(the beginning of Peter Gabriel's 'Big Time') ILF! ILF! Yeah! OK, well, London and IOW sounds good to me! One would almost say, "huh huh, we're _there_ dude!" A while back, someone mentioned an all-star band called "Ure-Wang-King-Husband". Good one! ;-) I bet those guys would make a very interesting album, tough! [Level 42 mode off] *Has anyone heard the new ALphaville single "Wishful Thinking"? *Just bought "Garbage" and Kula Shaker's "K", both very excellent albums! *When is ZDF (or ARD) starting with the reruns of old Rockpalasts? Reason I'm asking is that yesterday I saw a very new one with INXS's new Elegantly Wasted Tour. Pretty good concert by the way! [Level 42 mode on] Well, back to the 42nd Level! My name is Paul Wilson and like all of you, I am an avid 42er. I was browsing around on my ancient Mac SE/30 (yeah, I know you're all LOL at the fact that I have this old computer in this day and age), but it does serve its purpose...Anyway, via the internet, I was able to catch up with a really cool friend who I hadn't spoken to since our days in the military. I'm sure all of you know Carl Mueller and it was through him that I was able to meet Mark and the gang after opening for Tina in '87, I believe. I will be eternally grateful, Carl. You da man!! As of now I'm trying to get as much of L42 on CD as I had on cassette tape and let me tell you, it's been a formidable task! I just bought the second version of "Forever Now," and I am quite please with it. So if any of you, can give me some pointers as to how I can acquire some of the older stuff, I'd appreciate it. If you don't mind I'd like to tell you a little about myself: I'm 29, I work for a healthcare organization (and I'm very disgruntled), I also attend San Diego City College soon to be transferring to SDSU. I will attempt to major in electrical engineering of telecommunications (haven't decided yet) with a minor in music as I am a saxophonist. Not quite as good as Krys or Gary, but pretty damn good I think...so that's the lowdown on me, I hope I didn't bore any of you... As for music, my taste varies. I love L42 of course, Swing Out Sister (Corrine is a goddess!), James Taylor Quartet, Vibraphonic, Jamiroquai rocks the house, and I cannot forget Incognito (still waiting and hoping to see them). There's that britfunk at its best. I also love the jazz world, i.e Art Porter, Sanborn, Jeff Lorber, Norman Brown, et al...And I love hip hop too. Mainly the hip hop with jazz undertones such as A Tribe Called Quest or the Roots. I also love the worl of acid jazz... Well thanks everyone. Especially you Eric. Carl Congrats on getting your BS!!!! Major props to you!! Love's a special thing, lovers only need honesty... Paul ------------------------------ Subject: Re: Level42 Digest V97 #170 From: JazPhreek @ aol.com Date: Sun, 22 Jun 1997 13:47:33 -0400 (EDT) I think Mark was definitley influenced by Stanley Clark. I'm not sure any of you new this, but the song "Dune Tunes" is originally found on Stanley Clarke's album "School Days." You might be able to find it at Tower with one of those "nice price" stickers on it, if you wanted to hear what it sounds like with Stanley playing it....I do hope I get to meet some of you and can make it to one of these Levelfests in the future. I always thought about this, so tell me what you think of this concept. I am a huge advocate for britfunk and I thought it would be cool to have an allstar line-up of musicians, kind of like Fourplay. Mark on the bass, as well as Randy Hope-Taylor, 'Bluey' Maunick on rhythm guitar, Boon on Lead, Derrick Mackenzie (Jamiroquai) on drums, James Taylor (JTQ) and Mike Lindup sharing duties on the ivories, Corrine Drewery on vox or anyone who you think mught fit the bill. I know it's pretty farfetched, but it would be cool for the musicians of the UK to put a compilation CD together dedicated to the many years of good music they've put out... Well, that's about it, guys and gals... Having said that if MK does move out of IOW it will mean that both Mark and Mike will be living in London - which means a trip to IOW would only be relevant for people who want to see Joe Dafloes. It might be argued that there is a case for NY as most people "wouldn't mind" going there - I don't know the answer but my interpretation is that most people would want London. Think about whether you would come to London - the next stage I think is seeing how many people are going to turn up.. Email me with your ideas - I'll post again next week with the best proposals. That could well be the 'The Bass Book', check out URLs http://www.mfi.com/mf-books/bass.html http://www.musicians-net.co.uk/mmmo/bt1.html ...for details and take note of the 'signature' bass on the book cover top right. Also, at the latter URL, check out who recommends "SCALES & MODES FOR BASS GUITAR". If you want to see hand crafted basses of exquisite beauty, check out: http://members.aol.com/sukopeg/photos.html These basses are works of art, just look at the grain and figuring in the wood, look at the jack sockets BTW, I thought the idea of a LevelFest in Iceland was a top one. It may not have anything to do with L42 but it's 'central' and different - isn't Iceland supposed to be a 'happening' place? I hear everything is way expensive there but it would be a blast. Nice to have you back Loz. I'm a new subscriber to the Level 42 Digest and I'm glad to have discovered an outlet for discussing the music of Level 42 and related topics. Here's some info about myself: Name: Brian Banks Age: 28 Marital Status: Married. I also own a Status (bass). My wife often wonders which one I'm really married to! My wife (Jackie) is also a Level 42 fan. Children: Daughter - Kayleigh Elizabeth Banks (5 months old) Residence: North Carolina, USA Occupation: Estimator/Planner for a commercial printer Been a L42 fan since: 1986 Interests: Music (of course!) I listen to many types of music - jazz, funk, fusion, R&B and pop. There are very few bands I've heard that combine all of these styles as seamlessly as Level 42 does. I suppose that's one of the reasons why I like them so much. Oh yeah...I play bass, too. One of my big influences is.... it should be obvious! I used to feel like I was the only Level 42 fan in existence - well, at least on this side of the Atlantic. Apparently there are a lot more out there than I thought! I make every opportunity to turn people on to L42. I'm sure many of you experience the same thing I do - "Level 42? Who's that?" I then proceed to hum a bit of "Something About You" and the response I usually I get is "Yeah, I remember that one! Cool song! Is that the only thing they did?" That's my cue to make a compilation tape for that person. Usually the response I get is very positive. It's a shame that L42 weren't promoted in the States like they were in Europe. If anyone out there remembers (or is a fan) of the Brothers Johnson, all of their albums were recently released on CD - finally! They really do know how to groove. Louis Johnson is also one of my favorite bass players - he's one of the first to do the "thumb thing" on the electric bass, along with Stanley Clarke and Larry Graham. There's no doubt in my mind that Louis Johnson was a heavy influence on Mark King. Give it a listen and you'll hear what I mean! I recommend "Blam!" and "Light Up the Night" - or you can just get the "Best Of" collection (I'm not sure what the exact title is). That's all for now. Looking forward to hearing from you! [I picked up a Brothers Johnson compilation CD on recommendation of people on this list, and now swear by it as being some of the funkiest stuff I've ever heard! Same goes for Larry Graham (thanks Nigel -- you're the 1000-megaton bomb =^) -Eric] ------------------------------ Subject: Vegas LevelFest!!!!
