Winston and Zak raffled off a copy which Seth won, but I won Winston's L42 chair, a wooden chair blanketed with L42 photos and cd covers then covered with a polyurethene finish. It's the most unique(except for it's twin in Winston's apt.) and wonderful gift I could ever ask for. Lets make Vegas an annual event. I could stuff 3 people in my little house (or 20, outside with the lizards!) Once again Winston, thanks I'll "chair"ish it forever. On another note, someone yesterday said that Neil Peart "blows Phil and Gary away". As a professional Drummer, I disagree. It's like comparing apples to oranges. There is no question of Neil's ability, but Phil's strength lies in groove and feel and that's something you can't teach. Besides, Phil has a much stronger jazz background than Neil. When Neil played with the Buddy Rich big band a few years ago, he wasn't cutting the gig at all.(Buddy Rich memorial scholarship video) All I'm saying is Neil's playing is often highlighted with RUSH in such a way as to complement his strengths, and I admirre that. But speaking as a drummer and not a L42 fan... stroke for stroke, I'll take Phil overall anyday. ------------------------------ Subject: vegas WOW! From: winston.walker @ wathneltd.com Date: Tue, 24 Jun 1997 9:35:57 -0500 Hey everyone, just a quick note about the weekend. Tuesday is my first day back to work, and I'm still a bit tired from the trip. I had a blast, and thanks to everyone for coming, and making it lots of fun. Everyone is so cool, I can't wait to do this again. Big thanks to Ian Buck for going to Paul Crockford with my request for the audio greeting he made for us. Thanks to Crockford for actually doing it, and thanks so much to Mikey Payne for introducing me to Ian. Big shout out to Carl & Laurel for hanging with us on Sunday, and getting us to the airport on time. Here are some quick memories of the trip: * Lolita doing the duet with those two pianists at the Monte Carlo Pub * Watching the weirdos at the New York, New York Casino. (guess it really is like New York!) * Japanese dinner sunday nite! (great call Brad) * Checking out WEB-TV at Brad's sprawling Vegas mansion * katie trying to eat her handbag while we rode the roller coaster at the New York, New York Casino. * The bass solo at Ceasers Place, to 'Brick House'. * Lyle being the ironman. he just got back from Seattle. worked all day long, met us at the Hard Rock for dinner, and had to split to get up at 4:30 to go back to work. What dedication!! * Wathing that Guy rub his ass as he danced at the MGM hotel. He was doing the 'Forbidden Dance', as Angel says!! * Seth sleeping all day saturday. :-) * Zak for going above and beyond the call of duty. Not only did he deal with the restaurant manager to get 16 level 42 fans into the buffet at Treasure Island, ahead of the 200+ on line, he came armed with a few copies of the NEW 'Past & Presence' CD, care of John venzon. * speaking of Breakfast, are we still waiting for Carl, Laurel, Seth and Angel to arrive? :-) * Carl pointing out 'Boogie Oogie Oogie' to me at the Stratosphere. * Bill Wilson eating that ice at about 4:30 a.m. sunday morning !! (don't worry, i didn't tell anyone) :-) hey, blackmail works!! More to come, and Carl, Zak and I pledge to load up some pics to our pages. Bill got some video fottage, and probably 300 pics as well. Now I have to say thanks to John Venzon for sending those advance copies of the new live disc. John, I knew you were, as they say in Vegas, 'DA BOMB!!', but man, that disc is awesome. Folks if you had any doubts about this dsic being a concert, wait until you hear this disc. The audio is seamless! John, that transition from 'If U Were mine' into 'her Big Day' is wonderful. i can't believe that they didn't play those tunes that way. great, great work. Thanks so much. Lastly, I never wanna' hear 'Boogie Oogie Oogie' again in my life. Take care, Winston AKA DATMAN!! p.s. Tim, contact me, as i have your copy of the Paul Crockford tape. ------------------------------ Subject: Dune Tune question From: "Julian Arnold" Date: 24 Jun 1997 08:27:23 -0700 Hello guys!! I read this just now and felt I had to comment: > I think Mark was definitley influenced by Stanley Clark. I'm not sure > any of you new this, but the song "Dune Tunes" is originally found on > Stanley Clarke's album "School Days." Now, I'm no Stanley expert, but maybe it's a different song by the same or similar name? Mark King wrote Dune Tune, and to my knowledge, Stanley Clark never recorded that song. Though, I could be wrong." I don't profess to be an expert either, no not by a long shot but I've collected a few Stanley Clarke CD's and although Mark King admits he was influenced by Clarke and yes if you listen to 'Jamaican Boy' the riff is almost identical, however Dune Tune IS exclusively a King creation but there are notable 'influences?' Input invited and welcome. Long live the great Deep Stringers!!. Slan go foil, Jules. ------------------------------ Subject: More Ramblings From: winston.walker @ wathneltd.com Date: Tue, 24 Jun 1997 10:38:42 -0500 Back again for a bit.. Andre, feel free to grab what you want from page. No problem, we all share the wealth. Carl, can't wait to see those EARLY pics of yours up on the pages. They are awesome. I'm all up for Atlantic City, only been there twice, but count me in! Micro-Kid remix featuing 'James Brown; - I think we talked about this a few months ago. It's the remix version that was released by A&M records here in the u.s. It's pretty cool, at least for the first few minutes. It is VERY boring. Yes, it uses samples of Eddie Murphy doing his impersonation of