Hansen" Date: Thu, 23 Jan 1997 14:30:55 -0500 (EST) Subscribers, the following is an updated statement of "etiquette, suggestions and policies for posting to the list". This text appears in the "welcome" message sent to all new subscribers, as well as on each Digest's web page. Note that a new item about auctions has been added. ETIQUETTE, SUGGESTIONS AND POLICIES FOR POSTING TO THE LIST =========================================================== - New subscribers should feel free to post an introduction message. This might include such information as when and how you got interested in {Level 42/Go West/Incognito}, whether or not you are a musician yourself, where you live and what you do, etc. Learning about the demographics of {Level 42/Go West/Incognito} fans is just about as interesting (and occasionally moreso) as talking about the band itself! Plus, you might meet other fans that live nearby. - Please do not post flames or other purposely hostile messages to the list. The mailing list is provided soley for the enjoyment of its subscribers, and not as a vehicle for personal attacks or confrontations. - Commercial advertisements are not allowed. These include any corporate offers posted to the list (i.e., by Internet/mailorder-based record stores) and messages by individuals who have targeted list subscribers as a "captive audience" to sell their products and/or services. - Public auctions are not allowed. Individuals who wish to hold private auctions may make one (1) public posting to the list to announce the auction, but all subsequent communications must be done privately, via person-to-person email. - Please keep quoted text from previous messages to a minimum. Quoted text should include the original author's name (and email address, if possible), and then be trimmed as much as possible to show only the relevent context. Do not ever post or quote an entire previous digest. - Last, but not least, please write a meaningful "Subject" line in your messages to the list. Many subscribers look for interesting Digest content by scanning the "Today's Topics" section at the top of the each issue. For this reason, if you are replying to a digest message (and thus potentially using the default "re: {Level42/GoWest/Incognito} Digest" Subject: heading) please change it so that the subject line describes the nature of your message. This is a fairly long post, but I think it may be in the interest of readers to go through it all..... Now then, this auctions thing appears to be rubbing agianst some people. As it happens, I would prefer to see a price listed and then enter the first come first served arena. That said, I am currently in the bidding process for one of the things Joe has put forward (his or otherwise). Perhaps joe will be making money from this, especially since a lot of the stuff seems to be promo and therefore likely to be free. ALSO, that fact that no price was originally attached to it means that the price it will eventually sell for is the price people are WILLING to pay for it, based on how badly they want it. If it gets out of their price range then they can pull out (as indeed I may end up having to). JOE, er, perhaps it might be wise not to slag people off too much. Remember the state the digest got into after you posted some of your thoughts at the turn of the year. Admittedly (as I recall) people slagged YOU off for your own opinions, which you replied to in a similar way. I just don't want the dust kicked up again. ******** EVERYONE ******** May I suggest that you consider how you express responses to peoples' views. If you have a point to make, then say it, but put the facts forward rather than slagging the original poster off. I guess people generally take offence at this. If you consider the bidding process amongst fans "immoral" or wrong for whatever reason, you can of course say so. Those who wish to get their hands on the items up for grabs must decide for themselves IF they wish to enter the process. This is my personal stance. Let's try to keep things under control!! In fact, most airlines offer "junket" flights that are extremely cheap. Plus, Las Vegas has a huge plethora of hotels and meeting rooms! It might be harder to coordinate to do it there, but I think everyone would enjoy it more. No offense, Mike Payne, but I've been to OKC many times and there's just no comparison for things to do there as opposed to Las Vegas. OKC would definitely be cheaper, and probably more personal, but Vegas is definitely easier to get to. Heck, maybe we could take a break and go see the Wayne Newton show. I hear its the best in town! One thing that has always bothered me about the song are the lines (I'm going to paraphrase): "Cross the mountains, to Peking, where paper lanterns gently swing" and later: "My eyes wide open, I feel the breeze, words softly spoken, in Cantonese" As far as I know (being another geographically illiterate American) Cantonese is only spoken in Hong Kong and some of the Chinese provinces in Southeast China near Hong Kong. The