Well, I noticed that they are now gone...Did anybody get a copy? What was on it? I like the NYC idea.... Any people from the Jersey Shore area? I will be moving back up there in a few weeks and think we should do a Levelfest Atlantic City... Have not heard the new Alphaville single...How is it? Paul ------------------------------ Subject: Vega$, Maxwell, EW&F, AC Levelfest From: Lolitaj @ aol.com Date: Mon, 23 Jun 1997 13:41:54 -0400 (EDT) Hey All: I'm sitting at my desk after returning from the most fun Levelfest ever! I won't go into detail here because I'm sure someone else will, but it was great to see everyone and we received a few surprises thanks to Winston and Zak. For all of you who went, it was great meeting and hanging out with you, especially the 'people watching' at The Motown Cafe. Anyway, a few quick responses: * Maxwell is (no, I won't say it) very good. As a matter of fact, he is playing next Friday night in the hotel Winston and I stayed at (everybody and their momma will be in Vegas next weekend because of the Tyson-Holyfield rematch) and I'm pissed that we just missed him. * An Atlantic City Levelfest would be cool. Any of us in the NY/NJ area can just drive down for a day at the beach. * Earth, Wind & Fire is touring, huh? Is Maurice White going out with them, or is it still just Philip Bailey doing all the vocals. I can't justify seeing them without Maurice - it just isn't the same for me. * For the next big Levelfest, I say we charter a bus to take us from London to Portsmouth and back. If we get 30 people to go, it will be pretty cheap and we can make it a party bus - sing as loudly as we want, get drunk as we want (no drunk driving that way), bring a portable CD player and blast the boys music, etc. Then we just hop on the ferry and try not to get seasick from being full of beer and cider (just kidding). That would be a fun time. * Speaking of England, Laurel Anderson just returned from London to Southern California, so maybe she can tell all you West Coast people how much a flight from there costs. I know it is only 9 hours because you fly straight over the North Pole and save time, so it isn't much longer than flying from the East, but it may be prohibitively expensive. I'll let her (or Elson - I know you've been there within the last few years) tell you the cost. Just to let you'all know that I just "updated" the LLLF site: http://home.worldonline.nl/~huijts/index.html Still not very fancy, but at least some links included now.....and a new structure for future expansion........ Now I have a question for fellow Level 42-site "owners". Could I get some graphics or small pics for my page from you. (i.e. a simple L42 logo, small band pic etc. ) I only have a louzy handscanner, so I can't make them myself.....and I don't want to rip pictures from your sites ! Please help ! I'm not sure > any of you new this, but the song "Dune Tunes" is originally found on > Stanley Clarke's album "School Days." Now, I'm no Stanley expert, but maybe it's a different song by the same or similar name? Mark King wrote Dune Tune, and to my knowledge, Stanley Clark never recorded that song. To initiate another order and recoup the set-up costs while keeping the price under $20 will require about 50 orders total. If you would like to help me drum up support and new orders, feel welcome. If there are less than 50 orders, the shirts will be a little too expensive to justify making them. The set-up costs for the project total about $200, and the average shipping cost per order is about $3. The previous order I did was about 80 shirts, and I did not quite break even on it at $16 per shirt, so I may charge $18 this time. I picked up the wav file of the song 'All Over You' and saw it was on this CD only after I had already purchased it this week. (By the way, it was very hard to find at the major CD shops here in upstate New York! Why doesn't that shock me???) Anyway, since I will probably have to special order it here, could someone provide me with the pertinent information I will need to do so? I appreciate any help I can get! As for the Vegas Levelfest, I look forward to hearing from those who attended! You are all lucky to spend the time together with such a great common intrest! Take care! I see hits to it, > but that could be individuals checking to see if anyone's there. Maybe > I should work up a calendar where people can post when they'll be there, > to facilitate meeting others. Let me know what you think. I think that's a good idea. I'm one of those people that generates a few hits from time to time, but it's usually just to see if anyone is around. As for Lolita's suggestion about the London/IOW fest--that sounds like a great idea to me. The other suggestion that we talked about this weekend was a trip to NYC. As Manhattan is way to expensive, we could