James Brown. The flip side is a dub version, which somehow is even more monotonous than the 'A' side. The only cool things is you can hear Boon's guitar really nicely. Mark moving - according to the tape Paul Crockford provided, Mark is selling his house, BUT is staying on the Isle of Wight. he is selling his studio AND the equipment as well. "I don't know why...." As I sit here trying to recover from the drive out, the 48-hour party and the drive back, I can't help but continue to think, "What a BLAST!" I had _so_ much fun!! It was really, really great to finally meet some of my fellow co- conspirators and put faces to the discussions, projects and ideas I have been so fortunate to be a part of. It's amazing to meet up with a bunch of people you don't know and feel like you already do. The interesting thing is that I don't think any other band could inspire such an eclectic and diverse group of people as our boys do. What I also found unique (and it was also mentioned by Liz) was that nobody is a "one- band-man" fanatic- we all have very wide tastes and interests in music- but L42 just happens to be at the top of our individual lists! Wow. Winston had the "Level 42 museum" set up in the room with many, many fabulous items to inspect and drool over, Carl brought a plethora of photos and memorabilia to pore over, and I brought the revised AYGB CD and cassette (Yes! There's a version for the tape you made for your car- E-mail me if you want one) covers for everyone who hadn't seen them. I must tell you, there's a lot of music I don't have- gotta get some of those unique CDs and performances! And all those photos of you guys with band members... well, all I can say is I wish _I_ was in some of those pics...! Amazing! Winston GAVE AWAY his unique Level 42 chair (painted and then covered with zillions of "42" artifacts, covers and logos. Didn't Liz make that chair?) and made some great _Past and Presence_ gig tickets that looked amazingly real. There was just SO much stuff. BTW, finding the room is interesting- the Aladdin gives guests _maps_! First you take the elevator down, then you climb stairs, and go through a zillion corridors ("You are in a maze of twisty passages, all alike.") to get to the room. Sheesh! Crockford's greeting was a complete surprise- I had no idea that had been done, and just about fell over when I heard it. Recorded just for us- fantastic! And just when I thought it couldn't get any better... WE GOT TO HEAR AN ADVANCE COPY OF PAST AND PRESENCE, DISC 1!! Yahooooo! John has really outdone himself on this one- everything fits together so well. The only tracks I had heard before were the 3 "missing" tracks from APP, so I was in 42 heaven... I can't wait for a copy of that. We trekked around Vegas for the better part of the weekend- hit the cool 'coaster at the New York, New York, and did a bunch of other things, including sitting through an excruciatingly bad and bad-sounding performance by this lounge band (everybody has to do that at least once a trip to Vegas!). Surprisingly, the drummer came up to us after the performance, told us he loved Level 42, and asked if we were crew members... What a crackup! Of course, most folks asked if L42 was some type of club or sorority... Can't wait to see some of the photos from the 'Fest. A few more things: Winston: Great meetin' ya! Was that Shuf I'm supposed to do that thing for? (Or was it Zak telling me about that?) Carl: You are TOO cool! I'll be in touch, videos to follow. Brad: Thanks for the shirt! Bill: Sorry we didn't get to fly!! Everyone else: What great people you all are. Let's do it again! One last thing: I promised several items to several folks- custom stickers, covers, etc... But I don't remember what it all was. Please E-mail me so I can get going on everything. And let's get collaborating on the shirt idea, okay? Still spinning... -Jeff "If you hear what he says, it's acceptable!" ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V97 #174 From: "Andre Huijts" Date: Tue, 24 Jun 1997 19:45:39 +0200 Paul Fucito writes: > Remember a few weeks ago CDNow had some CD Singles for Something About > You? It is a Canadian CD single. It comes in a "normal" CD cover (so not a CD5 cover) without a ps (damn !). There is only a general back cover. The CD is black, with a yellow band on top in which is printed: CD single. The tracks are not special at all, just SAY and LIL. The release date however, is very unusual. I found a number on the CD saying 940322, so I guess that is a production date (march 22 1994). Very strange date to release a CD5 with these tracks ! It cost me about 10 bucks including postage. Here's how it could work... 1. A date in the next few weeks is selected for the on-line sale. 2. Members check their local CD stores and their own collections and post any available CDs, or other items they may wish to sell, to the digest on the date chosen. 3. Members could then e-mail privately other members who have items of interest. 4. Members could help each other obtain missing items for their collections. These types of sales appear to be happening on a somewhat more informal basis now, but imagine the excitement a global-digestwide sale could generate. On a non-42 note, I just checked the listings for Steely Dan on CDNow. They showed Toy Matinee as a similar artist. I wonder why? I wish I can see the direct correlation (other than sound quality, intersting music, and sarcastic/edgy lyrics). Hmmm... Glad to hear the Levelfest was such a success. Apparently Average White Band, EWF, KC & The Sunshine Band, and Tom Jones will all be playing Vegas this summer. Too much heaven!
