's the track on RITF I've worn out the most. Is it possible someone DOESN'T like that track? David G. Seattle ------------------------------ Subject: Milli Vanilla Spice From: Bruce_Conrad @ hphc.org Date: Fri, 5 Sep 1997 16:50:07 -0400 * rant mode on/ I was so bored/lazy last night that I watched all 3 hours of the Mtv video awards. OK, actually, all I wanted to see was U2, and they were boring (and I love U2, although I haven't bought their latest). Chris Rock (appropiate name, perhaps) was funny. (he made fun of a lot of the 'singers'). Mtv, true to form, featured many more 'visual' acts, rather than musicians. What's up with all the cRap and alterna-disco? Is it the latest trend to dress up like a horror film reject and scream over a disco song (Prodigy), or to dress up like a horror film reject and scream over a heavy metal song (Marilyn Manson-is he mentally ill or what?), or to remake a Police song into a Rap memorial (Puff Daddy). And, the Spice Girls (girl power!), they make me retch! Beck too! (what a loser, hehe) [no offense, Eric, he's not your cousin, is he?] Donald Trump said it best - Hansen blows! (Eric's brothers :) ) Congratulations to Jamiroquai for winning the best whatever video. The video was cool, although the song is kind of lame, although I do like it. Congrats to the Rolling Stones for leaving their nursing homes to make an appearance. what are they, in their 70's?? :) *rant mode off OK, i feel better now, that I got that off my chest. If it sounds like i think Level42 should have been up there getting an award, you're right!! {sorry for the off-topic stuff. there's just not much going on in LevelLand} Bruce Conrad, Software Control Analyst Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Quincy, MA www.HarvardPilgrim.Org "her Spirit is free" [I heard Diana was about to get married to Dodi?] ------------------------------ Subject: Tons of stuff--the 2nd time around! From: "Heather Swanson" Date: Fri, 05 Sep 1997 18:02:10 PDT Hi, all... You can't imagine my frustration. I'd written a masterpiece--'twas beautiful, indeed, and very lengthy--and my computer crashed!!!! Now I must rewrite it all. *sigh* It's in response to several things written an issue or two ago... MARIE-LOUISE: Your English is very good. Welcome to the list. :) And I agree with your fine taste, too...I *love* "Why Are You Leaving?" I can't believe I forgot about factoring that one into my list of favourites. WINSTON: What is "As Years Go By"? I feel out of the loop all of a sudden! CLIFF: Thank you for reinstating my touque and backbacon rights--but do I now get a stuffed polar bear or moose to compensate for the ensuing mental anguish of this persecution? :D JEFF: I suggested to Frank that he try ordering FN through HMV... That's where I (indirectly) got my copy, i believe... Good luck! ERIC: I completely agree with your "Time Will Heal"/"Peaople" comparison--that whole "Some people judge a man as reasonable/If the wine he buys is seasonable" thing is just plain goofy! I love Mike's voice & style (esp. on "Changes"--what an album--is it available on CD???), but he definitely veers over to the sappy side on occasion like noone I've ever heard before... :) MARCUS: Just wanted to write to express my admiration over your passion about the whole Diana subject. Well put. I agree completely. MARK: One song and one song *only* by Level 42 that I can hear, huh? Well...I thought about it...and I'd have to say it'd be "Hours By The Window". The imagery and depth of that song still give me chills. Phil is brilliant, so passionate. PAT: A "touque" is a big, heavy winter hat that a lot of people think we Canucks spend the year in! They often have those silly pom-pom things on the top, just to add to the degradation of being cold. :) LOLITA: Ah! "Set Me Up"! I thought I was the only one who hated that song!!!! ROBERTO: Thanks for the info on LFT's Canadian appearances... I figured as much. *sigh* I thought Canada was likable! Jeez. Anyway, you are hereby initiated into the Touque Club. :) Now for a general inquiry: A looong while ago, I heard that the version of "Children say" that appears on Level Best (the one featuring Boon's wonderful solo...*sigh* Anyone found a way to reach him yet? I'm still looking...) was done for charity. Every time it got airplay on British radio, it was said, a percentage of the royalties would be put forth to a kid's charity. Any truth to this? That's enough for me--again!--so TCOY.... The silence of a billion was so loud it was haunting. I couldn't help but recall 16 years ago watching a young 20 year old Diana @ the same place, walk down the isle to marry Prince Charles. They say, "Well, life goes on", No. Not today. The world truly did stop, to say goodbye to Diana. My condolonces to all that reside in England, who must feel the enormous crater of void and emptiness, wondering now how will England carry on without the Princess who defiend the New Modern Monarchy, who with savy and elengant style beyond words rolled up her sleeves and showed the WORLD what true love and compassion REALY is. My prayers are for the children, as we as a world, and England as a country have lost a great humanitarian, they have lost their mummy. May the peace the "passes all understanding" be in their hearts now and forever. Diana's death is the beginning of a chill the runs up and down the world's spine to remind us all of the things she jut barely began to do for the less fortunate. That talk is cheap, action behind it is where it all lies. As a woman, she defied the "night in shining armor" myth that all women are supposedly to live up to, she showed us as women that true love comes in it's right time, not when it's forced up upon us due to age and circumstances. She can share that true love in heaven now. At peace, at last. REST IN PEACE LADY DIANA, YOU WILL BE TRULY MISSED. Take care Levelheads.
