Hansen" Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 13:37:31 -0500 (EST) Good people, This message outlines the unsubscription of Joe Parrington. Please skip it if you've had enough. This morning, I looked at the Digest logfile and discovered that Joe Parrington had sent in an "unsubscribe" request to the list... voluntarily. I later found out that this request had been forged by another individual, and that Joe did NOT actually unsubscribe himself. Due to the automated mechanisms in the mailing list software, Joe nonetheless received a confirmation of this request. I then received email from him asking if I was going to re-subscribe him. Shortly thereafter, it was brought to my attention that several of Joe's comments to the Digest in the last few weeks have been considered racist (see Lolita's posting later in this digest). Upon consideration of these statements, and his original text, I decided to keep him unsubscribed. Racist remarks have no place here on the Digest; I will strictly and proactively enforce this policy. Period. This decision to ban Joe from the Digest has NOT been based on any of his messages' other content or "intentions". Despite the fact that I've received literally dozens of private email requesting me to ban him from the list (as well as MANY public requests), my decision to remove him was based SOLELY on his racist remarks. I also offered Joe the opportunity to post a final comment about my decision to unsubscribe him, and he stated that he would oblige. However, in the few hours that followed, Joe's email account was permanently closed because of unauthorized use. Apparently, he was using another person's account, and this is against the policy of the university. As such, I expect that Joe will acquire Internet access through another ISP, and at that point I'm sure he will be in contact. I will still allow him to post _one_ final message, but he will not be allowed to re-subscribe. If there's a good thing that has resulted from all this controversy, it's a revised and more complete set of list policies and disclaimer. This is in everyone's best interest, and should be read and understood by all. I regret having to post these AGAIN, but *PLEASE* review them. Hopefully this will be the last update for a while: ETIQUETTE, SUGGESTIONS AND POLICIES FOR POSTING TO THE LIST =========================================================== ::Etiquette and Suggestions:: - New subscribers should feel free to post an introduction message. This might include such information as when and how you got interested in Level 42, whether or not you are a musician yourself, where you live and what you do, etc. Learning about the demographics of Level 42 fans is just about as interesting (and occasionally moreso) as talking about the band itself! Plus, you might meet other fans that live nearby. - If you are going to post a question (especially as a new subscriber), please check out the websites listed below first. You may find the answers you're looking for. You can also try searching and browsing through the Digest archives. - Please keep quoted text from previous messages to a minimum. Quoted text should include the original author's name (and email address, if possible), and then be trimmed as much as possible to show only the relevent context. Do not ever post or quote an entire previous digest. - Last, but not least, please write a meaningful "Subject" line in your messages to the list. Many subscribers look for interesting Digest content by scanning the "Today's Topics" section at the top of the each issue. For this reason, if you are replying to a digest message (and thus potentially using the default "re: Level42 Digest" Subject: heading) please change it so that the subject line describes the nature of your message. ::Policies:: Failure to adhere to the stated policies is grounds for permanent removal from the mailing list. - Do not post flames or other purposely hostile messages to the list. This includes obscenities, racist and sexist remarks. The mailing list is provided soley for the enjoyment of its subscribers, and not as a vehicle for personal attacks, confrontations, or antisocial behaviour. - Do not post private email to the mailing list without permission of the original author. When doing so (with permission), please credit the author and show their email address. - Commercial advertisements are not allowed. These include any corporate offers posted to the list (i.e., by Internet/mailorder-based record stores) and messages by individuals who have targeted list subscribers as a "captive audience" to sell their products and/or services. - Public auctions are not allowed. Individuals who wish to hold private auctions may make one (1) public posting to the list to announce the auction, but all subsequent communications must be done privately, via person-to-person email. Hansen ................................. mailto:eric @ worldmachine.com Worldmachine Technologies ....................... http://www.worldmachine.com ------------------------------ Subject: Childish behavior, Chinese Lanterns, Viva Las Vegas From: Lolitaj @ aol.com Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 12:24:41 -0500 (EST) Hey all: I have been silent for a week due to a problem with my e-mail, so I just read the posts from this past week. Imagine my shock and surprise to find yet more flaming. I thought we were over this. I just want to say a few things: 1. I agree that the auction should be held off the Digest and only one post should be made about it, as Eric's disclaimer clearly states. It bothered me a bit to see all the back and forth and bartering, particularly because I know how many countless hours both Winston and Mike Payne have spent copying things and giving away material for nothing or at cost. I'm not suggesting that Joe do the same, I'm just saying that their opinions are equally as valid as his and they shouldn't have been dealt with so nastily. Something about this whole thing seems unseemly, but again, if he handled it a little better, people wouldn't be so bent out of shape. 2. That being said, why is this getting so personal? Joe has managed to offend far more people than he thinks, and I think that number of people is higher than the number of friends he may have made. I take EXTREME offense with his GHETTO comment. I, Winston, Tony Bassette and a number of other people on this digest are black, and although I never pull out the PC slogans of the '90s, I don't like hearing any unwarranted racial epithets or comments. I grew up in the ghetto, and I consider myself a fairly intelligent person who knows how to get my point across. So if I'm 'ghetto', what does that mean? Also, his comments a few weeks ago to Elson about using slang in his e-mail were equally offensive.. In the two years I've been on this digest I have never heard any disparaging racial comments until Joe came along, and now isn't the time to start. Calling names and evoking race is the sign of an inarticulate person, and if you have problems expressing yourself, either e-mail the person privately or keep quiet, but keep it off here. 3. My conclusion after reading his Parrington's Point nonsensical message of the 1/24 digest is that his childish behavior and incessant flaming of digest members is not going to stop. Therefore I say: KICK HIM OFF! The tone and the spirit of the Digest has been poisoned since he's been on, and I don't look forward to reading it like I used to. I'm sure many others feel the same way. If you do, e-mail Eric privately and let him know that. Obviously some people are going to disagree, but then we should discuss it openly. I just want people who feel strongly to have an outlet. 4. Joe, if you feel the need to be nasty to me as well, please bring it on. I know how to 'bark with the big dogs', and since you got a little racial back there, if you want to bring out the angry black woman in me, do so at your own peril. Now on to friendlier matters..... Vegas - I'm all for it. More to do, cheaper and easier to get to for everybody. Here here! Bela Fleck - I like him, but some find his stuff unbearable, and the bass isn't as prominent as I would like on some tracks. I do like him a lot though. Incognito - All you funksters need to check out their latest, Beneath the Surface. It is very good, and finally widely available in the U.S. Changes - Great, great CD for the person who asked. Is the rumour true about a new release from Mike? I hope so. Lanterns - Lanterns are Chinese as well as Japanese. As a matter of fact, there was a movie out two years ago called Raise the Red Lantern that dealt with a particular purpose for hanging lanterns (good movie - I don't want to give away the plot). Matthew was correct about the Mandarin/Cantonese language thing; my roommate is Chinese and her sister lives in Hong Kong so I got all of this verified. I hate the song the Chinese Way specifically because of the lyrics, not the groove, so I appreciate someone pointing out inconsistencies. I agree that the groove is good, though. See ya later. I apologise in advance for taking up space on this subject. And remember, these are just my opinions. I believe Mr. Parrington has the right to say what he likes to whoever he likes. I believe Eric has the right to administer the list as he sees fit. I particularly believe that if a posting is contrary to the "ETIQUETTE, SUGGESTIONS AND POLICIES FOR POSTING TO THE LIST" then he should prevent the posting from appearing on a digest. I also believe that ERIC ALONE has the right to remove a persistent contrary poster from the list. While I believe that we, the subscribers, have the right to deliberate, discuss and vote on any subject, I do not believe that we can vote a subscriber off the list. Smacks of burning witches, that. That's all from me. I really like "Heathrow", by the way. Particularly the saxophone bit. Come to think of it, I prefer the earlier sax parts to the later full brass section parts (eg. Joe, I agree with some of your opinions. But the way you state them makes me want to disagree. You see, presentation is everything, Joe. Which apple do you think the horse would want to eat, the clean and shiny one, or the one covered with shit? It's still the same apple, Joe. That's all from me on that one. Oh, Mikey, even though I probably won't be able to make it to any Levelfest you put together, I