people of Beijing/Peking (in Northeastern China) are overwhelmingly non-Cantonese in dialect. The language of choice for the majority of Chinese (upwards of a billion people) is Mandarin, making it the most widely spoken primary language. Phil should have said "words softly spoken, in Mandarin". What would he have rhymed with this? I'm sure that the reference to Cantonese in this line is because of Phil's birth and very early upbringing in Hong Kong, which is a Cantonese speaking country. In addition, I believe paper lanterns (and associated paper folding arts such as origami) originate in and are practiced primarily in Japan. I could be wrong about all this . . . Also - if anyone has dealt with Esprit Records UK mail order business and can vouch for their reliability and honesty, send me a private e-mail. This digest seems to have become some kind of a battleground. Instead of a community with common interests we have to put up with insulting personal remarks towards people who don't even know each other. If I recall, in the first posting, John (EMIKATIE) did not mention anyone's name. It was a generalized remark. But it seems to have been taken in an insulting way. I thought this was a place where we could openly share our thought and feelings about a band (and anything related) that we obviously are passionate about, but instead we have to watch as people's thoughts and feelings get shot down in flames. No wonder why people don't post as much as they would like to. I do admit that I don't agree with the auction...as someone in yesterday's post stated we are not here to make money off the boys, but enjoy what they put out. I really think that it could have been handled in a better way. Perhaps a trivia contest, first come first served...whatever. But who is to say that I am right. And, Mr. Parrington, you are right, this is America ..where people take advantage of those who are less fortunate than others..or to capitalize as you so eloquently put it... Maybe EMIKATIE John's mommie should have broken down and > bid on something for him. Oh well. It's past DEADLINE. Sounds like someone else is doing the pouting. I have only seen people get this uptight about defending their position when they are guilty of something. This small excerpt shows the lack of tact and personal integrity displayed more than once by our friend Joe P. To begin personal attacks on someone simply because they disagree with one's methods is beyond childish. Had Joe P. taken the position of simply saying "To each his own" would have been nice yet at the same time would have probably been asking too much. I applaud those on the digest such as EMIKATIE who, like others before him, have had the position of helping those who can't get certain items because of location or other circumstances. I have in the past helped other digest members and others have helped me as well. Although the free enterprise system that Joe has brought up is quite valid, and that the highest bidder should get the prize, I would say that this digest has not been an auction house on many occasions in the past. For those who have bid, I am baffled by the $35.00 for a single. If it was autographed, maybe. I don't know EMIKATIE, but my guess is that he is a bigger man in which such words will not hurt him. As the saying goes, sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me. Sadly, a few small words damn near destroyed Joe P. I expect the same sort of treatment from Joe however I will not respond as it is unnecessary. So, Joe, enjoy. I felt compelled only in this situation because of the pure mean-spirited attack which was more than uncalled-for. For those new to the digest, rest assured that this does not go on with any regularity. I do not represent the digest, but am happy to be a part of something in which a large majority are here for the right reasons. - Jerry ------------------------------ Subject: EASY! I have for years. Last year, Nigel? & some others designed sold a nice t-shirt for digest members but I didn't have the cash to buy one. This year I have a job and more money, so I decided to design my own and give the shirts as gifts to all my Level 42-fan family members and friends. I have contracted a good t-shirt screen printer and am trying to acquire some hi-res scans of album logos to use (Pat? Winston? Morgan? Zak? Anyone with good hi-res scans of album logos?) I have put together a budget and costs for the project, and it is ready to go! THE DETAILS: The t-shirts will be high-quality heavy 100% cotton in black or white. The design will need to be simple, 3-4 colors, and something that looks good on black or white. I did some searches of previous digests and it appears that there was significant preference for both black and white shirts during the last t-shirt project. The preliminary costs for the shirt are based on a pocket size 3-color logo on the front and a full size 3-color logo on the back along with a url/address for the digest or homepage (with permission from Eric & Vince of course). Cost: It