Randall, I don't know if you received my e-mail, but my stupid aol account deletes all messages after two days, and I hadn't printed out your address yet. In other words, I need it again. I'm sorry, and I promise I'll write it down as soon as I read it. Also include your phone number so that I can call you when the tape is definitely sent. Thanxalot. From: winston.walker @ wathneltd.com Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 9:00:32 -0500 Hey Royal, the footage you were referring to, with the guys in bow tie playing "Tie A Yellow Ribbon", comes from the Play At Home series of shows. I believe that the guys are performing on the Isle Of Wight ferry. Pretty neat show, if you ask me. Also did you notice that the live concert footage that follows seems to be taken from one of the gigs where they recorded some of the "Physical Presence" tunes? I noticed that they are wearing the same clothing as pictured on the "Physical Presence" album cover. Tcoy, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: England back on From: "Bowman, Brian J. (McConnell AFB)" Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 10:02:42 -0500 My fellow LevelHeads, Forget the details ... the bottom line is I'm going to be heading to England after all. We fly to Dover AFB (arriving late evening) on 15 Aug. Every night thereafter through the 19th, we will be staying at either Mildenhall AFB or Dover. We're also making short (4-6 hours) stops in Ramstein, Germany and Aviano, Italy. (For those who don't know, I'm a civilian PR guy for the Department of the Air Force). Do any Digest members live near Dover or Mildenhall? My time will be tight, but maybe we could work in a beer somewhere. It would be great to meet one (or more) of the faithful. By the way, are there any out there on the Digest who live in Italy? I'm probably going to be there for a couple of weeks late in '97. Also, I finally got a copy of Resurgence FN. I would have rearranged the songs in a different order, but it's a very good album -- overall better than the BMG/RCA version. My question is this -- how in the world can Learn to Say No be left off of any version of that album (it's not on BMG/RCA)? That song is cool. My vote for Billy's Gone, however, is the BMG/RCA version. And whoever it was that said MK looks constipated on the back cover was right on (couldn't they have picked a better shot?) A BIIIIGGGG Public thanks to Chuck Roehm of Tampa, Fla., for hooking me up with the FN cd. That's above and beyond, bro! By the way, Pat Flanagan won my Guaranteed not-for-sale-promo cd. Hope to hear from some UKers (Sooner or later ... maybe tomorrow :-)) Brian Bowman ------------------------------ Subject: The Snake... From: Jason Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 08:43:00 +0100 I stand corrected. Looks like most of you saw a snake after all (guess I need a new TV)! How about this one then; does anyone else think that Mark's last "Hey yah a-a-a-a-OOOH! in "Heart on the Line" sounds EXACTLY like Robert Palmer? I'm really not trying to cause problems; I just tell it like I see (or hear) it! By the way, favorite parts in Fait Accompli vid has GOT to be the MK bass solo during the sound check and MK and AM warming up with RITF. Very cool, and those two parts alone are worth getting the video for! Jason M. He plays guitar like much like his hero Holdsworth i.e. lots of well-controlled vibrato, runs that are more like what a saxophonist would play rather than typical guitar-hero fare, and he sings. His solo album "Mustard Gas and Roses" is excellent, but I haven't been able to find "Road to Ballina" yet (somebody help!). Now I'll be stepping on toes here, but to me (and some others here), Jamiroquoi is a disapointment, I can't help thinking that we already have enough Stevie Wonder as is. But I have to admit I haven't heard all of their stuff, I saw a concert on MTV that was dismal, and some videos that were cool but far surpassed tha music it was laid over. Worth checking out but try to minimize your $ investment until your feet are wet. Hey Winston, I know what you're saying, Boon's playing is much more... what... well, he played more solo's and stuff earlier on. Still, I don't think he had the vocabulary (guitar-wise) or the technical prowess of either Murphy or Jakko. He was the MASTER of controlled rythym at all times, however. When I saw him at Toad's Place he was a perfect contrast to Mark, visually and sonically. Though sadly, Toronto radio has now become "Americanized" (i.e. formatted based on demographics - age, race, wealth, musical genre), this wasn't so in the early-to-mid eighties. Thus, "The Pursuit of Accidents" established Level 42 in a big way here in Toronto (it was played on a few stations). We didn't have to wait for "the big hit" to learn who Level 42 was. This probably explains why older Canadian fans (I'm 32) of Level 42 kind of resent the latter years (post Running In The Family). To us, True Colours was when they hit their stride, World Machine exposed them to America, and then they forced things (as Rob Base said, "could be the fame, could be the money"). "America was calling me, you said I must choose" - to leave our roots. Therefore, a sophisticated pop sound emerged (and pretty good at that), just as Nirvana and Pearl Jam "grunged" upon the scene. The boys were roadkill. I think if they could have continued as a lower profile band (original members), playing Pursuit/True Colours/World Machine type of music, we'd be buying their 16th or 17th album right about now. As much as I love Something About You, it signalled the beginning of the end. But I digress. I saw them three times in 86-87, here in Toronto, and must say that at the Madonna concert (July 4, 1987 - CNE Stadium), I saw the largest banner ever unfurled for an opening act. Was anyone else on the list there? Mark sat on a stool with a huge cast on his leg, but got up at one point and tried to dance while slapping his bass. One day, I'll have to scan my photos and send them off to the Home Pages. Two months later (Sept 12, 1987 - Maple Leaf Gardens), Boon was already gone (I have photos from there as well). Thanks for the kind words about Toronto. We have the wealth of most large US cities, without the insanity. And we have some of the culture and civility of European cities, without paying a king's ransom for CD's, gasoline, etc. And as an infrequent poster, I'd like to thank Eric for maintaining this list, and the regulars for their informative contributions on many different topics. Cliff Barua - Toronto ------------------------------ Subject: Nik Kershaw's sort of 'Easy' From: "Julian Arnold" Date: 7 Aug 1997 13:03:32 -0700 Dia dhiobh a chairde!, Thanks to Marc Dupuis I have a copy of 'The Works' and 'The Riddle'. I have to say that MK's Bassline is an absolute knockout. Probably around 1984 or so (Marc?) if you haven't heard it do try to get a hold of it. It's brill. Also other tracks on there that Mark didn't play on are pretty sophisticated. Nik was something of a Bassophile I think. Just listen to 'Radio Musicola' if that's a real Bass Guitar then my hat's off to the Bassist. Rob Steen!, how are things man? haven't seen you around a lot lately. Settled back into the home land after Boston no doubt. I too was majorly annoyed when I found they had left the Gresham (tch!). Don Z. had asked me a very good question. I remember reading Rob and another gent based in London I think, visited the Bass Centre after word came out about Mark King's 'Garage sale' of sorts. The question was about who on the digest has an Alembic bass or two, and I add who has any of Mark King's gear, if so please do spill.. Does anyone know where I can get my hands on any L42 CD Singles? The only CD Single of theirs I own is Overtime. I want to get 'em all to complete my collection and enjoy all the neat versions of the songs. WWW.AB-CD.COM had a bunch listed a while back but when I called they were all gone. I've combed through many shops on the internet, but no luck. Any help would be appreciated.