wholeheartedly appreciate all the work you're putting into it. I've put together things like that in the past, and I know what goes into it. You put a lot of work and sweat into things, only to have people who aren't involved in doing any of the work complain about things. Sometimes things go wrong that are beyond your control, and only the small-minded would fault you for that. You've contributed a LOT to this list, and you have my support and appreciation for that. In MY opinion as one of the 475? members of this wonderful digest, Eric as list administrator has and should have the ultimate power of deciding the "rules" of this digest. If anybody feels otherwise - feel free to start your own di gest. 2. I have no opinion on auctions vs. no auctions other than that I like people who are willing to give a fellow fan the possibility to experience something they otherwise wouldn't have, i.e. rare stuff. The lower the price of transferred goods the more people have a chance to experience these things. Anyway Eric has now decided *no auctions* so that's already settled. 3. Democracy doesn't justify all. IMHO there *shouldn't* be votes on shutting people out of the digest. The *only* reason I can think of for shutting a person out is if they deliberatly and repeatedly break the rules of the digest. 4. To all fellow digesters - LIGHTEN UP. We all like Level42 because they make us feel good. We all joined this digest to able to communicate in good spirit with others who feel the same way. It doesn't matter if you just read or if you contribute by posting, as long as you have fun doing whichever suits you be st. (I'd much rather have a digest with 25 posting members and 450 silent, than a digest with 25 posting members and 5 silent. :) ) Keep up the good work of spreading the music of Level42 around the world by sending each other tapes, keeping an eye out for items in stores, and burning cds etc. (I can safely say this since I know that most of us still buy all official releases available through the "proper" channels, so it can't be bad to spread taped copies of limited edition promo remixes). Well, those are my opinions. On another note I'm curious to know how rare my copies of the DAZZ4 (Sandstorm) and DAZZ5 (Love meeting love) 12"s are. Could all of you who own these records e-mail me privately at lo.larsson @ zeiss.se please. There's only supposed to be 50 or so copies of the DAZZ4, for instance, It would be nice to know how many of these belong to fellow digesters. I would also appreciate a private e-mail from any Swedish digestmember. Finally just a note regarding the subject of rare L42 paraphernalia. I have two really farfetched thingies. The first one isn't that rare but it's still funny - a double CD-ROM about endangered animalspecies of the world by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine featuring Douglas Adams as narrator. The title is 'Last Chance (!) To See'. The second one is a cd compilation of recordings of authors' voices which includes a 2-minute recording from 1954 of Hermann Hesse reading (in german) from his poem 'Der Dichter'. Green" Date: Wed, 24 Jan 1996 11:06:27 -0600 Dear folks of the digest, It has become increasingly more difficult to read the digest these days, as I am sure it is for many. Although we, as a whole, make efforts to scan over the unsightly and often uncomforting postings of a selected few, it remains ever baffling to me that all this has gone so far. I do not wish to name names, you people know who you are, and know exactly what I am talking about. The fact remains that all of this has gotten well out of hand. The insults that I read going back-and-forth are incredible!! I cannot believe that people who share such a likeness of musical tastes can behave this way towards each other. You people should be ashamed!! What can it be that is so important for you to take personal jabs, flames, degradement, and insults toward each other on a constant basis? It does not appear to mearly be a choice of defense at this point, rather, a basis of the top cut-down wins. When will this fight be over, I ask? To be offensive in what you say is not the same as stating a defense for your personal feelings. If one is going to respond to what another says, then at least be constructive about it!! If you don't like what someone says -- tell them -- disagree -- but by all means KEEP IT WITHIN REASON OF ADULT BEHAVIOR. Just because you people are using E-Mail as a source for communication, does not give you license to behave the way you are. I wonder what would be different if the lot of you (involved) were put in a room together. Would you discuss this situation as adults, or would someone start immediately swinging? Think about it! I believe it is quite incredible that the provider of this beloved digest of ours continues to keep it up. I know that it is bewildering to that person to have it turned into such a specticle of personal attacks, and I for one, would have just shut it down -- but it is not mine, of course. In conclusion, I hope that all on this digest will read this, and by all means, understand just what I am talking about. I believe it is time for some of you to take on a new