They had an album out at the time called House Called Love and I have it on CD...GREATTTTTT!!! They were made up of two Scottish bands, Hipsway and Love and Money. They didn't do much after that album. I managed to get a few singles but they just disappeared. The only down point of the Crystal Palace gig was that there weren't any lights of note...just a red and a green lamp at the back of the stage and the show was over by 20.00. And it was only and hour and a half show.....I remember being left with two tickets that I got a fiver each for from the touts.......several hundred people now gnash their teeth in unison.....sorry folks, email wasn't around in those days! From: winston.walker @ wathneltd.com Date: Mon, 28 Jul 1997 9:22:58 -0500 Hey folks, in response to Randall's question about how often we listen to Level 42: I usually fill my CD case on Sunday with 24 discs to take me through the week at work. I usually throw one L42 disc in the bunch to take me through the rough spots. It's obviously having an effect on the woman I share my office with, because she sings all the songs. She also commented on how much she loves Mark's voice. :-) Zaron, yes Paul Harcastle is the man behins 'The Jazz Masters", BUT I know he did 'Rainforest" quite a while before he started the Jazz Masters. I don't think that you would hear his lastest stuff and know it was Paul Hardcastle. I think all American cities have a 'Smooth Jazz' station. It's like a disease I guess. The local NY staion, WQCD (CD 101.9) is playing the same stuff. When they started they played swing, straight ahead, fusion, etc. Now they play all 'smooth' sounding stuff. And they seem to play any artist, as long as they have a slow song. I mean, would you consider Luther Vandross, Boys To Men, and Mariah Carey as jazz? I sure as heck don't. Oh well, what can you do? Maybe start you own pirate station I guess. Life's good on this end. How does it feel to play one of Mark's basses? Zaron: Good luck with the Peter Cox Grassroots Movement. It's a labour of love (having done the same with 42). I'm skint at the moment (got a wedding coming up in 6 days), so I'm going to pass on the singles. BobC: I'm still going to get back to you Winston: Do you still want a tape of M/Leisure Process? From: Elson Trinidad Date: Mon, 28 Jul 1997 15:28:51 +0000 >> Oh, you guys must get this CD: James Taylor Quartet "In the Hand of the >> Inevitable" It's a couple of years old but this CD kicks ASS!!!! > I like Alison Limerick's vocals, and the floutist > (flutist? whatever) is really good. Free Your Mind is my favorite song, > with Keep it Together a close second. What other JTQ CD is great? Eric? > Elson? I definitely agree with "Inevitable." My CD is a sacred piece of acid jazz memorabilia -- I got James Taylor himself to autograph it! He was in Los Angeles in 1996, I saw his show, and met him when my band played for the afterparty. He told me that he "Really enjoyed" my band! :) Anyway, do check out "Supernatural Feeling," which has some real smooove acid jazz with vocals courtesy of Noel McCoy. I also recommend the two New Jersey Kings albums, released on Acid Jazz records (titled "Party At The bus Stop" and "Stratosphere Breakdown"), which is really JTQ under an alias (don't believe the BS in the liner notes about the NJK being this obscure 70s American funk band...) > BNH are (let's all say it together...) the Bomb. I have loved them since > Dream Come True came on BET in early 1991. I've seen them with N'Dea, > but unfortunately I think she was drugged up or something - she still > sounded good anyway. I'd be curious to see them with Siedah in concert. > My favorites are Brother Sister (the song), Ride in the Sky, BNH and > Stay this Way. I'm actually singing the song Brother Sister at my gig > in a month. "Brother Sister" is their masterpiece. Even better is the European version, which has the 4 of them posing on the front, not the one with the picket sign and people covering their faces. The European version has a cover of "Midnight at the Oasis" and drummer Jan Kincaid singing "The World Keeps On Spinning", a real nice soulful housey-type track that somehow conjures up images of modern city skylines and models walking down fashion runways (that type of house tune :)). Siedah Garrett is an excellent singer, and is one of the few who have N'Dea's range and tone, however their new album "Shelter" lacks that 'spark' that N'Dea gave...Ms. Davenport has a knack for great melodies, which is sort of lacking on the new album. > I am a big fan, and out of all six commercial releases, the first two CDs > sound the most like Level 42. The first CD, JazzFunk, will remind you > of The Early Tapes a bit A bit?!?! Play "Parisian Girl" to a L42 fan (who doesn't own any rare material) and you will successfully convince them into thinking it's a rare L42 track. Even the french vocal chorus sounds like a young, out-of-tune Mark King somewhat. Elson ------------------------------ Subject: The Strangest Place & Radiohead From: Kara Tomlinson Organization: Urban Decay Date: Mon, 28 Jul 1997 18:03:17 -0700 Hello all!! I know that we have all ready talked about the strangest places that we have heard our beloved band.. but I just had to share this story... A strange thing occurred today here at my office. One of my coworkers is Croation and is always looking for anything Croation on the net.. and lo and behold he found a site that had a broadcast of live Croation TV..(using Real Audio)...So we went to check it out.. We happened to turn it on to the Croation version of "Wheel of Fortune" and it was just about over.. We watched it for a bit (like we had nothing better here to do at work!).. And as the credits rolled at the end of the show.. They played "heaven in my hands"!!! I almost fell out of my chair.. Mind you it was the Muzak version.....How can you not know that those beginning horn notes and the wacky bongos were not the creation of Level 42! It was brillant.... On a non-Level 42 related post: has anyone here picked up the new Radiohead "OK Computer"?? Well, I must say it is nearly the most perfect CD I have ever heard.. If you have heard their previous album "The Bends" this is nothing like it.. I can't even describe it...Beautiful Kara.. Now Playing: Babble-The Stone ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V97 #208 From: JazPhreek @ aol.com Date: Mon, 28 Jul 1997 22:11:28 -0400 (EDT) So when are we gonna have a SoCal get together? Hopefully, it'll be before I get too immersed into school... Anyway, I was just listening to the "Turn It On" Cd and I could not for the life of me figure out why some of these songs didn't make on the airwaves. These songs jam! If you all want to here some really good bass playing, check out both CDs by the group Count Basic which feature Randy Hope-Taylor of Incognito fame. The man has some fast fingers! Also, I just aquired a CD called "Dorado" which is a compilation CD on the Dali record. There'sa a song called "No Time for Change" by the group Outside. Man, the bass work is sweet. It's an acid jazz CD circa 1993. Some of the featured artists are: Jhelisa, Giant Step NYC, Sunship, et al. It's a good CD if you're into the acid jazz scene. Speaking of acid jazz, that JTQ CD ITHOTI is the best I've heard from them.I couldn't get into that 60's sound from the Money Spyder or Mission Impossible. That stuff in no way makes me wanna groove, but I'll have to check out the others that were mentioned if I can get my hands on them. I listen to the "smooth jazz" radio station here in San Diego and I was thinking, I remember them playing "Children Say" and "Silence," but why not "Gresham Blues?" That song should've made the airwaves on any jazz station. That is a real powerful and heartfelt song. Perhaps it wasn't jazzy enough, but I've heard them play Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Chitlins con Carne" and that song is all blues. I think a lot of L42's earlier stuff could make the airwaves of any jazz station today. Well enough of my babble. Ya'll take it slow. ...Be Strong for the friends you've known... Paul