looks like it will be about $18, which includes the cost of the shirts, set-up (based on the number of colors and complexity of the design), printing, and shipping. This is based on a 100 shirt order - if there are less it will be more expensive and if there are more I can bargain with the printer to reduce the cost. I will continue with this whether there is interest or not. I have wanted a cool Level 42 shirt for a long time and now is the opportunity! Don't e-mail with orders yet! I am still trying to acquire hi-res scans of album logos and designs. If someone will give me a little help, I will post a preliminary design somewhere for people to see. You talk about people not respecting your opinion, while you don't respect anyone else's, when it conflicts with your's. What the heck is up with your constant rants, while others try and post in a calm and rationale manner. Why must you insult people, and keep picking on Eric, like this is somehow his fault? No wonder people lurk, and don't post. You auction off items to the higheest bid, for Kim, your friend. Kim took herself off the digest because she was tired of reading our 'PUNK' messages? She sure doesn't have a problem making money off of the same digest members, does she? As you stated, Hmmmmmm I think anyone has the right to auction stuff, but I don't feel it fits in with the sense of family or community that this digest has. If she paid more for an item, then perhaps she should state the price she wants, and leave it at that. Bidding DOES NOT insure the item goes to the person who wants it most, just the person who can afford it at the time. Most on this digest trade, barter, and give freely, and it's obvious that these things are reciprocated. I like that. That doesn't mean everyone has to feel the same, not everyone does. I feel bad taking postage from members, because i am able to send things from work at no cost. So I don't do it. That's just me, and my opinion. You don't have to like it, but I hope you can respect me for having one that runs contrary to yours. I really enjoy your posts regarding the albums and other things, but I'm really getting tired of your personal attacks on others. Is this really necessary? I think Emikatie [what does that mean anyway :-) ] had some good points, and I don't think he was rude about it, or insulting. Please take this in the spirit I wrote it, an opinion, and not a personal attack. But if you must, go for it, I'm a big boy now, and can always take constructive criticism well. From: Michael Payne Organization: Oklahoma State University Phys Plnt Date: Thu, 23 Jan 1997 14:21:36 -0600 I felt, due to some, confusion, I needed to clarify a few items on LEVELFEST! Not because, JOE P., is forcing me to, but to let you know what is going on, even as you read this: I am trying to work out a package deal, that will include air, lodging, food, t-shirt, everything through a promotion PR firm that handles these do's! The price they quoted me was $500 per person, which I thought was great, considering all it covers! The reason, AS I STATED BEFORE, was not my FAULT, rather the hotel chain changed management at the convention centre, and my deposit was never applied to the account, but returned with a canceled contract, that wasn't even due until 02-03-97. So, I did what I could for this to go off in June. It hurt me, more than anyone, as I have put LOADS of work into this project, sometimes neglecting packages and our personal time to get some of these items confirmed! I decided rather to postpone it until late fall, or early next year, as I wanted to get more participation from the UK (mainly Crocky) and give people more time to save for a trip of this magnitude. I wanted it to be "an event" not just some hotel meeting room with chairs a keg of beer and a poor stereo that has no bass in it, I wanted it to be an event that would pride itself on all of us and give the respect and dignity that it deserved! I PROMISE, that when it occurs, it won't be some half-assed affair! For those fans, as JOE P. claims, are mad at me and upset, I can only apologise, but understand the work that really goes into a project like this. It is really easy for JOE P. to be critical of me for letting people down, yet another for him to take the initiative and do what I have done! LAST NOTE ON JOE P: As you can tell, I am boiling MAD over this piece of broken bass string! I am not blowing my own horn here, but I feel that I have contributed more to this digest, along with countless others, to try to help others expand their knowledge and collections of L42. I have been very lucky to have the connections that I do, but I have always made apoint to SHARE my material, FREE OF CHARGE, with the asking for return postal money! I admit, I have been lacking on getting all the packages complete, as I was again not prepared for the large volume of request that I received. I did this out of the goodness of my heart, as I wanted people to feel the same way that I felt when I saw/heard some RARE stuff! JOE P. when I look