role, as adults, and let this stuff get buried. It is not worth it, and there is no further point to be made. If you need to gripe about your position, then do it in private, or not at all. This is my digest too, as well as other peoples', and many are getting sick of all the crap that some people are offering -- but few want to read and relate to. Give up the personal shots and digs that some are trying to be so *subtle* about -- they are still considered in my book to be attacks. I beg of the people involved in this to let it go, and bring peace back to the digest. It is only being degraded by these remarks. Let's get it on the right track. Level Best wishes to all of you, Sean p.s. - Here's a test for those of you involved in this situation: Any person who continues using degrading comments towards others in their postings shall be deemed the loser. Anyone who responds to those remarks in a non-constructive and flaming manner will also be a loser. Come on people, let's not be a bunch of losers. I have faith in you all. :) ------------------------------ Subject: LeVagasFest From: Daniel James Organization: Mathsoft, Seattle Division Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 09:33:42 -0800 > I was just thinking about the now de-funkt OKC Level Fest and wondered > if those involved would consider another locale. But for the time being, I shall be unsubscribing from Eric's excellent (IMHO) Level 42 list. I have enjoyed it for nearly 2-1/2 years, but (obvious point here) that enjoyment has gone. Apart from the fact that simply accessing my Clemson account from Virginia is a chore and a half, I now dread going through the hassle and lag time just to see not just arguments and bickering, but out-and-out flames laced with cheap shots. The family atmosphere that I once held so dear is disintgrating before my eyes. Issues of the right to auction and profit from it aside, what of the rest of our rights to not have to tolerate tantrums? If Eric wants to bar flaming from the digest, more power to him. We should be thanking him for the public service he's been tirelesly doing for our benefit, not excoriating him because we don't agree with his policies. Likewise, if Eric wants to bar any for-profit activity, not limited to but including activity at the expense of Level 42, so damn be it. Again, it's Eric's call to make, and I for one trust his judgment. And that's all I have to say about that. I can only wonder aloud, where have maturity, manners and civility gone? As they have apparently taken leave of this list (if only temporarily), so too shall I. As always, take care of yourselves -- -- a heavy-hearted Amanda P.S. But, I feel that his note to Mikey42 about him messing up the levelfest was the last straw. I would accept an apology from Joe to all members of the forum within one calender week before I vote on his removal from the digest. I feel he should have some time to reflect on how it is such a privledge to have a digest available to fans of Level 42. Maybe a suspension could also go into effect until he apologizes. The new "auction rule" seems fair to me. I have no problem with it and it being personally between digest members will take some messages off the main digest. Mikey42 I just wanted to thank you for the videotape again last month. I learned so much more about the band and please do not listen to Joe P about the levelfest. We all know how much you and the others have done for this digest. I love you mannnn. I like the idea of having a levelfest in Las Vegas. For those who have not been to LV there is a lot to do. I have been there a few times and have had fun everytime. When you go I do recommend that you stay at one of the older hotles on the Strip. I have stayed at the Imperial Palace and it is acrosss from Cesars and Treasure Island. This hotel is nice and very inexpensive compared to the Luxor/New York, New York etc. When in Vegas who spends time at their hotel anyway. Just a thought if someone is starting to plan Levelfest L.V. From: ben @ flump.netkonect.co.uk (Benedict Poole) Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 18:56:29 +0000 Hi all I've just been listening to this song for the first time in ages. I thought it was appropriate, given that I was also reading digest #23... Certain people seem to be taking too much to heart, which is a very adolescent thing to do (note the spelling Joe! ;-) ) Now when's Loz going to come back to the fold? Is he sulking or just got nothing to say? Oh yes, back to L42: hasn't "People" got a great bass solo? Cheers! Right you are again with only a minor correction. Mandarin (Chinese) is actually classified as the commonest language, as you said, with up to a billion people in one general area. The most widely spoken language is English. It's spoken in more countries than in any other. Otherwise, you right on about the Chinese. Sometimes I wonder if the cultures of Japan, Hong Kong, and China have, at one time, shared similar interest and customs since, anthropologically speaking, these people are the same. Like your ideas about the L42 t-shirts. If you can organize that, kudos to you. One question though: I'm assuming that these shirts are short-sleeved. Have