I kind of noticed that too, but I attributed it to the different synth bass voice they used on World Machine. It's sort of a modulated-type thing, and doesn't completely seem to stick to pitch. As a bass player, I guarantee the song itself is in E, though. Can you imagine?!! -- -Will "I'll walk around in circles. All I know is BL can be categorized as East Coast. Why do I say > this? Because I bought a compilation CD that had EAST COAST RAP on it's > cover and it had one song from them. In reality, there's no such thing as "East Coast" and "West Coast" rap. It was a total media concoction. If there's two kinds of rap out there, it's either the commercial wack sh*t (i.e. Bone Thugs N Harmony) or the dope kind (i.e. A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots)... ...Buckshot LeFonque isn't really a rap group, but a musical project by Branford Marsalis that spans the entire African-American musical spectrum, from blues to jazz to hip-hop. In more Level-related news, I was hanging out at a bar my friend manages and he intriduced me to this dude who was also a musician...one conversation led to another and he told me that he knows Level 42!! Specifically Mark and Mike. He told me he met the band in the early 80s in New York City at a rehearsal studio called The Funhouse...He even told me of other stuff, like a "Micro Kid" remix that contains samples of Eddie Murphy's James Brown impression. Anyone know of this? He was also lucky to see L42 live in the US not once, not twice, but several times... He also told me that "Boon died." He was relieved to hear me clear up the confusion for him (i.e. Boon's *replacement* was the one who died...Boon released a solo album last year). I'm proud to say that I'm a BIG fan of The Bee Gees, and their new album is quite good. > It turns out the version of "Hot Water" from "WM" comes out in the key > of F, while the version from "True Colours" sounds closer to E, and > slightly slower. Someone help me out - was it just a bad dub job or an > overt decision by Polydor to sweeten the song? My guess is that it happened in the remix, to speed it up slightly. I happen to prefer the version of Hot Water on True Colours, because A) that drum lead that opens the song is supercool, and B) since it's in E, it was much easier to play my bass with the track! I noticed, too, the difference between HW (Hot Water) on TC (True Colours) and LB (Level Best). (Acronyms rule!) > The most glaring example of this is the difference in pitch between the > album and single versions of "Tracie" from "Staring At the Sun." Mark's > vox on the single are different, too. Why wouldn't they just edit it at > the same pitch. Personally, I like the single release of Tracie better than the album version. I'd say they sped it up to make it a bit more danceable, while compressing the length of the song for better airplay chances. Actually, someone once emailed me a hilarious joke based on the premise that "Bill Gates died and, much to everyone's surprise, went to heaven...." It's way too long to post here, but if anyone wants it, drop me a line and I'll mail it to you. It's pretty damn funny. ObL42Con: My father, for reasons still unexplained (grin), brought home a book on guitars today that happened to have some good pics of the Mark King signature Alembic and Jaydee basses. I'll get those scanned in and stick 'em on my Web page at some point, so I'll let you know when it's up....... -- Jenn (who has recovered from finals & a chaotic work week just in time for summer quarter :)
