I know somebody who can offer me cheap color prints, but I need the files for that. I don't want to annoy myself if printing it 20 times before it's the right size. It may be postscript, although PCL is fine too. thank you! Nice to meet you here. My nickname is Sattel and I study on the famoust BAUHAUS to DESSAU/ Germany civil engineering. I'm 24 years old and since 1986 a great L42- fan. In this meaning I'm a "young" l42- fan and I have some questions to U. Can anyone tell me how I come to Marks Pub on the Isle of Wight/adress? Is there anyone who have some pictures of Marks family? In an music- dictionary I read 2 years ago, that L42 after the WM- album in '85 seems so idealess and "bloodless". It means there was no- more funky sound and so on. I disagree with this opinion. The author select l42- aera in two parts, the funky one '80-'85 and the poppy one from 1986 'til 1994. In your opinion which was the better time??? Which lastest News you have from Mark and Mikes solo- projects???? TCOY Sattel " Answers on a email please, I'd like to know what U believe...." ------------------------------ Subject: Back to the future? From: "Bowman, Brian J. (McConnell AFB)" Date: Thu, 3 Jul 1997 09:16:12 -0500 My fellow LevelFreaks, To Paul (jazPhreek) who wrote: > "...remember those kick-ass songs like Mr. Pink, 88, Why are you > leaving? ... the newer music doesn't come close to the old stuff." For me, the "Forever Now" album is in many respects a return to the sound Paul and many L42 fans love in the old albums. Songs like All Over You, The Sunbed Song and Romance are, for me (an admitted non-musician), very reminiscent of that sound, but updated for the 90s. Yeah, Mark's bass isn't all over the place on the album, but sometimes less is more if the other pieces are worth listening to. I think Forever Now is the album they were trying to make when they came up with Standing in the Light (don't get me wrong, I like SITL). In 1983 (SITL release year), Forever Now would have been radio-ready. I believe Phil Gould is the reason why the sound shifted back -- and not just his drumming. L42's songwriting process suffered greatly without his influence in the Staring at the Sun and Guaranteed albums. Indeed I think the Forever Now effort (I only have the "short" version with 11 songs) is one of L42's best albums, which makes their demise even more disappointing. As for all that pop music you, I and many others tire of -- take heart. With crap like that on the radio, it's only a matter of time before some record company entices our boys to get back together and make some money showing people the way "it used to be." Think I'm crazy? The Eagles said they'd never do the reunion thing, until they realized people would pay $80 a pop to listen to them sing songs they couldn't hear on hit radio anymore. Of course, L42 probably won't come to America. The 300 or so American L42 fans are on this digest -- not enough to cross the big pond. OK, I've pontificated long enough. I'll end with a question. Has the Digest ever had its members rate their favorite L42 albums. I think the results of that would be extremely interesting, given the range of styles the band has went through over the years. What do you think, Eric? Is it worth the effort? Mother Nature must have put a curse on me, Bo [there's been several such surveys over the past [wow!] nearly four years of Level 42 Digest... it seems to be a cyclical sort of thing, and will probably come around again sooner or later (or possibly starting with this message!) Other interesting "surveys" have included general subscriber bios, other favorite bands, albums, concerts, etc. I even seem to recall a short thread on favorite cigars... =) -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: a tip? From: "Steve Allert" Organization: MCI Date: Thu, 03 Jul 1997 09:32:38 -0500 Ann, Sorry to hear of your troubles. This may not help, but I've found it to work in the past..... Contact your local USED CD STORES and tell them to expect a group of Level 42 trade-ins. Tell them you just want to recover (rebuy) your discs...not find the theif. Most likely, they'll keep an eye out and hold the discs for you. May/may not help. StA ------------------------------ Subject: Bye Bye... From: The Bassman Date: Thu, 3 Jul 1997 16:17:25 +0100 (BST) Well howdy folks For the last 'don't know how many' years I've been reading and contributing to the digest from my Uni email account. Sadly I have now finished my degree and must also say goodbye to my free internet access. My email and website will no longer exist from sometime today (friday). I have to say that I have been forced, largely because of this digest, to