You guys kill me. So I'm at work, and I don't have the Resurgence version of Forever Now, and I can't listen to it. It's driving me nuts, but I have to wait until I get home. So does anyone like the mentos commercial better than "Time Will Heal"? (I must admit it took me 5 minutes to figure out the which song was 'TWH'- hello Brad!) Angel, I must say that was the best account of the Vegas Fest. Maybe you should think about being a reporter on the TV news in California. Very descriptive. All we need is the videotape at 11:00 pm. I still say it's a dude in a big bird suit, right Katie? Maybe it's the same dude who was the lead singer in the Caesar's palace band. Someone back me up on this one. If Angel doesn't change her mind, I'm sending two Oompa Loompa hitmen to California! (hilarious story) Hey, if you guys don't mind can you send me a few choice pics from the Vegasfest. I want to make color copies to include in the card to Paul Crockford, and for myself. Let me know what you think. Brad, that Casiopea live CD is awesome. Thanks so much for lending it to me. Folks, if you haven't heard Toshihiro Naruse on 8 string electric bass, you are really missing a treat. This guy can flat out play, slap, pluck, etc. Well, that's all folks Later, Winston ------------------------------ Subject: Our own record label From: Pat Flanagan Date: Fri, 27 Jun 1997 08:37:57 -0400 > Subject: Our own label... ::phew:: that's an interesting idea, Paul, but I'll be devil's advocate here: 1) As a matter of practice, I wouldn't get involved in any business (and this WOULD be a business) that has more than five partners or investors. Otherwise, making decisions becomes impossible. 2) Is the market really there for Level 42 rarities? Once you get beyond the hardcore fan base (many of whom will already have what you're releasing through bootlegs, etc.), are any sales going to trickle in without an extensive publicity campaign? I'd be interested in knowing how many copies of Live At Wembley have sold, and how much profit was generated, particularly taking into account that beautiful multipage CD booklet. 3) It might take more cash than you think to start it up right. Take into account: legal fees for startup, legal fees for acquiring release rights, pressing fees (we certainly wouldn't go the route of the CD recorder, I would hope, rather it would be done in quantity), printing fees for inserts/booklets, distribution expenses, promotional expenses, administration expenses for paying royalties, etc. Don't think that I'm trying to rain on your parade. It's an intriguing idea, I just don't want to see people lose money and end up enemies because they went off half-cocked on an idea without thinking it through. On the upside, perhaps this idea would have a second purpose: a conduit for digest members who have bands to inexpensively release indie CDs by taking advantage of quantity discounts. Who knows, might work. Hansen" Organization: Worldmachine Technologies Corporation Date: Fri, 27 Jun 1997 11:36:44 -0400 (EDT) Hey Folks, just spoke with Winston, and I'm totally bummed that I couldn't make it to the Vegas Levelfest. I did take a listen to Paul Crockford's "welcome" RealAudio message (thanks Carl!), and it's nice to know that there's still a real recognition that the fans want to know what's going on! Onto a few other lessly-Level things... Someone mentioned Paul Weller (i.e., also of The Jam, Style Council). I would highly recommend checking out his first, self-titled solo album. This is the one with his sorta-hit "Uh Huh, Oh Yeah". Paul is really an outstanding musician and songwriter - an all-around "mod" kind of guy, and definitely on the roster for a dream team band! I finally picked up the soundtrack to the Activision PC video game "Interstate 76". It's available as a CD purchase only from Activision... I called their 1-800 number, and they billed me $12 for the CD plus $3 shipping. The CD is (on the whole) outstanding... it's about 45 minutes of very funky, themed soundtrack-like music - obviously composed to follow the storyline of the video game (which I've never seen!) There tends to be some dialogue by the characters in the game between every song... in this way, it eerily reminds me of the equally zany "Joe's Garage" by Frank Zappa! Anyways, if you really dig instrumental funk, check out this CD. The performing band is called "Bullmark" (which no one has heard of), but includes muscians (that at least Winston has heard of) "Brain" [drums], and Tom Coster [keyboards]. For more info and RealAudio samples, check out Activisions web site (http://www.activision.com/games/action/i76/sounds.html), or email me for more info. I was in the newsstand the other day and saw Thomas Dolby on the cover of some recording/production magazine (I think called "EQ"?) I took a brief look at the article, and he's hyping up his Headspace company (http://www.headspace.com). Worth going out and finding this mag if you're a Dolby fan or net-MIDI-geek... Dolby is a certified cool guy, talented songwriter, musician and geek. BUD_PLUG: A good friend of mine from school has just released a double CD of progressive techno. He and his partner are performing in/around the New England area (clubs, raves, etc.) under the names "Tube" and "Bionic Harmonic", and also have some recordings on the Liquid Sky label. They've also started their own label "Whole Tone" to record/promote/sell these new recordings, and are shopping them around on consigment at Tower, HMV, and a slew of local DJ shops. Anyone who might be interested in this sort of music (experimental electronic, techno, trip-hop... very artsy and creative) is welcome to email me or my friend directly . They are also looking for other artists/groups with similar-genre content for future compilation CD's. Lastly, for the 2% of digest members that are into the vintage electronic music of French synthesist Jean Michel Jarre, I saw that he's just released a remake of his famous "Oxygene" album. He supposedly reworks the old material (using mostly vintage instrumentation), but adds a 90's flavor to it (i.e., now-accepted-practice techno beats, etc.) If anyone has heard this, I'd be interested in their reviews via email! Did you know - 'Dune Tune' (subject to much debate over the Clarke/King messages) was recorded with Mark playing bass with a pick ? The first time I heard that track, I was just amazed at how goofy and poppish it was- didn't like it very much except for the last portion, at the break you mention- at that point, it turns into a full-fledged 42 effort! I had pointed that transition out to a couple of listeners, but now that someone else has made a new observation... the MENTOS connection... oh, no!
