Bill Miller Ha! dirk.vael ------------------------------ Subject: Level 42 song From: EMIKATIE @ aol.com Date: Sun, 17 Aug 1997 10:19:04 -0400 (EDT) Greetings, It's my turn to mention the strangest place I've heard Level 42. It was yesterday, Saturday. I was completing a triathlon, temperature was in the high 20's C. and the humidity was around 95%. I'd been at it for around 1:40:00 or so and was fairly beat. I'm nearing the end of the run and I hear in the distance, "Lying Still" off World Machine. The sound system was blasting the song over the crowd. I obviously got a surge of energy and kicked strong to the finish. I then sucked down a large bottle of water and just enjoyed the remainder of the song. It really took the pain away from my effort. BTW: I finished 5th in my age and 30th overall. (out of 450). In keeping with an "all Level 42 content", I have, for sale a new sealed copy of Level 42 - Level 42 CD. Polydor 821 935-2 West Germany, which I believe is their first and is obviously a "must have". All of you who enjoy their non-vocal tracks must have this CD. Anyone interested? I just checked out a website in California and you can spend $20.00 + shipping. I need $14.00 including shipping. (My cost). Anyone interested? The machine stops. I'm in Denver again and happy to be here. Things are great with my new company, I'm challenged and busy. I hope everybody is doing well. Randall sez: At the time I enrolled at the University if Texas in 1988, I was a cello player. At first I was a classical performance major on that instrument. I had already begun to play a lot of bass, though, and soon I made that my principal instrument. Ultimately I majored in finance, but I continued my studies in Jazz performance as a bassist. Between cello and bass, I have about 70 credit hours in music. So, I'm one of those "cross trainers" you're talking about here. > It was 3/4 scale, according to one of the sales people. The vast majority of double basses are. The full-scale ones are just so big, few people are large enough to address them properly. I think Stanley may use a full-scale,and for some reason I remember that the bass player for the Stray Cats did too. > I noticed that it, as well as cellos, are tuned like your standard bass > guitar, I think. Well, an acoustic bass is tuned just like a guitar, but a cello isn't. It has strings tuned in fifths, not fourths like guitars and basses. The lowest cello string is a C, then a G, then a D, then an A. > My question is this: How many of you bass players out > there can play a double bass or cello? I would imagine the approach > to it is different. It is different. The physical differences are obvious, right? You sit with a cello between your legs and you stand next to a bass. But beyond that, since the scale on a cello neck is much shorter and the strings are thinner, it's easier to play quick, "virtuous" passages on the cello. Basses have these big thick strings, and it just plain takes some elbow grease to get them moving! In fact, the rosin (the tree sap used to make bow strings sticky) is very much more gooey for a bass bow, because you have to get that sucker sticky! Anyway, a cello is usually more suited to solo playing. Bear in mind that I say that as a man who truly loves the bass. > I would also imagine that it's easier to pluck the > strings as opposed to bowing them. The only thing about bowing the bass is that the bows are so short. They are short because the player needs to apply a lot of downward pressure to the strings to get them moving. A longer bow gives you a longer moment arm, and makes it harder to get that downward force. Anyway, with the short bows that bassists use, you have to move it back and forth so many times to play a long note, you feel like you're sawing the thing in half. > I know that Stanley Clarke and John > Patitucci can do both (Mark King too?) I doubt that Mark is a cellist. As you know, he came up as a drummer, not a classical player. It's a different circle. :) -Will ------------------------------------------ Will Greer Empower Solutions Denver, Colorado (303) 888-7154 Will_Greer @ empowersolutions.com ------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Subject: Our "Men In Black" From: "Eric J. From Fareham, as well.....have we ever met??? I was at the Tertiary College from 88-91. Duran, Level 42 and Queen were my 3 big bands whilst I grew up...surprisingly, John Taylor and Freddie had more to do with me picking up bass than Mark. May be hard for some to believe but there you go. John's use of Kubicki Factor basses was the reason I bought one as opposed to trying to copy Stu Hamm, who doesn't use them any more. I've got enough Duran stuff to sink a ship although the current stuff is dreadful or at least what I've heard of it is. Speak to you soon, Mike ------------------------------ Subject: Re The USA!!!! From: bmiller @ abbeywood.com (Bill Miller) Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 08:49:11 +0100 (BST) To all Well I have just returned this weekend from 2 weeks in California and Nevada, and all I can say is WOW, all you lucky digesters who live in America, you have a beautiful country!!!! 4 days in LA, including accidentally driving through Watts trying to find my hotel, 4 days in Vegas ($29 a night at the Sahara Hotel and Casino!!!!) including winning $3000 (The number 14 on roulette was particularly friendly $25 on it and it repeating another 2 times in a row!!!! YEEEHAAA and a $620 win on a slot, paid for my holiday!!!!) and 4 days in San Fransisco, what a beautiful city and clothing so cheap!!!!! Levi 501's £25 amazing!!!! But that West Coast road Highway 1, absolutely breathtaking!!!!!. Everybody my girl and I met was so friendly over there and the food is incredible huge big boy portions and so cheap. I also toured some of the record shops in SF and LA and I see what you mean about L42 stuff, it isn't that easy to get out there at reasonable prices!!!! But the Virgin Megastore had 3 CD's that I have been trying to get for 3 years and I found them all there (Company, Five XI, and Mint Condition) So to all you guys in the USA, I will be going again next year and until then I will stay green with envy. Oakland Athletics vs Chicago White Sox and It was the first time the A's have beaten the Sox this year. We really got into it.