you considered including some long-sleeved t-shirts for us deep-freezed, ice covered folks living in the upper two-thirds of the USA? That would be...uh...cool. Maybe we can vote on what L42 design and/or logo to use. Hope I'm not starting anything here :) Me writes: Seems like the bickering and personal attacks are, once again, getting out of hand. I was thinking that it would be a "neat" project for some of us fellow musicians to write and compose a L42 type album. I know that Matt Logan, Zak Nillson, Winston Walker, and others can play synths, WE should all get together via e-mail and demo some of our idea out, and consolidate them together and form an album! I can sing in Mark and Mike range. I figure that it would be neat to send it to the band, as a way of saying thanks for the many years of music, NOW here is our way of "show you how I feel..."! If interested in writing a L42 type original album, contact me or call me. (405) 743-0153 Home If you haven't listened to a L42 track for awhile, I recommend take a listen to the song People, off of the True Colours album, I forgot some of the synth and bass solo's within, and after the many FLAMES we have had of late, it sort of puts things in perspective. Also, I want to thank those people who support and believe in me! It is ice to know that this family here is loyal and sincere. I will say however that if my actions or lack of action are ever called into question, please feel free to speak your mind with me, either personally or on the general digest! I am open to be critised, for justified complaints that are specific. In hindsight, which is always 20/20, I feel bad that I couldn't find a way to relate to JOE PARRINGTON, as we all need friends to support us through our rough and troubled times, I only hope that he can find a positive outlet to vent those feeling that either I did not understand, or that were truly mis-placed! I'd welcome him back in an instant, if he felt sorry and understands what has occured thru the past 3-4 weeks. I was wrong to post my messages yesterday, but inspite of anger and bitterness, I decided to let it on, as I had had enough. In future, I will react differently. Lessons in Life, let me tell you! But in all honesty, I really love the friends I have made on this digest and even though we are miles apart, I am there for you guys and gals, whenever you need me! YOU GUYS/GALS ARE FABULOUS! I wish I could hug and kiss you ALL! (mikey get sentimental, call out the national guard!) From: matthew rice Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 16:16:53 -0700 For those who didn't catch it yesterday, I am making a Level-42 t-shirt for all who are interested. Make no mistake, I will not auction them off for some ridiculous amount to the highest bidder. I am going to post the design somewhere and will submit artwork to the screen printer in the next two weeks. I have already had many requests and offers for help which I appreciate. For all interested, they will be high quality heavy 100% cotton t-shirts with a simple 3 or 4 color logo on the front and back. The shirts will be available in both black and white, and possibly gray. I plan on having the digest request url printed on the back, and if its okay with Vince I can also print the Level 42 homepage url. The t-shirts will be approx $18 but could be cheaper depending on the number of orders and leverage to bargain with the screen printer. This figures in all costs including shipping. I am totally excited about this, and will proceed with it in quick fashion. Within this next week I will have all the details worked out and a design or two to put up on the web. If anyone is interested, wait a few days and I will have you send e-mail requests to me. More details are forthcoming . . . Thanks. **************************************** Matt Rice mtr12160 @ statsun6.byu.edu **************************************** ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V97 #23 Subject: PARRINGTON'S POINT: If you are finished... From: gromit Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 15:38:06 -0800 Hmmm...can anyone else stand a post from the land of 'Lurkdom'? It's kind of funny lately, I was considering unsubscribinbg from this mailing list because I was not seeing anything of great interest to me. Then comes the 'Parrington vs. the world' flamefest. Now, I check my email multiple times a day just so I can see who called who what and who is a crybaby and who has progressed from crybaby to whiner. Please. I have learned much from the dialogue between list members here when it pertained topics about Level 42. I also learned that there are some neat people out there willing to go the extra mile to help others appreciate the group. (Zaphod, Loz, Eric, et al.). Even the posts about bass players and drummers (Yes, I'm one also) were interesting. But now things have deteriorated to international name calling and flame wars for all list members to see. I think the last straw that made me emerge from my lurker state was Parrington's Top Ten List from V97 #23. Joe...let it go. No matter how hard you try, there are times when people will just not agree with what you say, right or wrong. I feel