on what you have given to this digest, besides headaches, anger, and degrading everybody and everything, is NOTHING! YOU HAVE NOT GIVEN YOUR TIME, YOUR SINCERITY, NOTHING TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THIS DIGEST OR THE MEMBERS WITHIN! So I say to you, before YOU ARE GONE, that in life. "PUT UP, OR SHUT-UP!" The album was reprinted after a long absence ONLY in Japan to my knowledge. I found it on one of my annual biz trips there. I've found alot of old 45's of Nik at used record stores in Japan (and some Go West as well), so evidently he made a nice splash back in 1984. The catalog number is "MVCM-18536" (MCA-Japan) and it cost 1800.Yen, which usually imports at about $25.US. Try Sound City CD importers in Seattle, USA. They do alot of Asian business. Their phone number is 503-654-2196, open 11a-9p (Eastern Time). For those of you in the New York City area, some tickets are still available for the four shows my band, Rockapella, is performing at The Bottom Line (4th st. and Mercer) this Friday and Saturday, 1/24 and 1/25 at 730 and 1030. The opening act is the Bacon Brothers --- Kevin Bacon (Yes; the actor) and his brother, doing a sort of guitar-folk thing (and yes; they do sing rather well). Come see me sweat my ass off for your listening pleasure. All shows will eventually sell out. Rockapella is an a cappella vocal band --- no instruments... just great singing (and spitting --- I'm the vocal percussionist as well as a singer). If you think that all sounds dubious, check out our website at http://www.rockapella.com and you'll see otherwise... And by the way, we hope to sign with Imago within a few weeks, which oddly enough means Level 42 and I will be almost label-mates... now there's something I never would have thought of ten years ago... --Jeff Thacher ------------------------------ Subject: Jamiroquai concert & LeVelfest From: angelina rogero Date: Thu, 23 Jan 1997 16:52:48 -0800 (PST) Hello everyone, I'm back from lurking as if anyone noticed. I just wanted to know if anyone in the LA area is going to the Jamiroquai concert at the House of Blues on Sunday (the 26th). If so you will be there with me! Let me know! Also, Winston, yes I'd be interested in a Las Vegas Worldwide Levelfest! You know I'm one of those lucky Californians. It's out there folks.. FABFRI ------------------------------ Subject: Auction & Vegas Levelfest From: jreddin @ juno.com (Jennifer L Reddin) Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 00:12:23 EST Hey all. Well, after reading today's digest, I decided that I needed to abandon that safe and quiet place we all like to call 'lurkerdom'. Winston: I think that's a great idea to have a Levelfest in Vegas this summer instead. Anyone else? Mikey: Sorry to hear about all your hard work going down the drain on the OKC levelfest. That's really too bad. I was looking forward to meeting others who didn't make it to the Texas Levelfest/Roundup here in Dallas last year. Eric: BTW, did you ever get the photos that were taken at Tucker's house of all the attendees of the Texas Roundup put on a web page somewhere? Just curious. Joe Parrington: Please, please let's not go through this finger pointing again. I agree with others that the auctioning of Level 42 is inappropriate in this forum. I understand that there is nothing illegal about making a profit; however, you must understand that we have a helpful, family atmosphere here. (It's really unfortunate that you have been unable to experience this.) For example, would you ask your brother to pay $30 for a cd that you bought at $20? I hope you answer is 'no'. Also, I believe someone here has a web page where people can specifically place L42 items for sale (and profit?). I think it belongs to Mark Hughes (sorry Mark, if I'm incorrect here.) TCOY, Jennifer Home: jreddin @ juno.com Work: jennifer.reddin @ pfs.sprint.com [re: Texas Levelroundup... I did get the photos developed, but haven't gotten around to scanning them in yet. And on the same topic, I haven't scanned the photos from the Boston Levelfest (II) from last summer. I'll make a posting when they're up on the web! -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Tucker From: WJGreer @ aol.com Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 01:04:02 -0500 (EST) > And WHO KNOWS TUCKER HASS !!!??? I think it safe to say that we've lost Tucker. Strange, too, if you ask me - sure, the guy changed jobs and all, but so have a lot of us over the past few years. I don't think anyone's heard from him. Where are all those North Texas people, anyway? Personally, I myself have been lurking for quite a while. I haven't heard from Jennifer Reddin (probably because I owe her a tape - Jennifer, if you read this, do you still want it? Don't you have AYGB now? Should I just tape some other stuff for you?). Even Zaphod has been a bit mute recently. I guess we're all busy. But Tucker has clearly fallen from the face of the Earth. -Will ------------------------------ Subject: PARRINGTON'S POINT: If you are finished...
