Nothing remarkable about that, but it's nice to know that these guys are doing well for themselves in the States. Then I went into a new/used shop, and they were playing the Travelling Without Moving CD. Hadn't heard much of it before. Very cool. So, while I was there I found the new Swing Out Sister CD. I'd heard of its arrival a couple of weeks back (at least that it was on its way). I'm curious if anybody has picked it up and what they think of it. Does anybody have tour info for them? What I did pick up yesterday was a used copy of Paul Weller's Wild Wood CD. It's not much like the stuff with The Style Council (though Steve White is back to provide the drumming), but it is a SOLID piece of music. I was quite impressed on the first listen. Finally, a question for fans of Average White Band. What year did "Pick Up The Pieces" (the song) come out? I was watching The Simpsons last night, and that song and "The Hustle" appeared. It was the flashback to Marge & Homer's 1974 Senior Prom episode (yes, it WAS hilarious!). I seem to recall that "The Hustle" didn't come out til 1975, and I thought "Pick Up The Pieces" was 1976. Little help? Okay, I lied, it was all off-topic. If I'd gone to Levelfest I'd have something to say! Thanks for all the updates on activities. It sounds like an experience that should be repeated annually, ad nauseam. I especially recommend his first, self-titled CD... if you like any vintage stuff by Traffic, Weller is the evolution of that material for the 90's (much moreso than Winwood, who unfortunately stinks now). AWB's debut album (the one with Pick Up The Pieces) came out in 1974 - also highly recommended! -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Savage Rush... And Neil Peart was I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E. I'm not what you'd call a huge Rush fan, but I do like a lot of songs. This was my first time seeing them, and let me say, they really put on a top-notch show....As for Dan praising Neil, he wasn't dissing Phil...so, why flame Dan? Not necessary... To everyone at the Levelfest in Vegas...sounds like a lot of fun. Wish I could have been there. Bob C ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Steely Dan.. From: Paul Fucito Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 12:49:35 -0700 I have an idea for any takers out there regarding long lost Level 42 songs and re-issues... With our combined international list of members, in so many fields, perhaps WE can start a small record label to re-issue old Level 42 music and make some legal compilations of rare tracks and related projects... Sure, many of you are saying "This guy must be eating paintchips..", but look at Ryko, Rhino, Kleopatra and Oglio Records. They all started small with little money and began growing. It's a shot in the dark, but all it takes is enough genuine interest and help to make it work. Perhaps Crockford can help... Paul ------------------------------ Subject: My VegasFest Experience From: angelina rogero Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 17:10:03 -0700 (PDT) Hello all! I had recently written an account of the Vegas Levelfest to Doug White and I figured I should send it also to the Digest. It is in some play-by-play detail so I hope you don't mind. Yeah, we had a lot of fun. On Friday night we arrived (fellow Digester, Seth and I) and were walking toward the strip from the parking lot of our hotel to find a cheap place to eat before we met up with everyone. As we get about 20 feet from the sidewalk, I see Winston pointing at me and he is with about ten Level 42 shirted people! It was really wacky to just run into them like that without meaning to. The rest of them went inside to the Monte Carlo Pub while we ate across the street and then we met up with them and met everyone there. There were Winston, Lolita, Liz (Winston's sister), Dan and Bill Wilson, Tim, Katie, Carl, Laurel and Brad. We stayed there watching videos and listening to a cheesy duo playing sequenced soft rock oldies until we decided we wanted to go dancing. We headed over to Caesar's Palace Hotel to the 'Barge' to hear a dance band playing. This was where we saw the bassist who played a solo with his teeth! How'd he know we'd all appreciate that? Choice quote from that evening was, Lolita: "That is a dude, that is a dude, that is a dude!" referring to the band's lead singer. We had yet more drinks and danced till we couldn't take it anymore. The next day we met up with the same folks except for Tim but with the additions of Jeff Grous and Zak and his wife, Leslie. It was 10am at the Treasure Island Buffet. After breakfast we went to Winston and Lolita's hotel room to hear the Crockford tape and the Past & Presence CD. It was then that the L42 chair, hat, and P&P CD were won by Brad, Laurel and Seth, respectively. After also listening to the NAMM show that Mark played at, Winston, Jeff, Dan, Bill, Katie and I went to the New York, New York Hotel to ride the great rollercoaster they have. That was so fun! That corkscrew was "slammin'!" We stopped at another bar inside the hotel after the coaster to gear up for another one across the strip at MGM Grand. After a long trek over to the MGM amusement park, we discovered that the SkyCoaster we wanted to go on wasn't a rollercoaster at all but an evil contraption that hangs you from a string from insane heights and lets you fall and swing yourself into oblivion. Winston and I were having none of that. Jeff and Bill were about to actually indulge in this nightmare but then they heard that the next possible time to 'fly' was at 11:30 pm and it was only around 5pm then. We then walked around the small scale amusement park and watched people set "water bombs" off to soak people on a water ride. That was evil. After a small rest, we all met up again at the Hard Rock Cafe to eat. We met Lyle Bosley there too. I didn't get to really talk with him though as they had to split us up into two tables and he wasn't at mine. We had fun there watching one of the male hosts wearing a woman's makeup prance around. (Bill: There's your friend!) After dinner we gambled some at the Hard Rock Casino and then decided to go to the Motown Cafe in NY,NY hotel to (hopefully) win at Karaoke. Unfortunately, there was a ten dollar cover to get into that place so we ended up people watching instead as we lost Zak and Leslie somewhere in the "city." Oh, and that's when Laurel won 200 dollars at her second pull of the slot machine. She did bet a 20 dollar bill or something though. When we finally realized that Zak & Leslie weren't coming back, we went to the MGM Grand for more drinks and another dance band. Yes, yet another rendition of Boogie Oogie Oogie was played. There was a lot to make fun of there too. The dancers and the band's fluctuating tempos. Laurel was nice enough to buy us our second round of drinks there too because she was suddenly rich. Thanks, Laurel! When asked what to do on Sunday and where haven't we all gone together this weekend, I replied, the Luxor. So on Sunday we met at the Luxor to eat a late breakfast/lunch. More great conversation there too. Liz bought us all our meal on her business account (she was there on business coincidentally on the same weekend we were) which was so cool of her. After this we went to the Sphinx (NOT Sphincter!)at the front (I repeat, FRONT, not across the street at the Excalibur!) of the hotel to take pictures and then we headed home. It was really great just hanging out with all these people. It was like I had known them already. It's weird how a common bond brings people together. Unfortunately, through the whole weekend, even though we went to many bars, there was no Cider to be had anywhere! This was something Winston, Lolita and I wanted to have badly! What was that drink with the cranberry in it again, Lolita? I think I was the youngest person of the group but everyone made me feel very comfortable which was very nice. Thanks, guys! Winston and Katie: Big Bird's legs are too straight for it to be a guy in a suit! Everyone: It was Seth's fault that we were always late! You saw how he was always "bringing up the rear" as Liz would say! :) Thanks everyone for being there, thanks to Level42 for bringing us together, and thanks to Paul Crockford for the personal message (it brought tears to my mom's eyes!). Angel ------------------------------ Subject: MENTOS! The freshmaker! From: angelina rogero Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 17:14:14 -0700 (PDT) Jason Kosewick and all, Yes, yes, YES! I do think that Time Will Heal sounds like a Mentos commercial! I've always thought that and fellow Digester and friend, Seth always laughs at me for saying that! That song only gets really good at the end when Mark starts singing "time will heal" softly and it gets quiet and then builds up. That's when it loses that Mentos commercial cheesy quality. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I think that Mark just assimilated the S.C. influence so thoroughly that he went through a period of writing tunes that sound like they were written by S.C. (actually quite a common illness among bassists. I call it "Stanley Hands"--in extreme cases, occasionally requiring an emergency Clarkectomy.) Also, Lolita was asking about the new live Marcus Miller CD. Yes, I have it. It's called "Live and More". At first, I must say I was slightly disappointed (as I also was with "Tales"--I don't know if he'll ever be able to top "The Sun Don't Lie"), but this new CD has grown on me. I think my favorite tunes are the three bonus studio tracks at the end of the disc. As I mentioned once before on the Digest, the third bonus track "I'll be there for you" (Japanese version only) has a sample of Wally Badarou's "Mambo" (though I've never heard the original "Mambo", so I couldn't actually tell you WHAT is sampled!). -Doug R. ------------------------------ Subject: For Discussion/EWF/CD Now From: HEYBERT @ ix.netcom.com Date: Fri, 27 Jun 1997 01:06:28 -0500 (CDT) Hello all, I love to see a topic such as Neil Peart get chewed to the bone!
