I have just started receiving the digests, so pardon any ignorance I express. I would be interested in accessing any Level42 videos out there. I have only seen one compilation of tele-videos. Unfortunately we don't get much Level42 action in the states. Help! ------------------------------ Subject: Jakko and .mid files From: WJGreer @ aol.com Date: Sat, 18 Jan 1997 12:35:05 -0500 (EST) Hey! Well, I got "Are My Ears on Wrong" in the mail yesterday. Not bad after one listen - I'm not sure what I was expecting. It sounds a lot like Go West to me (no wonder L42 chose Jakko to play after Alan had passed). I really enjoy the solo sound he gets on a couple of the songs - I think "Drowning Not Waving" is one - very legato, fluid sound. Good stuff. Does anyone remember where the Level 42 .MID files are posted? I pulled down the Heathrow file one day and then forgot where it came from. -WJG ------------------------------ Subject: 1 L42 T-Shirt Left! From: Zak Date: Sat, 18 Jan 97 09:54:11 -0800 Hey there; I just moved a couple months ago, and while unpacking a box recently I found a Level 42 T-shirt left over from when I had them printed about 10 months ago. It's still brand new. This is the design with the "Level 42 Lady" (what's her name again?) silhouette on the front with "Level 42" and the level42-request email address on the front and the World Machine cog motif and the digest home page address on the back. One slight drawback - it's a Medium size shirt. So as I realize this won't fit everybody, I'll give this shirt away to whoever wants it, or whoever can fit into it; I'll even pay for shipping anywhere in the U.S. First come first served! The shirt is 100% cotton, and it looks good. Email me at Xaqtly @ primenet.com if you're interested! --Zak ------------------------------ Subject: WinMan, Pat and The Chinese Way From: Zak Date: Sat, 18 Jan 97 09:54:16 -0800 > Pat, good point. I left The Chinese Way off my list of underapreciated > tracks because, well, you know, why beat a dead horse? I think I'll > go listen to it now, and then cry myself to sleep... Aw, man, come on...cheer up! You're not the only one who likes Chinese Way...I bet a lot of people just haven't mentioned it because they fear the razor sharp barbs on Pat's tongue. :) And no, I don't think that means he's planning to lick anybody, at least that I know of. I put The Chinese Way right up there with my favorite L42 songs. Look, guys; The Chinese Way is another great example of L42's diversity, and also it's a great example of how tight they were. It's a very accurate song, and Mark does a very melodic bassline in it as well. You can find those attributes in a lot of other really great L42 songs if you listen. Yes, Chinese Way is "a little bit pop", but I like pop. Sue me, I grew up in the early 80s with A Flock Of Haircuts. However, I also really like jazz and funk, so considering that The Chinese Way is probably one of the jazziest, funkiest, grooviest "pop" songs you'll ever hear, I consider it one of my favorites. In fact, if you look at it that way, The Chinese Way has more groove than S.A.Y. does. But of course let's not forget that it's all still L42, and I can't actually find any real fault with any of L42's songs...S.A.Y. is also one of my favorites, but for a different reason...which is why L42 appeals to me so much. Well that was longer than anticipated, so I'll call it my $.03 and let the flames tickle my toes. :) As always, please direct flames to Xaqtly @ primenet.com, not to the digest. --Zak ------------------------------ Subject: Mike Lindup??!! From: RBnDk @ aol.com Date: Sat, 18 Jan 1997 13:31:10 -0500 (EST) Recently, I was enlightened by Mike Lindup's solo album, 'Changes'. (Thanks to Winston and Mikey42).. Anyhow.. I have always loved the Mike Lindup tracks on the L42 cd's, but hearing his album was almost a religious experience. I would be really curious to know if anyone enjoys this album as much as I, seeing that I haven't seen this subject brought up in ahwhile. (But I could be wrong..) "Out of Sight.. Out of Mind" ==Kara P.S. This one is for you.. and you know who you are! ------------------------------ Subject: Swars and Les From: "Jay Tracy" Date: Sat, 18 Jan 1997 14:51:42 -0500 (EST) Some off-topic stuff: I'm not a fan myself, but there seems to be a big Star Wars base here, in the new New Yorker mag (Jan 6th, lousy "2000" cover art), there is a really good, and long article on Lucas, worth checking out, I can photo copy for people that don't have access to the NYer. Also, past talk of Les Claypool, who've I've always gotten a kick out of, I've been giving his new solo album a listen, there is a track called "The Awakening", which kicks some serious butt. Me thinks it could almost be Mark King around the time of The Pursuit of Accidents. All in all, as w/ most Les, the album is fun. And he to proves to be a pretty good drummer. I can't think of anything Level, ..jay ------------------------------ Subject: Virtual non-Level 42 related items From: rcol @ ix.netcom.com (Randall L Collins) Date: Sat, 18 Jan 1997 13:01:45 -0800 Doug writes: > Those of you who have not had the pleasure of listening to any of > Bela, check his CDs out, I'm pretty sure you'll like what you hear. Hear, hear! I've got all of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones CD's including "Live Art". As much as I absolutely adore Vic's new CD, listening to some of his bass lines with the band would almost make this pianist pick up a bass and learn how to play it. Don't worry..I'll stick with the keys. There's one thing you can definitely say about Bela, is that his group sounds like NO other group! > I saw a CD w/Bela, an Asian woman (Chinese?) playing a violin (Cello?) > and an Indian playing a Sitar (I think). I was wondering if anybody > has heard this or owns it and what their impressions of this CD was. I've seen this CD in one of my BMG catalogs and I was very curious about it. I am going to order it evenually because I know my wife would enjoy it. I'll let you know about it as soon as I get it. Joe writes: > Curious. Do you think you'll get the UK version of this so I could see the lyrics to "Dream Crazy"? Or is it called "Cream Crazy'? Me writes: I just got Primus' "Tales From The Punchbowl". Overall, I like it pretty well. Les Claypool has a couple of rather interesting bass riffs and solos but it's typical bass grunge as usual. I'm still waiting to get "Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerals" in the mail. Anyone got this CD? "My name is Mud.." I'm planning on constucting a Level 42 fan demographic map to see where all of us reside! All of those interested... please e-mail me your city/state/ country/continent (all that apply) ...Eric or others could help with this info???????? THIS IS NOT FOR MARKETING PURPOSES, ONLY TO HELP WITH GEOGRAPHIC LAYOUT ---This could help with those planning to meet for area LevelFests, finding L42 CD/Records based on where fellow members live,etc.etc.!!! This could also could go on the Level 42 CD Project Dirkies is compiling. Sound good???? Let me know! Below is an enlarged version of the mapping idea. This would include a numbering system to correspond to the Digest member's subscribing date. (ie. Eric would be #1...some of the other first members would be 2,3, etc.)These numbers would also refer to the members name,e-mail, and approximate local.......This wouldn't necessarily have to be an ASCII drawing, maybe (11x14") world map that is sent out to digest members once the info. is compiled! |***| \***| -----------\*/ \ 400| ) / | / Chicago | / | / | : (Illinois) | : | : | : | : | ) / ( / \______/ *400 = Jim Spenner/Chicago, IL - USA/E-mail - HEYBERT @ ix.netcom.com I subscribed to the digest on 8/19/96 (with 401 members) JennCyn also started that date?