that the original post that started all this was your free right to do, but you *had* to have known the torrent of ill will that it was to release. But, in all fairness, it was Joe's right to express his opinion. Just as the others on the list can express theirs in return. But we have gone from *opinions* to mean spirited, malicious insults. The idea of holding a vote to banish Joe from the confines of the mailing list is an interesting concept; however I feel that since this list is maintained by Eric, the decision should be his. But my take on the proposal for the vote is that it is more like a witch hunt. I guess, after all my blathering, is that we should just let it go... Move along. Get OVER it. I'll be returning to my lurkmobile now. Thanks, and take care... Mike Dutra ------------------------------ Subject: Joe, Resurgence FN finding From: angelina rogero Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 16:30:42 -0800 (PST) Geez! What is up with that Joe guy? How rude can you get? Wait, don't answer that. I didn't waste my time with the battle that ensued with him at the beginning of the year, thankfully, so I wasn't really in touch with his attitude until now. By his sarcastic top ten list I inferred that he doesn't like it when there are posts that don't include Level 42 material yet that very post did not include any Level42 related material. Duh. Then he just plain insults digest members by saying they are aliens. Who is the "pre-adolescent" now? (BTW, that is the correct spelling) Also, why slag off Mike for the cancellation of the Levelfest in OKC. I'm sure the many others (not me) are facing the fact that they took a risk on a guy they didn't know in believing that it would turn out as planned. Now they must deal with the consequence. In believing that Mike was on the proverbial up and up before why should it be difficult for them to believe him when he says the foul up WASN'T HIS FAULT. I'm also wondering why this guy has so much to complain about yet he doesn't unsubscribe. Anyway,Ijust had to speak my mind.... On to the band related material, Thank God. I saw the Resurgence Forever Now at the Wherehouse in Burbank the other day. It was at a reasonable CD price. They don't accept bidding either I don't think (hee hee). Just thought I'd let a southlander know about that in case they haven't picked that one up yet. Eric, BTW, thanks for putting a good title in my subject heading yesterday. I am barely figuring out how to use this email system I'm writing from and I couldn't rename it. We'll see how it works out today. Bye, Angel ------------------------------ Subject: The Omen From: N Collier Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 20:39:58 +0000 He's gone...he's gone...he's gone, but the Digest carries on... A red letter day in the history of the Level 42 Digest; Joe finally revealed himself to be the 'antiMark', showing the telltale '42-42-42' birthmark just above his hairline as prophesied in the Chapter of Revelations in the Level 42 biography. Joe has never ceased to amaze me. His personal attacks on people have been just appalling and beneath us all. But the most astounding and despicable thing has been the way he has tried to make himself look the 'good guy'. He has continually tried to convince us that he has been defending himself, that we started the abuse and the name-calling because we couldn't take criticism. Then he even tried to refer us to past Digests to back up these statements. (What's more worrying is that his propaganda almost worked and some people were accused of petty mindedness and bullying for censuring Joe). If you read the Digests he refers to, the opposite is patently the case. You can only draw one conclusion if you read his 'evidence' - that Joe is extremely unstable, bitter, self-righteous and downright unpleasant. I genuinely think that he may be mentally ill in some way (that's not meant to be a term of abuse, but a serious observation), it's the only way I can think to explain his extraordinary behaviour and slanted view of events. In which case, we must feel sorry for him. These quotes surely are not those of a sound mind: > Do the wise thing and put me back on the list. >For one, I have addresses of almost everyone that posts (from all of my >backlogged mail) and can easily send them my posts >once they find out that I have been removed, there is going to be an uproar >It is a tacticle error for the Digest. Mark my words, I'll beback on the Digest >in a week. >Eric Hanson cannot silence the support from the many people on the Digest that >are in my corner. If Joe still has friends on the Digest, as he claims, then it is my sincerest hope that they will not furnish him with future issues of the Digest. I'm sure his thinly veiled threats are hollow statements but who wants to take the risk - do not aid and abet this person! BTW, here's my favourite Joe P quote of them all, remember this one... >my theory that the majority is ALWAYS wrong shines brightly All the people who Joe has attacked and upset over the past few weeks, I would like to reassure them that they did nothing wrong and urge them to keep posting, they are worth 1,000,000 Joe Parrington's.
