There are a number of basslines of Level 42 songs that are very similar to Stanley's, but I think that is a function of Mark copying riffs versus doing remakes. Another example of this is a direct comparison of Lopsy Lu from Vulcan Princess (the first song I ever taught myself on the bass) to Heathrow (or Heatrow, as found on The White Funky - that still bothers me). The first two measures sound almost exactly the same. This is probably a similar situation to Dune Tune and whatever Stanley song it sounds like. Has anybody heard Marcus Miller's new live CD yet? A friend of mine saw Swing Out Sister at Webster Hall on Monday night and said they kicked ass. I was on a business trip so I couldn't go, and I'm kicking myself. Nobody I like is actually perfoming when I am around, and it's bumming me out. Speaking of which, is Incognito ever coming back to the States? Lolita [as you may know, Incognito did a surprise show at a club in Atlanta, GA last week... read about it on Incognito Digest! -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Dune Tune Revisited From: Ethan Bender Date: Wed, 25 Jun 1997 10:59:01 -0500 Fellow Levelheads, WHATTUP!!!!! I'm glad someone mentioned the Clarke influence on King. There are definite similarities between Dune Tune and Clarke's School Days, but each song stands on its own. In this particular instance we would have to say that Clarke influenced King as the School Days album was recorded in 1976 and L42 was released five years later. I would say that both of these songs should be a part all bassists repertoire: especially bassists wanting to study fusion-style bass playing. By the way, if anyone will be in the Milwaukee, WI. area between Jun.26/Jul.6, come and see my band, Streetlife, at Summerfest. Summerfest is a HUGE lakefront music festival here in Milwaukee and Streetlife will be performing there on June 26,27 & 30, as well as July 1,2,3, & 5. If anyone happens to be able to come, I'll be the bass player w/dreadlocks playing a MUSICMAN StingRay5. Greet me as a Fellow Levelhead! Also I'm curious about Crockford's message, somebody put this on the net? About the CDR-projects (like past & presence) Philips announced today (?) that they will release the first CDRecordable-player end '97/ begin '97. It wil cost about 1500 guilders (+/- 800 US dollars), one CD-recordable (write-once) will cost 10 guilders (4 US dollars) and CR-rewritable (write many times) will cost 50 guilders (20 US dollars). Just want to let you know that finally there is a big step forward to replace the cassette-tape (at least for me). I just ordered 'Brothers Johnsson - Blam!' because of your recommendations, better be a good cd! I can offer to buy and send any new Level 42 CD's or video's that I can find to anyone in the U.S. I live outside near Boston, and HMV (Cambridge) usually has the best L42 collection around. I will charge the purchase price + $3 shipping (which is what the P.O. will charge me. this is based on 1 CD. not sure if it'll cost more for additional CD's/videos) Please email me at BHCONRAD @ AOL.COM and we can work out the details. Actually it occurred to me that the riff I mentioned a few days ago that is an old standby, is the one that Mark plays on The Essential (near the end of the song, where it gets really quiet and it's just a slow bass solo--this is the same riff on School Days, and it's a common bass riff. > * Lolita doing the duet with those two pianists at the Monte Carlo Pub I've still got my keychain from this venue. Actually, as I recall, there were plenty of weirdos all over Vegas--what a strange place, but yes--the dude in the white suit was quite the sight. One more wonderful event was not letting Julie Brown steal our cab from the Hard Rock, and hearing your 'sis rip on her for trying. You have one cool sister Winston! "I don't know why...." The impression I got from the tape was that Mark is in a bit of a rut, and needs some fresh inspiration and feels that leaving everything behind and starting over is just what he needs. Personally, I was impressed with the little clips I heard from the Peir interview and he should just finish up those recordings and pass 'em along! Thanks again to everyone for making Vegas a special trip. Whoever said that we all acted as though we'd known each other for years, even though we'd just met was very correct. Everyone got along very well; we all seemed to have more than just a love of a band in common. I'm looking forward to our next get together, and to meeting more of you! ------------------------------ Subject: Vegas Levelfest! From: Zak Date: Wed, 25 Jun 97 13:51:17 -0400 Hi ho; Well as you've read by now, we all had a great time at the Vegas Levelfest. I really had a great time, as did Leslie, and it was a blast meeting everybody and hanging out. I strongly recommend doing it again, either in Vegas again or Atlantic City, or in London; it seemed like we all had fun wherever we went, so I bet we can have fun wherever the next LevelFest is. ;) Winston, you da bomb...can't wait till next time. :) Lolita, you da bomb too... Brad, let's talk drums some more! Phil really IS better, isn't he? :) Bill, I SWEAR I'll have that song to you in 2 weeks ;) Dan, feel like sharing any of your grossly excessive winnings? :) BTW, sorry you guys had to run off Sunday morning, it was great meeting you! Carl, you know you da man. Laurel, great to see you again! Katie, glad you could make it and represent the Boston contingent... Seth, nice meeting you...congrats on the CD! :) Angel, good to see you again too... Jeff, nice to meetcha! Lyle, glad you could make it for dinner at the Hard Rock! And a big ol' thanks to Liz Walker for Sunday and for being a really cool human being in general. :) And thanks to John Venzon of course for supplying the Past & Presence discs...wish you coulda been there, man! :) BTW, I forgot to mention to everybody in Vegas that John V looks like Jeff from Akbar & Jeff, the comic strip, in case you were wondering what he looked like. :) And I got some cool pictures too, which I'll get scanned in and then we'll get them all up on somebody's web page. And finally, I just want to say again how much fun it was...in real life it's pretty rare when you get to hang out with 10 or 12 really cool people for a couple days, and I really enjoyed it. Thanks everybody! Probably I would be number 10000 to write how good they were (ARE !) etc.etc., but at least it would give me the feeling of having done what I should and that is to thank them for all their hard work and for all the incredible joy and pleasure I got from their music. However two things are holding me back: 1) _Will_ they get the mail via Paul Crockford, since he does not seem to be their manager anymore ? Or am I going to get a standard pre-printed reply sent by Paul or his secretary ? 2) I don't have their address. If those "problems" would be solved I would definitly write them. However I think you should not put up a direct link to Paul's e-mail address, it may get a bit busy. And we would not want to see our "serious" mails drowned in a flood of "junk" mail would we ? Maybe we could say that only digestmembers will get the address, so there would be at least a small barrier to take to get the address. That saves a lot of work for Paul. Or am I being egoistic about this ? Anyway, maybe Paul may be reached via his "World Famous Records" label-site ? Or am I mistaking ? Something else, today I was at a local 2nd hand store and saw a Steely Dan "Box". No clue what's in it. It cost DFL 75,-. Is it worth getting for this money ? I know there are some "Dan" fans here... Get out of the gutter and listen to some other bands! I agree that L42 is something special and are a group of talented individuals. They are, too, my favorite band, but there are other talented bands/musicians in the world. Get off the computer and get some fresh air. Oh yeah, I go to concerts to listen to the music, not to look at the women (although they ARE present). As for the groove thing, you obviously haven't heard a Rush album ever or ever been to one of their concerts.