buy a modem and get myself an ISP. I just couldn't live without all these discussions (a _sad_ nutcase you must agree!). When I have sorted things out I'll post again. ####################################### What this all means is that the thumbnail site for the CD-ROM project will disappear for a bit. I know people have forgotten about this anyway as nothing seems to have been put on the FTP site for ages! I will let you all know when things are back running..... ####################################### For now then, bye. I'll catch up with you all soon! TCOY, Mark. London stuff. From: Katie Livingston Date: Thu, 03 Jul 1997 11:35:49 EDT Greetings from London, where lots of Level 42 stuff is available in new and used stores. You guys who live over here don't know what it's like for an American to browse your record stores. :) Anyway, I saw a used copy of the Master Series cd, but I can't remember what it is...worth picking up while I'm here? I also found a used lp of Changes for 2 pounds at a Camden shop. I'm trying to put off major purchases until just before I leave so I don't have to schlep them all over Hampshire. Thanks for any input y'all can offer. Vacationing in the UK (and enough of a dweeb to be checking e-mail), Katie ------------------------------ Subject: You'll see! You'll see! You have to buy a pretty nice car tape deck to get even Dolby B. To get Dolby C, you have to get a high-end deck like a good Alpine, Sony ES, Eclipse, or the like. > You are kidding yourself. If the highs are not good enough, than your > deck sucks or get yourself some _good_ speakers. Speakers are very important, no doubt. Overall, I agree that the speakers are the most important component of a stereo rig (I have Magnepan MG-10s with one Phase Tech PC-50 sub for each). But, when you are strictly talking about the quality of reproduction from a cassette tape source, the biggest limiting factor is not noise reduction and not speaker quality. It's the quality of the tape head (the magnetic surface that touches the tape and interprets the organization of the magnetic particles on the tape into music). Most tape heads in mass-produced tape decks are aluminum or something, just not high quality at all. If you go into a Circuit City or Best Buy and look at the specs for most of the tape decks they sell, you'll see that that tape head ususally is not capable of reproducing anything above 15,000 Hz, and has a signal-to-noise ratio of 85 or below (good tape decks can do low 90s on SNR, and good CD players go well above 100 - Hi-Fi VCRs, incidentally, usually get up into the high 90s). If your tape deck has a very high signal-to-noise ratio, it means that the music will be much louder in comparison to the tape hiss and other electronic "noise", so the need for noise reduction is less to begin with. This is why Hi-Fi VCRs don't come with noise reduction - they really don't need any. Anyway, even tape decks that are loaded with features, like auto-reverse, timers, kitchen-sink cleaners, etc. usually have these shitty heads in them. I think that the driving factor behind all this is that most of the tape deck-buying public doesn't care. If you are recording off the radio, you aren't going to get anything higher than 15,000 Hz anyway, as the FCC has mandated that limitation upon FM broadcast bandwith (at least in the States). You can get nice tape decks with ceramic or alloy-based heads that can reproduce all the way to 20,000 Hz and even beyond, although most of us can't hear anything way up there (do it for Fido). I have a Nakamichi CR-1A, which is actually a very modestly priced tape deck (about $350). Nak has their priorities straight, though, and they make sure you're buying sound reproduction technology, not floofy bullshit. I highly recommend their tape deck products. Really, though, CDs sound a lot better. -- -Will "And the mercury is rising, barometer starts to fall. You know it gets to us all." ------------------------------ Subject: Back Again ! I'm very relieved to hear that Mark's not giving up the bass. And Marcus is right--I'm so preoccupied with being America's heartthrob T.V. doctor that I shouldn't worry myself about such insignificant matters! (Jeez - I thought that I had escaped all the "E.R." wisecracks when I moved to Japan!) As for the suggestion of organizing a group trip to see Mark's (alleged) upcoming concerts, Yeah! I'm all for it. Having still never seen him in person, I wouldn't mind going to England (it's only halfway around the world) for such an opportunity. Of course, there's probably a pretty good chance he might play here in Japan, too (seems to have been a regular stop on the Level 42 itinerary.)
