(2) From: MORGAN 42 Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 13:34:14 +0200 LATEST NEWS Mark has sold his home and studio in Wootton on the Isle of Wight and moved elsewhere on the island, near Sandown. Recent projects have included writing and playing bass for Matt Goss (previously of Bros), and working with Robert Miles in Italy for Joe Vannelli. In fact, it may be on the same label as Robert Miles that Mark releases some solo work, as he is currently negotiating a deal with them. It does, however, seem likely that the album will not be ready before the end of the year now, unfortunately, and so Spring 1998 seems much more likely. As soon as the album is completed and released, Mark will definately be doing some live shows, and these still promise to feature Boon on guitar. The other musicians in his live band are unknown at this stage - Gary Husband has been approached for the position of drummer but it is by no means a guarantee that he will take this offer up. Mike Lindup has been recording various pieces for two separate projects he is currently working on. One of them is a series of piano pieces for a solo instrumental album, and the other is for a band project of his own. Gary Husband has been recording with Steve Topping again recently, and is currently on tour with Gary Moore. Jakko has recently released a new c.d. entitled 'Road to Ballina' on Resurgence Records, which includes Mark King on bass, Gavin Harrison on drums, and also Gary Barnacle (sax.) and John Thirkell (trumpet). The album also includes the documentary he did for Radio 3 about his parents which, incidentally, he has picked up a couple of industry awards for. The Live at Wembley c.d. has sold in excess of 50,000 copies across Europe, and whilst Paul Crockford has no immediate plans to release the Royal Albert Hall live show, it is still on the cards and will appear sometime next year. The Polydor re-issue program is starting to advance, and hopefully within the next few weeks we will be able to publish the proposed track listings for each of the albums here on the internet. Special thanks to: Ian Buck and Paul Crockford. Also, as of this date, CHANGES is the only Lindup solo album. Pat, I caught that VH-1 special on Milli Vaniili, and it was very, very well done. It really is shame what happened to those guys, because they didn't set out to fool the public, it was the producer. They were promised that they could sing, and then they got screwed and hung out to dry. What was hilarious though, was the perf footage of them on the CLUB MTV tour where the backing vocals got stuck and one of the guys ran off stage embarassed!! I couldn't stop laughing!! :-) Shuf, last I heard the re-releases will be happening next year. I think Crockford mentioned that in the Vegas Levelfest greeting. I also would like to hear what the deal is with the whole CLAPTON thing, or is it just rumour. Roberto, thanks for the canadian Mark King Interview. That's all for now... I agree 100%. When I first got all my BobC tapes two years ago, I went through all the live performances and I was happy with many of them, especially the early ones, but the one that knocked my socks off is the 1989 Prince's Trust. The song that still gives me chills is the one Will Downing sang. I had never heard the boys do a pure R&B song before [they backed him up on Free, which is originally by Denise Williams]. Will is considered one of the best R&B singers out there, so it was a real treat to see this. Mark looked like he was having the time of his life, and he was awesome on the song. It sometimes makes me sad when I hear it, because I realize how great they are and yet how few people in the U.S. (especially soul/R&B fans) know them. > While I'm at it I might as well submit my opinion in the great 'Tired Of > Waiting' debate. And the vote from the Barnehurst jury - Nil points. > Sorry, I think it's the worst track on the album! (That's not to say > it's not a good song, just not one of their best! (IMO again!)) This song is simply there, IMO. It doesn't bother me (like Set Me Up and Chinese Way), but in my mind it is a bit of filler. There really isn't much going on musically that stands out, but it isn't a terrible song, either. Worst song status for Forever Now, hmmm. I have to think about that. I could do without Don't Bother Me. The end is OK, but that beginning kills me - I hate country music and it sounds very much like that. It seems that Mark likes country music, since there has been more than one song by him influenced by that genre. I heard a song by Jakko that I liked, and I think it's called Just Another Day. I didn't expect to like it, so I was pleasantly surprised. Is that the name of the song, and if so, which CD is it on [Winston, you were there. Do you remember?] Lolita ------------------------------ Subject: Hi yall From: RMGridge @ aol.com Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 10:11:08 -0400 (EDT) Hi there everyone Been reading all your comments, and had to get involved. First I think technically speaking Holdsworth was the the most proficient,at one gig in London Mark called