all plan on staying in Jersey and shuttling into the city on the train. Personally, I'm happy to do either trip, but I've never been overseas and that trip sounds a bit more exciting to me. > He even > told me of other stuff, like a "Micro Kid" remix that contains samples > of Eddie Murphy's James Brown impression. Anyone know of this? Yes, I got a copy of that from a DJ friend of mine many years ago. Unfortunatly, I don't care much for it. The overall mix is a bit too bright, and is a bit cheesy (if you want my opinion). It's been a long time since I've listened to it though. Maybe I'll throw it on the turntable tonight. It's also got a dub-version on the back, but I don't remember how good it is. > I was > browsing around on my ancient Mac SE/30 (yeah, I know you're all LOL > at the fact that I have this old computer in this day and age), but it > does serve its purpose... I'm not sure > any of you new this, but the song "Dune Tunes" is originally found on > Stanley Clarke's album "School Days." Actually, I beleive that riff is really an old bass "standby" -- at least, that's what a bass player friend of mine told me when I made the connection. Excellent album in any case however. One I really need to pick up on CD one of these days. > Well all I can say is that this vegasfest exceeded all my wildest > expectations and more... It was the most fun I have had in the last 5 > years at least!!!! Well said Bill. My sincerest regrets to all of you who were unable to make it this weekend. This was a weekend that I will never forget. I knew this would be a good time, but it far surpassed my expectations as well. Thank you all for making this special. As I'm sure you'll be reading several times already in today's digest, there were some really special moments. Not the least of which was listening to a personal welcome from Paul Crockford, recorded just for this event. Despite everything that has been said about him in the past, of not doing enough to promote the band, yada yada yada, I felt all warm inside listening to this. Winston made many copies of this to be passed around, and I don't doubt that someone will provide some method of listening to this over the internet--mpeg audio, wav, Real Audio or however. We also were treated with a very special preview of the upcoming live disc, and let me just sent a personal note to John. Excellent job! I was really excited about the idea of having the tracks flow together as though they were performed in one show, and I think you did a wonderful job of making it sound just so. Several people in the room had never heard the Physical Presence version of 88, and I think they were in awe of this excellent performance. I can't wait to have it on CD. I'll leave the rest to others... It's been a long, 14 hour day at work trying to make up for taking Friday off :) Nothing compared to what Lolita went through during the last 24 hours I'm sure! Pretty good concert by the way! [Level 42 mode on] Well, you know I e-mailed WDR (this is the station actualy doing the Rockpalast reruns) and to my horror they wrote me BOTH Level 42 concerts (that is:Zeche Bochum 29.10.1983 and Grugahalle Essen 13./14.10.1984) were ALREADY rerun......AAAAAAAAAAARHHGHGHGHGH ! !! ! ! Regretfully I cannot recieve WDR anymore on my cable, but I do know plenty people who can. So I will keep a look too. Here's the reply I got from WDR: >Lieber Andre Huijts, >im WDR-Fernsehen läuft an jedem Wochenende eine Rockpalast-Nacht. Die beiden >Konzerte von LEVEL 42 sind dort auch schon wiederholt worden. Don't bother asking for VHS copies of the concerts, they're not doing it...... I have seen both concerts, and they are really worthwile, specialy if you haven't seen any early live stuff..... It's worth checking out the Rockpalast site anyway, there is a small story about our heroes and a little picture as well. Best thing is there are links to our favourite sites ! Paul Wilson writes: > I think Mark was definitley influenced by Stanley Clark. I'm not sure > any of you new this, but the song "Dune Tunes" is originally found on > Stanley Clarke's album "School Days." Now that is interesting, since the album credits Dune Tune (single, not plural) as written by Mark King himself ! Are you sure it's the same "song" ? Mark King said in many interviews Stanley Clarke was one of his favorite bassplayers, you're right about that..... Marcus Bone writes: > Having said that if MK does move out of IOW it will > mean that both Mark and Mike will be living in London Who says Mark is moving to London ? It's funny Brian, I'm translating a _very early_ (1982) Dutch interview to put on my LLLF site, and guess who Mark lists as his favorite bassplayers ? Louis Johnson,Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham and later he adds Marcus Miller........ So you are very right indeed !