him the dog's bollocks ! He wasn't my cup of tea I preferred Alan Murphy, but Murphy regarded Holdsworth as one of his heroes. Tired of Waiting I think is one of the strongest on the album,it was going to be released as a single. And yes they did do a cover of "sunshine of your Love "The old cream song in 1991 in Holland. On another note yes Elvis may be long gone just like level 42 but quality lives on,a hundred times better than the garbage that is being produced today where the current trend is to rap over old records because they "the artists" (NOT) to qoute wayne's world, have run out of ideas. Well, now I know exactly what you find irritating, thank you. It's funny, the things that drive you guys nuts are exactly what I like! Oh well. But you're right--that's > one helluva performance by Mark on bass, and Phil's not so bad either! Aargh! I had serious brain gas that day, thanks for the clarification. > Take a listen to Clapton's "Bad Love," either live on 24 Nights or > on Journeyman. Imagine what King would have done with that bassline. That would be a monster. Unrelatedly, I always really liked that song, but I HATE the way that Clapton's guitar sounded. Really solid-state sounding, now that's what I call whining! > 2) Road to Ballina with Jakko and Mark King--I e-mailed Resurgence > about it, but never heard back. That was last week. I think Seven Years is my favorite AH solo, it's like taking your eyes off the road for a second and all of a sudden finding yourself on a 45 degree embankment! Also, nice to see another UK fan, what a monster band that was. Bruford and Bozzio; both incarnations were great. I hear Wetton's still got an incarnation of UK going, do you know anything about that? I just saw a Bozzio clinic, this man is frightening! Who else would tune a drum kit pentatonically? -Marc ------------------------------ Subject: Steve Topping, Jakko, my collection From: lo.larsson @ zeiss.se Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 18:22:23 +0100 Morgan, great info on your page! By the way, Ian Buck are you still on the digest or were you just on for a little while? The name of the album with Steve Topping on guitar, Paul Carmichael on bass, and Gary Husband on drums was originally due to be relased in June. The bassist has a set up a homepage for Steve, but the info hasn't been updated for a few months. The name of the album is "Time and Distance". http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~paulcarm/SteveTopping_Web/SteveTopping_home.html Also, I am too a proud owner of the "Road to Ballina", and can agree to most of Dans review from yesterday. The music is very esoteric, with cello as the predominant instrument. A word of warning thus: It is NOT guitar-oriented. Mark King and the henpecked horns can be heard for approximately 39 seconds in the middle of track 8. The snippet you get is just a jam. Musically it says nothing, really. Still, it's a fascinating story about Jakkos family ties. The documentary side of the album is that interwoven with the music throughout the album are interviews with Jakkos real mother, his adoptive parents and a few friends and relatives. The interviews have been edited to "fit in" with the music, so sometimes the spoken words become instruments in themselves. This means also that if you're looking for an Enya-style album it's a bit to verbal. Oh yes, I got my copy at http://www.ab-cd.com Lars-Ove Larsson ps. I've set up a webpage with my Level42 collection - one page with stuff released under the name Level 42, and one page with related stuff, solo things and such. Also, thanks to Lazlo for the info on the M reissues. <> ------------------------------ Subject: Fave Songs, JM, Reissues - Mix From: matthew rice Date: Thu, 28 Aug 1997 02:43:19 -0600 I've listened to 'Master Series' and AYGB at work for the last week. My two new fave L42 songs are: 1) You Can't Blame Louis 2) As Years Go By I have no idea why these were not hits. Further, I have no idea why 'As Years Go By' was not an album track on Guaranteed. It is easily better than almost every album track, except perhaps 'Seven Years'. Other CDs in my current rotation: Joni Mitchell 'Hits' and 'Misses'. I highly recommend both albums. IMO she has the best voice of any female musician, and Tori Amos and all the other wanna be Joni Mitchells are just plain pathetic compared to her. She is Bob Dylan with an actual voice and sense of musicality -- as good a lyricist but 100X the singer. A final L42 thought: As I listen to L42 more and more I keep feeling as though Boon was always buried in the mix. It would be nice on the forthcoming (?) reissues if they would turn him up a bit. I feel like L42 lacked a little balance on WM and RITF - just not enough Boon and a little too much Mike. Perhaps someone in contact with Crockford or Polydor (LOZ? Ian Buck? Morgan? Joe Parrington?--just kidding) could pass on a wish list for us as they compile these reissues, seeing as how we will as a group be making tens of thousands of dollars worth of purchases of said reissues. ______________________________________________________________ | Matthew T.
